So, starting a new campaign the theme is evil hunting/horror mystery. I'm playing a ranger using a repeating crossbow. The catch is our DM wants us to gestalt with an NPC class. Has to be an NPC class. The idea is our non-evil hunting selves have some sort of role in society. I think adept is the only class that brings something to my ranger.

Warrior just has full BaB which I have.
Expert: would give me more class skills, but no more skill points
Aristocrat: Will saves, and some class skills, but Adept does that and better.

Are there other NPC classes?

(Magewright from Eberon is out.)

I suppose I could see if the DM will let me do something else, but PC classes are out.

E6 campaign.
Other players are: Wizard, Warlock, and Archivist.
we have mercs as redshirts/meatsheilds

Thanks

Straight up Take commoner it wins, you qualify for the Survivor PRC from Savage species

Commoner required NPC PRC it OWNS and still follows NPC rule, also it fits with Rangers really well five levels net you Improved Evasion and Improved uncanny dodge and the big papa DR 5/- + other amazing goodies

for more commoner awesome check here http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232822

There used to be a gleaner NPC class by Rich Burlew somewhere on this site. Edit: found it, http://www.giantitp.com/articles/gk7uKJeF296jRcx1NJw.html

Adept is the best choice for power out of those in the DMG. Aristocrat might give you a better social weight to throw around when roleplaying; you presumably know your DM better than I do.

Also note Survivor Prc gives SR, various immunities, other special abilities, 6+ skill points, huge skill list, and all three good saves

Maybe try to convince your DM that all tier 5 and tier 6 classes should be fair game because the Adept is considered to be tier 4?

Survivor doesn't require Commoner. You can qualify through careful multiclassing, too. Commoner on its own just happens to qualify at first level. Survivor only requires "Highest base save bonus must be lower than character level." Gestalting Commoner with Ranger doesn't reduce the ranger's saves, and so doesn't qualify you for Survivor, and thus does absolutely nothing unless the Chicken-Infested flaw is desired.
