View Full Version : I need something like 4e's "power cards" in 3.5/PF

Basically, I have a new player, and unfortunately she's playing a Cleric (lots of options) so she's always indecisive over what to do and slowing down the game with her turns. Also she can never remember her bonuses and such.

What I think I need is something like 4e's power cards where I'd just print out like 5 cards for her, something like "Channel Energy", "Domain Power 1", "Domain Power 2", "Morningstar", and maybe the 2nd level spells she usually prepares. I'd put all the bonuses there in a nice concise fashion and hopefully that makes it easy for her to act on her turn. Does anyone know a tool or software for generating something like this? I don't quite have the design skills to do it from scratch.

Take a look at these free pdf templates from TOGC (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/28858/Blank-Cards-Collection?manufacturers_id=523&it=1). I've used the spell templates & magic item templates to similar effect in the past for my players.

Honestly, the actual spell cards (http://www.rpgnow.com/product/17733/Complete-Spell-Cards---Updated?term=complete+spellcards&it=1) are totally worth the money. The blanks are nice if you just have a few spells or want to add some non-SRD ones, but the pre-filled out ones for all the spells in the SRD are great. Plus the monster ones have sections of all the summon monster.summon nature's ally.

The other thing I love about the cards is purchasing it gives a group license (for up to 8 people) so everyone can use it.

+1 to spell cards. I'd try to squeeze the rest on her character sheet if you can. Weapons are obvious, but if you have room in the weapon section you might put channel energy and 2 domain powers there. That's 4, and maybe 2 more if she carries backup weapons.

Sit down with your new cleric and a stack of Index Cards - write the notes for each card *with* the new Cleric so that it makes sense to *them*. Go over some of the battle options, and make a few cards for that as well, like fighting defensively or going defensive while casting. Don't forget simple things like turning undead or rolling initiative.

When I did this with some new players, or with some one-shot games, what I did was put together a list of stat-adjustments down the side of the cards, so that a player could take their character index card, their weapon, their combat maneuver, and any modifiers for buff spells, lay them down overlapping, and see the entire row of pluses and minuses all conveniently laid out.

Index cards are GREAT.
