View Full Version : Target Practice

I was thinking of making a character who just stands and laughs at spells bounce off of him, by getting insane save bonus (Paladin of Slaughter 2 + Black Guard 2 + Hexblade 2 = 3x cha to saves), and having both mattle and evasion (Hexblade 3 + Rogue 2). This way, if a spell offers a save, the character just shrugs it off.

To make this work though, there are a few more things I need, and I'm not sure how many of them exist in the system. The things I'm mostly looking for are:

a) a way to force all spells to have saves. I remember reading a similar feat somewhere, just not sure where. For the record, the DM allows Sword and Sorcery books, so may have been one of those

b) a way to not fail saves on a natural one. There is steadfast determination for fort, but that leaves me with the ability to fail will and reflex saves on a bad day

c) a way to force spell casters to target me. Anything that draws spells towards me is a good thing in this case.

Does anyone know of any ways to make these happen?

Divine spells only, but Exemplars of Evil's Divine Denial feat does that.

b) a way to not fail saves on a natural one.
Pride Domain forces a reroll on a 1, which is close enough for most purposes. Or Imbue Healing: Luck, but that's less reliable.

I suppose another option for b would be the feat Dumb Luck, which lets you once per day as an immediate action treat a natural 1 on a save as a natural 20. It's... not a very good feat, especially given the requirements, but I figure it's nice to know extra options.

You can negate natural ones on a reflex save by gaining the withstand class feature. You always make a concentration check instead of a reflex save and you don't autofail skill checks on a one. Kensai grants it, and I'd swear I've seen it on at least one other PrC as well.

and you don't autofail skill checks on a one.

To clarify: the quoted text is not a benefit of the class feature in question, but is simply the usual rule for all skill checks, no matter who's making them.

The Steadfast Determination feat lets you not autofail Fort saves on a natural 1. (It also lets you use your constitution on will saves, although I don't think that's as important to you as a paladin; as there is a feat that lets you use charisma instead of wisdom on will saves. Force of Personality (I think))

Well, these should help. Now I just need something against no-save arcane spells, and spells only affect me 0.25% of the time. Or 0% for fort saves. (I was thinking of taking luck feats, but that seems like an inefficient waste of feats).

Sadly this would require me to revamp the character. The build focuses on buffing up saves: my concentration wouldn't be too high.

Though I suppose I could go Necropolitan + Marshal 1 + warblade to get double my cha to concentration, and make concentration checks in place of saves. Than I just need a way to get more swift actions (I'm thinking Ruby Knight Vindicator, but I would still need to spend class levels on evasion and mattle).
