Shugenja and scrolls of the forbidden element

The title says it all, reading the manual Complete Divine page 13



As the cost of specializing in one element, a shugenja is
prohibited from learning spells associated with a different
element. The prohibited element is dictated by the favored
element, as described below.


It seems the Shugenja cannot put the forbidden element spells in his spells known list, but since they are in the list he can use them via scrolls, wands et cetera.

Am I missing something? Or it is correct?

Unless the errata caught it, that seems to be the case.

As a DM I'd probably veto the idea since it seems to me that the prohibited element should function like the prohibited schools of a specialist wizard, but that'd be a houserule.

Maybe it is intended, after all a shugenja is weaker than a wizard or even a favored soul.

You'd have to ask whoever on the design team of either OA or complete divine created the class to be absolutely sure.

I made a gut ruling based in the flavor of the class, rather than any mechanical concerns.

Otherwise a player will just say:- nevermind, archivist then.

If I'm reading you right, that's unlikely. Choosing shugenja over archivist in the first place was a decision to play spontaneous over prepared, or a decision to play a character of a particular flavor. I'd think that sorcerer subbing in the wu-jen list would be a more likely choice than archivist if they felt that call weakened the shugenja too much.

Though all in all, I really don't think my players would have a problem with that call. Well, the players I had anyway. Circumstances put me between groups atm.
