The thing to remember about them is that there is no "them". They aren't people. They don't even have souls (at least, I think they don't.) Whatever they are, they scare the **** out of me.

The World is Maya.
Maya is Illusion.
Maya is Shadows?
But Who Casts Them?
And Why Do Some Want To Turn Off The Light?

THE RAKSHA

HD: d8
Skills Trained: 4+Int
Class Skills: A Raksha selects 8 skills of their choice; these skills become their class skills. They always have Autohypnosis and Bluff as class skills.

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: A Raksha is proficient in all light armors, and all simple weapons. They are also proficient with their natural weapons.

Skills Trained: A Raksha is not a mortal creature, to follow the stillness and stubbornness of an immutable mind.

When a Raksha first takes a level in this class, they must select both their class skills and their skills known; any skill they have as "Known" is treated as if it had a number of ranks in it equivalent to the Raksha placing a single skill point per level into that skill (4 skill points for their first level, if they happen to have taken their first level as their first HD.)

Once per day, as a Full-Round action, a Raksha may change one of their Known skills to any other skill that they had chosen as a class skill. Alternatively, they may trade one of their Known skills for an additional class skill, and vice versa. They may take this action even when they are using their Summoned Form class feature, even though they are not normally allowed to take actions.

Spellcasting: A Raksha does not cast spells in the same way that, say, a Wizard or Cleric does. Instead, they know a number of spells equal to the number given above, all of which must be spells from the Conjuration (Summoning) subschool of magic, drawn from the Cleric, Druid, and Wizard spell lists.

They may cast any spell they know, spontaneously and with no regard to spell level; they may cast any spell they know out of the spell slots listed on the table above. Raksha regain spent spell slots at a single time of day, chosen when they first take levels in this class, that has especial fictional resonance with them; whether this is at the stroke of midnight, at dawn's first light, or some other such time, they still regain their entire daily complement of spells.

Their caster level is equal to their Raksha levels plus 1/2 their levels in other classes; they may learn spells of any level that a Wizard of their caster level would be able to take. They may cast a number of additional spells per day equal to either their Charisma modifier or 1/2 their caster level (minimum 1), whichever is lower. A Raksha's spells are considered Divine spells for the purpose of prerequisites.

A Raksha may exchange a single spell they know for any other spell that they qualify for each time they gain a level. Finally, they use their Charisma to determine the spellcasting DCs and as their spellcasting ability.

Highest Level Spell Learnable
{table=head]Raksha Caster Level|Highest Level Spell Learnable
1-2|1st
3-4|2nd
5-6|3rd
7-8|4th
9-10|5th
11-12|6th
13-14|7th
15-16|8th
17+|9th[/table]

Vanished Lineage (Ex): A Raksha has lost some things. Most would consider them everything, but to them, they are no matter. All they lost was their metaphysical heritage.

At 1st level, a Raksha no longer counts as a member of their race for the purposes of prerequisites; they lose any racial feats that they might have, and are otherwise treated as if they were not a member of that race.

They do not lose any of their racial traits when they gain this class feature.

At 4th, 10th and 16th level, they may select the racial traits of a single additional race to "learn". As a swift action, or as part of changing their skills Known, they may exchange every single racial trait from one race they know with those of any other race they know. Their original race always counts as a race known for you.

A race is defined as any creature with no more than 1 racial hit die and an LA of +0.

This class feature may not be used to alter any form other than their "base" form.

Summoned Form (Ex): A Raksha does not bring others into this world; they sculpt their own story to match that of another.

A Raksha casts any Conjuration (Summoning) spell that they know as a Swift action; in addition, the range of the spell changes to [Personal], and the Raksha is limited to summoning a single creature. While the summoned creature exists, they are banished to a pocket demiplane from which they can give it orders and see through its senses (using your Spot/Search/Listen modifiers); they may not otherwise take any action except to dismiss the spell. Mind-affecting effects target the Raksha's mind instead of the summoned creature's, and True Seeing displays the Raksha's appearance superimposed over the creature's; finally, the Raksha takes half of any damage that the Summoned Form receives at any time.

If the summoned creature is slain or dismissed then the Raksha appears in its space; they are not subject to any negative conditions inflicted on the summoned creature (excepting mind-affecting effects, as indicated above). Likewise, the effect ends if they are somehow removed from the demiplane created. If the summoned creature enters an Antimagic Field then the Raksha appears in its position as if it had been dismissed, but the effect resumes when they leave the field.

The Raksha's banishment and subsequent recall count as you disappearing due to the ending of a summoning spell, and thus are not blocked by effects such as dimensional anchor and dimensional lock.

Spells cast in this manner are considered Transmutation spells for the purpose of class features; this class feature counts as changing the Raksha's form for the purpose of their other class features.

Any food and water consumed in this form sustain the Raksha as if they had consumed that much themselves, and any time spent sleeping by the form counts as sleeping for the Raksha. A Raksha still ages while in this extraplanar space.

This class feature only applies to spells gained through the Raksha spell progression.

This ability is a minor tweaking of an ability used in this Druid right here. (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=7694.0)

Shifting Visage (Su): A Raksha is not limited to just the limited number of forms that they may call upon; they can choose to take forms that are... beautiful.

A Raksha gains the Shifting and Razorclaw (http://pf-eberron.wikidot.com/races:shifter) racial traits, as indicated in the link, along with any alternative Racial traits that they wish from that list. However, they may stay Shifted indefinitely, as they are fundamentally changing their form, rather than just calling upon lycanthropic heritage.

At 4th level, 10th level, and every 5 levels thereafter, the Raksha gains the Improved Shifting (http://pf-eberron.wikidot.com/feats:improved-shifting) feat, even though they don't qualify for the feat.

A Raksha of at least 4th may, during the same action as changing a known skill, may exchange one of the Improved Shifting bonus feats they gained through this class feature for either the Improved Shifting feat (allowing them to change their options), or any racial feat that any of their learned races would qualify for, even if that feat is normally restricted to only being taken at 1st level. If the feat modifies a racial trait, the Raksha only benefits from the feat while they have that racial trait.

A Raksha using this class feature applies it's benefits and penalties to any creature summoned through their Summoning Form class feature.

Panoply of the Shifter (Su): Raksha do not have to stay limited to the mere claws and daggers of their chosen forms; as long as they have a model, they can change it.

A Raksha of at least 2nd level may designate a number of pieces of equipment that they have owned personally for at least a month as their Panoply. Any item that has been incorporated into a Raksha's Panoply becomes a part of their body, altering in a thematically appropriate manner whenever they change their form.

For example, a coil of rope might become a spinneret, a shield might become a part of their body that is especially well armored, Boots of Striding and Springing might become powerful leg muscles.

Other than this purely cosmetic change, and the fact that this allows the Raksha to use items in their Panoply regardless of their current form, nothing is altered about these items mechanically, and they are not allowed to use more items of a given type than they normally could.

However, whenever they take on a different form, they may choose to replace a single natural weapon that they would gain with any one weapon in their panoply, allowing them to use it as a primary natural weapon.

A Raksha may exchange a single piece of equipment in their panoply for any other item that qualifies whenever they change their skills Known.

Unique in Multiplicity(Su): A Raksha is not alone in their subtle changes; the Vestiges from beyond space and time are illusions that have slipped through the cracks...

A Raksha of at least 2nd level may select any Vestige of any level, and take on it's Sign and Influence, though they are not bound to the second part; as long as they act in accordance to the given Influence, they get the indicated benefit to their AC and all d20 rolls. However, should they break the Vestige's influence, they lose this bonus for 5 minutes, and instead take a penalty to all d20 rolls and their AC equal to that amount for the same duration.

They may not suppress the Vestige's Sign, and they treat any Compulsion effect to make them act contrary to the Vestige's Influence as if it were a suicidal order. Unlike anything else about the Raksha, this is a permanent part of their identity; nothing short of the power of a Wish spell can change which Influence they follow and Sign that they show. They benefit from this class feature, regardless of what form that they are in.

If the player (and by extension, the Raksha) rejects the stale stories of the Vestiges, they may decide their own Influence and Sign; they should talk with the DM to ensure that the Influence is at least as onerous and the Sign at least as noticeable as that of any other vestige.

Express Chosen Heritage (Ex): A Raksha is able to act more like a given race than members of that actual race, regardless of what form they are in.

A Raksha that is benefiting from the racial features of any of their learned races applies those benefits to any form that they are in, allowing them to gain, for example, a Human's bonus feat and skill points while in the form of an Elemental.

In addition, they may, at the time of changing their form, choose to either have their type be that of their

Mutation is Stability (Su): It is interesting how many... illusions... go away when you forget who you are.

A Raksha of at least 5th level is immune to all Diseases and Poisons; in addition, if they would be otherwise suffering the effects of a Disease or a Poison, and they change their form into a creature with an ability that would inflict poison or disease, they may chose to use the disease or poison that they are "suffering" from instead of the normal poison or disease.

At 9th level, a Raksha treats any instantaneous Transmutation as if it were an effect with Permanent duration instead. In addition, they may choose to dispel any Transmutation effect that they are under the effects of as a Free action that they may take regardless of whether or not they can take other actions (allowing them to, for example, be hit by Stone to Flesh, sleep for a few hours, and then remove the effect as part of a yawn.) They must make a level check to remove the effect, as if they had targeted themselves with a targeted Greater Dispel Magic with a caster level equal to their character level that only affects the Transmutation effects of their choice.

At 13th level, a Raksha may treat any negative energy effect (such as Negative Levels, Level Drain, Ability Damage, Ability Penalties, or Ability Drain) as if it's source was a Transmutation effect, allowing them to shuck them as a free action.

At 17th level, a Raksha may treat all effects with the Mind-Affecting descriptor as if they were Transmutation effects, and may remove them, regardless of whether or not they consciously want to; they are actually immune to Mind Affecting abilities, but they are quite willing to play along.

Assumed Nature (Ex): A Raksha is nothing if not whimsical; they might choose to spend a year as an owl, sitting on a tree, watching rabbits run by, and then choose to chase someone off as a swarm of bees.

A Raksha of at least 6th level may choose to make any spell that they cast through Summoned Form to have it's duration changed to Permanent(D); while in this form, they do not regain any daily spells until they either choose to dismiss this form or it dies, at which time, they may recover their spells in the normal manner.

Innocent Form (Ex): A Raksha is nothing if not discrete. Their definition of "discrete" does not match the normal definition at all.

A Raksha of at least 7th level gains the Deceivingly Innocent Form (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=526.0) feat as a bonus feat; they may order forms taken through Summoned Form to either take on or lose the effects of the feat, by ordering them to take a Full Round action to change their form. They're Deceivingly Innocent Form is modeled after whatever Learned race that the Raksha is using at that moment.

Legion Form (Ex): Raksha do not just take the form of a single creature; that would limit the stories they can tell, would it not?

A Raksha of at least 8th level may choose to forgo instantly changing into a creature when using Summoned Form; instead, as long as they cast another spell within the next round, they may change into both forms.

Their multiple bodies can take distinct actions in the same round, and may act at different initiative counts, and all get the benefits of all of a Raksha's class features that still affect them when in a different form, though all the bodies must share the Panoply between each-other.

Upon the death of a single body, the Raksha may choose to dismiss all of their remaining bodies and appear at the killed body; they are forced to do this if they only have one body remaining. Otherwise, their forms may move any distance from each-other, with the Raksha controlling them all concurrently.

At 12th level, and every 4 levels thereafter, the Raksha may control an additional body.

Evolution as One (Ex): A Raksha has cast singularity of form to the winds, letting them be almost anything that they want!

A Raksha of at least 11th level gains the [Shapeshifter] subtype, and may choose to have their different forms from Legion Form take on different racial traits and different Shifting Visage choices from each other, rather than having them be identical.

They may treat leaving Legion Form by dismissing every body as if it were a Full-Round action choosing their skills Known, even if they already performed that action that day; this may only be done once per day.

Shifting History (Su): A Raksha is not a creature anymore; they are a story, and their ability to retroactively alter canon in their story reflects this.

A Raksha of 15th level gains a perfect memory of their entire life; in addition to this, they may retroactively edit any of their memories, by making a Bluff check against a DC of 10+their character level+their Charisma modifier; they do not receive the bonus from Unique in Multiplicity unless they are changing a memory to be in line with the Influence that they follow. Their bonus to the check is modified as normal for how credible their "lie" is.

If the check is successful, the memory is altered in that manner for every single creature that shares that memory, affects any Divination effects that try to access that memory, and affects the memories of anyone who was told stories about the memory.

A creature trying to access the memory is allowed a Will Save against a DC of 10+1/2 the Raksha's class level+ their Charisma modifier to disbelieve the changes, but otherwise is not allowed to save again unless someone shows them actual evidence that their memories are at least partially falsified.

The Raksha never receives a save against this ability.

This is a supernatural Mind Affecting ability.

The World is a Whim (Ex): A Raksha is known everywhere, and can pretty much do what they wish, which can be pretty much anything.

A Raksha of at least 19th level ceases to age, and may once per day choose to retroactively have their actual physical body treated as if it were a form assumed through Summoned Form, thus giving them an effective "second" life, and a good story to tell the natives.

Storied Form Made Flesh (Su): The Raksha's little pocket of an extraplanar space increases in size, until it becomes the size of a town; the story inside does not have to be that small, however.

A 20th level Raksha is impossible to remove from their extraplanar hideaway while even a single body created through Summoned Form remains in existence; this grants them immunity to Anti-Magic fields (only for the purpose of remaining in a different form) and any other effect that would prevent a summoned creature from entering an area.

In additional, their extraplanar space (which is now a proper Demiplane, and can be traveled to using any planar traveling spells that a creature may have, though they may seal it off as if they were a DvR 1 DEity and the extraplanar space was their divine realm) increases to a cube five miles on each edge, where the Raksha cannot cast spells, but has access to the following abilities:

-They may design any type of town or city that they want that fits within the boundaries of the area; they may only place structures that would be able to stand without the aid of magic, and they must set aside some area to provide food and water for the town. They may not create any geography that does not appear on the Material plane, and the demiplane has the normal day-night cycle of their home plane.

-Every creature inside the demiplane is affected by the Raksha's Unique in Multiplicity class feature, as the very fabric of fate conforms to their will inside.

-The Raksha gains the Leadership feat, though they do not gain a cohort; their followers appear in the demiplane, and are the populace of the town. They do not gain more followers if an old follower dies, but any creature born inside the extraplanar space is treated as if it were a follower (this may exceed the normal limit on creatures commanded through Leadership.)

-All creatures gained through the Leadership feat are either normal members of one of the Raksha's Learned races, or the Raksha may choose to create a permanent "summoned creature" as a follower, using the level of the summoning spell to determine their effective level as a follower; a Wolf, for example, would be treated as a 1st level follower.

-Every one of the Raksha's followers gained through this class feature are permanently Charmed by the Raksha as an extraordinary effect; however, if the Charm effect would be ended due to the Raksha's behavior, it automatically ends for those followers.

-The Raksha is considered to be whatever law-maker they wish to be in the town; as long as they take one minute to fully elaborate on whatever law they wish to add to their demiplane, every one of the Raksha's followers automatically gain knowledge of that law, will consider it a valid and fair law, and, as long as it does not cause them to perform a suicidal action, they must make a Charisma check, as normal for when they are resisting a Charm effect, to disobey the law.

For example, the Raksha may decree that, within their town, no one is allowed to wear a shirt. As this is not a life-threatening law, every citizen in the town would go shirtless, and would actively prosecute any creature that broke this law.

-Until the Raksha is slain, no native creature or object may leave their demiplane.

-Any Divination spell or similar effect that attempts to discover information on the creatures or architecture within the demiplane return results that indicate that every creature is descended from the Raksha and that every structure is the Raksha in disguise.

Alright, this is a rewrite of my old Gestaltwandler class, drawing inspiration from both the Primordials and the Fair Folk from Exalted.

I hope you enjoy!

I take it this is a little much to take in? Seriously, folks, 200+ views and not a single comment?

This looks like a variation of the Pariah, actually. I like it. I've been planning out a shapeshifting class and this looks like it could provide some great inspiration.

Love. Mine. All of it. Have it.

Real review later.

It's neat, but I'll need some time to take it all in. Probably at least a couple more readthroughs. I think we can agree that it's not exactly simple.

Amechra
2012-10-25, 03:38 PM
Nope, it isn't simple; your transforming into Swarms at like 3rd level, and later on, you get to screw with people by holding morality plays!

Those angels and demons fighting? All you.

I'm glad people like this; I'm still looking around for better wording for some things, but I think it will generally hold up. Probably.

Alrighty, here comes my critique!

The spellcasting leaves me with mixed feelings honestly. Yes, they're limited by a wide margin in amount of magic casted compared to other spellcasters, but they still get the arguably strongest school of magic and a much more liberal bonus spell per day option. Once you can cast Summoner Monster IX, Gate, etc., do you really need other schools of magic?
Vanished Lineage is too vague and honestly just penalizes humans since they're one of the premiere races that get a feat as part of their racial features. But more importantly, you need to define the term "race" more specifically to prevent shenanigans.
Summoned Form is toeing the line of broken, personally. It's playing around with the action economy to make a powerful subset of spells even more so.
Well. Level 1 is pretty front loaded with a lot of goodies. This class is definitely an attractive dip.
Why does Unique in Multiplicity require them to mimic another Vestige instead of create something of their own?
The 9th level ability of Mutation is Stability just seems really abusable to me, but I'll need to research that further.
Assumed Nature is just flat broken. It makes Shapechange look like a cantrip and you get it at 6th level. Why do you need to regain your own spells when plenty of outsiders have their own nifty suite of SLAs?
Legion Form would be alright if not for Assumed Nature.
Shifting History should have the Su tag, not the Ex. tag. I'm also confused on what it does exactly.
The World is a Whim basically grants immortality, correct?
Rank 0 Deities don't have access to Salient Divine abilities. And how exactly does one get to the demi-plane?

Overall, I like the concept behind this class. It's interesting and something I haven't seen before and is the kind of thinking I'd like to see more of. But it seems to take the middleman completely out of Tier 1 and just crowns you as the epitome of the quadratic progression of magedom.

I'm actually not sure on how strong they would really be on level 1. They can use their summoned form for, 3+charisma modifier rounds per day, unless there's some level 1 summoning spell that lasts for more than a round. I'm not sure that's really worth much, considering how, well, weak level 1 summons are.

But what Wizard or Sorc wouldn't dip one level of this to get Swift Summoning spells and the best protection from combat available?

Oh, that's true. I didn't think of combat protection. Swift action to be invulnerable for a turn is quite nice.

Oh, that's true. I didn't think of combat protection. Swift action to be invulnerable for a turn is quite nice.

Summoned Form never actually limits itself to spellcasting the Raksha grants. It specifically says any Conjuration (Summoning) spell they know. So a Wizard 19/Raksha 1 could summon up an Elder Elemental for 19 rounds of invulnerability.

Eldan
2012-10-30, 07:26 PM
That needs a rewording. THe intention is pretty clear, I'd think.

What happens if you use Summoned Form under a spell that forbids planar travel?

Amechra
2012-10-30, 08:02 PM
If under an effect that prevents planar travel? It don't work. You're actually summoning up good ol' archetypes to take the form of.

Vanished Lineage: I really do need to specify the whole "+0 LA, no racial HD" thing, don't I? And racial feats are feats that require you to be a certain race to take them; Mr. Former Human would still get all their racial features. They just wouldn't be able to get into, say, Chameleon.

Summoned Form: Would making it so that damage to the creature also damaged you help? And I should put in a point in Assumed Nature that you are still the one getting experience when your summoned form kills things, not your summoned form?

Summoned Form honestly is replacing you with a creature that you summoned. You still need to direct them as you would a normal summoned creature, even though they are "an alternate form", which curbs the worst excesses that result from Legion Form.

Gate is a Conjuration(Calling) effect, and the stuff you summon through Summon Monster IX is CR 9. You are replacing yourself with a CR 9 creature.

I'll note that Summoned Form only affects your own spellcasting; I find it completely fair that a Wizard 19/Raksha 1 can use a 5th level spell to turn into something that gets ganked in short order, all the while losing their spells (and all their class features that don't get explicitly passed onto the summoned form) for the duration!

I'm thinking of dropping Raksha's Knowledge, and forcing them to have Bluff and Autohypnosis as skills, so that I can base Shifting History off that.

Unique in Multiplicity works like that because, well, they are generally well defined in behavior; I'll shift it around so that the default option is picking from Vestiges, and that designing your own legend as a "you can do this with your DM if you both want to go through the effort. Make sure the behavior isn't broad enough that you can succeed on it without trying!"

The World is a Whim gives you technical immortality; they could still just kill you again. And, I'm pretty much going to end up having any summoned forms they have hurt them as with a Shared Pain, Forced spell, with no save, so they are going to be pretty weak by then.

9th level Mutation is Stability... I made it a free action so that you could still use it when turned to stone; I might just make it a level check to dispel it, as if you were casting a targeted Dispel Magic on yourself.

Shifting History... well, I can see why it should be Su. Sigh, I'll change it. And what does it do? It's flavor, essentially; you are so good at shapeshifting that you can mutate memories of yourself.

A good example would be, say, changing a memory of you killing the king and wearing his buttocks as a hat with a memory of you finding the king already murdered. You are also changing that memory for yourself, so that you can't be found lying when you claim to be blameless, either.

The demiplane is where the Raksha goes when they use Summoned Form; it's essentially a place for them to play around with their personal stories (I might get rid of the Alter Reality aspect, and have it instead work like this:

-Every creature inside is affected by the Raksha's Unique in Multiplicity class feature. anyone who wasn't "created" inside gets a save against it.

-The Raksha gains Leadership while inside (no Cohort, though); the people created are the populace of the town, and are not replaced when killed, though they can create more people by the classic method. All creatures gained through Leadership have to be of the races that the Raksha has Learned, though they should get an allotment of creatures to "design" wildlife out of, so that the fields (see below) have something in them. Probably will base it off any 1st level spell that they can cast, really.

-The Raksha designs a town that's inside this demiplane, where he is considered mayor, and any law he makes is perfectly AOK (as long as it doesn't violate the Unique in Multiplicity behavior restrictions; he gets Charisma checks as if everyone was Charmed by the Raksha) There has to be some source of food and water for the town, or it fails to work. Oh, and everyone is indifferent towards the Raksha, no matter what.

-If he dies, the Demiplane merges with some predetermined spot in the material plane, releasing all the creatures inside so that killing the Raksha isn't tantamount to mass-murder.

-Until he's dead, nothing native to the demiplane can leave. You can still visit with spells that let you travel to planes, which would allow him to bring his Summoned Forms to the demiplane, so that he could have tea with himself, or something.

-Any divination spells that would reveal heritage to the caster shows anyone native to the town to be descended from the Raksha, and that the buildings themselves are the Raksha.)

Yes, there is. It's worded like that so that an X 8/Raksha 1 could grab SMIII.

So, wait, that does mean a Wizard 19/Raksha 1, could grab SM IX and spend 20 rounds invulnerable?

Nope. They would be able to grab SM V, and spend 10 rounds of (no longer) invulnerability.

I'll update the class Friday evening; I've got a lab I need to finish up for my CompSci class, after all.

As written, they have no maximum spell level known. Thus, a level 1 Raksha would be able to learn Summon Monster IX, Gate, and Summon Elemental Monolith, and then be done with it.

Yes they do have a max spell-level known; I just apparently didn't write it out very well.

After lab today, I've got an hour or two before I have stuff to do, so I will add... tables and stuff.

To clarify... stuff.
