I have a friend starting up and he wants to recreate the ghost rider character in the sense of protecting the innocent, dispensing out justice for those that have harmed them, and all the other goodies that come with being the hellfire bathed spirit of vengeance. We thought one of the easier ways to do this was either go arcane or rework a base class, we thought the grayguard fit the flavor well, but i would like to rework the paladin to create a more likeness of the character.
I'm also open to any suggestions to make this viable, all sourcebooks (including dragon mags) are available except tome of battle.

You might also consider Crusader from Tome of Battle with some minor tweaks, or a Cleric with domains like War and Fire.

Hellbred. That is all.

A Paladin/Warlock or (my first impulse) Paladin/Wilder could give you a solidly Ghost Rider-ish gish.

A cookie-cutter Sorcadin gish would work. The basic build is:
Paladin 2/Sorcerer 4/Spellsword 1/Abjurant Champion 5/Sacred Exorcist 8

If you customize the stock build with the Smiting Spell feat, Spell Storing Weapon, Combust as a spell known, the Metamagic Specialist Sorcerer ACF and some blasting feats (Searing Spell, Empower/Twin, Arcane Thesis), you should be able to whack things with your sword at the same time you tag them with big piles of no-save Fire damage.

I would like to inquire as to why Tome of Battle is unacceptable.

That said, Cleric of Nessek with the Fire and War domains as Edge of Dream suggested into Prestige Paladin (Unearthed Arcana) should come out to what you're looking for.

Yeahhhh, except that's the only sourcebook that i'm not allowed to use, so i can't lol.

We don't have the book, and many of the players don't really know about it, so it's too confusing for people who've never even heard of maneuvers. Stupid i know, but i've already argued for it a few times.

If you want to go dragonblood subtype, you could pick up the dragonfire assault feat from dragon magic. It makes your power attack damage energy damage.

I kind of like this idea. I may have to make a character like this someday, but without the ghost rider theme :P

Ghost Rider is a paladin? I thought he punished people for any sin they committed regardless of how bad it was even minor stuff. Doesn't sound to paladin-ish for me, unless they're a paladin like Miko was a paladin. How about this: instead of making a paladin based on Ghost Rider, make a paladin based on Nic Cage. It's almost similar to what you're planning except way better!:smallwink:

I'm actually liking this idea too. I'll have to look at it and see if he's cool playing a full caster, but i might actually use this for my own.

Which is why Gray guard was going to be the goal in that build.

If any Pathfinder materials are legal for you, I strongly recommend Inquisitor rather than Paladin.

Can print out the manuevers (they are all online free) as well as Wablade(online)

Definitely seconding From Smite to Song + DFI. Something like...

Silverbrow Human, Harmonious Knight (paladin substitution level found in Champions of Valor) Paladin 20

1- From Smite to Song, Extra Smiting
3- Power Attack
6- Dragonfire Inspiration
9- Song of the Heart
12- Divine Vigor
15- Battle Blessing
18- Sacred Vitality

Mix and match as you'd like - the only really essential feats are From Smite to Song, DFI, Song of the Heart and Extra Smiting.
