I have a build modeled after Shneekey's Takahashi but it doesn't begin being effective at scaring things until later in life. Any suggestions for scary builds which bloom earlier?

I'd rather stay away from casting for... certain reasons, but I'm open to suggestions. Also, I'd be interested in templates which give scary bonuses (so to speak) and even low-LA races.

Zhentarim Fighter (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20060327a) is a must.

Desert Half-Orc (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/environmentalRacialVariants.htm#desertHalfOrcs) is pretty good for a 1-level dip in Half-Orc Paragon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/racialParagonClasses.htm#halfOrcParagon) and for the Manacing Demeanor feat (Races of Destiny).

A dip in Marshal for Motivate Charisma wouldn't be bad.

The Intimidating Rage feat (Complete Warrior) + the Instantaneous Rage feat (Complete Warrior) can be a scary combo, no pun intended.

The Dreadful Wrath (Player's Guide to Faerun), Imperious Command (Drow of the Underdark) and Nymph's Kiss (Book of Exalted Deeds) feats are great for intimidation.

Last but not least, use the Never Outnumbered skill trick (Complete Scoundrel).

If you are aiming for levels 3-5, then Zhentarim fighter isn't that great. Barbarian with Intimidating Rage and possibly Immediate Rage is the better approach. Unfortunately, with level 5 as your cap, and no magic available, I can't think of any way to get people beyond Shaken.

(If level 6 is available, then Imperious Command is on the table, which makes them cower. And you would be building towards that anyway, so go for it!)

There is a regional feat called Dreadful Wrath that activates when you, charge, make a full attack or cast a spell. It dishes out a 1 minute shaken effect. Shame that it only effects a person once every 24 hours. DC: (10 + 1/2HD + Cha).

Imperious Command is on the table.

Desert Half-Orc Barbarian1/Half-OrcParagon2/HumanParagon2

Feats:
1:Intimidating Rage
3:Instantaneous Rage
5(Bonus):Imperious Command

If flaws are on the table then take Extra Rage and Dreadful Wrath.
