Winged mounts for desert empire [PF]

I need some flying mounts for the guys that defend the borders of an empire in a desert. Any thoughts? I'm trying to avoid good-aligned creatures.

Lets say Avvors, Avvorii for plural.

Not stronger then a horse and flyes, not too overpowered.

Pathfinder has the Sable Company Marine (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/ranger/archetypes/paizo---ranger-archetypes/sable-company-marine), a Ranger Archetype which comes with a Hippogriff as it's animal companion.

I'm looking mostly for fluff, actually. If there is already a flying desert creature, I don't have to invent everything, I'll just use what they got. I'll just run with hipogriffs since the session starts in about an hour anyway. :smallsmile:

Edit: At night, owls work. Some kind of giant winged lizard works.

Edit: Giant wasps. Especially the kind that implant eggs in you. How's that for not Good?

What level creatures are you looking for?

Rocs, giant vultures, and sphinxes are all pre-existing desert dwelling creatures with wings.

Wyverns have the vulture-feel to them; they could work. Or, of course, Dire Vultures.

Could just keep it simple and use Flying Carpets.

If you're set on using creatures though, Dire Bat or Wyvern is probably your best bet.

There's the Dire Vulture, Sand Dragon, Sphinx variants and Thunderbird from Sandstorm. Granted, not all are made for riding, but I'm sure you could make them work. If you want something more traditional, flying carpets are my number one choice for desert travel. Sadly not mounts though.

Apply winged to a giant sand wurm. Fly speed + burrow speed = win! Plus, isn't there a PrC based around riding a giant sand wurm? Now with more diving charges!

Crocosphinx's

Flying crocodile sphinxes can't be beat although I don't have my books handy and I don't think they can technically fly but that's easy to house rule that they have wings.
