Has anyone ever tried setting up a roleplaying server in a non-RPG multiplayer game, such as Team Fortress 2 or War of the Roses? If anyone is interested, I would like to set up such a game, where the players all interact in-character, and everyone plays to tell a story, rather than win.

Think you messed up the title there a bit.

Aren't most FPSs pretty close to this rather by default? I mean your role is Mr. Soldier Man: Shooter of Foreign Mr. Soldier Men, which is pretty much what you do. The respawning is slightly problematic, but there's more than a few games where you only get one life per map.

(Or you form a clan, play ArmA II, and organize yourself like a USMC platoon, which is what separates those who take their games a bit disconcertingly seriously from those who do not.)

I don't think that's going to catch on until you start making more arcade-style, FPS-like RPGs. You know, like Kingdoms of Amalur, only multiplayer, and good.
