I think you're looking for the Efreeti (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/genie.htm).

Your friend may be thinking of the fire genasi, from the Forgotten Realms. A form of planetouched creature, like aasimar and tieflings (just with fire, instead of celestials/infernals).

Pathfinder has a LA+0 racesplosion and featsplosion compared to 3.5. Pathfinder ifrits are essentially exactly similar to fire genasi, similar to fire-souled humans, and slightly similar to janni. He could be thinking of any of those.

Ifrit. (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/outsiders/ifrit) I don't think there's more than that.

Hellbred share a little of the aesthetic as well.

SRD has janni (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/genie.htm#janni) (MM I?) and efreeti bloodline (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/bloodlines.htm#genieEfreeti) (UA). The others I'm not sure about.

Fire genasi stats and description are in Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, and additional information is in Races of Faerun.

Hellbred are in fiendish codex 2. Very nice for a character with a fiendish appearance and a heart of gold. Default fluff has them a bit emo though. To be fair, you'd probably be a bit emo too if you had a near-guarantee of an eternity of torment upon your death to look foward to.
