View Full Version : What exactly does a Psicrystal look like?

I keep envisioning just a floating crystal but that seems pretty boring. I'm looking for something to represent a mini for one.

Are there any pictures of artwork in the books I am just not seeing??

Here are (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/xph_gallery/33173.jpg) a few (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/xph_gallery/33175.jpg) good pictures (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/xph_gallery/44249.jpg) for you. (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/xph_gallery/80502.jpg)

I often just have my psicrystal be a little person made of crystal, sitting on my head or something.

Kalashtar tend to have weirder psicrystals than others (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/roe_gallery/88243.jpg).

As long as it's diminutive and made of crystal, it can look however you want. The appearance is pure fluff and has zero anatomic needs to conform to.

I like a crafted piece, myself. A carefully cut piece that looks almost like a piece of jewelry. I even tend to have it loosely set in an actual piece of jewelry.

It confuses the heck out of people when the big "gem" in your ring sprouts little ectoplasmic spider legs and starts walking around on its own or is holding a conversation with someone.

Agree with Kelb. I've actually had it as a plot point that the grab-hapy Rogue sleight-of-hand'ed a Psicrystal off of a disguised Illithid savant in a port town (which they knew was being controlled by Illithids, but they did not know how or who was a pawn). He was just randomly pick-pocketing shiny things, and I had that be the hook that led to an encounter :3

Oh, he teleported away with a UMD and a scroll. The REST of the party, however...

Well, at least the monk got away to rez 'em.

I'm into the psionics fluff as much as the David Cronenberg-style flesh-warping goes, but the weird take on psionics' crystal fetish always seemed gimmicky to me.

So in that regard, I usually stick my Psions in pointy hats and describe their psicrystals as the archetypal magician's crystal ball. Not that it's any more interesting than the default. :smalltongue:

And now I know what my next psicrystal will look like.

I've had this idea for a shaper psion which I haven't actually gotten to play in a campaign. As a sculptor, his psicrystal would be a small statuette of a dragon which can be animated to gain its movement modes (statistically identical to a psicrystal, just more interesting).

Hyperconscious has a similar concept - Psistaves, in which you can set your psicrystal for additional benefits. An opponent/teammate may not even realize the gem in your staff is your psicrystal at first.

When I'm not doing geometric, I like insectoid shapes for mine - spiders, dragonflies, crickets etc. But I had a similar "sculptor psion" concept as well. (Mine was a Psiforged Erudite Crystal Master.)

IIRC the second one is an astral construct, not a psycrystal.

It's the massive blue crystal on her chest (there's no way that's comfortable. Same goes for the hideous neck-bra made of old belts.. you could probably choke her out with that thing).

What, you mean some peoples' eyes don't immediately go for cleavage? :smalltongue:

Why would you think that was a psicrystal? It seems like your bog-standard fantasy necklace/amulet/torc to me.

That's brilliant. Why didn't I think of that?:smalleek:

Because it's roughly the same size/shiny-ness as the other psicrystals depicted in the other pictures, and the other psions tend to have psicrystals displayed. Also because the poster was posting pictures to demonstrate the appearance of a psicrystal, which makes it unlikely that s/he would post one lacking a psicrystal (or that s/he would really think that ghost thing was a psicrystal).

Actually, her picture was in the psicrystal section of the XPH, so I just figured either the necklace or the floaty thing was one. :smalltongue:

But psicrystals are not typically worn as jewelry, nor do they provide any benefits for being donned that way. It's illogical to assume one would be in a necklace or amulet. Furthermore, not all psions even have psicrystals - you don't get it for free like a wizard does his familiar.

My psions tend to have their psicrystal as the crystal of their staff. Then it can fly away or crawl off to do stuff when i Need it to.
