I just realized that when Eugene tried to lecture the diva in 487 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0487.html) on whether Roy could go to Heaven, and she very angrily informed him that he had no authority to be involved in the decision-making process, she was probably specifically remembering the time he impersonated a being of pure Law and Good, by hijacking a summoning, in order to tamper with a trial. Just noticed panel 6 in 509, where therkla kills the valedictorian ninja.

Oh, and in the first panel here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0517.html), the Wight In Thanh's Shoes has a little smile on his face, probably from getting his shoes.

Reviewing recent strips for the express purpose of coming up with something to post here (and demonstrate how easy it is to find such things in an extremely detailed work like this), I have noticed that in 858 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0858.html) Tarquin alludes to having personal experience with Sabine's most useful skillset (and no points for guessing what that is).

Aside from the obvoius gag, this indicates several things previously only vaguely implied regarding the situation of Tarquin's group prior to the Empire of Blood's most recent revolution: chiefly, that Sabine was involved with the situation prior to the events depicted in the flashback panel of 725 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0725.html). Prior to this, I would have thought it believable that Sabine had (for instance) been sent by the IFCC or perhaps some other Tanar'ri figure with the authority to dispatch a Succubus on a long-term mission specifically to interfere with the machinations of the western continent's shadow rulers.

So THAT'S how she met Nale!

Who looks exactly like his brother and their father. Whoa. Somebody mentioned that Elan was probably able to distract Sabine so easily by kissing her because he looked exactly like Nale, so was Sabine attracted to Nale because he looked like a younger (and more importantly, less subtle) version of his father?

Ooooh, remember in #46 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0046.html) when she was surprised that Nale was trying subtlety?

You're good.

I didn't "just" notice this, but I missed it on my first read, and only saw it on subsequent reads, probably because there was so much time between the two strips.

In 758, when Tarquin is describing how he and his cohort rule through puppets, the King of Tears is shown being told that he needs a new port city.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0758.html

Guess what? Exactly 60 strips earlier, when we get to see the map of the western continent, the Free City of Doom (which the Weepies are besieging) is located next to an ocean harbor.

In the second panel of this strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0517.html), you can see that the box next to the one Haley is hiding in is labeled "Gouda: Product of Cliffport".

That second part is especially weird because Cliffport doesn't open trade routes with Gobbotopia until here:(http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0702.html), almost 200 strips later. How did that get there?

And it's also really cute how in comic 200 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0200.html) you can see Elan trying to play bardsong with his kazoo. How totally Elan.

I'm presuming it's a product of the old trade route between Azure City and Cliffport. The box isn't necessarily filled with anything, so it could be this years-old box left around with the other boxes. Cliffport sends Azure City a box, Azure City takes the cheese and eats it, Azure City leaves the box around, Cliffport cuts off ties when goblins take over Azure City.

However, gouda is a specific fondness of goblins, is it not? Dunno. Which reminds me, those slaves the Resistance liberated in their introduction were carrying food, was that from a raid, or salvage, or what?

I just noticed that in #759, the giany, flaming "Elan" is spelled with burning escaped slaves. Immediately after Haley and V help some slaves escape, but Haley and V only helped 23 escape, but ELAN had 30 little burning dot. I'm not surprised Tarquin would round up 7 more slaves from somewhere else, but it was interesting.

Gobbotopia's territory includes some excellent farmland. Enough time had passed that the farms could be beginning to start up again.

I suspect it's more that Haley's Self-Loathing looks like Haley as a teenager, a design that originated well before any of the other personalities appeared (and did so back when the Giant was more prone to straight recolors, to boot).

It's needlessly complicated because a fighter/rogue/sorcerer gives essentially the same abilities as a pure bard. It's also a neat tie in to how Nale enjoys his pointlessly overly complex plans.

H-uh. That explains some things. I'm not as well-versed in D&D as some here, so I never made the connection.

Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't post a little revelation made in the Goblins thread:

... I just figured out why the MitD fails all of his Spot checks. The way the 3.x lighting rules are written, it's the light conditions on the observer that matter, not the light conditions on the observed (yes, this is bass-ackwards; yes, it's the rules). The Monster is in the Darkness, and therefore, by the rules, blind, even if everything around him is lit.

Obviously the monster can see, but still. Adds a new layer to the jokes, which I found neat.

I don't know if this really counts, but until a few minutes ago I never really considered the link between the dragons and the Draketooth clan being that they were presumably sorcerers. The common explanation for sorcerers is having dragonblood once be a part of their family line. Might have just been my own mis-sight but I found it interesting.

I just realized that in #811, Nale doesn't seem overly perturbed by the presence of Malack, and seems to casually ask Malack how the family is. Earlier there was the misunderstanding regarding who killed Tarquin's previous wife. Maybe the same thing is going on with Malack's kids. Also, Malack is a high level Cleric of a God of Death, he may have survived in a weakened state the exact same thing that killed his kids.

not a bad idea, but judging from sabine's reaction, she is aware that malack +nale = harm. literally, as it would turn out.

I read that as Nale just not being able to avoid using a villainous taunt even when its really, really not a good idea.

Start of Darkness spoiler (totally unimportant, so you might as well look if you're curious):
When Eugene begins retelling the story of his youth, he mentions that he was always top of his class, except that one year when Suzy Finkelstein... {presumably beat him}. Apparently, that rivalry didn't quite end there...

...because in the very first panel of #669 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0669.html), Roy reveals that he lost his (well, first) virginity to SHEILA Finkelstein, whose mom was nominated for Wizzie Award along with Eugene.

Like Belkar once said, :belkar: "So... many... questions..." Did Roy hook up with her to spite his dad? Or maybe Sheila had a similar sort of relationship with her mom, and they bonded over that?

I just love it when an off-hand remark reveals a bigger picture if you look hard enough. This revelation made my day.:smallwink:

In the next comic, #732 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0732.html), the men guarding the gate are soldiers, while the one who talks to Durkon is a policeman.

In this same comic, Durkon says he will be in the Empire of Blood for 30 strips - and that's running long. Malak seems to be clutching his Amulet as he casts Harm. Maybe to give it extra damage. Or maybe the amulet helps his disguise, allows him to use Vampire-related abilities without changing his eyes or speech balloons.

Though he's not cluthing the amulet in 870, so maybe the first one's right.

Speaking of "Xykon", I never noticed that the orange-pendanted one Redcloak is talking to in that comic is the Eye of Fear and Flame (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0431.html). In the last strip note the roache's comments aboutt the acid breathing shark. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0541.html) This is a joke about a book called "Dungeonscape", that Rich Burlew wrote. In this book you can find an acid breathing shark :smallwink:

This is kind of obvious, but I guess that some peoples didn't notice. In This strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0542.html) you can see O-Chul strikes in the shark mouth and breaking some of his teethes. In the later panels you can see that the shark attacks with a red line in his mouth, and those are his gums.

This is obvious too, yet in this strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0562.html) We can see Kubota reading some books. These are 4 edition books, including the player's handbook and the monster manual in the box (he is reading the dungeon's master guide).

Well, the toy Dragon is clearly a less detailed version of the real black dragon. Exactly how toys in the real world are. It's actually pretty impressive, the level of detail that went into that (even though, ya know, less detail went into the toy dragon. Still).

Also, martianmister, it's a dragon, and it's black. I'm also curious in how you think it doesn't look like a black dragon.

And here's where I pull the colorblind card! I have issues with anything close together on the spectrum (dark reds and browns, for instance, or light greens and yellows). Looks like a darkish grey to me, which equates to black for a plushie. If it is green, my mistake.

If you look carefully at the scrabble board in strip 31, (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0031.html) you'll see that the word on the triple word score is not long enough to be "zyqxuwy." Also, you can't spell a seven letter word in scrabble, using only one tile already on the board, and have two tiles left, as the Illithid does (but if he did make that six-letter word that is on the triple word score, he could).

I don't get it.

I don't get it.

Malack's robe goes all the way to the ground, concealing the fact that he doesn't have feet.

Oh. Well... was that a thing to be foreshadowed? I don't know that it was ever a secret that he was a different kind of reptile thing. Like, I think the characters probably knew, even if the average reader assumed otherwise. It just wasn't a big thing.

Durkon clearly didn't know and maybe with the exceptions of Haley and Elan i think everyone would have said something if they'd noticed.

We're not talking about him being a vampire, here, right? I thought it was just that he was a specific kind of lizardfolk that moves around on his body/tail thing rather than on legs.

Unless being a vampire does that to you. I don't really know all that much about lizardfolk and vampires.

Halfblood yuan-ti do have at least the possibility of ending up with a tail and no legs, and a snaky head.

Alternatively, he might be a lizardfolk based on one of those lizards that only have forelegs.

@Linker: No where taking about the fact that he's legless. Nobody knew that prior to him pulling that trick out on Durkon in their fight.

That's what I was talking about, yeah. I don't know. I didn't personally see it as some big surprise. Rather, I sort of thought "Oh yeah I guess I should have seen that," what with panels like panel 3 here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0869.html). I feel like the characters would have noticed either way, being in an infinitely better position to distinguish between a guy walking on legs and a guy sliding along on a tail. It's probably pretty plain if you're standing in front of him yourself. Durkon was surprised when he got wrapped up, sure, but that's not totally indicative that he didn't know about the lack of legs -- Malack was trying to move fast and catch him off-guard with a unique technique. It's going to be surprising. :smalltongue:

I guess it's possible either way. A perspective I hadn't considered.

In solidarity with the linear guild evil opposites concept.

Z doesn't recognize the significance of the wall painting. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0856.html) as opposed to V instantly understanding the significance of the wall painting. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0843.html)

Z manages to find the trap while walking calmly, and Sabine laments not finding the trap. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0857.html) as opposed to V falling in the trap while running wildly (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0843.html) and Haley managing to find the trap easily. People keep forgetting that Nale (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0806.html, pnl 8-9) and Elan (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0881.html, pnl 7) are spellcasters.

I never noticed that in #881, in the second panel Elan is shedding a tear. The good guys can't lose, that's not how the story goes!

On rereading Roy's battle in the arena, in the second-to-last-panel, there's a guard holding an axe as they wheel out the champion. I just now noticed how bloodstained that axe blade is.

The wizard that teleported (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0340.html) the order to Cliffport had to been at least level 18 to take 6 people along with him(1 medium creature or smaller per 3 levels) (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Teleport).

While this is true, it also seems to be a rule Rich ignores for story purposes. If you like, imagine that the wizard has a PrC that increases your teleport weight limit.
