So I've recently found the Genesis and SNES my grandmother bought oh so long ago for my dad, and she has a big box of just Genesis and SNES games.
Now, I know I'm going to be sitting around for the whole of my weekend playing these games with my brother, but I'll probably not get through all of them.
So I wanna know, what were your guy's favorite Genesis and SNES games?
That way I'll know what one's to play first, and it's just fun to remember the old games.

First of all, this probably ought to be in the Gaming subforum :smallwink:

Secondly and more importantly: Yoshi's Island, all three Donkey Kong Countries, Lufia II (though I gather the rest are pretty good too), Super Mario Kart, and Bubsy.

Everything Megaman, for SNES. Good times.

Earthbound is the only SNES game I've ever really played a significant portion of, and it's really fun if you like the type of game. If you don't already have a copy, though, you're not gonna get one without shelling out a pretty penny.

I second this list. And one of my own. Super Mario RPG.

Chrono Trigger for the SNES

The Sonic games for MegaDrive are pretty good.

Super Street Fighter II

That game was all the rage when I was 9 and the game we were all obsessed about. Since I also didn't have a SNES myself, that's what we mostly played at friends places.
Illusion of Time was also neat, we played that when staying at a friends house for a weekend.

Oh, and F-Zero. That game set the standard for racing games and I still play pretty much only racing games in which the cars have no wheels.

I don't know why but there's something I find really creepy about Yoshis. They eat everything and everything they consume gets turned into a yoshi egg. They can breathe fire (red versions), fly (blue versions) and cause small localised earthquakes (yellow versions). Bowser is small fry compared to monsters like these. oO

I grew up with genesis. Sonic 2 and 3 are considered some of the best platformers out there. For run and gun, Gunstar Heroes and Contra Hard Corps are some of the best shooters ever created.

I had a Genesis myself.

I'll agree that Sonic 2, 3, and 3+ Knuckles were among the best of the best. Shining Force 1 and 2 are also absolutely amazing games. Phantasy Star 4 is a gem too. Kid Chameleon was bizarre, and insanely difficult yet still fun somehow.

Super Mario Bros. All-Stars. I practically grew up on that game.

And also... *points to username* Ain't it obvious?:smallamused: One of my brothers blew my naive child mind before we got the game when he said that Bowser was a good guy in the game.

Other gems were Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, Mega Man X, and Goof Troops.

On the other team, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles.

Super Metroid. Gotta have Super Metroid.

Also, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is one game. They're the Genesis/MegaDrive OTP.

SNES:
Final Fantasy VI (Probably listed as III on the cartridge)
Chrono Trigger
Super Metroid

Genesis:
Sonic I/II/III
Shinobi III
General Chaos (I remember LOVING that game as a kid)

Illusion of Time was also neat, we played that when staying at a friends house for a weekend.

There are some great suggestions here, but I have to second this one because it's a great game. Just all around well made, fun, good music, and a pretty good story. It appeals to the action/adventure and RPG crowd. Keep in mind depending on your region it could also be known as the Illusion of Gaia or Illusion of Time. I have played it many time and after getting rid of my old school games years ago, Illusion of Gaia was one of the first I bought when I started buying up old games a few years back.

And now I want to find my cart and fire up the ol' SNES.

Secret of Mana, Super Mario Kart and Turtles in Time were my favourite coop games back in the days.

For solo play, nothing beat a good round of Prehistoric Man while everyone else was playing Donkey Kong. Not that Donkey Kong is bad, it just does not feature a screaming caveman with beerbelly:smallbiggrin:

These are all on SNES ofcourse. Everyone knew that the Sega stinks:smalltongue:

PS If you haven't played it already on some other system, go play Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past. Best. Game. Ever.

For the SNES, in no particular order.

Mega Man X 1-3
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario Kart
F-Zero
Harvest Moon
Legend of Zelda, a Link to the Past
Secret of Evermore (totally underrated game here)

Comix Zone, Zombies Ate My Neighbours, both for the genesis, I think.
Also, Ristar.

Rock'n'roll racing was excellent on both systems, though the SNES version was slightly better (as was often the case).

Never owned Genesis. Short list of my favorite SNES games, something remotely resembling an order:

Chrono Trigger
Super Mario World (Allstars too if you haven't played the NES ones, of course)
Final Fantasy VI/III (curiously, the western localization is fairly good too, unlike with Final Fantasy 4 for which you need the Japanese version or a remake to really experience its potential)
Super Mario RPG
A Link to the Past
Street Fighter II: The New Challengers (alas, Super Turbo was never released on consoles; original SFII is the groundbreaking game, of course, but the vastly expanded number of playable characters makes New Challengers more interesting, and few new moves and changed priorities really improve the balance so given the choice I'd rather introduce myself to The New Challengers than World Warrior now; anyways, make sure to play SOME Street Fighter II, those games are made of awesome and have good versus multiplayer)
Super Metroid
Secret of Mana
Axelay
Lufia II
Megaman X
Secret of Mana
Turtles in Time
Super Castlevania 4
NHL '94

I can't see Genesis and not recommend Shining in the Darkness (if you have it). It's the precursor to the Shining Force series and a great dungeoncrawler.

Gotta go with Donkey Kong Country 2 for the SNES. Easily one of the best platformers ever for that system. Not as knowledgeable about the Sega, but Gunstar Heroes and Sonic & Knuckles were amazing games.

And don't forget Earthworm Jim for both systems.

If you like shooters, I recommend Gunstar Heroes and Contra Hard Corps for genesis, as well as Super Contra for SNES.

The Mario games are classics as well, which for SNES would be World, All-Stars and Yoshi's Island.

On the RPG front, Genesis has the brilliant Shining Force series, while SNES has a host of offerings - Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore etc.

I just spent the day playing Yoshi's Island. :smalltongue:
That game is just...amazing.
Shining in the Darkness was pretty amazing too, in the bit of time I played it.

Thanks for all of the wonderful recommendations. My grandmother had a lot of the games mentioned, though sadly enough there wasn't any Phantasy Star...

I'll pick just three games for the SNES:

-Super Mario Kart (especially multiplayer)
-Super Mario RPG
-Earthbound (I love FF6 to death, but I'll give the edge to the system exclusive one for this)

I agree with a previous poster, Genesis stunk. :P

28 posts and no mention of Terranigma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terranigma)? Shame on you, people!

Other than that, pretty much all my faves have been mentioned.

Terranigma really needs to be played.

I'd recommend Treasure of the Rudras but it's only available in Japanese (fan translations aside).

Edit: Hold on a second, no Kirby? Really?

Hmmm, I remember a strategy game on the Megadrive/Genesis and I'm trying to recall the name of it. You were a robot that could transform into a plane and you had to make your way across a map capturing buildings by dropping guys near them. You could build various units and ferried them around in plane mode.

Herzog Zwei (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/HerzogZwei?from=Main.HerzogZwei). Often considered the first true RTS. I loved it back when I was a kid.

I'll second recommendations for the Shining Force I and II and Phantasy Star 4 – they're all amazing RPGs. For shooters, Gunstar Heroes and Ranger X were also very good.

Secret of Mana

Don't forget Secret of Mana! Despite the game bugs it was very enjoyable.

My fav SNES games:
Secret of Mana (Duh)
Final Fantasy VI (III on the USA cart)
Super Bomberman (The best party game EVER)
King of Dragons (Simple side-scrolling fighting fun)
Mario Paint (Strangely fun to waste time on this)
Mario Kart (I taught my dad how to play this... he promptly schooled me soon after)

I didn't own a Genesis, but...
Sonic 3 (Having 3 different characters helped replay value a bit)
Ghostbusters (Bobblehead ghostbusters, but it was a decent game)

Definitely the entire Streets of Rage (Bare Knuckle in Japan) series. It is still hands down one of the best beat-em'-ups that I have played.
