Lady Serpentine

A black-haired mage, dressed in robes of grey, sat in the air above an intricate design of glowing lines, some a bright, clear, white, others a malevolent-seeming purple, with a few of verdant emerald.

For now, he remains silent, simply watching the soon-to-be-battlefield.

(Actually, rolls just don't work in the opening post of a thread for some reason. That's caught me up a thousand times.)

A sweeping wave of mist rolls in, far faster than it naturally should. Tiny silhouettes flit through it, almost as if they're using it as a distraction...

Nothing happens yet, though, almost as if it is waiting for the first move.

The mage grinned, the veins of white light in the pattern beneath him flaring as he tapped into one of his power sources, though save for cutting through a tendril of mist that had strayed into it, there was little effect save that.

(Sorry, I made a derp there. I'd meant to say "waiting for the other Planeswalker to make the first move." That's my fault; Just pretend I took the first turn and put down a Sunken Ruins.)

The shifting watery ruins seem to fade entirely as a larger, more complex system builds over it, channeling the mist freely. It almost seems as if the silhouettes are hiding, waiting to attack in force...

(Play Dimir Aqueduct, bouncing Sunken Ruins back to hand. End turn.)

The white lines intensified once more, mirroring themselves in the air in front of the grey-robed Planeswalker, before resolving into a portal onto a field of razorgrass, through which stepped an angular golden Myr, gleaming in a sudden ray of sunlight.

More ruins appear off to one side, but they don't appear to be doing anything. More notable is a large body of flowering plants, seemingly fed by blood from an unseen source...

The golden Myr suddenly blazed with light, rays reaching out from the pattern to meld into its corona as it did, though the light quickly focused into an orb, its surface roiling with strange colors, from which sprang another Myr, this one a dull grey, with prismatic bands shifting over it as it moved, as though there was an oil slick covering it.

The field of flowers expands, and a small grunt of pain can be heard from somewhere within the cloud. However, a small, fluttering, vicious-looking Fey Creature erupts from the depths of the field, wielding a blade and looking ready to kill something.

((Well, that was an interesting coincidence...

Also, I've got to go now. I'll be back in a couple of hours.))

[roll0]

The prismatic Myr reached out a clawed hand, forefinger extended, and slashed downwards, tearing a rent in the air before it, from which stepped a pale woman with a strange harness on her back, and a cup of blood in one hand, with which she traced a rune onto each of the machines.

As soon as she was done, the golden Myr dashed across the battlefield, swinging a razored arm at the Fey as it went.

Meanwhile, one of the bands of green below the Planeswalker flared to life...

((Play Forest. Tap both Plains and the Alloy Myr to summon Servant of Nefarox. Attack with Gold Myr. Servant of Nefarox has "Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, that creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.", so Gold Myr becomes a 2/2 creature until the end of my turn.))

The mage grimaces as the blade sinks into him, though the chaotic maelstrom of energy seething beneath him absorbs enough of the force to prevent it from being a lethal blow.

The Alloy Myr reaches out again, opening another rent, through which a man who could be the woman's twin walks, marking each of his fellow combatants, and receiving her mark in turn.

The ceremony done, the woman laughs, and sets down her cup, summoning a pair of translucent blades from the air, and dances nimbly towards the fog bank.

(This didn't really belong with my turn, and happens during your upkeep.)

As the planeswalker begins his renewed efforts to destroy the unknown opponent, something strange happened: His mana reserves simply disappeared, along with the faerie that had just struck, as a new champion Faerie took to the field.

(During your upkeep, just after you untap but before you actually can do anything, Flash cast Mistbind Clique, exiling the tapped Faerie Token. Mistbind Clique's effect taps your lands prior to your main phase.

Presumably, this changes some things.)

(Indeed it does. In that case, the Servant of Neferox still attacks, but as a 4/2 creature, and, of course, the other one doesn't get summoned.)

BladeofObliviom

(Block with my 2 tokens; All parties die. Presumably you don't have any tricks what with the lack of mana.)

[roll0]

More blood is fed into the continually-expanding field of flowers, and the sounds emanating from the mist are beginning to resemble screams. More faeries rise to replace those who were just lost, but now some chanting seems to create an even greater field of blood-drinking flowers. The Faerie Champion smugly flies over the forces arrayed by the Planeswalker before striking him with a hard blow, attempting to dig more deeply into his life.

(During upkeep, Bitterblossoms trigger again to dump off 2 more faeries and I lose 2 more life. Play Creeping Tar Pit, play Beseech the Queen to call up a third Bitterblossom before playing that. Swing with Mistbind Clique for 4 damage. End turn.)

((That would be correct. In the future, perhaps I should reread the rules more closely before trying to pick things back up after two years...

That said, those were 1/1 tokens, and it was a 4/2 creature, so shouldn't two damage have gotten through to you, despite the mutual destruction? Or are glass cannons simply more brittle than one might expect? :smallconfused:

Oh, yes, and no attempt is made to block.))

[roll0]

The Planeswalker hissed in pain as the Champion's blow struck him, though once it had escaped and he could work without having to ward it off, the white lines flared harshly, once more opening a portal to a field of razorgrass, with a Gold Myr waiting on the other side to step through.

Meanwhile, the Alloy Myr swiftly began to grow, sprouting a barbed tail, thick armor plates, and forming an extra pair of arms from its chest as it did, shortly followed by it chittering sharp commands in some odd language to the others.

((Tap both Plains to play a Gold Myr. Tap the Gold Myr already on the field, the Alloy Myr, and the Forest to cast Alpha Status on the Alloy Myr, which gives it +2/+2 for each creature on the battlefield it shares a type with, making it a 6/6 creature.))

(Not unless it has trample. If Servant of Nefarox were a trampler, the mechanics would change a bit and I'd take the 2 damage.)

[roll0]

More blood flows into the floral bouquets of death as a gurgling cry of agony erupts from the mists. They seem to have faded enough where the silhouette near the center, a withered figure, seems to be properly visible.

In any case, more clouds of vicious Faeries than ever are taking to the field, and a leader seems to have emerged to properly organize them. They have become much deadlier for this as well, even as the champion strikes once more flanked by a pair of allies.

(Three Bitterblossoms activate, taking 3 life and giving 3 tokens. Play Secluded Glen tapped. Tap 3 to play another Beseech the Queen, tutoring Scion of Oona. Tap 3 more to play Scion of Oona. Swing with Mistbind Clique and 2 Faerie Tokens for 9 damage. End turn.)

One of the purple lines twisted and writhed to life, springing out to meld with the Alloy Myr, even as both Gold Myr began to glow, and emerald light flared into the webwork that was forming high above the field of war.

Through nexus of energy that formed above the planeswalker, which opened on a beautiful, but bleak, hall of jet and howlite, hung with faded tapestries, an angel flew, pointing her blade at the strange structure that had formed from the ruins, and speaking a single word, which seemed to cast a pall over the battleground, shortly followed by a column of divine flame lancing down to destroy it...

((Play Swamp. Tap everything to summon an Angel of Despair, use her ability to destroy the Dimir Aqueduct.))

(Ouch, landkilling? Yikes. A bit too late to really help, though.)

[roll0]

The blood pours into the flowers once more, and the faeries show no signs of stopping. A faint whimpering can be heard from the withered figure in the background, followed by whispering to an unseen figure.

~My Queen! I can uphold the bargain in the allotted time! I will not fail you! Please, one last chance!~

With that, the Faeries strike in a last-ditch assault, trying to defeat their opponent and uphold their bargain before their leader is drained completely dry of its vitality.

(Lose 3 life, Bitterblossom spawns 3 more Faeries. Swing with 5 2/2 Faerie Tokens and Mistbound Clique, a 5/5, for 15 damage. That's probably game, but I end my turn if you have a way out of that.)

((Well, I had to do something to keep you from being able to get anything else on the field. But yes, for the most part it is probably a touch late. I couldn't get the Black mana together to cast it (or most of the other nice stuff in my hand) until just now, since it all took once more than I had available.

Also, speaking of things in my hand, I made a clerical error a ways back, which resulted in me not realizing I had a Servant of Nefarox available, so that's been added into my hand now.))

[roll0]

The Gold Myr leapt into the fray, sacrificing themselves to wound the fairies, and keep their master safe. Though their Alpha, it seemed, had a more important task; that of stopping the Champion, which it did with alacrity, quickly crippling, though not killing, her and hanging the fae from one of the many barbs adorning it.

The Angel also swooped down to fight, easily lopping the head off of one of the faeries, though the battle delayed her enough that the rest got through unhindered.

((Block two of the Tokens with both Gold Myr, and one with the Angel of Despair. Block the Mistbound Clique with the Alloy Myr, leaving it at 2/1 until my next turn, when it goes back up to 2/2.))

(Umm, this may be something of a surprise if you weren't already aware, but Faerie Tokens are flyers. I'm pretty sure the Angel of Despair's the only one that can block.)

Lady Serpentine

((Ah. I had forgotten exactly what Flying did, yes. In that case, unless something I've just brought in can block, which I believe it can't, since it would already be tapped, that would indeed end the game. And possibly even if it can, since I don't think two points of healing would save me.

So, since I seem to be dead, good game. It was fun.))

And that sounds quite useful. I'll be sure to look it over.

Also, since part of the point of this was to playtest Blackdawn, do you have any tips on what I should do to it?))

BladeofObliviom

Alright, first thoughts after ten minutes of looking:

You seem to be running Green entirely for Alpha Status! It's not a bad card, but I don't see why you should be jumping into a third color for it alone.

You're running B/W without Vindicate (http://gatherer.wizards.com/pages/card/details.aspx?name=vindicate). This should be rectified.

Myr Prototype is... ...horrible. You could run virtually any other Myr and honestly have an improvement. If you just want a beater though, Myr Superion (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=194275) is going to be a vast improvement in the majority of cases.

Servant of Nefarox isn't a bad card, but I'd play Knight of Infamy (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=265735) over it any day.

Hivestone would be a good card in certain Sliver decks. With Alpha Status it might even be halfway relevant. But you certainly don't need to be running four copies in any deck.

Lady Serpentine
2012-11-19, 03:37 AM
Mostly because it goes very well indeed with Hivestone, if I can get a fair number of creatures on the field and put them both out. But they're too dependent on each other, and removing it would certainly free up some space that would be nice to have, as well as help me fix my mana issues, depending on what I take to replace the Forests I get rid of (I'm considering Dimir Aqueducts) so I think I'll get rid of them both.

Myr Prototype seemed okay with the Myr Reservoirs to feed them... Until one of those Reservoirs sat in my hand the whole game being useless. If I had other Myr with abilities that could be boosted like that - or something like the Superion - I might keep the latter but as it is those are both definitely out, yes.

Vindicate is definitely going in. That's half the reason I took the Angels of Despair, after all, and it's less than half the cost, as well as easier to get the colored mana for...

Knight of Infamy might end up replacing those, or I might keep the Servants and replace the Myr Prototypes with Knights.

What would you think of adding Alliance of Arms (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=228218) and/or Captain's Call (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=228218)? I'm also thinking about taking Cloudshift (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=240006), seeing as that would pair fairly well with Angel of Despair, and maybe Bloodline Keeper/Lord of Lineage (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=227061).

Dimir Aqueduct is a good card, but you don't need the Blue mana. In your case, I'm thinking Orzhov Basilica (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=247283) is more useful.

Myr Reservoir is a good card in certain dedicated Myr decks, usually ones that rely on a lot of token generation. Lix had a pretty crazy one that game my Fungus deck a pretty good match, if I recall correctly. In your case, though, I think it's best cut down to one or two copies.

You have 12 mana Myr, which is probably enough to run up to 3 Superion without clogging up your hand except in cases of terrible luck, which happens no matter how you build your deck.

Alliance of Arms is really meant for Multiplayer Decks that like tokens and soldiers. Notice that it gives your opponent just as many tokens, and probably does nothing for you in most cases.

Captain's Call is... ...not the best card. If you want some quick board presence, I'd personally recommend Raise the Alarm (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=222728) or Timely Reinforcements (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=220074) instead.

EDIT: Cloudshift is a really good card in certain decks, but I wouldn't use it when the only thing you really have to pair it with is your huge bomb creature that's not showing up until the late game anyway.

EDIT EDIT: Derp, forgot about Bloodline Keeper. I can tell you from experience that it's very strong, but it really belongs in a dedicated Vampire deck that can really take advantage of that. You can certainly make use of a copy or two, though.

Also, you might consider replaying Alloy Myr with Palladium Myr (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=212251): It produces more mana, though colorless, at the same cost.

Lady Serpentine
2012-11-19, 04:23 AM
Orzhov Basilica it is, then.

I think I'll cut it down to one and use the slots to get three Superions.

That was something worrying me about that one, yes. I might go with either of the two you recommend, or maybe use those spaces for Kemba's Skyguard (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=194083).

The difficulty with replacing the Alloy Myr with Palladium Myr is that Alloy Myr was the only thing letting me summon Black creatures most of the game, and could easily end up in the opposite position next time around, though admittedly, the Basilicas will help to some extent.

Child of Night (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=234560) seems like it could be useful for giving me something to heal with early on, especially if I don't take the Skyguards; would the Nighthawks already fill that niche?

BladeofObliviom
2012-11-19, 05:03 AM
Actually, I can think of a card that solves the lack of flyers problem and the lifegain problem rather neatly, at the same time. Vault Skirge (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=217984) is an unassuming 1/1, but it's a lifelinked flyer that can be a 1-drop if you're willing to pay a bit of life as a cost, or a 2-drop otherwise.

As for your mana problems, have you considered a stronger manabase? http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=241979 and Godless Shrine (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Discussion.aspx?multiverseid=96935) come to mind.

(Assuming we're going with 'high roll picks' this time, since you said that's what's normally used, I'll go second.)

[roll0]

Moments later, a door appears, and an androgyne, with hair so dark as to be almost black, though the dim light reveals it to actually be a metallic purple, wearing what seems to be a black silk shirt and pants of the same material, with a white leather jacket, the back of which bears an expertly done phoenix, steps through, the portal expanding to show that they seem to have come from a chapel in the midst of a fen, before the building solidifies behind them, another, this time in a different style, and set in the midst of a field of razorgrass, forming to the right as they do.

As soon as the temples fully appear, the androgyne murmurs a sibilant, liquid-sounding, incant, flooding the hell-pit that Cyrus summoned, which quickly quenches the fires within.

That done, they draw a back-curved knife, with a hooked blade, and draw it slowly across their left palm, cutting quite deeply, and letting the blood flow freely, which soon draws a strange patchwork zombie to their side.

"And the Heart finds that, as always, it bleeds to the Nightrose's thorns..."

(...Whoops. I forgot that there was a limit on how many one could play, that's how. Which I shouldn't have, since I just reread the rules last night, but yeah. It was a mistake on my part. (I suspect that the group I played with previously may have forgotten about that rule, or at least ignored it, based on my somewhat hazy recollections of the last time I played IRL, which may partially explain it, but still.)

So Lilium still appeared from where they did and summoned a Vault Skirge, but the only land actually in play is Swamp. I'll go edit what's on the field now.)

"For each drop of blood I take, I can drink more, for I grow in power as I do. Can you say the same of losing it?"

At a gesture from Lilium, the Vault Skirge darts forward, skimming insolently past the Herald to prey on Cyrus, or at least attempt to...

Meanwhile, from the waters at their feet, a dull machine, which seems to exude an aura of weight and decay, rises, though it seems as though it'll need a bit to recover from its long immersion.

Cyrus laughs, as a bloody altar appears on one of the sundered islands.

"Oh, you're quite mistaken if you believe I'm limited to bleeding on you. After all, what will you do when what you've imbibed burns with the weight of your sins... ...and mine?"

The Banneret takes its pike and marches forth, attempting to strike a glancing blow on the other Planeswalker, to accentuate the above point.

"I share many properties with my master. Among them, a certain resistance to fire. And my soul is his now, not my own, so if that is what you would seek to burn, feel free to attempt to harm a Demon with sins," the Planeswalker replies, shrugging, the burn left by the Banneret's weapon healing as she speaks.

At still more soft commands, one sounding like metal whispering against itself, and another that is simply a name, a Gold Myr flits out of the plain of razorgrass, and a knight in black armor, glowing a baleful red in places, rides out of the stables adjoining the decaying temple.

Meanwhile, the Vault Skirge zips forward again, through several smoke rings surrounding the Smokeinder this time, as though Lilium wishes it to show off...

Cyrus continues laughing.

"Well, you can take that literally if you want to. However, your little construct should really watch the skies better..."

With that, a bolt of aphotic lightning lances forth from ebon clouds that surely were not there a moment before, violently striking the Skirge in twain.

(Tap Lavaclaw Reaches, cast Lightning Bolt on Vault Skirge after it attacks but before it deals damage. This probably doesn't change much, but I'll ask if it does anyway before I go on.)

Cyrus finally stops laughing, settling on a wry grimace as further incantations over a new altar call an angry, canine beast of ash and flame to his side, even as the Herald and Artist strike with new fervor at the other Planeswalker.

"I hope you've got something good coming up, or you'll find that your rose isn't nearly as absorbent as you believe!"

The temple behind the androgyne begins to repair itself, outbuildings and mausoleums rising from the depths of the swamp in which it sat, while, in response to a hissing spell from them, the land opens beneath one of the bloody altars that Cyrus summoned, swallowing it whole.

Meanwhile, the Knight charges, sword dripping black fire, which, on coming in contact with the ground, eats away the soil, as he does.

No, no other actions until my next turn. Where hopefully I will draw something that's not a land card, for once. Last game, I couldn't get mana I didn't have to pay for to save my life, this game I can't get the things I'd use it on. :smallyuk:)

(Heh, I know how that is. At the moment I can't seem to draw any of my really effective cards. :smalltongue:)

Cyrus continues to grin.

"No more words for me, sweetcheeks? How pitiful your current efforts are. Oh well, best finished sooner rather than later!"

The Smokebraider seems to perform some ritual, and the festering hellpit that's been present since the beginning rises, a grotesque hand of sinew and molten stone rising forth to strike, even as the Hound and Herald make more mundane assaults.

(Play Badlands, then pay 3 mana to turn Lavaclaw Reaches into a creature until end of turn. Tap Smokebraider for 2 mana to pump Lavaclaw Reaches into a 4/2. Swing with Lavaclaw Reaches, Brighthearth Banneret, and Ashmouth Hound for a total of 7 damage. End turn.)

"For all of your boasting, you still need your fire. And it won't do much good as ashes, will it?", Lilium asks sweetly, laughing, and calling out a name to the sky, which is swiftly followed by the hell-pit dissolving into a spray of dust, which is itself anteceded by an angel bursting through the ebon clouds over the battleground.

"That would certainly explain why you're having so much difficulty with me," Lilium agrees, a grin settling over their features as Cyrus's fades. "Any idea on when you're going to do so?"

Meanwhile, another Myr steps from the temple behind them, this one seemingly made of some strange alloy, judging by its casing, and the strange lights dancing inside it.

Cyrus, as all this is going on, may begin finding it rather difficult to breathe as a result of the angel destroying the air around him from her place high above the battlefield...

Cyrus' face goes a bit pale as his lungs are deprived of proper oxygen, but he is sustained by the dark forces that normally keep him alive long past his previously scheduled death date.

"Precisely... ...now."

Unamused, he snaps his fingers. Instantly, the Angel, previously smug in its seeming superiority, screams in unbearable agony as its body collapses into dust from the outside inward, leaving only a still-beating heart to fall into the fires of Cyrus' rage.

"With that nuisance out of the way, shall we?"

(...Okay, this is getting a touch ridiculous. My last four rolls have been ones and twos. Can I get a new set of dice, please?)

The Gold Myr leaps in front of the Ashmouth Hound, sacrificing itself to protect its master. Though oddly, as they fall, the bodies merge, another Alloy Myr rising from the corpse...

As its 'sibling' rises, the one already on the field lopes forward, a pair of blades forming from its arms as it does.

((Block with Gold Myr, which was done, naturally before the turn started; I just wanted to see if I could write it into the narration more easily. Presumably, this destroys both of them. Tap Plains, Swamp, and Isolated Chapel to play Alloy Myr. Attack with the Alloy Myr already on the field.))

Lilium ignores the burning wounds left by the Hound, save for ordering the Leaden Myr to cast it back to Cyrus, which the machine proves quite effective at.

"Of course. It just wouldn't be fair, would it? Though I rather doubt that matters too much to either of us," they agree, laughing, and once again whispering some sort of sibilant, liquid-sounding, spell, this time drowning the Rakdos Carnarium.

With another imperious wave of their hand, they order both Alloy Myr to attack, though neither charges this time, instead calling down a rain of darksteel shards.

The Rider on the Beast dove in the way of one hail of shards, directing it away and back toward the myr casting it. However, the other hail grazed the planeswalker for a bit of damage.

Meanwhile, even as reality had begun to reassert itself around Cyrus, it simply falls apart once more, reduced to its most basic elements.

"Naturally. Not that you'll last much longer. Trying to cut me off from my mana is clever, but ultimately futile."

A slight wave of his hand, and both the Hound and Rider lash out at the other planeswalker, attempting to deal a grievous blow.

(As I didn't get something with Flying this turn, I believe there's no way for me to win this now. You're going to, unavoidably, put me at 1 Life on your turn, if you don't just send everything in. Even if I get Vindicate and then use it to get rid of Kulrath Knight, you can still rush me with everything, and since I only have one thing left to block with, there would be no way to avoid taking damage.

As such, I'm going to concede. Good game.

Thoughts on the deck:

The dice-roller certainly played a part, but I suspect that I may have gone a bit overboard compensating for the lack of mana the first time around. Four cards out of my opening hand were Lands, and just over half - five out of eight, if I counted right - of my draws were a land of some variety.

All those Myr were quite nice the first time around, when they were supplementing my lack of Lands. This, while they did play a part at times, they also got in the way of my getting things that would have been more useful, like Vampire Nighthawk.

Just over half my deck - thirty-six cards - is basically devoted entirely to mana production now. The Alloy Myr aren't bad, especially as they give some added versatility if I want something like Galvanic Blast (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Galvanic%20Blast) without having to run Red Lands (and in that specific case, they also power it up, since they're Artifacts), but I think that the Leaden and Gold can probably go.

I was considering taking Bleak Coven Vampires (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=209006), another two Bloodline Keepers/Lords of Lineage, and another pair of Vault Skirges to replace them. Thoughts?)

BladeofObliviom

Your idea isn't bad, though I definitely wouldn't run Myr Superion without lots of Creature Mana.

If you're interested in something a little crazier, though, you might consider Stillmoon Cavalier (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=153037), since it's overall very powerful and really likes it when you have mana to spare.

In other news, I'm noticing a few things that need to be rectified with Cyrus' deck that didn't come up in previous tests. Most notably, tribal synergies that do nothing because I'm only using the foundation for the tribe and not the good stuff. :smallsigh:

Lady Serpentine
2012-11-20, 04:56 PM
I might drop the Superions and Reservoir for those, then. That, or four Phyrexian Obliterators (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Phyrexian%20Obliterator).

Of course, in that case, I end up with only four artifacts in my deck, so taking them and using the Cavaliers in place of Bleak Coven Vampires might be a better choice.

(And more enchantments/spells would be good too... :smallsigh: For some reason I keep wanting to make this considerably larger than sixty cards.)

BladeofObliviom
2012-11-20, 05:04 PM
Well, you've got to pick and choose what you want to use. Honestly, though, using Phyrexian Obliterator in a casual game is just cruel. :smalltongue:

Lady Serpentine
2012-11-20, 05:18 PM
Well, of course. What do you expect from Phyrexia? :smallconfused::smalltongue:

More seriously, though, that is a good point... It's just that this is basically turning into "I will remove your lands somehow", and Phyrexian Obliterator fits that rather well.

BladeofObliviom
2012-11-20, 05:33 PM
...Okay, we may need to take a step back here. Land-killing, while a perfectly viable strategy, is generally not fun to play against. I actually used to run a deck whose main strategy was to abuse the combo between Contamination (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=5768) and Reassembling Skeleton (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=338402) to deadlock my opponent out of doing anything while I plinked away at their life total with a Black Knight or something.

After the first game, everybody else refused to play against it. It wasn't especially overpowered or unbeatable, it was just unfun to play against because it either worked, and said opponent spent the game unable to do anything, or it didn't and I spent the game unable to do much of anything. It was boring no matter how it went.

My point is that mana denial isn't a bad strategy, but using it as a primary focus for a deck isn't going to win you any friends.

Lady Serpentine
2012-11-20, 06:01 PM
Also a fair point. And, too, I suspect that the main reason that that seemed to be the best strategy actually has more to do with the particular things I found myself up against than it does that being a good focus for the deck, so I'll not be going that route.

Here's what I think I'll be going with:

If you'd like a fairer test, I have a completely untested deck of my own that I've been meaning to try out.

From the aether, an enormous forge of steel and stone forms, presided over by a man who appears rather military; His stature is tall, his stance is rigid, and a blade adorns his hip.

"State thy presence, foe."

It is an imperious command, not even perturbed by the idea of a hidden infiltrator in his midst.

The great foundry seems to triple in size, producing far more mana than it had been before. A new soldier, a unit specializing in fire magic, moves in to support the other recruit. Meanwhile, the recruit becomes a platoon, a team of men being somewhat stronger than than the one that had been there initially.

The Commanding Planeswalker has no further words at the moment, merely watching.

The outbuildings form around the temple Lilium sits on the steps of, patches of razorgrass retreating as they do, forming paths between then, hemmed in and over with bladed walls of the strange plant...

The strange Knight charges at the Planeswalker, drawing a spiked flail as he does, which he tries to use to pull the enemy commander off his feet.

Meanwhile, another horseman rides up next to Lilium, this one a skeleton in ragged chainmail, with a full moon burned into its skull.

The razorgrass surrounding the temple grows thicker, and sharper, forming thorny gates preventing entrance to the paths, and set at intervals along them, though how one is supposed to open them without losing fingers is unclear...

However, the myster is quickly dispelled; as the Cavalier races towards the nearest, it swings open, presumably reacting to its presence.

Meanwhile, yet another horseman, this one a Paladin, rides forth from the stables, though as yet, he doesn't join anyone...

Another serious blow is taken by the Commander, who grunts rather than admitting any real pain. He seems to gnash his teeth under his helmet in barely-restrained rage, frustrated at foes who are immune to the majority of his tools.

The planeswalker barks out some new orders, and a set of volcanic cannons is installed on the parapets of the Fortress-Foundry, in addition to a squad of Swiftblades being summoned for use as soon as a gap appears in those defenses. The Pyromancer supports this new group rather than the old one, since his capacity for damage is vastly increased there.

Lilium simply laughs, flicking a finger at the cannons, which sends a wave of ice through them, then twists her hand to one side, shattering the newly-frozen weaponry.

That done, she whispers a quiet spell, that seems to pry at the edges of the mind, drawing a zombie from one of the graves that wait at the side of the temple.

The Cavalier rides out once again, the moon-mark burned into its forehead beginning to glow as the sun slowly sets...

The Commander breathes a soft sigh of relief at the lull in the assault, but he knows that they'll be back in force at any moment. He calls up one of the more dangerous creatures in his arsenal, one of the mighty Balefire Lieutenants.

However, he's not so foolish as to risk an attack at this moment; His forces are strong, but they'd likely break against what his opponent has to offer. However, shoring up his defenses might give him a chance to win this...

"Not a bad thought, dear, but unfortunately, not good enough...", Lilium says sweetly, trapping the newly-summoned spirit in a goblet with a wave of her hand.

Meanwhile, as treacherous-looking fens form around the temple, just outside the walls of razorgrass, the Cavalier's moon-mark blazes with light, and it rises into the air, the zombie Lilium summoned before settling onto its free arm like a hawk as it does, shortly followed by it charging the Commander, releasing the Vault Skirge partway through its descent as a distraction.

Beginning to get desperate, the commander seems to pull out all the stops. A dwarven wizard appears from seemingly nowhere, catching the Skirge off guard and destabilizing it to the point of explosion, while a bolt of lightning lances through the previously threatening Cavalier.

Still, he doesn't risk attacking. He has a feeling it wouldn't go well.

The commander, still quite furious with his inability to make any real headway, channels more mana into his main battalion. Out of nowhere, their numbers double, they grow luminescent wings, and wield strange gunpowder contraptions in addition to blades. Moving in a vicious assault formation, they strike deeply into the heart of their foe, attempting to deal a vicious blow before they are forced to retreat.

The fens around the religious edifice that Lilium is defending grow still more dangerous, at least so far as can be told, strange creatures adding themselves to them, in addition to the hazard presented by the environment itself...

The vampires, however, seem to have no difficulty navigating it to strike at their ruler's foe, laughing exultantly as they charge, clearly pleased to finally be unleashed.

Meanwhile, Lilium drains the goblet with the spirit in it, and stands, for once showing respect to something, intoning a short prayer, in response to which an angel steps out of the temple, and launches herself into the sky, banishing the Avatar as she does.

(Block with the Hedge-mage. It dies.)

[roll0]

The Dwarven Mage gives up his life, throwing himself into the path of ravenous vampires for the greater good, while the bulk of the army is singlehandedly slaughtered by the unending despair of the Fallen Angel upon the other side of the field.

"The Night is Darkest, just before the Dawn."

The Commander seems taken aback at such gruesome losses, but takes on his normal impassive tone within moments as a new radiance comes: A stark contrast from the dark Angel of Entropy gazing over the other side of the battlefield, a truly luminescent angel rises above the foundry, bringing honor and love upon the field in ways that the Commander could only have dreamed of without her aid. This was no mere feather-winged woman, but Gisela, one of the great Retainers of Avacyn herself.

And she could singlehandedly turn the tide, if she were to go undefeated.

"So, you would take to the skies as well? I think you'll find I still have an edge there soon enough..."

With that, another vampire exits the temple, this one from a door on the roof, though he doesn't remain there long, quickly stepping off the edge, and hovering in midair below the Angel of Despair.

Another of the strange Knights rides out from the stables, taking up a position by the first, though this one bears an unusual sword, one that seems to have teeth in place of a normal edge, instead of a spiked flail...

Anyway, block with Stonewright (who is pure red and bypasses protection from white), and use its firebreathing to give it +1/+0 until end of turn since I never used any mana last turn. Glory of War makes it therefore a 2/3, and Gisela's effect means that it deals 4 damage to your Knight and only takes 2 damage. Overall, Knight dead and Stonewright standing.))

(Ah, I see my mistake. When I'd looked at your field section at first, it hadn't yet been updated.)

[roll0]

"You cannot achieve victory through stalemate; If even one of my soldiers were to slip past your defenses, you'd be finished."

Another Pyromancer takes to the field, supporting the new battalion of Swiftblades. Drawn-out encounters were not unfamiliar to the Commander; He'd been involved in the Battle over the Mosse Aetherstream, after all.

(For half a second I thought I'd drawn a Bonfire of the Damned. That would have been an instant victory. :smalltongue: Play Stonewright and pair it with my unpaired Swiftblade, then end turn.)

"You have wasted enough of my time, I think. Gisela, finish it."

The Angelic Retainer obediently calls down the greatest attack in her arsenal, fueled by the Commander's strength. A beam of concentrated heat, burning with the intensity of a thousand stars, lances across the battlefield as the Angel simply sweeps it through enemy lines.

When it is over, the battlefield is shrouded in smoke and plasma, and there is little more to say.

((Miracle! Cast Bonfire of the Damned as soon as it's drawn, putting 9 mana into it. Gisela doubles the damage involved, so it deals 16 damage to you and everything you control. So, erm, that's probably game. :smalleek:))

((Seeing as I don't have a Vindicate to play, or anything like that, yes, it is.

Good game. It was interesting, to say the least.

Deck thoughts:

This worked quite well, until you got Gisela, and even that was mostly luck, since what ended the game rather than turn it into a protracted battle was Bonfire of the Damned, and I could just as easily have gotten Vindicate or another Angel of Despair as you did that. Besides which, Gisela seems like the sort of card that would be rather difficult to balance against in any case.

That said, the Alloy Myr seem to be proving mostly superfluous, now that I've gotten rid of the Superions. Replacing them may be in order. Possibly Children of Night would work in their stead, to go with the Bloodline Keepers/Lords of Lineage, and add more things with lifelink?

And now I think I'll set to work on a Green/Black deck.))

BladeofObliviom
2012-11-22, 04:50 AM
((Yeah, you're kinda right about that. If I learned anything from this game, it's that Gisela is a 10/10 Flying First Strike for 7 that completely warps the game for you. :smalltongue:

Also, Bonfire of the Damned is hilarious overkill.

Anyway, you're probably right about the Myr. Funny how decks take drastic shifts while they're being built? About the only thing left of the original at this point is Angel of Despair. :smalltongue:

If you have a green/black list, I'm still willing to go over it with you and/or test.))

And the Nighthawks were in the first list too, I just added an extra pair of them. Which I still haven't gotten to use yet. I was looking forward to a playing Double Striker with Deathtouch. :smallfrown:

(Yeah, Avacyn would have been hilarious. Wouldn't have helped much against the Bonfire, though. :smalltongue:)

Alright, my first thoughts:

Sprouting Thrinax and Aether Mutation require red and blue mana respectively, which you do not have. So they're just dead weight.

Acolyte of Xathrid is generally a pretty terrible card. If it could do damage to creatures it might be playable, but that's just terrible. You could do better with a vanilla 1/1.

Agonizing Demise can't be kicked because you don't have red, so it's just a subpar kill spell. I'd recommend Doom Blade or Murder over it just about any day.

Agadeem Occultist is actually an excellent card, but it's really meant to be used in a dedicated ally deck. At best you might pick up somebody's chump-blocking one-drop. If you really need cheap 1/1s, there are much better options.

Crypt of Agadeem is good in the right deck, but here it's more likely to hinder than to help.

Addle isn't a terrible card, but you can do a lot better. Personally, I'm a big fan of Thoughtseize (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=145969) and Hymn to Tourach (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=159180).

Stillmoon Cavalier is a great card, but note that your mana is split now and you can only spend the black part on its abilities.

Whoops. I meant to take out the first, and the latter used to be possible, but I cleared out the Dimir Aqueducts... Deck design at five thirty in the morning is, perhaps, not the best idea. I'll go fix that.

Ah. That's a 0/1, not a 1/1... Whoops. Again, lateness.

Conditioned by Alloy Myr? I'm not that familiar with kill spells, though, so chalk that one up to not knowing anything better at the time.

Considering token generation is something I'd like more of, and Turntimber Ranger (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Discussion.aspx?multiverseid=169971) is also an ally card, I suspect I may end up adding more of those, especially with all the stuff I'm pulling out of this.

Hm... True. My Black cards are actually the ones least likely to get killed. :smallsigh:

Those are rather nice, yes.

Indeed. Hopefully it'll work out, but if not I suppose I can swap them out for something... Have to see how things go in play

Here's a revised list:

4 Stillmoon Cavaliers
2 Thoughtseizes (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=145969)

Meanwhile, the skeletons that were destroyed slowly drag themselves back together, taking up positions in front of the Planeswalker...

The creature's reaction is nothing more than an annoyed gurgle as it claws the throat out of an unfortunate faerie before relaying another direct assault.

(Cast Go for the Throat on your flying token, breaking its soulbond with Trusted Forcemage. Animate Inkmoth Nexus, drop a swamp, swing with both Crusaders and Inkmoth Nexus for 5. End turn.)

((I don't believe anything I have can block, so that, I think, ends the game. On the off chance I can, though, I'll use Reassembling Skeleton to block one of the Crusaders.

Just in case, my roll:

(You can block the Crusaders; They're on the ground. The Inkmoths have flying, but the others are fair game.)

((Sorry about that. The computer has started shutting off completely any time the cord has to be switched over to the other one, and I'm sick right now.))
