I'm using the d20pfsrd and it says that any Tiefling that wishes to use a variant tiefling heritage must purchase the Fiendish Heritage feat, but Aasimar's that wish to use variant aasimar heritages do not seem to have the same prerequisite of an equivalent feat. Is the SRD missing information or is this RAW?

The Pathfinder books "Blood of Fiends" and "Blood of Angels" don't make any reference to needing a Fiendish Heritage feat to use their variant heritages.
Pretty sure it's just the SRD messing up.

There a couple of Alternative Heritages out there. There is the one in the Complete Races guide. There is also one in a adventure series. So you will have to see which way your gamemaster is going to do go. Making a Tiefling character will take a bit a work to make a go of it.

Regarding Tieflings: The SRD actually says that you may or may not need the feat depending on how the DM feels.

Players with a particular character concept in mind may consult their GM if they want to select a specific variant ability or may take the Fiendish Heritage feat.

Regarding Aasimars: There is no feat for Aasimars so they can pick whatever they want without DM fiat.

My ruling: No one needs the feat unless they want to "roll a 100" on the varient features table and pick two special powers.

I actually treat that feat as "Pick one, roll the other". Some of the things on that list are really not featworthy, and most folk are really just going to pick the +2 to stat X. Take a feat, get a +2 to a stat, and a random RP fluff bonus.

But yeah, RAW, you "May" need that feat to use the alternate heritages. Meaning you do.

Tiefling Alternate Heritages predate the Aasimar ones by about 2 years.
They were (apparently) determined to not be powerful enough to require a feat in the meantime, and so when Advanced Race Guide came out they just gave them to the Aasimar without requiring a Feat.

So basically, you have a good argument for Tieflings not needing the feat.

Hi - first post.

No feat needed.

In the original printing (bastards of erebus) a feat was needed for the Tiefling to take an alternate heritage.

Feat -> http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/fiendish-heritage

The newest release of this same material (blood of fiends) makes no mention of the feat at all. It just recommends DM approval. The SRD just needs a small tweak.
