I'm putting together the party's wizard right now. I would love to make him a focused specialist conjurer, but that requires giving up three schools out of eight, and the problem is I want/need to also serve as the party crafter (Wands, Arms & Armor, Wonderous Items).

I know each item lists which spells are required to craft it, and you can look up each spell to see what school it's on, but I could spend the next week do that for all items we might eventually want.

So I was wondering, has anyone done any kind of analysis on this problem? Which schools' spells are most widely used in the making of magic items, especially the Big Six?

PS-I was intending to drop Enchantment and Illusion if I specialize, and possibly Evocation if I go focused specialist. We have a Beguiler in the party, so I figured he could pitch in where I can't.

The Beguiler can indeed pitch in for spells. More generally though, often item creation is done during downtime, and you should be able to get NPC casters to provide the requisite spells most of the time while you provide the XP and feat.

Didn't know that. Are the rules for multi-person crafting somewhere?

You do give up the security of knowing you can make it yourself even if the DM makes the right NPC too hard to find, but it does make me feel better about being focused knowing that at least there's a chance.

Thanks!

Speaking of schools...

I'm taking the Collegiate Wizard feat from Complete Arcane pg181:

You begin play with knowledge of six 1st-level spells plus 1 per point of Intelligence modifier. Each time you gain a wizard level, you may add four spells to your spellbook without additional research. In addition, you gain a +2 bonus on all Knowledge (arcana) checks.

Considering this rule from PHB pg179:

Each time a character attains a new wizard level, she gains two spells of her choice to add to her spellbook. These spells represent the results of her research. The two free spells must be of spell levels she can cast. If she has chosen to specialize in a school of magic, one of the two free spells must be from her specialty school.

Would that mean that two of the four spells I choose from be from my specialty school? It's not explicitly covered, but that would seem to be a reasonable extrapolation in terms of the point of the PHB rule and the balance it's trying to achieve.

By RAW, a specialist Wizard need only take 1 of his level-granted spells from his specialty school, no matter how many spells you normally get.

Thanks, I'll go with that, then.
