Hey, y'all.

So we're trying to decode Pathfinder's infamously complicated and confusing system for Invisibility, and we're pretty sure we've got most of it figured, but there's one bit in particular that's confounding us.

On this (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/special-abilities#TOC-Invisibility)page, it lists one of the modifiers for being detected as "Invisible creature is in combat or speaking," then the "Perception DC Modifier" to detect them is "–20."

Our question is what "in combat" means in this context.

The two competing theories are:

1) In combat means, "entering combat initiative and taking actions." Under this interpretation, if you're in combat initiative, and you're casting a silent spell, stabilizing a downed ally, or drinking a potion, you get the -20

2) In combat means, "the actual act of fighting." Under this interpretation, if you're in combat initiative, and you're casting a silent spell, stabilizing a downed ally, or drinking a potion, there is no bonus to detect you. If you smack someone with a sword, or if someone smacks you, you get the -20. If you cast a spell with verbal components, you get the -20.

Opinions? How have other folks run this?

Number two. If the invisible creature is trying to move silently away from a fight that has turned sour, it we be contradictory to give them a -20.
