I'm trying to come up with a solid build for Robert Howard's pussiant Puritan. I'm thinking about 12 levels, give or take, in a low-magic setting. Assume that firearms are a Martial WP and use the Defense alternate rules from PHB II. For those who have never read Solomon Kane, he is described as a pale, solomn man with cold eyes and a cat-like grace, clothed in the simple, dark garb of a 16' - 1700's Puritan. He favors the rapier and dagger, but is also deadly with the brace of flintlock pistols he wears when he knows he' swalking into danger.
I'm seeing mostly Swashbuckler (homebrewed to include the Riposte Sp Ab from Cityscape) and Fighter (varriations galore) levels, making him a solid melee combatant. He should be a quick and cunning fighter, so Dex and Int should be pretty high, though like most pulp heroes he is likely to have MADly impressive stats. He should have the Resilliant (CC) ACF for one of his Fighter levels, and at some point Mettel is appropriate. Other class possibilities that come to mind are Barbarian (Whrling Frenzy & Lion Totem Pounce), Crusader-dip, or maybe some Paladin varriant. There is a PrC in Tome of Magic that seems good, a Witch-Hunter or something (I don't have my books about me right now), but I'm not sure yet.
Feats: Combat Reflexes, Deadly Defense, Two-Weapon Fighting, and Weapon Finesse are all solid. Maybe Knowledge Devotion, but I'm not sure. Considering the punishment he takes in a fight and how he seems to feed off of it, Kharmic Strike or Robilar's Gambit are appropriate. Asside from that, I don't know.
Skills: His physical skills (Balance, Climb, Jump, Tumble) are probably respectable, but not necessarily maxed-out. He should be familiar with Knowledges (Local, History, Religion, and, later on, Arcane). The skills he displays most strongly are Intimidate and Sense Motive. He has also been noted as a competant horseman and an experienced sailor.
I'm working on a couple of potential builds tonight; I'll try to post one by tomorrow, but don't wait on me. Oh, and I'm only familiar with Howard's writing; I haven't seen the movie yet, and I have a graphic novel on the way, so if there's any characteristics I've missed, please make mention.
