Ninja has poison use, as do some of the Drow substitution levels in Drow of the Underdark (Rogue and I think another one... these work best with LA +0 Drow versions/subraces), and it's also directly available through a few racial selections (Marrulurk, Poison Dusk Lizardfolk, Jungle Halfling off-hand).

You'll probably want to check out the poisons handbook (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=2714.0). It does a good job addressing what poisons are good for and how to use them effectively.

The easy rule of thumb is that if you can get it cheap and get it a decent chance of success without investing many character resources into it specifically, Poison can be a useful add-on for a character (especially at low-mid levels), but it doesn't have the versatility or reliability to base a character completely around.

Poison has a sweet spot. At low levels, it is too expensive to use very often. At high levels, people have enough Fort save or are immune to poison. At level 4ish? It could work, depending on the campaign.

It is also difficult to re-apply poison in combat without more investment than simply getting Poison Use.

Druid is a solid choice, because they get the Poison (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/poison.htm) spell. Unlike most spells, the DC on this scales with half caster level, rather than with spell level. That makes it more relevant after you get 4th or even 5th level spells. It's still not amazing, but it's something. And if you have caster level shenanigans it is better.
