Equestria is a big place, and while Ponyville might be idyllic, the lands at the edge of the map are still hard places for hard-working ponies. You are a group of friends, most recently from Canterlot, working for the Princesses. Ordinarily it's a cush job; that Twilight Sparkle filly and her friends take all the hard missions, like that thing with Discord last year, and that bit with the wedding. But they're out doing something involving crystals and family reunions — you aren't really sure what — and something's come up.

Out in the frontier, beyond Stalliongrad, where Equestria butts up against dragon lands, the gryphon kingdoms, and even the plains of the nomad zebra, a thriving settlement stands: the town of Bridle. Rumors have reached Celestia's ears of trouble in the mountains: stirrings among the younger dragons, trouble with the old giants of the woods, unrest in the gryphon kingdom and worse. Luna's visions are far more troubling: strange, bipedal creatures, bellowing in rage, united under the banner of a red clawed hand.

You are Bridle's only hope, for if it falls, Stalliongrad is soon to follow... and with it, perhaps, all Equestria.

Welcome to the Red Hoof of Doom.

Campaign Notes

On Character CreationCharacters must be made using Dungeons and Dragons: Friendship is Magic (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-OfetQXp_GcWW5ZZk91d3NOb1k/edit?usp=sharing); any character type that is not an Earth Pony, Unicorn Pony or Pegasus Pony needs to fit the setting.
On Favored Classes: No experience point penalty for multiclassing. We'll use the PF rule: levels in your favored class grant either an extra hit point or an extra skill point per level.
On Paladins: Won't fall for associating with Evil people. Will fall for failing to attempt to prevent an Evil act. Celestia, Luna, and Princess Platinum all accept traditional Paladins. Commander Hurricane, Chancellor Puddinghead, and Celestia all accept Paladins of Freedom. Nightmare Moon, Chrysalis, and Princess Platinum all accept Paladins of Tyranny. Paladins of Slaughter do not play well with others and you should feel bad for wanting to play one in this game.
On Preferences: I would prefer players who have never finished the module Red Hand of Doom. I prefer characters with ties to each other, who fit the setting. I prefer players who are interested in having fun. I prefer roleplaying over not. Things to think about.
On The Unicorn Versatile Mark Feat: This lets you cast a 2nd-level spell as your cutie mark (interacting normally with Enduring Mark). You make take this feat multiple times; each time it increases the spell level by one (to a maximum of 9th level). A wizard may take this as a wizard bonus feat. Be advised: your Cutie Mark spell is an SLA.
On Languages:

Equestrian — Common.
Gryphon — Dwarven
Zebra — Halfling
Whitetail — Elven
High Equestrian — Celestial
Discordian — Abyssal
Tartaran — Infernal
Giant, Druidic, and Elemental languages are the same.

It's Dangerous To Go Alone: Take This! Pony Creator (http://generalzoi.deviantart.com/art/Pony-Creator-Full-Version-254295904). Because you'll probably want us to know what your pony looks like.

BackgroundThe frontier can be a dangerous place. Bookend was born to an adventurer from Whinnychester, Trailblaze Beacon, who immigrated to Equestria and settled down in Bridle, a town that offered infinite opportunities for one with an outdoorsy inclination. His father is Rock, an warrior from the Painted Hoof tribe nearby that Bridle had a tenous relationship too; They came into some conflict occasionally but also sometimes helped one another. Trailblaze accidentally (if happily) married Rock, which would go a long way to helping resolve the issues the natives had with the townspeople, and vice-versa.

Trailblaze and Rock were both independant ponies and refused to give up their cultures. Instead they decided to live seperately but to meet frequently. Both were fairly happy with the arrangement, though it meant there were some times they were seperated from the other half of their families, and that was always sad. Bookend was raised mostly by his mother, learning how to track and survive in the wilderness. His father raised Breeze, Bookend's little sister, who found she had a talent for Speaking to the Earth and is currently the apprentice of the tribe's shaman.

As a child, Bookend was very boisterous. His father was the Strongest Pony EVER and he thought that his father would approve of him if he grew strong enough. Of course, when Rock found out he chastised his son, telling him that some things are more important than strength. Which seemed silly to Book at the time. However, Bookend soon came to realize that what he would shrug off other ponies would get hurt from. He looked around and saw that none of the foals around him his age were as big or strong as he was, and he remembered how his father had handled Trailblaze and Breeze with gentleness, and began to understand.

While Bookend was still a colt, he and a friend got into trouble. Dusty Tomes had borrowed a book from a traveling trader some about ruins near Bridle, and rather than let his friend go alone, Bookend followed him. It wasn't anything dangerous (only an old tavern) but the book accidently got dirty and they were forced to buy it from the trader. Dusty was over the moon about his new cutie mark, and deciphered the book for Bookend. Bookend read it, at first reluctantly and then with more enthusiasm as the story got more interesting. When he finally put it down, he found he had another book - a book on his flank. He finally realized how much he'd enjoyed reading, and decided to find some more books.

It wasn't long until Bookend had read every book in Bridle. He heard stories from his mom about an old friend who worked in a place that had an endless number of books, and Bookend became determined to see it. He started working and saving up, slowly getting enough money to buy a ticket to Canterlot. He couldn't get much work done when he stayed with his father, as they didn't seem to use currency anyway, but his father taught him other things, such as how to defend himself - and, if necessary, those he cared for.

At the age of 17, Bookend got enough money for a one-way ticket to Canterlot. On his first day there, Bookend volunteered at the library. After a period of training, Bookend was given the task of guiding patrons through the treacherous Lost Catacombs of Fiction. He learned quickly, and impressed the head librarian with his skill in navigating the Dewey Decimal system, his strength to carry even the heaviest tomes, and his ability to not be killed by deathtraps. During that time, Bookend made lots of friends; regulars at the library became familiar with the sound of Bookend's hooves as he fled from the Colossal Spitball. He never did figure out how to get around that trap.

Bookend eventually left Canterlot and returned to Bridle with some friends met during his stay there, under orders from Princss Celestia. One day Bookend hopes to open Bridle's first library. But the frontier is a dangerous place...Cutie Mark: Filling in the BlanksAppearance: Bookend's Cutie mark takes the form of a closed green book.

Benefit: Filling in the Blanks grants Bookend a +6 bonus to Decipher Script and Forgery checks as long as he has a piece of the document to be forged. Bookend is great at teasing out the hidden meanings behind the words, and has more luck finding a book to grant him a competency bonus to Knowledge checks.WhinnychesterA long time ago, before Equestria was created, Earth Ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi were seperated into tribes, kept apart by hatred. The story of their reconciling is told every year on Hearth's Warming Eve, the story of the founding of Equestria.

Yet the three leaders credited with coming together to form this kingdom were not the only ones sent by their respective tribes. A small entourage was dispatched from the Earth Pony tribe in the opposite direction from Chancellor Puddinghead. They found suitable land, but land that was already inhabited. Another tribe of Earth Ponies, more primative than the settlers and who had never had contact with outsiders, lived there and it wasn't long before conflict threatened to rear it's head.

In order to forestall war, Jewel Stonecrown, the young shamaness of the primitive tribe, offered the newcomers a contest by champion. The newcomers had seen the primitive tribes strength, and almost to the last pony denied the offer. Except for one pony, an unassuming young construction worker named Mallet Ivycoat. Mallet accepted the challenge, despite protests and orders not to, and met the primitive tribes champion in single combat. The other tribes champion was a beast of a pony known as Redeye Rockjaw, and the strongest stallion in the entire tribe. Mallet's strength couldn't compare - but his mind could. Mallet was nimbler and smarter than the hulking pony and, after a long and grueling battle, was ultimately victorious. The primitive tribe was certain he had cheated, but the shamaness had fallen in love with Mallet's courage. She walked out onto the battlefield and, to the surprise of every pony of both tribes, offered her own hoof in marriage to the hero. Mallet saw her beauty and kindness, and agreed.

The two tribes lived in close proximity, the primitive tribe in their tents and the settlers behind the walls of Whinnychester. Over generations, they intermingled, as ponies of both sides left their tribes to live amongst the other. The city expanded ever onward, ruled by the descendants of Ivycoat and Stonecrown, until eventually the rest of the tribe was absorbed into the city. Queen Lapis Ivycoat-Stonecrown was the last ruler to use the full names of both founders; her son became King Granite Ivycrown, finding it fitting for the green-hued crown he had had created. His descendants have used that surname for centuries.

Jewel Stonecrown tied her people to the land, and her mere existance - like the existance of her mother and grandmother before her - caused the land to be fruitful, or so the legends say. Almost all inhabitants of Whinnychester believe in this tale, and that the Monarch's since have inherited her bond to the land. They believe that as long as their Queen remains healthy, aslong as the blood of Stonecrown still flows through the veins of whoever wears the Crown of Ivy, the land will flourish.

Despite it's origins as an Earth Pony city, Whinnychester has long since integrated ponies of all types into it's kingdom. The current Monarch is Queen Gilding Ivycrown II. The Monarchs have very little responsibilities beyond existing, for the good of the land. Yet the aging Queen is most beloved of her subjects. So beloved in fact, that the recent drop in harvest has more ponies worried about the Queen's health than the kingdom's well being. Truthfully, the Parliament is more involved in the governing of the kingdom, yet the Queen is more than just a well-to-do Earth Pony, she's a figurehead, a symbol of the entire kingdom, it's most recognizable face.Verax OculusThis group, mostly ponies, was very famous in Whinnychester 30 years ago. Leaving behind families, jobs and common sense, they journeyed far and wide, managed to save the kingdom from a previously unknown threat, and were recognized by the Queen herself as heroes. They carried on for several years, before they left Whinnychester to the shock of all and moved to Equestria. It's uncertain as to the reason behind this, but the group did not survive the move. On arriving in Equestria, most of Verax Oculus went their seperate ways.

Lord WhitetaileA pegasus known for his ability at command; both tactical brilliance and ability to inspire, as well as his diplomatic proficiency. He was widely considered the leader of his group. Currently, he's in active retirement living in Cloudsdale, though many of the brightest minds in the kingdom visit him to play a game of Cloud Chess.Trailblaze BeaconThe adventurous Trailblaze is quick and nimble. Assuredly, her departure had nothing to do with the theft of the precious Horcestershire Salt And Pepper Pots, infinitely detailed and made of gold and silver (respectively), stolen two weeks before her departure. Currently living in Bridle working as a guide (and, unofficially, diplomat between Bridle and the Painted Hoof tribe.). For more, see above.Sir BuckinghamA scholar and a Gentlecolt. Sir Buckingham is a Unicorn, and a mage of the finest quality. He currently sees employment by Princess Celestia, as Head Librarian of the Royal Canterlot Library. The GriffonThe only member not from Whinnychester, The Griffon is a powerful warrior. Not much is known about his background or where he's currently at.EartheartAn Earth Pony from a very poor family, Eartheart grew up near the soil, and formed a bond with it, using it perform near miracles. He is married to another pony on the list; Dame Lancet Ironshield. He and his wife settled down in Manehattan, where he is currently employed as a gardener.Dame Lancet IronshieldA noble who's family lost most of their fortune, if not their title. Lancet is a Knight Pegasii, and a former member of Whinnychester's strongest military unit. She left all that behind to marry Eartheart and move to Equestria. She and her husband settled down in Manehattan, where she teaches Knight Pegasii the ins-and-outs of the trade.Miss Docere Em DeeA shy and delicate unicorn healer, Docere was a schoolmistress before she found what she thought of as her calling. Indeed, Miss Docere quickly became one of the greatest healers in Whinnychester. Despite seeming delicate, when confronted with a medical issue she could be quite forceful in order to get what she knew was needed, causing some reticent patients to eventually become terrified by her approach. Her exact whereabouts are currently unknown, as she's wondering Equestria offering healing to anypony that needs it.

Being as Bridle's current write-up has only a Temple of Celestia and a Temple of Luna, you're probably the head of the Parthenon of Commander Hurricane. This is a recent position, and probably the reason you've ended up in Bridle.

We'll work out similar things for everyone else in the Bridle crowd: for instance, Lord Emeraldcoat may be well-known as an eccentric old inventor. I'll work on developing the city for you all this week.

Background
Dusty Tomes was born in Vanhoover to a unicorn couple, and spent most of his childhood there, but didn't earn his cutie mark until he and his family moved to Bridle. Dusty was raised more as a unicorn than as an earth pony, and as such showed a more scholarly bent then was usual. As he was late in getting his mark, he tried many things to find his talent before moving to Bridle (not in any fashion related to a certain trio we know, :elan:), leading to him becoming unusually skilled in a wide variety of things.

Soon after moving to Bridle, while exploring and playing in the forest near the town, Dusty Tomes stumbled across a ruin from centuries ago. The ruins and their strange writings entranced Dusty, and he spent the next week trying to decipher their secrets .He borrowed a book from a trader, while he was there he got help from his new friend Bookend. The two of them managed to make their way through the ruins and find the secret of the ruins (it was only an old tavern, albeit one from before the town was their). The two of them earned their marks that day, Dusty finding an open book and brush on his flank. Dusty found he had a liking for such things, and later became an archaeologist.

During Dusty's years as an archaeologist, he traveled all over Equestria and beyond. He has traveled to Zebrica, as well as the Griffon lands. He hasn't made any finds that make him famous, but he has done enough to get him known in the archaeologist community. Occasionally while working he has employed the services of a unicorn named Seismic Fault, a geomancy specialist who has aided him in clearing collapsed tunnels and the like. He has recently traveled to Canterlot, wanting to access the great library for research, also o meet up with his old friend Bookend.

As an aside, he has a mixed view of the Daring Do series, as while he acknowledges that they are decent literature, he scoffs at the dramatization. The last tomb he explored hardly had any deathtraps.

Cutie Mark
Dusty Tome's cutie mark is of an open book with an archaeologist's brush over top of it, representing his skill in deciphering unknown languages. He gets his bonus on checks to understand lost forms of communication.

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/4789/charcoal.png

Background
Born in Canterlot, Charcoal was quite an unusual child. He always was full of energy, and despite being an unicorn he displayed little to no magical talent. While other babies would go through short surges of magic , he never did anything of the sort. Of course, his parents simply chalked it up to him being a late bloomer, and raised him lovingly.

When he entered magic kindergarten, things became more complicated. His lack of magic quickly became a problem, as he failed even the easiest of tests, and even magical theory just never seemed to be doable to him. He quickly became a laughing stock and he was relentlessly teased for his failures. Still, Charcoal was not one to just give up, and so he kept on studying, determined to become a good magician. He spent most of his free time in the library, reading through tome after tome, yet none of it seemed to find its way into his head. Perhaps he wouldn't even have made it through magical primary school, had he not found that book.

It was Charcoals second year in primary, and he still hadn't created as much as a spark. Needless to say, still being a blank flank and being unable to use any magic was detrimental to his popularity. Desperate for a solution, he asked his parents if he could search for some books on magic in the old possesions of his late grandfather, Brimstone. Brimstone had been a mighty wizard in his lifetime, and Charcoal always had wondered why he had inherited none of his talent. Still, if there was a solution to be found in the possesions of the old stallion, Charcoal was willng to find it. And find it he did.

It was a fairly thick book, with as compelling as it was confusing. "The Calling of those who help us". A strange title, for sure, and it peaked his curiosity. And so, peaking inside, he found the solution to his problems. And the start to some new ones.
It had been a book on the summoning of demons and other creatures, on ways to make pacts with them, and even how they could be helpful to anypony. For some reason, Charcoal felt compelled to try some of the magical rituals described in the book. They would need him to perform magic to work, and he was very likely that he would simply screw them up. Perhaps it was his desperation, or the fact that it would turn out to be his calling, but either way, he tried it.

On the next day, Charcoal showed up in school with his cutie mark earned. And things changed. He suddenly seemed to have mastered the basic spells over night, while his behaviour had become irratic and random. One day he would be the most polite and friendly unicorn you ever had met, and the next he would yell at somepony just for coming close to him. Over time, his behaviour became closer to how it was before, but it still was a jarring experience for all who witnessed it. Questions were asked, of course, but Charcoal simply claimed to be a late bloomer, who had discovered that his special talent actually had been magic all along.

After this, Charcoal became more relaxed in his studies, and spend most of his time making friends and socialising. Still, he managed to do well in every test he was given, and he soon was given a chance to apply to Celestia's school for gifted unicorns. Of course, he managed to pass the theoretical part of the tests easily. Magical theory had become easy since he had learned how to actually do it. Of course, the practical part came as a surprise to him. It was a simple test, all he had to do was to become invisible for at least ten seconds. Easy enough for the kind of unicorns that were expected to join Celestia's school, it was expected that Charcoal would just try to cast a spell, and either fail or succeed.

No one expected him to summon a demon, bind him to his soul, and then use him to turn invisible. All without losing control. Needless to say, his application was accepted. Now studying at the greatest academy in all of Equestria, with full access to the Canterlot Archieves and all their books and tomes on magic and the occult, he quickly made more progress, becoming one of the most promissing students in the field of summoning and binding of powerful creatures. All without much effort on his part, of course.

Cutie Mark
A simple red Pentagram, with a small flame inside the middle.

+2 on all knowledge checks related to summoning. Charcoal is extremely talented in all matters related to the calling and binding of extradimensional creatures. He knows more about the needed rituals and circles than most other ponies.

Background
Sapphire was born to a unicorn couple that had been devout followers of Luna while she was imprisoned. Her parents had fallen in with the wrong crowd, however, and were taken when a small cult of Nightmare Moon was revealed to have infiltrated their group. Sapphire was raised by her aunt, Paige Turner the librarian in Canterlot, who was also a follower of Luna.

She had fallen in love with the story of Luna, and knew just how the story of Luna's release would end. She was so sure, that even as a little filly her cutie mark appeared, a shield and moon and she knew she would act as a defender of Luna. After she was proven correct, and Luna was restored, her aunt and Sapphire worked hard to give Luna the following she deserved.

But not all followings are good, and Sapphire was nearly taken by the same cult that had taken her parents and had infiltrated her followers as well. After that Sapphire knew that Luna would never be safe from Nightmare Moon or her cults, so learned to find the hidden cults in the dark. It's not her full time job, but another piece of her personal code to stop innocent ponies doing what they love from being harmed by bad ponies who try to masquerade among the good.

History is also a powerful teacher, and Sapphire doesn't wish it to repeat itself, so every night she goes out and frolics happily in the moonlight so Luna will see that ponies are happy under her watch as well. It may have earned her special treatment, as she was summoned and sent to Bridle at Luna's request to help with the situation there.

"Truth is the best thing, and trust is a thing we need from our friends."

Cutie Mark
Sapphire's cutie mark is a moon on a shield, indicating her devotion to defending Luna. It gives her a +2 on checks regarding Lunar knowledge (both the moon and the lunar pony).

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, I've been busy with college and it looks like I missed out on a lot of things. So just a few updates on my thoughts.

Not a whole lot has been altered about my character, save a small snippet of her personality and a cutie mark.

The whole cult idea, I wanted to do something different than your standard "We'll kill you all because we're evil" cult that's much too prevelant. My idea was that they were an offshoot of Luna's religion who had an Our God Right or Wrong mentality, and so supported her descent into Nightmare Moon (or the evil spirit which possessed her, whether they actually knew it or not).

Their focus was around the Ruin aspect of Nightmare Moon, namely that Eternal Night would bring about a slow, cold death. They don't actually have any particular issues with the world, but hay, God wants it so God's going to get it. They are Lawful Neutral after all.

After a thousand years though, confusion arose as to who exactly they were worshiping all those years which eventually resulted in their split, with the Nightmare Moon faction still searching for a way to bring about the apocalypse. So either this cult isn't mainstream, or I'll have to rethink the concept a little. It probably won't come up much in this adventure anyhow, its all just background flavor and I'm not going to worry about it.

Turns out I'll also need some connection hooks with some of you guys. I'm not sure how far it will get with the deadline a scant two days away, but I'm still willing to set up some connection hooks.

Moonlit Musings
In a clearing, just a few days after Luna returned to normal and resumed her duties, a mare with a coat the color of the midnight sky lays on the grass looking up towards the moon. She appears to be in deep thought.

Childhood
The Noir family were a strange group of ponies. They never actually did anything wrong, and not particularly unfriendly, but there was something very strange about them. They stayed up for most of the night, and slept during the day, and there was something very unsettling about the way they said "Good Night". It was as though they very sincerely did wish you a good night, but did not expect you to wake up again.

You All Meet on a Train
During the train ride to Bridle, there was a mare with a dark coat who almost always had a serious look to her. Possibly even military trained. She did not talk all that much, but after a lot of prodding on your part she opens up a little and seems very knowledgeable on all things night and dark related. She was most likely some guard or knight of Luna.

For some crazy reason I thought it was necessary to make Cordon's background into a wiki page (http://bridle.wikia.com/wiki/Cordon_Yamsfry) and with a bit of work I could see all of us having one. I guess I'm going to continue editing it as I go. I'm also liable to change this page too.

"The only mistake one can make is not to question things they would promise you is the truth."

Sojourner, so named for his misplacement in a far away land, is a Unicorn halfbreed, born to the parentage of Tipsy Trick and the Zebra Chieftainess Wild Winds.
Sojourner's father, a baker, just so happened to be the friend of a famous explorer, Compass Rose. Together, they went on many marvelous adventures. On one of these adventures (Deep into the Equestrian Jungles) Tipsy met Wild, and of that meeting came a child.
Growing up, Sojourner always felt isolated from his peers. Thanks to the strange ways of pony genetics, he ended up completely like his father, a unicorn in almost every way (save his eyes, which maintain a rather Zebraesque shape.) This by itself was enough to isolate him, but take being the son of the chieftainess, and unusually clumsy at that, and you had the perfect mixture for a disaster.
Eventually, his father and Compass Rose returned, finding Wild Winds with his child. Promptly, she left Sojourner with them and told Tipsy to take him, saying nothing more than 'He belongs with you.'
Moving to Manehattern, Sojourner found himself at the lowest point in his life. Listening to his father drone all day long, trying to get Sojourner into the 'family business' of pastry baking, Sojourner found himself spending more and more time at the mansion of Compass Rose. Listening to her stories of adventure enthralled the young unicorn, who would take her periods of napping to sneak peaks into her vast book collection.
One day, while searching through her library, he finally discovered his calling; through a combination of Tao philosophy, and the stories of grand adventure and peril, He decided the only way to make his life perfect was to put everything in balance. He would explore the world, learning everything he could, and learning how to balance both himself and others in the Eternal Balance, and make them whole and without pain.

Cutie Mark:

http://personaltao.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/yinyang.gif

Sojourner's cutie mark is the YinYang, a representation of his Spiritual awareness and desire to improve the lives of others.

Mechanical Benefits: +2 to concentration checks. +2 to knowledge checks involving Aligned creatures, and a +2 bonus to spellcraft checks when identifying spells with elemental descriptors.

Spell: Lesser Restoration. Sojourner can naturally insure a balance in other's, returning them to the state they are supposed to exist in, rather than the unbalanced, imperfect state instilled into them by physical force or spell.

Memories:

...I remember the first time I Went hunting on the plains. I had just barely grown old enough to participate, and despite the protests of many of my so called friends, I was given the role of honor as the hunt leader. I had never been happier than I was on that day, watching my plan come to fruition as we finished off the beast with a well placed spear....

...The smell of burning pastry will always mark the first time I tried to bake something. That oven will never be the same again. I still think the thing is burping up purple smoke. My father isn't happy with me about that one. though, he isn't happy with me about a lot of things...

...Compass. She was an amazing Filly. Her adventures from the tombs of the Egyptian kings to the ancient Citadel's of the far East kingdoms still enrapture me. I just hope I can replicate her deeds one of these days...

Personality:

Sojourner is generally very reserved and quiet, preferring to view things from an outside perspective, without bias or other input: he simply wishes to create and support his own worldview based on his experiences. If you didn't know him, he could almost seem cruelly disinterested, his voice sometimes seeming passionless and robotic, his descriptions void of emotional outburst and opinion.
He always does his best to be polite, everywhere from casual conversation to heated discussion, always looking to see from all points of view, rarely giving his own view on a subject unless coerced. Though sometimes he can seem lazy, he enjoys good, hard work when he can finally get around to actually doing something.
He can occasionally seem self centered, especially when connecting current conversation to some past memory or experience.

Those who know him see the mask removed: a shy but eager learner, looking to learn everything he can about the world and how it works. A jokester, with an often twisted sense of humor. A loyal ally, willing to stand up for his friends, whether protecting their physical forms or their beliefs. And an accepting pony, looking to understand, rather than challenge the way other's work.

His Story
The good Lord Emeraldcoat, one of the noble Unicorns of Canterlot, and a powerful wizard in his own right. Though lacking in the raw power of Twilight Sparkle, Emeraldcoat possessed a wide breadth of knowledge, and his special talent-as represented by his gear-shaped Cuite Mark-was innovation. He was a magical experimentor, finding new ways to combine the magical abilities natural to the Unicorns. Few ponies communicated on a regular basis with Emeraldcoat, because of how involved he was with his research.

Except for his assistant, Onyx Mane. She was almost as brilliant as him, though much more grounded in reality. The two had begun to form a small romance, and Emeraldcoat was very happy. Until an accident in the lab one day caused an explosion, killing Onyx.

Emeraldcoat was devastated. The only pony he truly felt was his equal was gone forever. Desperate, he threw himself into his research, trying to find something, anything that would bring Onyx back to him. Attempting increasingly complex formulae and calculations, Emeraldcoat went through failure after failure. Eventually, everypony just let him be. A mad unicorn in his ivory tower.

No one, not even Princess Celestia, thought he might succeed.

No one knows quite how he did it, except maybe Emeraldcoat himself-and if he does know, he isn't telling. But one thing is known for sure. Emeraldcoat only made it partway. Onyx didn't want to be brought back, and so Emeraldcoat could only give life to her hooves once more. Onyx's mind, what Emeraldcoat truly wanted to have again, was forever beyond his reach. In its place, something else entered Onyx's freshly reanimated body. Once again, no one is entirely positive what now controls Onyx's body, but whatever it was, it was powerful, and it was destructive.

The damage to Emeraldcoat's home was immense, and the dark pony he created rampaged for a time through Canterlot, before riding away towards the Zebra Plains. Emeraldcoat was swiftly captured by the royal guard, and brought before Princess Celestia for judgement. For pursuing magic beyond the bounds of pony law, and unleashing something from beyond the sphere of Equestria, Emeraldcoat's horn was broken, his magic stripped from him, until such a time as he could learn humility. He was sent back to his broken home, to think on the devastation his arrogance had wrought.

But Emeraldcoat did not learn. In his anger, he refused the offers of other ponies to heal his broken horn. Instead of returning to magic, Emeraldcoat continued his quest, through another medium. Celestia may have taken his magic, but she could never take his mind. So, Emeraldcoat began to experiment with scientific methods, applying his intellect to understanding the laws of the universe. His study into this new power is yet young, and though he has made much progress(even learning enough to rebuild his home even stronger than before), he is far, far away from being able to bring back his beloved Onyx Mane.

Even now, Emeraldcoat carries his broken horn in a vial around his neck, to remind him of his purpose, though he has begun experimenting with attatching various mechanical contraptions to the broken stump in order to control their operation with his mind. In the time since his fall, Lord Emeraldcoat has regained a vast amount of respect, especially amongst ponies of an academic inclination. Celestia has chosen him to join the team sent to Bridle, perhaps because of his unique perspective, and perhaps because she sees an opportunity for his redemption.

Emeraldcoat is reserved and proper, and not prone to exaggerated shows of emotion. He has earned a reputation of being aloof and unresponsive to overtures of friendship-a reputation rightfully earned. But Emeraldcoat greatly respects intellectual ability, and if somepony can prove themselves an able thinker, they will find that Emeraldcoat can be a valuable and insightful companion-if still ultimately one who is distant.

However, make no mistake. Emeraldcoat has no use for old traditions and outdated restrictions. He respects the law only because it is upheld by one who has shown him mercy in the past, and if Princess Celestia were not in power, it is unlikely Emeraldcoat would give two figs about the laws of Equestria. Emeraldcoat's only laws are those he discovers by observation. The laws by which reality operates are his code, and he is dedicated to understanding exactly what that means.

A Strange Pony
Onyx Mane was one of your friends growing up, and was always a rather inquisitive pony. Where others were satisfied knowing that something worked, Onyx wanted to know how it worked, wanted to understand what lay behind this world. Her becoming the Lord Emeraldcoat's research assistant was only natural. On occasion, you visited her in the Lord's castle, and while Emeraldcoat was always a gracious and proper host, you could never shake the feeling that there was something a little off about him. He was quite a strange pony.

A Strange Request
No one blamed Emeraldcoat for the accident. Investigation by the royal guard revealed the explosion was pure accident. Onyx had been mixing together spell agents, and some had spilled, triggering a chain reaction. No one blamed Emeraldcoat, except perhaps Emeraldcoat himself.
In any case, he summoned you to his castle, requesting that you gather some odd spell components for him. Alchemic items from the zebras of the plains, rare bugs from the Everfree Forest, and strangest of all, rare onyx stone from the mines protected by the griffons. He refuses to tell you why he needs these ingridients outright, only that they are for a new experiment. He promises to pay handsomly.

A New Path - Claimed by Bookend
Since the incident, Lord Emeraldcoat has slowly been making his way back into regular pony society. Despite the oddness of speaking to a unicorn with a broken horn, Emeraldcoat's mind is strong and very adept at figuring out new ideas. Perhaps you had a theory that needed working out, or needed him to analyze some new discovery, or you had heard of his work in scientific discoveries, and wished to hear these new ideas for yourself. In any case, Lord Emeraldcoat's raw intellect was plain to see, and it seems that he has begun to move past his previous obsession with bringing Onyx Mane back-without her body, the quest would be hopeless, anyway. Still, Lord Emeraldcoat seems particularly knowledgable in the mechanics of the pony body, and has some skill as a healer.

Female, but you might have other opportunities. In fact, I know you will in at least one case. Saying more than that would spoil some things.

For your questions in the IC thread:

Wow, I have no idea where all that came from. I usually have trouble with getting a paragraph out. I'll try to keep it shorter in the future.

I actually don't mind long, narrative posts, so long as it doesn't step on anyone else's hooves. In this case, it doesn't.

Also, do we have free reign* for our first post, just as a development of character?

Same thing, within reason. Interacting with your character's parents before you leave, for instance.

*side question: do ponies use that expression?

Eeyup. Sky chariots, for instance, often use reins — the pegasi driving could steer, but all their concentration is busy going as fast as they can. As I see it, anyway.

EDIT: Yes, so long as you end up at the west gate of the city by noon, go ahead :)

MB, I have just checked to be sure that Meteor's sheet is 100% up to date, and I believe it now is. The change to the mithril shirt has been incorporated and gold updated appropriately.

HELP REQUESTED
I've said this before, but maybe not loudly enough... :(

I still do not have a solid idea/gimmick for her cutie mark. The general idea behind her character is a sort of relentlessness (which I think her Brawny and Endurance feats reflect nicely), but I'm loathe to suggest tacking it onto Will saves in general, because for some weird reason, AD&D associates will with wisdom, and she's not a very clever pony (no relation!), not to mention her Flaw is a Will check and it would seem rather cheap to have the CM affect that, so I am inclined to rule out any kind of a flat Will bonus immediately.

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions? She's stubborn, somewhat mule-headed...And she's not the fastest flyer but yeah, Diving Charge...She literally will plow head-on into something interfering with her.

She is not a subtle rogue type, more like a thug. She's a skill-rogue focused mostly on the overlap skills between ranger and rogue (rather than being a trapfinder/lockpicker), and with a bunch of fighter-type feats.

Gonna go update the Wiki and then post.

Unstoppable? Tenacity? Something along those lines seems to fit. With some small bonus to resist external impediments. So no bonus to resisting your flaw, or save for half damage, but definitely for resisting the entangle spell or a bullrush.

(no relation!)
I don't know, considering the difference in tech level, it is entirely possible somewhere down the line.

Also, I am actually still here, and will try to get a wiki thing up for seismic at some point (assuming the world doesn't end).
P.S. Why does Charcoal Shadows Consulting have 2 locations, when Terraforming and Construction Ltd. lacks one entirely? :smalltongue:

Well, I have a few ideas here:

1. A +1 on saves vs. fear. Lackluster, but it fits the idea.
You think your undead army can scare me? Hah! I've seen worse in the company lavatory!

2. A +1 on all physical skills. Highly unlikely, but again, it fits.
I don't care how impossible it is!

3. Bonus to Intimidate after taking a fair amount of damage/below 0 HP. This is the idea that fits least, and yet is most likely to get approved.
Sweet Mother of Discord! That pony just took a volley of arrows and is still standing!

P.S. Why does Charcoal Shadows Consulting have 2 locations, when Terraforming and Construction Ltd. lacks one entirely? :smalltongue:

Because Wikia's image server is odd and won't accept the change I made to fix the numbering :smallannoyed: Charcoal Shadows Consulting is the 25 down toward the bottom of the map away from everyone else (off the beaten path, if you will); T&C Ltd. is the 25 on the river.

I'll allow it. Also having it serve as a bonus on Will versus fear makes sense: Meteor may not be a terribly wise pony, but she certainly is a brave one.

Folks, a bit of a family emergency has come up, my mother-in-law slipped and damaged a few disks, so instead of her visiting us, my hubby and I are going to go visit her.

I have absolutely no idea if I'll be around internet access. She has email, but it might be from a cell phone.

With any luck this won't consist of an interruption other than a couple of all-day-drives but I figured I should let you know just in case I suddenly drop off the map until around New Year's.

Just a heads up for Bones (great, now I can't see our DM without thinking of McCoy): Feel free to use Hope's parents in the Bridle side of things. Think I've given an idea of their personalities through wiki/posts, but here's a quick summary to be safe:

Polished Finish: A little quirky, slightly scatterbrained, but when things go wrong, he's someone you'd like to stand by as it happens.

Sparkling Gemstone: Very motherly and caring, has seen a lot of "it" before in terms of raising kids because she did most of the tricks in the book to manipulate parents, can be harsh or worrisome at times, but means well.

Awesome! I intend to, certainly, if something comes up requiring a gemsmith.

As a quick note, you'll have a bit of travel time while we wait for SW; Meteor can catch up pretty quickly, but I'm trying to avoid starting actual combat until your sixth is able to participate. I don't want to penalize anyone for real world troubles. Also this last week or so of the year is pretty busy for people, I'm sure.

I've also outlined several NPC's that you can feel free to use. Most notably, Bookend's family lives in the area while the whereabouts of Miss Docere Em Dee and The Griffon are unknown.Trailblaze: Adventurous mare who enjoys life, alleged former-thief, quick witted. Trailblaze is a wilderness guide in the town of Bridle.

Rock: Stubborn but gentle, unless you give him reason not to be. Lives with Breeze among the Painted Hoof tribe.

Breeze: Playful and competitive. She used to be an apprentice warrior, until the revalation that she had a talent for Speaking to the Earth put a kibosh on her plans of charging into battle - not that she'll admit it. Currently in apprenticeship to become a shamaness.

Miss Docere Em Dee: Shy and withdrawn, unless you're a patient or a danger to her patients. In either case, do not cross her.

The Griffon: No one really knows what he's like, except his former companions. About the only thing commonly known about him is that he's a griffon.

Holiday went pretty well, all things considered. Mom-2 was able to get up and hobble around a bit, and she was going to physical therapy Monday, Wednesday and today. They're trying that instead of surgery. If nothing else, it means when they do surgery the supporting muscles will be better developed and recovery should be easier.

I'm tossing a reply up for Meteor in BOTH the town and the party forums, but if Diamond Rain doesn't respond in a timely fashion (I don't see where she has posted in a while) it's just meant to be a quick stop by the Parthenon, so it shouldn't hold anything up.

Projected standard spell loadout. I'll let you know if I change it for a specific day.

0- Detect Magic x2, Create Water, Read Magic, Guidance
1st- Bless, Bless, Protection from Evil, Resurgence, (Domain) Protection from Evil
2nd- Close Wounds, Dark Way, Silence, (Domain) Zone of Truth
3rd- Prayer, Mass Lesser Vigor, Dispel Magic, (Domain) Rage

Typically, I cast Mass Lesser Vigor with DMM Persistent spell on the party at the beginning of every day.

For our marching order, I've come up with a few ideas:

B: Bookend
M: Meteor
So: Sojourner
SH: Shining Hope
DT: Dusty Tomes
SM: Sapphire Moonchaser

Note that all of these are capable of being flipped across the y-axis (switching left and right)

Option A: Never Split the Party

{table]B||M
SH|So|DT
|SM|
Don't you know, you never split the party.
Clerics in the back keep those fighters hale and hearty.
The wizard in the middle, where he can shed some light
And you never let that damn thief out of sight.

Gag aside, this seems like a good default set up. Bookend and Meteor are our strongest members, and Meteor has Trapfinding, meaning that she'll (hopefully) detect traps before we run into them. Hope can cast light at will, and has a strong ranged/buff/debuff capability. Sojourner is squishy enough that he should stay central. Sapphire is a decent combatant, and our primary source of cure spells, so she makes a good rear guard. I wasn't quite sure where to put Dusty, so I had him make everything symentrical.

Option B: Safety Spread
{table]||M||
|
B||So||DT
|
|SH||SM|
Spread out enough that smaller areas of effect won't kill us, but close enough that we can rush to aid if needed.

Option C: Frontal Focus
{table]B|M|DT
|SH|
|So|
|SM|
Based off of the T formation from the Black Isles games (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale). Works there, though it leaves the sides a little open. Note that here, Hope and Sojourner can switch places with no major change.

radmelon
2013-01-05, 01:19 AM
For where to put Dusty Tomes, it is bit of a puzzler because he can do a bit of anything. Where you put him looks good, close enough to the front lines for him to deal damage, but in a position to protect the squishier members of the party.

Also: hoofblades. You said you'd liked the way they were portrayed in my sketches...But those are strapped on. Are light hoofblades something someone would wear (particularly in hostile country) or are they subject to being drawn (i.e., requiring a move action) like a normal weapon? Shouldn't be that much of an issue because we should all have BAB of +1 or higher (draw as a free action combined with regular move) but just curious.

Also: As a _flying_ character, does the 'can't move through a square occupied by a friendly character while charging' rule apply to me when flying?

I'd also like to suggest numbering opponents and indicating (Letter 'C' maybe?) any which are in cover...

Proficiency in hoofblades is all about how to continue to walk while wearing them, so yes, assume you'd have them on unless you were ambushed while sleeping or something.

Also: As a _flying_ character, does the 'can't move through a square occupied by a friendly character while charging' rule apply to me when flying?

As far as I am concerned, they're cubes, not squares. A human-sized humanoid takes up 1x1x2 cubes :) Fly 10 feet up and over your opponent, you can pass him by (and take an AoO for your trouble). Fly 15 feet up and avoid Attacks of Opportunity. Got to think three-dimensionally here :-)

So that would be a yes, you can fly over an occupied square while charging. Just make sure you account for elevation in your movement.

I'd also like to suggest numbering opponents and indicating (Letter 'C' maybe?) any which are in cover...

Yep, will do that when I update the map. Until then, refer to them using the grid. At the moment, all of them have partial concealment, but not cover. As soon as they clear the bushes (as they will do shortly, being melee combatants), they won't have that.

Also, does my dark knowledge work against them? Normally it doesn't work against humanoids, but most campaigns also assume your humanoid in a world inhabited by humanoids. You'll have a result for your Local as well, actually, just not the terribly relevant one. And yes, you will be able to identify them at 15.

These are hobgoblins (Arcana), a warlike people bent on domination and destruction. They have not been seen in Equestria since before the first Hearth's Warming (Local).

The creature remains unidentified: whatever it is, you're almost certain it's not native to this plane.

So then, would my dark knowledge work against humanoids and magical beast not native to equestria?

Why, yes. Yes it would.

FORMATTING NOTE FOR EVERYONE:

If possible, could you have your descriptive text as the body of your IC posts, with any mechanics/dice rolls in spoilers? That'd be very kind. I should probably have said so at the beginning; it's been a while since I've run a forum game.

*Mumblegrumble* Some PbP forums let you use preview and record your rolls permanently so they can't be changed.

And then there's GITP, which takes out all of the dice info when you use Preview, having not actually posted.

Bones, I apologize for what a frickin' rules headache this post was. Most of the questionables in it will only come up this one time, I imagine (from above bonus, charge attack + overrun, AoO benefit from concealment). That'll teach me to not look up all the details of feats I think I understand well in advance and bounce them off the DM.

Forgot to mention, Meteor's AC against this Hob is at +1 (Total of 18) due to her focusing on him for Dodge.

EDIT: PS, Buuuuuuuuuut it's at -2 due to the charge. So a total of 16.

And with a 10 on the first Strength check and a 20 on the second, I foresee Meteor bouncing off this guy, hard...But at least probably not being knocked prone.

Yet another question:

There are a LOT of melee Feats which require Power Attack, but:

"You can’t add the bonus from Power Attack to the damage dealt with a light weapon (except with unarmed strikes or natural weapon attacks), even though the penalty on attack rolls still applies." (PHB 98)

So.

Basically.

As a light-weapon user, this is a feat which allows me to take a significant negative on my to hit roll, for no benefit whatsoever, except that having the ability to make myself miss more easily lets me get other feats which I can't access unless I take the feat which lets me make myself miss more easily.

That sounds...Kinda sucky.

Opinions? I know, the fact that I'm playing a brawler-rogue is kind of a pain in the butt in some ways. :(

Random aside to all... I'm sorry to be wondering this, but...

From the way our party looks, we could use an arcane caster. ( I don't think we actually have one, so to speak. I was almost certain we would, thats why I chose to be an archivist.) Though I was looking at becoming a LoreMaster, I've suddenly had inspiration looking at the Mystic Theurge.

Anyone have any qualms about me working toward Wizard and Mystic Theurge?

I'm sure there's a way we could work it in. Maybe These Otherworldly creatures bring a strange form of magic that requires intense study and mutterings rather than innate talent and power, power drawn from some other source than Gods or the self. Something Sojourner Becomes Very, very interested in.

Or, given another idea, Ancient magic found in long forgotten tombs.
Studying under a master magician.

Something like that. 0-0*

I have no problems with you working towards a class of your choice!

Meteor is a highly experimental character for me, I am really vague on where she's going, but I wanted to try to do a character who would emulate some of that sort of sudden impact move-through we saw RD pull off at the beginning of the changeling fight...And as a result I sort of have created a rather weird push/overrun/bullrush controller with the unfortunate side effect that her speed means she's going to frequently be zooming off in different directions.

I have no idea how I forgot that almost all 3.5 healing was touch spells. That, combined with Meteor's tendency to rely on height and distance for impact attacks and her horribly low hit point rolls is going to be a thing.

I should have invested in a belt of healing. She has the gold left over, but it somehow didn't occur to me until after combat started and Meteor was down to less than 1/3 health in a single hit.

I noticed that when I was putting the party together, but I ended up going with the six ponies that I thought would tell the best story together (I had to rely mostly on your guys selections for party companions; I thought all the submissions were great and if I could have run this campaign with 18 PCs I would have).

Red Hand of Doom is built along the standard D&D mindset, though: it expects your wizard to be an Evoker. The vast majority of the Batman things it expects can be done by Sojourner, Dusty Tomes, or even Sapphire Moonchaser. So either way you want to go, you'll eventually be fine, especially in a larger group here.

I'm sure there's a way we could work it in. Maybe These Otherworldly creatures bring a strange form of magic that requires intense study and mutterings rather than innate talent and power, power drawn from some other source than Gods or the self. Something Sojourner Becomes Very, very interested in.

If you want to go Mystic Theurge, I'll work with you to make it happen. However, I would probably suggest determining exactly what niche you're trying to fill with an arcane caster, and see if you can't find a prestige class that helps you do that instead. Otherwise it will be four levels before you have second-level arcane spells, and that's coming up on the end of the campaign as written (I intend to go past the end, but still). I would also suggest looking for druid scrolls to scribe to your book; there's some good overlap between Druid and Wizard that makes up for some of the things lacking on the Cleric list.

After the last two trip rolls I have an unpleasant feeling that she might be about to.

Give me an Intimidate check, will you? The hobgoblin you crashed in front of just saw you eat an arrow that would have killed him outright, land on and one-shot his buddy, and turn and start coming for him. And he doesn't have a melee weapon out. The withdraw action is starting to look excellent to him.

Saves Needed

I need a reflex save, DC 14, from Sapphire Moonchaser and Meteor.
I also need a will save, DC 16, from Bookend and Shining Hope.

Damage and Effects

Bookend is prone in K11.
Hobgoblin Archer hits Sojourner for 7 damage.
Sapphire and Meteor will take 10 damage from the breath this round and 5 damage next round from clinging breath; your reflex save halves that to 5 and 2, respectively.
Hobgoblin With A Chain deals 8 damage to Bookend.
Bookend will take 10 damage from Order's Wrath, and needs to make a will save or be dazed. A successful save will reduce this damage to 5.
Shining Hope will take 5 damage from Order's Wrath, and should make a will save to reduce that to 2.
I moved Dusty to R6 instead of P6; Shining Hope is already in P6. Nothing is in place to attack him, so no AoO worries, and you had the move action free.
Dusty heals Meteor for 20 points.

Shunka Warakin
2013-01-11, 07:57 PM
The chain-hob presses the attack as well, slamming his chain down on the prone Meteor before stepping slightly backward. The attack hurts, but it's nowhere near life-threatening: and in his fury, it may only make the librarian madder. It might also be making him see things: through his blood-maddened vision, he sees another hobgoblin shimmer into view between the trees, as if out of nowhere, holding a scroll in front of him with one hand and a strange symbol with the other.

Bookend, I think. I know, all the big ponies look alike. ;D

To be fair, he has both cover and concealment (one of the reasons he used an area-effect spell like Order's Wrath instead of, say, Searing Light), was Invisible until just this round, and has plenty of trees between Sojourner and him. I put him on the map mainly because Bookend can see him from where he is.

Speaking of which, your roll determines that the spell cast was indeed Order's Wrath (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/ordersWrath.htm), a 4th-level divine spell from the Law domain, without an elemental descriptor.

What is the chance that our prance is as fancy and as high of a very fancy prance that Mr. Fancy Prance would apply?

Not as chancy as the Fancy Prancy soup that Cordon Yamsfrey serves in Bridle. Of course, if he doesn't get some more onions, there's a chance his fancy soup will lose its Prance to some dapper dancer from Manehattan before Mr. Fancy Pants ever comes from Canterlot to taste it.

...

And I've gone ahead and put the spotlight on the map. 10-foot radius, right?

Hmmmmm.

Diving Charge is REALLY situational. (http://dndtools.eu/feats/races-of-the-wild--84/diving-charge--679/)

In any round that Meteor can end up with a 10' height advantage and at least 30' from her target, she can do some serious whammy. BUT she can't gain 10' altitude AND charge in the same round, because of how charge mechanics work. That means she either is reduced to doing it every other round (and using the intervening rounds to get a little height) or hope that her opponents are all downhill from her. ;D

Power Dive (http://dndtools.eu/feats/savage-species--47/power-dive--2211/) is interesting - it would grant her an overrun that couldn't be avoided (!) doing 1d6+4. However, if she flubs it (not like we've seen that happen!) and her opponent succeeds in a trip roll, she takes that damage herself.

Flyby Attack (http://dndtools.eu/feats/monster-manual-v35--5/flyby-attack--1153/) grants her a standard action (such as an overrun, or an attack for 1d6+3) usable at any point during a move...And can be part of a Dive (charge).

Neither of which are quite so high-impact as the +2d6 to a standard attack via Diving Charge...But they're probably more globally useable.

And then there's this (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Fly):

A creature that flies can make dive attacks. A dive attack works just like a charge, but the diving creature must move a minimum of 30 feet and descend at least 10 feet. It can make only claw or talon attacks, but these deal double damage. A creature can use the run action while flying, provided it flies in a straight line.

Flying skirmishers are weird characters, rules-wise. I'm learning a great deal here.

Under these circumstances, are light hoofblades equivalent to 'talons'?

If so, then a 'normal diving attack' is 1d6+3(x2) for Meteor, while a Diving Charge (Feat) is 3d6+3(x2)...Unless I'm putting the multiplier in the wrong place. Power Dive (Feat) seems to have a weird, flat, base damage+Strength...Perhaps without the (x2) modifier from diving, reflecting that you're trying to land on your target, not plow into the dirt face first. Flyby Attack is arguably the most flexible in that it permits the dive if you have altitude, looks like it can be used as a normal charge for 'skimming' flight, and can be used with an Overrun or Bull Rush.

I don't know if I want to ask to swap anything after this fight, I'm more muddling aloud about choices and trying to understand how these things work together (particularly such things as dive/charges as opposed to Diving Charges and Flyby Attack).

You and me both. Since nearly a third of the population of Equestria are pegasi, I have to adapt the campaign a great deal to account for "ZOMG even some of the commoners can fly." It's definitely a good concern for playtest.

Under these circumstances, are light hoofblades equivalent to 'talons'?

Why, yes. Yes they are. That would be the point of pegasi creating them. :smallcool: Clearly that's what I meant to do all along.

Like Mandible, I would suggest flyby attack. Like you've said, Diving charge is heavily situational, where flyby attack is kind of like Shot on the Run (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#shotOnTheRun) or Spring Attack (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#springAttack). Not as much damage but allows you much more leeway in combat as to what to do. My two cents.

If you ever hit a fly speed of 90, you might be interested in Adroit Flyby Attack. It's like flyby attack, but without provoking those pesky AoOs.
If you do want to diving charge, consider a chronocharm of the horizon walker, which lets you move at 1/2 your speed as a swift action 1/day, which should be enough to set up and preform a second diving charge after the first (also, it's movement doesn't AoO).
The Travel Devotion feat does some similar only it's full move, as a swift action 1/round for 10 rounds (1/day at a 1 minute duration). This would let you power dive 11 times in a row, 12 with chronocharm too. (Mental image of Meteor flying really fast in a circle, repeatedly hitting some poor sod.)
Ignore quicksilver boots, which force you to use land speed.
You might also want to consider a Medallion of Aerial Defense, which gives DR 10/magic vs. ranged attack when either you or the attacker is airborn.
All items mentioned are Magic item Compendium, Travel Devotion is Complete Champion, and Adroit Flyby Attack is Draconomicon.
Hope something here helps.

Yes, I factored in Meteor's damage reduction this time :-) It stopped the claw damage nearly cold, and helped with the bite. Damage to Meteor is 6 physical, 5 fire. Successful save means 5 damage last round and 2 this round.

Are you sure? Meteor has Evasion, so I believe on a successful save against anything that does half-damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage. (P.50 PHB)

Doesn't help the 6 physical of course!

This may have been passed by after last round; we switched to a new page fairly quickly.

Have not fully looked over the combat round yet. Will get to that first thing tomorrow morning.

Meteor's Evasion does take that damage from the breath weapon to nothing on a successful save; I forgot about your rogue levels. It does nothing about the damage from the bite, though your DR applies (and has already been applied) to the physical.

At 2nd level and higher, a rogue can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If she makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the rogue is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless rogue does not gain the benefit of evasion.

Emphasis mine: if it allows a save for half damage, you instead take none (like the breath weapon). If it didn't allow a save (like the fire damage from the bite), Evasion doesn't help.

BOOKEND: Nihilarian, Hope's Angel Buster is going to drop the Chain Hob outright. Did you want to shift to the cleric, or ginsu the unconscious chain hob?

Here is the FINAL ROUND combat results. You'll want to read it.

Shining Hope's Angel Buster knocks her target down to negative a lot (nonlethal), leaving it unconscious.
Bookend outright kills the cleric on attack three.
Hobgoblin Archer criticals, dealing 24 damage to Shining Hope
Meteor outright kills the dog-thing (attack three misses, but 13 is enough damage to kill it).
I took the liberty of having Sapphire and Dusty switch their melee attacks to the last hobgoblin, since neither would have provoked an AoO, you both had the attack rolls to hit it, and your combined damage was enough to kill it. That allows us to end the combat, and you two don't get penalized for Meteor putting down the creature earlier.

EVERYPONY gets 1200 XP for the combat (Two CR6s, Two CR4s, Six CR1s versus Six ECL6s). For the record, now that combat is over and your knowledge checks have had a chance to sink in, they were a hobgoblin spellscourge (MMV), hobgoblin cleric 6 of Tiamat, two draconic hell hounds, and six first-level hobgoblin fighters.

The following equipment is available on the bodies (including the unconscious ones):

Six suits of chainmail and four heavy steel shields (nonmagical).
Four masterwork longswords and two masterwork composite (+1 STR) longbows (nonmagical).
Eight Potions of Cure Light Wounds
Divine Scrolls of Spiritual Weapon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/spiritualWeapon.htm), Invisibility (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/invisibility.htm), and Summon Monster III (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/summonMonsterIII.htm).
One suit of +1 banded mail, which could resize to fit a pony because it's magical.
One +1 chain shirt.
One +1 spiked chain.
One Cloak of Resistance +1
One magical bracer, called a Shield Bracer, which persistantly duplicates the Shield (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/shield.htm) spell on whomever wears it so long as it is worn.

I am assuming you all have enough magic and skill between you to identify these things; none of them are truly obscure magical items.

Also, there is an abandoned farmhouse from which you can presume the second wave approached, which might bear exploring.

Let's get some of the easy stuff out of the way first:

Hope is down 26 hp in total, and has full charges on the belt of healing. I plan on using 2 charges to heal 3d8 on Hope, then use the last charge on Meteor for 2d8 of healing. She also has a +13 on Heal checks (+2 from Ability, +9 from ranks, +2 from the belt), for what it's worth.

As for items, here's my breakdown:
-Hope would benefit from the bracer or the cloak
-Sapphire and Sojourner split the scrolls between themselves
-Since Sapphire already has better armor than the banded mail, and is the only pony who can wear heavy armor, we leave it behind. Armor is heavy.
-We keep the chain, but nopony uses it due to lack of proficiency
-We leave the non-masterwork things behind, unless we need a shield for some reason.
-If anypony needs one of the masterwork weapons, take it.
-Potions get split so that everypony gets at least 1, Bookend and Meteor get 2

Finally, for the unconscious hobgoblins, does anyone have rope? I was thinking that we tie them up, bring them around, and Hope uses her Power of Friendship on them to make some friends. The tough part there is that, at the absolute minimum, it's a 10 day job, with 3 hours each day. At that assumes they never beat a DC 17 Will save.

Even if we don't try redeeming them, we should still tie them up.

I keep forgetting about vigor as well. Not going to change my post, I'll just play it as Bookend forgetting it too. About items:

Proficiency is only an issue if you're making attack rolls, really. Someone who doesn't attack (if we have anyone so inclined) might choose to use the armor despite the non-proficiency.

Everyone would benefit from the bracer or the cloak. They're the stars of the show, here.

I have a +1 Chain Shirt, but I wouldn't mind carrying a spare. It and the Spiked Chain eventually get sold, unless someone here wants a set of magical light armor.

Can a pony use a longbow with no penalty? Well, my long range attack is myself, so I don't really need it anyway. I also no use for longswords or any of the non-magic non-masterwork equipment.

If we give the scrolls to the Archivist, he can copy them into his spellbook and be used multiple times. Sapphire can take any Sojourner already has or doesn't want (sorry if it seems like hand me downs, but that's probably the best use for them)

I'm fine with taking 2 potions.

Okay, admittedly she doesn't USE a bow but I see no reason a non-offensive-caster telekinetic unicorn couldn't use a magical longbow for its bonus. Although I suppose the 3.5 AD&D version of ponies doesn't really assume that all unicorns are telekinetics?

Given the way that fight just went, Meteor would be extremely grateful to have a couple of healing potions for future use.

There are a couple of ways to think about the shield bracer:

Hand it off to a frontline melee fighter to make them tougher than they already are.
Hand it to the caster least able to employ normal armors/magical defenses.

I personally favor the latter, despite Meteor's fragility. We're in open country (and she'd argue this IC as well) and quite provably by that parting shot, cannot defend the casters/healers in the typical dungeoneering 'shield wall with casters behind it' mode. If any of our healers become hors(e) de combat, the domino effect could become very nasty, very quickly.

Now, about that other unpleasantness...

Bones, I'm going to assume that since you've awarded experience/loot the combat is over and Meteor will not find other living targets...If she does find anything I'll address that next post.

While you are in this case correct, I would caution against relying on that too much in this campaign.

The problem being she doesn't have paper other than her book, and I don't think Bookend would approve of tearing a page out. Also, no pen/pencil. The cookie comes from the Endless Rations.

You may be able to find what you need in the farmhouse. Alternately, once you've tied up the hobs, you can apologize and feed them a cookie in person. Er, in pony.

Everyone would benefit from the bracer or the cloak. They're the stars of the show, here.

And to think, the bracer wasn't in the original encounter, but I needed a quick +4 to AC for the Spellscourge for him to even have a chance...

I have a +1 Chain Shirt, but I wouldn't mind carrying a spare. It and the Spiked Chain eventually get sold, unless someone here wants a set of magical light armor.

On this note, I might suggest waiting to divvy the loot until you've checked the farmhouse, as there's a small cart behind it that could be used for carting around the other vendor trash. Magical armor sells for a good bit of funds you guys will eventually need.

Can a pony use a longbow with no penalty? Well, my long range attack is myself, so I don't really need it anyway. I also no use for longswords or any of the non-magic non-masterwork equipment.

Clarification: Can a non-unicorn pony use a longbow?

The short answer is no. The long answer is “Yes, but only by lying prone, holding the bow with both hooves and drawing it with your mouth. So, good things to have at a siege, not so much day-to-day.” The correct answer is “Pinkie Pie can, but not so much the rest of you normal ponies.”

If you haven't seen THIS (http://explosivegent.deviantart.com/art/Time-Off-Threading-the-Arrow-255927653) then go look now. YES, YOU MUST. Also the other two so far in the series (links in the description).

Thanks for sharing that! I hadn't seen it, and it is beautiful. Of course, when I think of a unicorn using a bow, I think of this.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/AnQJCOSCEAEXpra.jpg

Although I suppose the 3.5 AD&D version of ponies doesn't really assume that all unicorns are telekinetics?

Per the splat given, all unicorns can use Mage Hand in addition to their cutie mark ability. It's not fine manipulation, but it is basic telekinesis. I'd be fine with allowing a unicorn to use a weapon in lieu of using mage hand, but it would also mean she couldn't use her cutie mark spell while holding the weapon (the horn is occupied, as it were).

There are a couple of ways to think about the shield bracer:

Hand it off to a frontline melee fighter to make them tougher than they already are.
Hand it to the caster least able to employ normal armors/magical defenses.

The second option was what the bracer was designed for originally (I often play wizards). Remember that it is a shield bonus to AC, not an armor or deflection bonus, so it's a bonus most spellcasters wouldn't normally get. It's also something craftable by a level three wizard (and only because that's when you can take Craft Wondrous Item), so you could buy these in the future if you had the spare cash. They're 4000 gp by RAW (1st level spell x CL1 x 2000 for a permanent effect x2 for a minutes/level spell).

Bones, I'm going to assume that since you've awarded experience/loot the combat is over and Meteor will not find other living targets.

Here is the FINAL ROUND combat results. You'll want to read it.
The following equipment is available on the bodies (including the unconscious ones):

Six suits of chainmail and four heavy steel shields (nonmagical).
Four masterwork longswords and two masterwork composite (+1 STR) longbows (nonmagical).
Eight Potions of Cure Light Wounds
Divine Scrolls of Spiritual Weapon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/spiritualWeapon.htm), Invisibility (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/invisibility.htm), and Summon Monster III (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/summonMonsterIII.htm).
One suit of +1 banded mail, which could resize to fit a pony because it's magical.
One +1 chain shirt.
One +1 spiked chain.
One Cloak of Resistance +1
One magical bracer, called a Shield Bracer, which persistently duplicates the Shield (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/shield.htm) spell on whomever wears it so long as it is worn.

I am assuming you all have enough magic and skill between you to identify these things; none of them are truly obscure magical items.

Also, there is an abandoned farmhouse from which you can presume the second wave approached, which might bear exploring.

So, in terms of the all the awesome stuff we just found...

I'm mostly looking at the Scrolls and the +1 chain shirt. Heck, if the +1 Banded mail can fit itself, so can the shirt!
I already have a cloak of resistance (+2, actually) So I don't need that. Of everyone for the bracer of shielding, I think Shining would be best, if we're going to give it to a caster. Sapphire and Sojourner can wear armor, after all. (Sojourner not quite as well, but that's besides the point.)
And if you want scrolls, Mial, I can scribe some for you. =3 So, lemme have the scrolls to copy into my prayer book... Maybe? I might just take a single potion of healing, too.

We are all going to end up healed by the end of the day, so healing is unnecessary.

Let's get everyone together into the farmhouse for the night and discover the wagon so we can haul the good along with us.

As for the unconscious hobgoblins.... huh... I'll write something up IC.

Okay, so now I know no Crossbow with my cutie mark spell at the same time. Well, not that that will be an issue anytime soon... I hope. 0-0*

List of magic Items I wish to lay claim to keep for Sojourner:
+1 Chain Shirt
Scroll of Spiritual Weapon
Scroll of Invisibility
Scroll of Summon Monster III
1 Potion of Cure Light wounds

The only item I'm interested in would be the cloak, the scrolls can go to you for sure. I'd grab a potion of course.

Otherwise I'm a-ok with the suggested loot splits.

RESULTS FOR MIAL
This one actually comes easily to you: Tiamat is one of the gods of the Dragons — the especially greedy, warlike ones who are usually asleep. Why these hobgoblin creatures from myth are walking around praising her name, you have no idea. She shares similar ideals to the Nightmare: tyranny and strength, not the chaos of Discord. However, she did not take sides in the dispute between Nightmare Moon and Celestia so many years ago. When someone asked a dragon why, she said "Ponies are none of Tiamat's business, just as dragons are none of Celestia's."

Also, I'm going to be on a plane for the next several hours on my way to London, so I may be out of communication for a little while :-)

This is just a sort of a layout sketch/color experiment and a brief rough-out of some armor ideas.

Oh my GOD ponies are a technicolor nightmare as far as trying to do anything like composition!

I'm not going to do anything like send it to Equestria Daily and have them post it as part of a Drawfriend as the header image where thousands of people will see it and a few will start writing fanfic based on it. It's cool, I used the linkage to the Wiki for the time being for colors. Unfortunately with this layout and the idea of five ponies coming through the gate, somebody had to be at the back, and I really wanted the contrast between Hope and Bookend to be the centerpiece, so...
Although I may end up swapping Sojourner or Dusty for Sapphire (although I like how the rough-out for her post worked) just because their colors are very similar.

Group pictures are HARD to do even without technicolor considerations.

Eeeyargh, well...EQD wouldn't touch me with a ten-foot calip-rod.

I'm one of THOSE pony artists, y'see. Which is why I post links to images instead of straight to my tumblr account, for fear that somebody will click the first page on a day I'm being saucy and their eyeballs will melt out of their sockets and their soul will be irrevocably lost because of my wicked ways. <_<

But if you really want to find me, well, my tumblr name is rather obvious. There just isn't a lot of space there.

In seriousness, I've seen them post images that, while they themselves are SFW, come from more questionable sources.

1. Wait for the finished drawing
2. Ask if you want me to

Okay. I am safely in London, so at some point (after I have slept) I shall answer interrogation questions. As it stands, I have not slept since I posted yesterday, cannot sleep until at least 8 local if I would like any chance of avoiding jetlag, need a shower like Applejack after a mudstorm, and can barely remember my own name, much less two Hobgoblins and what they know.

But that picture rocks so far, and I'm glad to be a part of it, even in the smallest way.

And I've seen them, fairly recently, post images that may or may not be considered "saucy," just behind a link instead of embedded. So that's something, I think.

A query: GFawkes, is it important for you to be able to use your Power of Friendship special ability?

Theoboldi

Say, can I take 10 on both a knowledge (arcana) and a knowledge (the planes) to autoidentify the stuff in the vial as hellfire. Both of those would give me a check of 27, which is higher than THEChanger rolled. Or was it the alchemy check that identified it? I just want to know before my next post.

Also that picture is already looking pretty nice. So nice in fact, that I can forgive you for the fact that Charcoal will never be included in any of those group shots. I am not in the least bit jealous of the people in the adventurer group.

Not important, but it would be nice. I realize that it may not be practical to do, due to time required, but having a hobgoblin with a friendly attitude towards us is:
1. Something Hope would do In Character
2. Useful in the long run. It's one less enemy to fight, and one more ally we can count on

As it stands, Uth-Larr is currently hostile to you and Kerak is unfriendly. As you'll soon find out, you're not going to have too much time to Power of Friendship him, but assuming you can come back and do that at any time, you might try placing them in jail and PoFing over time. Just a thought.

Theoboldi: I totally missed the question the first time! My apologies. In answer: Yes, you can, although it was absolutely the alchemy check that I went off. In any event, you can come to the same conclusion: this is some sort of sticky residue from the breath weapon of a Hell Hound — normally, they don't leave such residue, but here it is.

Of course, our friends in the Adventurers thread have just experienced this firsthand...

Jail is, in fact, an option. There's one back in Bridle, and it's not unlikely that you'd find one in Drellin's Ferry as well.

Celestia's Death Glare To The Moon is not an option, as Her Solar Majesty is busy biting her hooves waiting for Twilight Sparkle to throw a Renaissance Faire to save the Crystal Empire. Likewise, the Elements of Harmony are not an option, as they're busy throwing said Renaissance Faire.

Luna is also busy with things that will become apparent later in the campaign. If asked, she would also remind you that she sent a cleric with you, and through Sapphire Moonchaser is her will made manifest.

You may be able to ask for help from these or other allies as things become progressively more dire, but nobody wants the DMPCs to come steal the show, I don't think.

Approximately how far are we from Drellin's Ferry? We might be able to spare a few days there for Shining Hope to brainwash befriend them, and so we can rest, recover, buy some new shinies, and get some information on what lies ahead. We should also report to Lion Guard. Dusty should be able to use Whispering Wind (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/whisperingWind.htm) to do so. It's not reliable, though.

Alright, I think I'm developing a plan for the rest of the day, assuming no more encounters, random or planned.

1. We tie up the hobgoblins, and have them walk with us. I don't trust them if we leave them in the cart with all the gear. We can have a rope connected to either Bookend or Meteor to stop them from running off.
2. Head for Drellin's Ferry.
3. Upon arrival, tell the guard that the hobgoblins should be placed in the jail and given decent care (only high quality loincloths, masterwork gruel, etc.) This is so that PoF works on them.
4. Keep using the Fluttershy method of brainwashing on them. I'll also see if I can find out more about this horde, such as where they are and how many there are, roughly.
5. Buy/Sell any stuff we need/don't need.
6. Save Equestria
