A figure in shimmering etherium armour stands upon the field of battle, longsword at the ready.

"Knave! Scoundrel! Villain! Come forth, and meet your reckoning with honor!"

A blinding flash of fire briefly lights up the field, and a figure in a crimson robe steps out, his eyes glittering with malevolent glee.
(Picture for those reading who may not know him.)
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm296/kroogle1/Redghostguy-1.png

Heheheheh. It feels good to be back in action, and with new powers to boot. Those Rakdos sure are a hoot! Ah right, you wanted a duel? Then a duel you will get! Ahahahahaha!

He raises his staff, now emblazoned with the sigil of the Rakdos Cult, and steps forward toward the challenger.

Let's start this off, shall we?

The red-clad warlock raises his staff, and a sheet of flame roars to life behind him. A horned imp leaps out of the fire, cackling madly as it wreathes itself in flame and launches itself at the enemy.

(Heh, I almost want to import Dr. McCarthy, if only because he's completely inappropriate for this setting. :smalltongue:)

[roll0]

Seeing the move the other Planeswalker makes, the knight slashes his blade across his arm, drawing the blood necessary to dispel the foul creature.

"Urgh!"

The wound heals quickly, but already much blood has been used up.

"Foul strength or not, you will not find victory this day."

(Pay the life to dodge Vexing Devil, because yuck. Play a Plains and end turn.)

[roll0]

The bolt flares across the Knight's armor, checking his assault and causing some quiet, pained grunting. This is not to say he stops, or loses any meaningful resolve.

"So am I."

With that, a third sphere of white light flares into existence, as what appears to be a small village begins mobilizing its militia. The flag-bearer orders an attack as the first platoon charges in, followed by a bona fide legion of armed peasants fighting for what they believe in: Public safety.

(Play a Plains, cast Militia's Pride for one mana because of the Banneret's ability, swing with the Banneret and pay an additional mana to throw a token onto the battlefield and into the fight. End turn.)

"A losing battle? My goals are not so lofty as you might believe; I work toward what is achievable, not an impossible fantasy. Entropy may be universal, but it is slow unless hastened, and the damage it does can be repaired far more quickly."

No fifth sphere of light ignites, but some flicker of light does form; There is a rift growing, where more will no doubt come from in time.

Another attack comes, this one stronger than the last, and another battalion appears in a flash of light.

(Pay 3 mana to suspend Benalish Commander for one turn. Use Elspeth's ability again to make another token. Attack with 2 tokens. End turn.)

Red Spectre snarls. You've won this round, but I'll be back! Don't rest easy now!
With that, he steps into the fire and vanishes, the flames dying down behind him.

(I have to surrender now. Don't have any good options available. Not sure if this loss was due to bad luck, bad play, or flaws in the deck. Drew too many of my big creatures in the opening hand, without enough land to play them. Might need to work on the mana curve a bit. I might have done better if I had waited to use Dreadbore on Elspeth, but eh. Good game.)

BladeofObliviom
2012-12-12, 09:14 PM
(Yikes, yeah, that's not much fun. I can tell you that saving the Dreadbore for Elspeth wouldn't have done much; Leaving that Banneret with Militia's Pride on the field would just mean I basically got a free hasted token every turn instead of an unhasted one.

I haven't looked at your mana curve, but lots of high-mana stuff in hand without mana is usually a bad sign. Good game anyway, though. If you'd like to try a different deck, I'm still up for a game.)

EDIT: (Oh, and I honestly had a pretty good starting hand. That probably didn't help.)

Blue Ghost
2012-12-12, 10:15 PM
(I wasn't paying much attention to the mana curve when I built the deck, but it seemed fine when I counted it. Probably just bad luck. But I adjusted it a bit toward the low end anyway, just in case. And sure, I can go for another match. I don't have another deck at the moment, so I'll stick with this one. I'm up for facing whichever deck you choose.)

EDIT: Here's my updated version of the deck. Feel free to comment.

"You've disturbed my meditation."

And everything in a decent radius, for that matter, if all of those yellow eyes in the trees are any indication. In particular, there's one reptilian creature that almost looks humanoid in frame despite being covered in fine scales, aiming a bow.

"You are a fool to bargain yourself away to such entities. I will allow you to keep this one, to see your folly."

Even as the mana continues to expand around him, a toadlike thing emerges from the marshy ground, and the snakes seem to grow, fed by the strength of land and sea alike. The flying snake and the two "Normal" ones strike viciously, attempting to tear into their foe.

Red Spectre screams as the reptiles swarm savagely over him. Gah! Curse you to hell, Raaaaakdos!
And in a flash of fire, he is gone.

(Welp, I lost again. Had a slightly better hand that time, though still not good enough. Any suggestions for this deck?)

BladeofObliviom
2012-12-14, 02:09 PM
((Yeah, sorry about that. That was an absurdly good run for this deck; Exactly as many lands as I needed at all times, perfect mana curve with the acceleration, and no real removal on the opposite side. So, erm, yeah.

Probably not the best indication of deck strength. :smalltongue:

Maybe you just had bad luck, but I also noticed that you weren't casting much outside of Vexing Devils. Have you considered some kind of draw acceleration? Black has access to things like Sign in Blood, after all.))

Blue Ghost
2012-12-15, 04:45 PM
Yeah, could just be bad luck. I'll give Sign in Blood a try though. And I found Incinerate and Flame Slash; gonna be running those to replace my current burn spells. And maybe Lightning Bolt? It's strong, but the flavor doesn't exactly match...

Also, new deck, completely untested. I got the idea for it long before I heard of Azorius, and am kind of sad that Azorius stole the flavor (but also thankful that they provided a lot of cards for the theme). Was going to run a bit of black in it, but there aren't enough on-theme black cards to justify running a third color. Look it over and see if there are any major flaws? And I'd be up for a match to test it too.

By the way, is there anyone else active in the PbP right now? Seems you and I are the only ones here.

I don't see anything too obvious. I haven't clearly looked over the mana curve yet, but I don't see any glaring issues with that either. 22 lands might be a bit low given a relatively high number of large drops, and Counterspell's double blue cost might be occasionally tough to manage.

As for players on PbP, people usually just drop in for a game or two every once in a while, then stop playing a while. Meanwhile, I'm the solemn spirit of the thread, always ready for a game when no others are around for it. :smalltongue:

Anyway, in the interest of giving you something to test decently, I decided to throw out a deck that I haven't used in a while but takes a bit of time to build up properly. That way, nobody gets bowled over before the game properly starts.

Thanks much.

Wandering through the Aether, you find yourself in an imposing marble structure, resembling the courthouse of New Prahv. A stern-faced man stares coldly at you from the judge's bench. Or not.

A foul miasma spreads from his form, as the fungus begins spreading relentlessly despite whatever objections the Azorius Senate may have. Some Golgari Superweapon? Or worse?

The judge bangs his gavel. We have seen firsthand evidence of your guilt. If you have nothing to say in your defense, we shall have to detain you.

[roll0]

We have two witnesses against you, and we shall see that you are proven guilty beyond a doubt. Justice will be served.
The two lawkeepers stand ready to arrest the man at the first sign of movement.

If you think that you can take down the entire Azorius court by yourself, you are sorely mistaken. Accept your sentence.
One of the lawkeepers stifles one of the thallids, while the soulsworn jury project a force field to stop the second.
(At the beginning of combat step, tap the grafted thallid with Gideon's Lawkeeper. Then block the other thallid with Soulsworn Jury. You have priority at this point.)

EDIT: I have to go soon, so I'll assume you pass priority and finish my response. If you had something else to do, please correct me.

I have had enough of your insolence. No more deliberation is necessary; we have reached a decision. Guilty!
The judge bangs his gavel, and the man is suddenly enveloped in a brilliant white light and vanishes.
(During the declare blockers step, cast Condemn on Thelon. The thallid blocked is back at 1/1, and is destroyed in battle.)

I'm going to be on vacation for the next few days, so posting will be infrequent.

BladeofObliviom

"You're underestimating my strength. I simply grow and grow, while your forces can only dwindle in response."

Then he gets hit by a bright light and recoils in pain before vanishing. The fungus doesn't stop, though.

(Cast consume Strength Twice, each one killing one of your Lawbringers and giving +2/+2 to my blocked Thallid. This should mean that your field is clear of creatures, unless I'm mistaken.

You probably still condemn Thelon, but I end my turn regardless.)

Blue Ghost

(Actually, in that case, I will not condemn Thelon yet.)

The judge's expression remains impassive as he watches the overgrown fungi shred his lawkeepers.

[roll0]

We have reached our verdict. Guilty of all charges. Sentence, annihilation!
The gavel pounds down once more, and the courtroom is flooded with a blinding flash of light that incinerates the intruder and his fungi.

On cue, a bearded man clad in the azure robes of an Azorius lawyer steps to the stand, unfurls a scroll, and begins reading.

Ladies and gentlemen of the court, today you have seen for yourselves the heinous acts of the defendant. You have openly heard this man mock our court system, a crime punishable by indefinite detention under Azorius Code XVI, section 10.9. This alone would be reason to condemn the defendant, as you no doubt would agree. Furthermore...

The elocutor looks up briefly and glances at the defiled signet, hastily jots down some notes, and continues his speech as if nothing had happened.

Furthermore, the defendant is accused of interguild conspiracy, a serious breach of the Guildpact, article XXVII. This is a grave charge, and deserving of serious deliberation. I believe that the court will find the evidence more than sufficient to substantiate this charge. Take Exhibit A, a clear example of Golgari necromantic technology, which you have seen used against the Azorius court; as well as Exhibit B, an instance of grafting magic known to be used by the Simic Combine. If this is not sufficient evidence of the accused's guilt...

A vedalken guildmage is summoned to nullify any further threats, while the lawyer continues his elocution.

This man has clearly obtained technology from the Simic and Golgari guilds illegally. While the question one may ask is how, it is not the relevant question here. The question is, to what end? And the answer to that is clear. He has orchestrated an attack on the Azorius Senate itself, an act of Class I terrorism. I trust you, ladies and gentlemen of the court, that you will not let this heinous crime go unpunished.

Therefore, ladies and gentlemen of the court, we humbly request that you find the accused guilty of all charges. Thank you.

The judge slams his gavel. Guilty as charged! We hereby sentence to life in detention, followed by eternal imprisonment. And with that, a brilliant light flashes through the courtroom, completely obliterating all the remaining fungus.

(Good game. Wow, I wasn't actually expecting to win that one. I guess I got lucky with drawing the Elocutors fairly early. Any suggestions for this deck? Any win conditions beside Elocutors that would be on theme, or ways to make pulling this off easier?)

BladeofObliviom

((Well, I'll start by saying that you really nailed the Flavor of the Azorius. Seriously, that was pretty darned entertaining. :smallwink:

On mechanical concerns, I'm not sure how I can help you. I'm better at identifying errors in decks that lose, you see, since it's clear exactly what happened. For example, I'm seeing that I need to add something that lets me bounce back from board wipers a little bit better, because that Supreme Verdict was painful. >.>))
