This is a general question about missing your target with ranged attacks and spells but what happens when you miss someone with a Disintegrate Spell....
Does 10ft of the wall behind them turn to ash?
How do you lot play it?

The only time I remember a missed disintegration ray was when the sorcerer in question literally missed a castle gate. Twice! Natural 1s in the heat of battle, of course.
Anyway, we laughed so much we didn't even bother to think about how that happened. I guess a miss could be more like the spell fizzling. I'm thinking the rules are like that because it's a lot easier to deal with, so any reason you come up with is fine.

I do, but not in a way that penalizes the players. For example, they were battling a beholder in a giant library. When the beholder missed with he disintegrate ray, a shelf of books would be annihilated. None of the treasure or the McGuffin would be zapped, just environmental things for flavor. I think it helps to make the world seem more real - they aren't doing things in a vacuum.

The ray could just disintegrate air, who knows?

By RAW at least nothing happens, just as with missed projectiles.

A nat 1 on a disintegrate spell means that there was a fly or other insect, might even be a leaf or debris, in the way of your disintegrate beam.

I roll a d1000 and look up the result on a crit failure table. Might even put in a wild magic surge if the setting is FR.

If there is someone in the way or behind and they don't have precise shot, they make a secondary attack roll against that person (if they fail a ref save).
Otherwise, follow the line to it's end and if there is anything in the way - KAZAP - 10ft of it's missing. Other rule is that something like a fly or stray leaf got in the way (depending on area).

Looks like somebody read A Spell for Chameleon!

I've started a forest fire with enough natural ones on bad scorching rays in the same battle. Those poor goblins and equally poor catfolk.

Not as nice as the big hardcover collection of the first three books I've got on my bookshelf :smallcool:
Xanth would be a cool D&D setting though. Lots of absurd high magic and monsters. Like an E6 tippyverse.
