Hey, I'm just getting my hands dirty learning the magic item creation rules and I've hit a math snag.

I'm trying to create a neck slot item that can Detect Evil for a Harmonious Knight from Champions of Valor and my budget is 2,000 GP

So, at first I thought, "Awesome! A command word version of this item is just 1800 GP!" Then I noticed that the example given by the SRD for this category, Cape of the Mountebank (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#capeoftheMountebank), can only be used once per day and has a GP cost of 10,080. I crunch the numbers to see if my math matched up (Spell Level 4 x CL 9 x 1800) and ended up with 64800! That couldnt be right, so I considered the charges per day (5 divided by the number of charges per day 1 = 5. 5 then divides 64800 for... 12960!?

What am I missing?

It seems they calculated for Caster Level 7, the minimum that Fly can be cast at, but then didn't include the price of increasing the caster level.

That makes a whole lot more sense!

So that means I can have the item for 1800 GP, but only with 5 uses per day.

Thanks!
