So I've come across the Redeemer archetype, and am intrigued by it, but have a question:

Merciful Smite: Does it still only work on evil creatures, or can it be used on anyone? I ask as the Redeemer lacks the detect evil ability of the Paladin. Thanks.

As far as I can tell, the lack of Detect Evil doesn't change Smite Evil's purpose and function beyond what the Redeemer entry states.

They did the same thing with the Holy Gun archetype, replacing "Detect Evil" with "Shoot People."

All Merciful Smite really adds is the ability to do Nonlethal damage with a Lethal weapon withOUT taking the -4 To-hit penalty.
There is then a rider says that certain types of Evil you can NOT do Nonlethal too.

So while you CAN use the Nonlethal Option on Non-evil creatures, you will NOT get any of the typical Smite bonuses.
