View Full Version : Diamond Mind for Wizards

Martial Wizard allows Wizards to swap out Scribe Scroll for a Fighter bonus feat, usually Improved Initiative. However, I noticed that Martial Study from Tome of Battle is also a fighter bonus feat.

Could this be used to give Wizards Action Before Thought/Mind Over Body/Moment of Perfect Mind at level 1? If so, is it worth it? Being able to essentially autopass one save of a given type per encounter at higher levels seems like a very valuable ability. But then again, initiative is pretty good too.

They still need to have the prerequisite initiator level, which is equal to 1/2 their level if they only take levels in Wizard. This means that at level 1, they can only take level 1 maneuvers. IIRC, the level one save-replacer from Diamond Mind is the Will save one, which already is good for Wizards, so they don't really need it.

But yes, they can get them.

But not at level 1. You correctly point out that their initiator level is 1/2 their wizard level (see page 39, ToB), but forgot that fractions are rounded down (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/theBasics.htm#roundingFractions). As initiator level 0, a wizard (or any non-initiator) cannot select martial study as a feat at level 1.

Either way, I think Imp. Initiative would be better. Going first ,and potentially disabling some enemies or ending the fight outright, is a lot more important than passing one save.

I think the formula for IL is 1/2 character lv, rounded down, minimum one. Else, there would be no way some of the npcs in the book can take martial study feats at 1st lv (e.g.: that half-orc monk in the shadow sun ninja orc example).

So yes, any PC should be able to take martial study feat at 1st lv to gain access to a 1st lv maneuver.

The example characters in ToB are absolutely screwed up all over the place. Don't take any rules advice from them.

Because that would be the first example ever of an NPC in a rulebook that didn't qualify for its class!

It's not, there are plenty of other examples. Regardless, there is no rule within ToB that IL is rounded down (minimum 1), and errata doesn't help. Houserules, here we come!

EDIT: And.... swordsaged. Shadow Sun Ninja'd.
