Anima: A lone wolf, with faded green highlights and dark auburn eyes.

Motivation: In exploring the reasons why people strive do I find my own.

Background:
A man with four daughters is poor indeed,
A man with a fifth daughter born will curse his seed.
I was born the fifth daughter of the second wife,
I came into the world undeserving of life.

My beautiful mother, with her cold breast,
Gave me up to fortune's test.
The salty spray, the sandy shore,
Where I would not fret her fear no more.

There were once songbirds and turtle eggs,
Ostrich feathers and frog legs,
But there were no stirrings of this or that,
For on the shore there were many rats.

I wonder what I would have became.
Beautiful? Plain? Pretty and vain?
Alas, not. For the rats had acquired a taste
For a child's soft and flushed face.

I didn't die. Perhaps I should.
My lot is veils and hoods.
But I'm free to sail the sea
For there are mothers who are ugly as me.

A dark hand embraces my cheek.
A white smile shines on my face.
I stared back, not shy or meek,
As we walked back into the cold waste.

Claiming Teal for Scribbler's speech color.

Crunch: (includes appearance and personality description)
Name: the Scribbler, commonly goes by "Iris".
Exalt Type and Caste: Full Moon Lunar.
Anima: Long silver-white threads of light twist and coil around her in an intricate maze.
Spirit form: Box Jellyfish
Tell: Crystalline tendrils in her long blue-black hair.

Appearance:
The small figure is swathed in a long black cloak, face shadowed by a deep hood. For those who dare to look beneath the hood, her face is still and pale as a drowned corpse, inlaid with flowing lines of moonsilver, and rimmed and shielded by corrugated folds of shimmering mother-of-pearl. Her long night-dark hair ripples like seaweed in a current, even absent any breeze, and transparent tendrils shimmer and coil between the darker strands.

By the standards of most of humanity, Scribbler is short and fragile-looking, stunted by her birth in a shadowland. Her skin is deathly pale, her hair as black as the night sky. Her eyes are gray, the color of the dull light on the sea before a storm. She customarily wears her waist-length hair long and loose; even in moments of relaxation, those who can see past the veil of Luna will see long transparent tendrils waving gently amid the dark strands. In a moment of true relaxation, if she removed her armor and outer clothing, one might see the tangled, thread-like red-purple scars that cover her entire body.

Of course, it has been long since she could relax, since she didn't feel death's chill breath on her heels. She employs magic to conceal her true nature from mortal eyes, and travels almost always in her armored warform. Her kin might see it as an insult, but they are few and far between, in these Western reaches.
[the following describes Scribbler in war form with her standard Gift charms, the Wings and Armored Hide mutations active from Hybrid Body Rearrangement]
Opalescent mother-of-pearl, scribbled with lines of moonsilver, armors her from head to toe. It is thicker over vital organs, forming shimmering plates in all the pale hues of seafoam, but even the sharp planes of her face are made jewel-like by the nacre. Her coat is ten thousand overlapping fish-scales of silver and crystal.
She is crowned with a near-transparent hood of pale azure. From beneath it flows a mane of tendrils, crystal threaded with silver, longer than Scribbler is tall. They reach out around her in all directions, tasting the shifting currents of the air.
When stealth is not a concern - but is it ever so? - she prefers to swim those currents, rather than confine herself to the ground. The bubbles of gas beneath her skin make her body as light as a feather, and just as she once flew through the deep waters on jets of her own making, she now soars on the wind with as much grace as any bird.

Disguise of the New Face:
In her most common disguise, Scribbler appears as a lean but well-muscled woman a few years older than her true age, with strikingly beautiful features, blue-tinted bronzed skin, large turquoise eyes and long blue hair. Her hair appears to be arranged in many knee-length braids, each one beaded with silver and steel, drawn together at the nape of her neck by a wide ivory clip. Her hands appear to be covered with black leather gloves, elongated to leave space for long fingernails. She wears a hooded, knee-length black coat, buttoned from the waist up, over gray trousers, and steel-capped black leather boots.
If her anima flares, it appears first as a blue-and-silver shimmer like light on water, developing into a swirling whirlpool of water and spray.
She introduces herself as "Anemone", an outcaste Water Aspect.

Personality:
Scribbler generally comes across as calm, reserved and quietly intense, but she has a ready smile and a quick wit once she opens up a little. She absorbs knowledge like a sponge when she chooses, and has a seemingly boundless font of curiosity and enthusiasm for exploring new facets of the world.

She delights in complicated mental games and wordplay, and would leap at the chance to contest with an equally intelligent opponent; such adversaries have been in short supply over the past few years. She also finds personal satisfaction and calm in the martial arts, and practices katas as part of her regular morning and evening routine.

In emergencies, she tends to become hyper-focused, able to react quickly to new developments while remaining deadly calm. It takes a lot to get her to panic. In general, she tries to strike a balance between overeagerness and excessive caution - when she gets it wrong, it tends to be on the side of caution most of the time, with the occasional spectacular eruption of recklessness when she gets frustrated.

Scribbler does have a temper, but it's mostly well controlled - although challenges, or threats to things she cares about, can spark it to wildfire. Grimness and grief sometimes shadow her face, but as with anger, she mostly keeps those emotions and their origins private.

Themes: freedom, discovery, survival, uncompromising determination, renewal, atonement, redemption, the beauty of living things, dreams, madness, poison, trickery, treachery.

Motivation: To lift the Web of Shadows.

This suit of lamellar armor is crafted from many overlapping fish-scales of clouded crystal and glittering moonsilver, designed to be flexible enough to accommodate a shapeshifter's ever-changing form. The salt of the ocean does not cling to it; a Lunar wearing it might transform into a siaka and swim from Skullstone to the Neck, and step forth from the waves with her armor still shimmering like moonlight on water.

In her war form, a delicate hood of transparent azure-tinted skin billows around Scribbler's head. From it flows a mane of crystal tendrils, gently waving in the air around her. Her pallid skin becomes azure-tinted as well, and the flesh beneath almost transparent, easily blending into her surroundings.
Her war form is not large or imposing; it looks almost fragile, even ethereal. She glides through wind or water with an ineffable grace, every movement languidly smooth and yet deceptively swift.

Background:
Summary:
Scribbler grew up on the island of Seagate near the edge of Skullstone. Her family was lower-class, although not desperately poor; her parents told her they'd once been better off, before they fell afoul of a corrupt Dark Judge, but she doesn't remember better times.

The family member she was closest to, as a child, was her great-grandmother, who was known as Grandmother Dolphin. Dolphin had been born outside the Web of Shadows, before coming to Skullstone as an adult, and told Scribbler stories about the world outside the shifting maze of shadowlands. Her most prized possession was a book from her youth, a naturalist's journal showing the plants and animals she had catalogued in her travels across the West. Most of the drawings were only sketches, but some were inked - and even faded, they opened a window to a world of color and beauty that Scribbler had never imagined. Dolphin died when Scribbler was nine, but she inherited the book.

Like most children in Skullstone, Scribbler learned to read and write, but she showed a rare enthusiasm for her studies; her intelligence was noted by her teachers, and she was apprenticed as a clerk. (This was unusual among people of her social class; "Scribbler" was a nickname given half in derision and half in affection.)

That life ended when the Silver Prince returned, Seagate attempted to rebel against him, and he responded by sinking the city. Scribbler's parents and baby sister drowned that day; she managed to swim to safety with her little brother Hawthorn. The two of them managed to scratch out a subsistence existence in the shadowland that now covered mostly-submerged Seagate for the next few years.

Scribbler Exalted after she dived into a jellyfish bloom to rescue her little brother. The Exaltation wasn't immediate; she managed to throw the youngster to safety, and then swim to shore despite the agony of the jellyfish tangled around her. On reaching the shore, she promptly passed out, and spent the next few days lying unconscious in a high fever. She experienced strange dreams and hallucinations during that time - some of which were meaningful and some of which were not - culminating in a vision of the Walker at the Crossroads, and a choice she had to make.

When she woke up, the fever had broken, and she knew that she was Exalted as a Steward. She believed that Luna had tasked her with lifting the Web of Shadows, and restoring this part of Creation to life and beauty. Unfortunately for her, the local Deathlord had other plans.

The Silver Prince became aware of Scribbler's Exaltation and sent one of his Abyssals to bring her in, along with a No Moon necromancer who he'd accepted into his service when she came to Onyx seeking knowledge (and her Abyssal mate). They explained all the benefits of working for the Silver Prince, especially contrasted with the consequences of not working for the Silver Prince: it was an offer she really couldn't refuse.

Scribbler accepted with rather bad grace, and thus began her service to the Silver Prince. She received her tattoos from the No Moon who had recruited her, who also taught her the history of the world and the Silver Pact, albeit with a somewhat unusual slant. She guided Scribbler to the Full Moon caste, shaping her into a warrior for Skullstone, although the young Lunar was and is rather more subtle than the stereotype of the Frenzied. Scribbler was not happy about working for the Deathlord - she still blamed him for the deaths of her family, and something deep inside her abhorred the nature of Skullstone - but of course she kept that absolutely quiet.

Eventually he started sending her on missions further afield, beyond the Web of Shadows. That was a mistake. Seeing true Creation for the first time, the islands vibrant with life beneath the light of sun and moon - it recalled memories of her Exaltation, of the path she'd chosen, of the bright dream that Luna had promised her could be real. And it made the contrast with the Prince's "utopia" shockingly, viscerally clear, no longer something that could be ignored.

Perhaps that in itself would not have been enough; perhaps the anguish and shame would have faded after a time. But on one of these missions, she encountered the renegade deathknight Fallen Wolf of the Cutting Seas. They spoke, and he encouraged her to leave the Prince's service; eventually, he helped her fake her death and flee. She didn't want to leave her brother behind in Onyx, but Fallen Wolf persuaded her that it would be impossible to get him out, as the Silver Prince would certainly be watching for any hint of betrayal; that decision was her Sacrifice for sorcery.

In the month or so since making her escape, she's been wandering the West, trying to stay well clear of Skullstone's agents, practicing the Sacred Hunt, and looking for allies. She's learned a spell to disguise herself, and uses it assiduously, but she's still afraid of the Silver Prince learning that she's alive.

Moment of Exaltation:
Part One: Death in the Water
The wind was brisk over the dark ocean, tatters of grey clouds shadowing the silvered sky. A storm was coming in, she could taste it in the air.

The children were diving for sea urchins below. The creatures sheltered in cracks in the broken houses, where only small hands could reach. It was always dangerous, of course: the water was murky, and who knew when a promising crack might instead turn out to hold a coneshell or something worse? On a day like today, though, the waves were the greater danger; already the swell was picking up, and a wave could easily smash a small body against crumbling masonry. They needed every scrap of food, though. Winter was coming.

Then a cry went up, and the ruins below were suddenly alive with children, scrambling out of the suddenly-deadly sea. She saw blood on some of them; their haste had left no time for caution. Scribbler saw the telltale shimmer a moment later; it was easier to see when you knew what you were looking for, but it looked like a big bloom. She ran her eyes over the youngsters, counting... and came up one short.

Her gaze went to the small dark head in the water, struggling with the waves. Hawthorn. He was far too young for this, in the time before the Silver Prince came he would have been in school - but now, in drowned Seagate, there was little left of childhood. And he wanted, as he'd always wanted, to help her.

He wasn't screaming yet, just doggedly trying to reach the higher levels and safety. But then he did scream, as the shimmer in the water reached him.

She leapt from the high wall. This was going to hurt, but all it would take was will and strength. The will to keep her focus, her clarity of mind, through the pain. The strength to hold her head above the water - to keep breathing - to keep her heart beating.

She hit the water in a dive and jackknifed around instantly, coming up next to Hawthorn. She grasped him - light as a feather in her arms, too light and small this close to winter - and hurled him toward safety. She saw him grab hold of a post and pull himself out; it looked like only one of the jellyfish had scored him, and only along his leg.

She had a moment to feel triumph, and then the pain began. For every action has an equal and opposite reaction, and her throw had pushed her away from the higher ground, into the oncoming bloom. The venom streaked through her like lightning, like fire tangling along every nerve.

Breathe. Swim. Stroke for the ruins. Agony ripping through her flesh - how many of the tendrils were wrapped around her? Too many. But if she could get to shore, the elixir was in the bag she'd left on the wall, and through blurred and fading sight she could see one of the older boys racing to bring it down.

Swim. Breathe. Force yourself to keep moving, by sheer strength of will overcoming the body's long voiceless scream. She pulled herself up onto the shore, mind still impossibly clear, although her muscles jerked and shuddered in reaction to the shattering pain. Don't try to tear the transparent tendrils away with your hands, the elixir will render them inert.

They poured the elixir over her body, over the tangled and knotted scarlet patterns of the stings, and she passed out.

Part Two: the Silver Path
Poison flowed like ice and fire in the currents of her blood, fueling a fever that carried her mind far away. She dreamed strange visions, hallucinations of worlds that never could have been.

Afterward, she could not remember much of that time. But at the ending, the visions took on a sharp clarity.

The Road of the Full Moon
She stood on a shore of white sand, looking out across the ocean. The full moon shone bright in the sky, and laid a silver trail across the waves. The air was full of strange fragrances, sweet and salt and wild - not at all the fetid, rotting smell that she associated with the shadow-misted sea.

She stepped out onto the path, half-expecting it to hold her weight, and splashed to her knees in the water. It felt cool and fresh, without the clinging slime she had expected; ruffles of seafoam and moonlight caressed her skin.

She laughed and ran forward, ducking her head underwater and feeling the currents play with her hair. Moonlight was above her, below her, around her, and on the seabed grew strange corals like flowers, blooming in colors she could never have imagined from the decades-old inked drawings she had seen.

What do you wish to be, child?

A memory, a dream; an old woman with tears in her eyes as she tried to explain to a little girl. They were joy in motion, so beautiful; they filled the sea with their song.

Moonlight suffused her, and her feet lengthened and flattened into flippers, her legs fusing, her arms becoming fins. The dolphin whistled at the moon as she leapt above the ocean and took off along the silver path, threading her way between the sea and sky.

The Road of the Changing Moon
In time the silver path ended. The dolphin slowed, and became a girl again, floating at the interface of water and air. She could no longer see the land, but she was not afraid. The full moon had splintered in two, it seemed; half shone above and half below, perfectly mirrored.

The moon above might be too high for her to leap. But below - what depths were there that she could not plumb? She somersaulted in the water, for the sheer joy of it, and then dived.

Long she swam downward, following the moon's radiance. It shifted its shape as she swam, waxing and waning. But there was always some light there, a silver lamp to guide her on.

She had expected the water to become cold, dark, heavy. But instead it grew lighter, foamier - almost like air. As she thought that, she looked back up - and with a wrenching shift of perspective found herself hanging far above a broad dark expanse, strangely folded and contoured. She hung for a moment in the air, and then fell.

What do you wish to see, child?

Feathers white as moonlight sprouted from her arms, as the bones lengthened into great wings. The owl soared across the dark lands, seeing the silver tracery of streams and the tapestry of the forest cloaking the familiar contours of the land, drinking in the myriad murmurs of the living night.

Was it a promise, or merely a requiem? A vision of redemption, or only of mourning? The owl saw, and asked, but where were her answers?

The Road of the Dark Moon
Had she been a dolphin, an owl? Surely those had only been fever-dreams. This was real, this stony and dusty road. There was no moon in the empty night sky.

She was thirsty, but there was no water on this path, winding up into the mountains. She'd known hills, in the lands around the city of Seagate, but never anything like the terrible peaks that rose before her.

She was tired, but she could not rest. She had been walking for a long time - how long, she couldn't remember. Always alone, though.

Was there another, walking beside her? She glanced to the side, but even that felt dangerous. No point looking back, everyone had said. Live with what you've been given. Accept, and walk on.

Ahead she saw only dust and ashes and desolation. There was no silver lamp to guide her through the dark. But she remembered the dolphin and the owl, and the scent of night-blooming flowers. So she turned, and looked back - do not forget - and saw the fragile carpet of flowers and moss and ferns where she had walked, spreading out to cover the mountainside, fed by silvery trickles of clear water welling up from her footprints.

What is past is past, and there is no going back. But springtime follows winter. There can be flowers again, amid the dust.

She breathed in the scent of springtime and rain, and turned again to the upward-winding road.

The Crossroads
She found herself at a crossroads, where three roads met. A figure stood at the center, cloaked and veiled in black. Silver light was in her hands.

"It is time to make a choice," the figure said, in a voice of silver chimes and moonlit silence.

Three roads there were. Along one, dust and darkness. Along a second, peace and the dreams of the past. Along the third...

"Where does the third road go?"

"Through the mountains."

"And that is the only way back to the country of flowers?"

"Some other may accept the charge, if you do not. But some - one or many - must walk that path."

She considered. "I am not the owl, you know. I want knowledge, not only questions. Understanding is more than seeing."

The figure's face was hidden, but it seemed they smiled. "I know. And yet all knowledge arose from insight once, and every answer has its question."

"Nor am I the dolphin."

"No. You do not have their joy. But a dying world needs survivors as much or more than celebrants."

"Are you real, or just mirroring my own thoughts back to me?"

Laughter like moonlight on seafoam. "This is a fever-dream, child!"

"And who said it could not be more than one thing at a... oh! I see."

Her mind was clearing, now. She could feel wakefulness beckoning, like light beginning to shine through a window at dawn. Or... was that wakefulness, or death?

Dream or reality, life or death, she knew her answer. And perhaps her spirit was part dolphin after all, for she laughed as she stepped toward the cloaked figure, toward the path through the mountains, and reached out her hands to the silver light.

The cloaked figure opened their hands, and said,
"THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE."

The long ghostly tendrils swirled around her as the crown of silver light settled on her brow. She woke to the pale dawn of the shadowland, laughing in indignant delight, with new life and power flooding through her and a cloak of indigo shadow and silver radiance flaring around her like a banner. The scars from the jellyfish tendrils criss-crossed her body in tangled lines of red and violet, but the pain was entirely gone.

Trials of Sorcery:
Humility was too easy. How often had she dug in the muck and slime in the years since the Prince came, feeling for anything that might be edible? How often had she begged aid from someone who'd been more lucky with their gathering? How often had she made little sacrifices to gods or spirits who she abhorred, to beg the life of a sick child or a change in the weather? Pride was a luxury, and luxuries had no place in her world.

Fear of pain, and the perils of the sea, and death beyond death, had lain like a shadow over her life. But she had defied all those fears when she leapt from a crumbling wall into the shimmering waves, to save a beloved child's life.

Her Journey took her across the sea to Skullstone, a hundred miles and a world away from the island where she'd grown up. Nothing had prepared her for the people she met there, the skills she learned, the wonders and horrors that she saw.

Tutelage was given to her freely, by the No Moon who initiated her into the Silver Pact even as she argued the Deathlord's case. Some of that knowledge seemed familiar, lessons understood when she watched the clouds and measured the tides, but more was new and strange.

Sacrifice, as always, came last and hardest. On the day when her family was destroyed, she'd snatched up her little brother and swum with him, ignoring the screams of her baby sister, because she knew she could only save one. Years later, she'd jumped into a jellyfish bloom to save him, without hesitation. When she fought and killed in a Deathlord's name, she'd thought of him, safe and happy in his apprenticeship - or so she gathered, from the letters he sent her - and felt it was worth the trade.
Until the day that it wasn't, anymore. And on that day, she left him behind.

Notes on spirit form:
There are some creatures that are made for survival. Creatures that can live in the cracks of a world that holds them in contempt, and thrive in conditions that others would find intolerable. The cockroach. The rat. The mosquito. The jellyfish.

Life and nourishment once came from the ocean, an abundance of fish and kelp, but in the shadow of Skullstone, the waters are dark and poisoned. Jellyfish still swim in the dead seas, ghostly lights beneath the waves, and dark masses of rotting seaweed choke the inlets. In the ruins of a fallen city, a clever scavenger can find food enough to survive, perhaps - but never more. Those who survived the Silver Prince's wrath can only dream of the black ships that might carry them to a better life beyond the grave. Life is short and brutal, a too-brief interlude in which to win back the Prince's favor.

The jellyfish drifts unseen through the ocean, hiding in plain sight. Crystal beauty in the water, bringing gifts of pain and death. These traits, too, she shares. But first and foremost, when the coral is bleached and the seas become barren, the jellyfish adapts, and survives.

So did she.

Notes on names:
Her true name is Scribbler. It speaks to the child she was, when she drew patterns in the sand and read an ancient journal and dreamed of a world beyond the Web of Shadows. It speaks to the history written in her skin, the tangled map carved into her flesh by the venom that opened her soul to the Exaltation. It speaks to the weapons she uses to fight her battles now, long crystal tendrils bearing deadly gifts of moonsilver and poison. It is not a name she shares with others, and all those who knew it are most likely dead now.

Her deed name was given, in the tradition of the Silver Pact, when she received her tattoos: Burning Thorns of the Bright Sea. She left it behind, along with everything else, when she abandoned Skullstone.

Now, she prefers to use simple nicknames, taken from the bright flowers that do not grow beneath the Web of Shadows.

Ganyard the Wavebreaker
Name: Ganyard, or Derek Jeffreys
Exalt Type and Caste: Infernal, Slayer
Anima: A sword blazing with green flame scythes through the air boiling away waves that crash towards Ganyard.
Motivation: To Turn His Infernal Monstrosity Towards Heroism
Urge: Cecylian Urge, Unite The Navies Of The West Beneath My Banner
Background:
"What do you mean you've never heard of the Wavebreaker? The greatest marine to sail the seas? Slayer of a thousand Lintha? What do live under a hermit crab's shell? I'm a damn legend!"
Ganyard was not always the boisterous bruiser he paints himself. In fact his Adjudicator often argues that Ganyard hasn't really earned any recognition. Ganyard thinks the Eristrufa isn't giving him enough credit. After all he did slay a small pack of Lintha. Granted, he did it only with the coaxing of the Eristrufa. And those rumors that the pack were already sickly... Well, we'll just ignore that.

In truth Ganyard is little more than a fisherman's son, Derek Jeffreys by name, fresh from his Exaltation and quaking in his boots. When the Lintha came to trade with (raid) his family he never objected. He took whatever life handed him with a simple willingness to go with the flow, to float on the tide and the currents.

All that changed when he began to hear stories of the great golden heroes reborn. People who can change the world by the their great and magnificent will. Reborn by gods they say, striving to save the world and remake it in their exceptional image. Derek dreamed of what it might be like to be such a hero. And while the Golden Sun had no use for Derek's dreams, a great green glow heard him calling.

Now one dead Lintha raiding party later Derek is desperate to keep the new-found voices in his head in check, placating them by going after what he hopes is the worst of the worst.
"Oh... Wow. They're uh... All dead."
"Which was our goal was it not?"
"...Of course! All fear the great and terrible Wavebreaker!"

EDIT FOR GREAT JUSTICE:
Also, he has found his theme song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UHr43GihXM)

Mmph. I still can't decide how to spend my last two background points. If I had a Yasai Crystal, could I start with an elemental inside it? Alternatively, how many dots of Mentor or Ally would Fallen Wolf of the Cutting Seas (the ex-Solar who the Silver Prince turned into an Abyssal) be worth?

AgentIndy

The crystal would be fine.

Yeah, that should be fine.

Ifni
2012-12-29, 12:42 AM
The crystal would be fine.

Thanks  The spirit I'd like to have inside it, initially, is a Sandpiper (they're described briefly on p.87 of Oadenol's Codex), the gist is that they're small birdlike earth elementals that do not fly, responsible for shaping the shore to their liking; they are also known for their quick travel and compassionate desire to heal the injured.

They don't have a detailed statblock in the Rolls of Glorious Divinity but it mentions they have the Affinity Earth Control charm and can create sand (five pounds per minute) at no mote cost, that the compassionate ones know the Touch of Grace charm (which provides healing), and that generally they favor charms for stealth, perception and quick travel. Would this be okay? If so I can write up a list of Charms they might have. Alternatively, she could have a baiji in there (minor dolphin-god) - they're fully statted, but a bit more powerful/significant (and don't have the nifty "make sand" ability).

In either case they'd only be around for a month or so before she has to recruit a new one; they're both fairly compassionate ocean-beings who'd probably be okay with temporarily helping a Lunar who's on the Silver Prince's bad side, but they have their own affairs to attend to as well.

Oh, and disguise roll for my spell, augmented with the First Intelligence Excellency (she would have rested afterward, as the spell lasts forever until dispelled):

[roll0] (5 Int + 5 Excellency + 3 Larceny)

Base difficulty is 2 to set Appearance to 5 (but otherwise same general body type, gender, and Western racial background). So that's six threshold successes; people need to roll 8+ successes on Perception+Awareness to realize that something is wrong about her appearance (since their threshold successes on a standard-difficulty roll needs to beat her threshold successes, i.e. they need at least 7 threshold successes).

Ifni

AgentIndy, would you prefer me to have a somewhat-stronger-than-usual sandpiper (Essence 3 rather than 2), or just an ordinary sandpiper? My crystal can hold an E3 being but it's a question of whether she found one. Just asking because it matters for how many motes I can spend on Touch of Grace (it's capped by the lower of Compassion and Essence).

Also, from Sierra's description of their injuries, is it possible for me to translate that into an estimate of levels of bashing/lethal damage, at all? Touch of Grace has a clause that if you can't heal damage completely, you can't heal it at all.

Appearance
Derek was a sailor's son. He had the lean muscle of one who spent most of their time in the water, a sleek almost slender physique. His brown hair had faded to a dirty blonde from his time in the sun. Never a fighter, at the most he's carry a knife to crack open the odd clam.

When Ganyard Wavebreaker emerged from the Chrysalis Grotesque he had none of the color that had graced Derek's hair or skin. His body is now almost uniformly grey, the subtle color of fog creeping through a seaside village. The only color that still graces his form is a fiery green tint behind his eyes.

His build remained lean, but where once Derek's tanned skin held muscles that seemed often at ease, Ganyard's body is taut cord. When he strains his muscles ripple beneath his skin, the Eristrufa visible, its tentacles writhing.

The simple fisherman's knife is long gone as well. In its place, Ganyard now carries a bundle across his back. A repurposed and expanded case originally meant for a pool cue, the sheathe holds Luna's Leftovers. Ganyard is unsure of the blade's origins, and shudders any time he's forced to use the name given the word by his predecessor. He hopes to find the sword's true name in his free time.

When unsheathed the blade whips about in a frenzy, tasting the air or sea for blood. At times it seems to slither around the defenses of those it faces stretching like the tentacles of the Eristrufa that brought Ganyard his new shape. When at rest it settles into the shape of a long talon.
Mutation Bank Thirty Points Allowed

I'm still working on a full statblock for my sandpiper, but from looking at the E2-3 elementals it looked like they typically have ~10 charms, not counting Excellencies. Here's my proposed list:

Affinity Earth Control
Touch Of Grace (heal a wounded target)
Dematerialize
Measure The Wind
Elemental Rejuvenation (Earth, requires a natural beach)
Portal (between beaches she has visited)
Hurry Home
Sense Domain (the beach)
Landscape Hide (beaches and their vegetation)
Camouflage (as Huraka, but only on beaches or other sandy environments)

+ probably Excellencies for Awareness, Stealth and Survival

Affinity Earth Control and Touch of Grace are explicitly mentioned in the description, Dematerialize / Measure the Wind / Elemental Rejuvenation are basic spirit/elemental powers from Core, and then I picked the other five Charms based on the guidelines that sandpiper charms focus on quick travel, perception and stealth.

Does that work for you, AgentIndy? If you have any suggested changes I'll be happy to make them.

And OJ, I deliberately gave you the tendril wrapping around the ankle (which is pure stunt, the tendrils aren't mechanically involved in the clinch at all) so you could show off your poison charm :smallwink: (and maybe with an eye to that become-immune-to-any-poison-you've-survived charm in the future...)

Oi, OJ! I was aiming to throw him into the water, as noted in my post :smalltongue: Presumably there is water on at least one side of this ship, even if we're still in port? (yes, I have to be close enough, but we've been walking around the deck and you can edit unspecified details into the scene with a stunt :smallwink:) The point is to dunk him, not to hurt him. Alright, editing and posting then.

Two things: (1) I'm going to wait to respond, to see if OJ wishes to edit to reflect the fact that it's mostly water down there, or if he wants to write it as Ganyard hitting a gangway.
EDIT: Curses! Sidereal'ed by your Infernal sneakiness! Very good then :smallwink:

(2) AgentIndy, how do you want to handle stunt awards? The way I've usually seen it done on these forums is the player rolls 3 dice in each post where they take an action, and then the next time the GM posts he/she tells them the stunt award. It matters because stunts are both a nice bonus and the primary way of regaining Essence and Willpower in combat, and the combat system's balanced around the assumption that they're pretty common (1-die stunt is pretty much any description more elaborate than "The character swings their sword", using the environment gets a 2-die stunt, 3-die stunts are really spectacular moves).

AgentIndy
2013-01-03, 10:51 PM
I will let you make 1 and 2 die stunts on your own call, just don't abuse the honor system. You can petition for a three star stunt, you just need to make me think,"Woah, what a badass."

Ifni
2013-01-03, 11:43 PM
Failed Stamina+Resistance vs the poison, so I'm at a -3 penalty for this action and take potentially 1 die of lethal damage. The damage doesn't matter this time, as I can reflexively heal one level of lethal damage every action, but for the record:

Ifni

I've been talking with OJ about that (as I was basically just following his lead). Basically trying to see if she can tell anything about the sword's maker, where/when it was forged, any names or stories associated with it in Silver Pact lore, since it's a moonsilver blade.

(Basically aiming for the equivalent of, "This, Gandalf, was Glamdring, Foe-hammer that the king of Gondolin once wore" :smallwink:)

OJ hasn't defined the sword's history yet. If 7 sux is enough to pick up this kind of information, would you like to invent something, or would you like me to? I'm fine either way.

Here is proposed origin story for Ganyard's sword, posted for ST approval. This deliberately leaves open everything that's happened to the sword since the Balorian Crusade, it's just the story of its forging. Scribbler won't know all this, I imagine, but it gives us a baseline to work from and discover.

Many know the tale of the Great Contagion, and the invasion of the Fair Folk, and their defeat by the Scarlet Empress. Far fewer know the stories, and the desperate heroism, of the battles fought at the edge of the world.

It is the Stewards' duty to range the boundaries of Creation, and be the shield against what lies beyond. In better days we walked all Creation freely, but even exiled to the Wyld-tainted rim, even when all else is forgotten - still, we remember what we were Exalted to protect.

This is not the sword of Yasammez. She preferred other weapons.

She was old when the gates of the world were broken, and the nightmares flooded in, although not as old as she felt. In the chaos of the Usurpation, fighting to protect one she loved more than life, she had opened her mind to the memories, and the madness. When she fled at last to the Wyld, in failure that she had not expected to survive, she carried within her the deadly skill of one who had survived the first war. And her paranoia. And her rage.

And the knowledge, that there would always be another battle; that the war never ends.

From the edge of the Wyld she watched the long decline. She walked the boundaries of Pure Chaos and came more and more rarely to Creation, and when she did it was to rage at her younger kin and the accursed Dragon-Blooded, for what the world was becoming under their stewardship.

Sometimes, she returned with knowledge, with strange prophecies, cast up on the shore of that eternal sea. But she did not stay; her madness and her fury was a burning thing, and with what human compassion remained to her, she did not wish to burden any place with it. Only once did she come back for a longer time, to speak her name and her deeds, and seal her half-chimera self in a cage of moonsilver.

To the raksha, she was a legend of power and terror and beauty and torment, drawing them like moths to the fire. Old and cold in her anima of shadowed spines, she might descend and destroy a freehold in moments - or she might play goddess-teacher-storyteller, bestowing blessings, recalling the days when Luna herself came as ambassador to the courts of the Wyld.

Their name for her was Lady Porcupine. To those few Lunars who knew her, and grieved for Yasammez - to them, she was Full Moon's Madness, for only when the full moon drew the Wyld tides to wash across Creation did she walk beneath the stars of the Loom.

And then a thousand years after the downfall of her world, she came to warn her brethren, of the armies gathering in the courts of Chaos, beyond the shallows of the infinite sea.

When the Contagion came, she waited. When the Crusade marched, she waited. And then she left her stony redoubt in the Middlemarches for the last time, and walked alone out of the Wyld, through the emptiness the Crusade had left in its wake, summoning her armies and her allies to her as she went.

And then Yasammez fought again in Creation, one final time, against the fall of night.

Her tomb was the crystal bones of countless raksha. Many advised to let her lie, fearing what horrors might sleep unquiet there. But there was one who remembered Yasammez, and had heard her last request, and at his order they cast aside the shards of crystal, and brought her forth.

They took her blood and bones and flesh, charged with all the power and dying hatred of the ancient Lunar, and with them forged artifacts to carry on the war. Last and least, they took the moonsilver tattoos that had encompassed her madness and despair and hope and fury and love - and these they shaped into a sword, to carry forth through time the tales of her deeds.

It is not the sword of Yasammez, although it is slender and deadly sharp as the shadow-needles of her anima. As she walked unseen in the night and the light alike, a predator beyond anything even the Incarnae might have foreseen (although perhaps Luna knew, and smiled even as she wept), so her heart's blade is made to slip fast and sure past an enemy's defenses. Most of all, though, it was made to protect what must be protected; what can never be forgotten, even when all else is lost.

It has been called many names. The Porcupine's Needle, among those few raksha who still remember the terror in the night. Madness' Legacy, among some older Lunars who honor what she did, while resolving not to forget what she was. To the one who forged it, its name will never be anything but Yasammez.

But the name written in its core, the name that reveals itself slyly through all its myriad forms, is Eternal War. And the title bestowed on it, on the day when it was quenched beneath a smoke-blackened sky in a field of crystal, is Binder of Chaos. For the chimera it once held in check, and the cause to which that hero was sworn.

Hmm. Warform Dex is 6. I can manifest Greater Natural Missile to throw poison-darts from my tentacles with a range of 50. Pool would be 11 normally (Dex 6 + Accuracy 5 with Claws of the Silver Moon), going up to 17 if I max Excellency.

... huh. Scribbler is not as bad at ranged combat as I thought. Those bonuses add up. (And damage is her normal tentacle damage, so 10L/2 with CotSM up, plus poison, at Rate 4 and Speed 4. Greater Natural Missile is actually rather nice when combined with Claws of the Silver Moon.)

So I can shoot her with a hail of silver poison darts from 150 yards away if I'm willing to take a -2 external penalty. I can't imagine beating her DV at that point unless I get surprise, but maybe I should try and see what happens :smallwink:

Spending 7 motes on the first Excellency. so 5 manipulate + 4 presence + 7 excellency + 2 stunt = 18 dice.

to establish a friendly intimacy, 12 successes were rolled. This is natural mental influence, so this means he can simply willpower it off, or use a mental defence.

You can get 4m back for a 2-die stunt, Oros (or 1 wp).

Also if he accepts that social attack it's one scene of building the Intimacy, not the full Intimacy in one go, just to clarify. But if he chooses to resist with WP the cost is 1 WP + (12 - his MDV)/3 WP, rounding down (because you got 12 successes). So say his MDV was 7 it would cost 2 WP to resist, if his MDV was 6 it would cost 3 WP.

Hmmmm... Throwing it out to the group. I know I want to grab a Charm but I don't know which one. Would you rather Ganyard be able to ignore wound penalties, do bashing damage with his poisons, summon elder things from the deep, create a poison worse than yozi venom, or learn sorcery?

Forgot one. He could also learn his first Shintai charm and transform into a giant bundle of mutations and death.

Ifni

Would you rather Ganyard be able to ignore wound penalties,

How often do you expect to be taking damage, and how many low-penalty HLs do you have compared to high-penalty HLs? (I am being lazy and not looking at your sheet - I feel these are relevant questions though)

do bashing damage with his poisons

I will say that Anemone is not good at doing bashing damage.

summon elder things from the deep

This sounds nifty. What kind of elder things?

create a poison worse than yozi venom

This sounds like it might be overkill. Then again, Malfeas...

learn sorcery?

Infernals do get some neat tricks with sorcery, but there's the usual caveat for Solar(oid) sorcerers: your native Charms will generally be (much) stronger than spells. What kind of spells would you be taking?

Actually, this brings up a point. Along with the various free-Excellency-and-Ox-Body houserules, are we using anything along the lines of "get a free spell with your sorcery initiation" or "get the appropriate countermagic free with your sorcery initiation"? This is a frequent houserule because otherwise the "X Circle Sorcery" charms don't actually do anything, they're purely a speedbump on the way to casting spells.

Forgot one. He could also learn his first Shintai charm and transform into a giant bundle of mutations and death.

... wait, why is this a question again?

(I advocate in favor of Shintai charms because they are awesome. And because you're playing a Slayer. Subtlety is for the weak :smalltongue:)
