Well, I got kinda confused by the theoretical physics going on in the end of the Ender Saga, but then again I was 11 or so when I read it. Plus I've reread Bean's books more times.

I guess I'm just predisposed to him because I own all of the books with Bean in them and not all of the ones with Ender.

Hmm... Three characters from a series I don't like (Star Trek), two characters who were ruined by new actors and someone from a book I've never read...

Does Neo count as a Sci-Fi icon? The Matrix has a greater claim to being Science Fiction than Star Wars.

This list seems to be a "Space Opera" icons test and since I don't like Space Opera I'm going to say Ripley.

As soon as you put "Pffttt... Whatever" you have lost all credibility to make a decent argument. As such, the rest of your statements are merely fanboi remarks.

That being said, while Ender is a well developed character, Vader is more of an Icon.
I also don't think that 3 characters from Star Trek should have been on this poll (even though I love Star Trek more than any onther Sci-fi Franchise) since only 2 other franchises were represented.

Original trilogy Vader. When you can advertise a film with a blank screen and the sound of a character's breathing you *know* you're dealing with an icon. :smallcool:

Well put, my sentiments exactly.

Obviously not every classic/recognizable sci-fi character could be listed in the poll but I do think more diversity would have been in order. Several great suggestions already (Ripley, Paul, and The Doctor being my favs). I'd like to add to the list:

1) Yoda - yes, another SW character but definitely an icon
2) E.T. - Phone home!
3) Robbie the Robot - A goofy choice, but he was in a TON of early Sci-fi stuff and lots of people recognize him.
4) The Terminator

And much as I like Worf, how'd he make the "icons" list? He's a good character but for Star Trek I see Kirk, Picard, Spock, and Khan as more in the icons category.

That Daneel robot from Asimov was a bit of an icon at one time as well, not that I like Asimov myself.

There's probably at least one Icon from Super Dimensional Fortress Macross or Space Battleship Yamato it would a crime to not put in. No one comes to mind at this moment though.

Zaphod might not be the most likable character in H2G2 but he's not just a Sci-Fi icon he's an icon within his own ego. Arthur Dent just is too down to earth but Marvin is probably an icon as well.

That's not really science though. It's scientific hooh-ha that Orson Scott Card made, concise as it is, its not real.

I'll say. From the way my husband talks, Ender's Game (and its various sequels) is the only book he's ever read.

...on the other hand, from the way I talk, you'd think The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (and the other four books in the trilogy, and the Dirk Gently books, plus everything else Douglas Adams has written) is the only book I've ever read. So meh.

Anyway, enough whining about Ford and the Doctor, I'll toss in my vote for Spock. You Ender/Vader fanbois don't see what's what, I see. :smallwink: Don't mind Obi-Wan though. Happy to share the spotlight with Obi-Wan.

Seriously though, it appears that there are so many famous and well-loved characters that it's hard to get a broad enough spectrum for the polls.

For me, I'm pretty surprised nobody even mentioned Palpatine. Especially Return of the Jedi Palpatine! He had one super phrase that I have never forgotten in the twenty-odd years since I'd seen it - he had this really nasty and sarcastic ass-raping grin on his face as he told Luke, "And now young Jedi, you will die." Man, I laughed so hard when I saw it!

Evil, sly, quick-witted and humorous. Those are the ingredients to a great villain!

Ooh, for me, it's a close one between Obi-Wan and Spock. They're both wise, logical, and usually correct. They both have mind powers and are nigh-incorruptable.

For epic moments, Obi-Wan died fighting Vader. For just persevering, Spock narrated Civilization IV.

Well, I'd say

but he wasn't up there so I'll go with

Although Grig,

is cool too, though not exactly an icon. He's mostly a "so sucky that he's awesome" character.

I would have voted for the Doctor but he isn't there. So I guess Obi-wan will do. After all he kicks a lot of Sith butt.

Ender... hands down. Not only is he THE military genius, but he's compassionate at the same time. A deeply complex and brooding character that the others in the list can't even touch.

Vader definitely gets my vote. Best Sci-fi/ fantasy/ film villain ever.
and to chime in on the Ender books the first one is good the rest get tiresome and preachy I felt my brain trying to escape my body just so it wouldn't have to suffer through them anymore. I liked Cards Alvin maker series also but it suffered from the same problem the longer the series got the more tiresome the books were.

I would have voted for the doctor. As corny as that show is, he still rocks. Vader is cool, but obi-wan kicked his butt...well sort of...the first time he did at least

Okay, that's it. Enough people have said they would vote for the Doctor that I think it's high time for a new poll.

And throw in Teal'c. Daniel's the cute one, sure, but I've always liked Teal'c. Not that I'd vote for him - I'll be voting for the Doctor. You did put him in this time, right?

I'd do it myself, but I'm slinking off for a snack. Although that does give me an idea for another topic...

Now, to give you people some controversy to discuss while I'm away (nothing sadder than coming back to a thread to find nothing going on): Ender is not an icon. Yeah I said it.
