View Full Version : [ELH] Is the Colossal Vermin SLA just a 3.0 remnant?

The Worm That Walks (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/wormThatWalks.htm) has a spell-like ability called Colossal Vermin that's worded in a confusing way. As per the SRD:

colossal vermin (as giant vermin, but it can increase the creature’s size from Large to Gargantuan and from Huge to Colossal)
What's confusing about this is that Giant Vermin (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/giantVermin.htm) doesn't work that way, it transforms mundane vermin (which would be at most Diminutive) into a size that scales with caster level. I looked up the 3.0 version which is indeed capped at Huge, but the wording still doesn't seem to fit because it sounds like Colossal Vermin is meant to be targeting Large or Huge vermin, and in any case the Worm That Walks' spell like abilities are all caster level 20 so only the highest tier should be relevant. So what is the intended interpretation of this? Should the 3.5 changes to Giant Vermin be considered to cover it, and if so should the SLA just be removed since the Worm That Walks already has Giant Vermin as another SLA for some reason?

Well, Epic Level Handbook is a 3.0 rulebook, so that's probably correct.

The trouble is it only makes marginally more sense in the context of 3.0 rules. It almost seems like the writers thought the spell was something like Animal Growth (which the Worm That Walks also has).
