It has been another good day in the town of Carn. The lot of you running the tavern and it's related businesses. You close your doors for the night and gather round a table to socialize. The topic of how you came to this town makes you all look back upon it.

*Flashback*

(2 years earlier)
You are a group of adventurers. You had set out for the town of Carn upon hearing it was having bear troubles and a reward was involved.

This is where our story begins.

You have been walking/riding on the main road and have finally made it to the gates of Carn. It looks to be a pleasant town. But you have been informed that there are recent bear attacks that need to be taken care off. What will you do first?

TownThere's the current tavern/pub
Smithy
Stables
Shops
Market
Houses
Gate
Main Square
OOCHope this isn't too confusing. You already know each other at this point. We are starting by playing the flashback of when you first entered Carn and then will flash forward to the present once this part is done. Please, please stick together splitting the party might makes things confusing.

"Company, I believe we all deserve a drink and a meal after this tedious journey. I heard the local pub has as decent a beer as you could hope for in a town run by tall folk." I announce for the whole party to hear.

Aye, I would like a good pint. However, I hear there's a bear ripe for the shooting, and I'm sure we can fetch a fair price for it's hide and flesh. Let us be quick about our meal, lest another hunter snatch our prey.

You easily find the Olden Crossroads Tavern and Inn. You enter and are able to find a few tables to push together. After you sit down the bartender approaches, "Ah, Master Dwarves, what can I get for you? Drink? Food? You ask we serve."

"I'll be having a goodly serving of stout or ale, and a boxcar helping of fried eggs and bacon, good Sir. Tis nearly noon, and we've been traveling since dawn on empty stomachs." I reply with the smile I reserve for people who bring me food.

"Elda, Thugrim, Adruin- would either of you happen to have any experience with bears? Some useful knowledge perchance? I would deem it highly inappropriate to go bear hunting unprepared. And who knows, might be there could be a less violent way to free this town of these dangerous beasts."

"I've fought bears." comes a gruff growl as Gomvak sits at the end of the table.
Turning his head to the waiter,"Meat. Roast meat and gravy... Lots of it. And a pitcher of ale... And make it fast." he says in a brisk, abrupt way.

Dragor followed the others, quiet as he was wont to do from time to time. As they walked down the streets, he watched the townsfolk pass by, nodding to many of them, averting his gaze from some, and actually hissing at one man in a large floppy hat after making a warding sign.

Upon entering the inn, he took a seat near the wall, checking for any cracks in the wood. When the waiter asked for there orders, he looked solemnly at the man for long moments before finally asking, "When did the lilacs bloom?"

Ozfer
2012-12-29, 01:16 AM
Hmph.. If there be more than one bear, than I won't lose sleep over killing a few. No matter how you look at it, they are dangerous, and I'm not taking any risks. He orders a draught of Ale from a waiter, then turns back to the table. And besides, these townsfolk would be appreciative of the food they will bring, and so will I.

And Dragor, the lilacs bloom when they rightly choose. Don't bother this big'un with your questions.

Dragor frowned at Aldan. Of all people, he expected the hunter to realize the importance of blooming lilacs, and the relationship to both fresh vegetables and bear behavioral patterns. Shrugging his shoulders, he leaned back and waited for the ale and bread to come.

Gorin listens to the chatter of his brethren. Dwarves would be dwarves, whether in the Mountain or out of it.

He waves the waiter over. "Bread, as fresh as you can get it, cheese, some vegetables, a leg of.. whatever you have, and aye beer."

He sits calmly back and waits while the tall folk bring the order. Patientence would serve him best.

Flynn decides that a song is in order. He retrieves his mandolin from his pack, and begins to play a song.

"There once was a Dwarf named 'enry,
And when he was asked who he was this was his reply"

*strums mandolin*

"I'm 'enry the Eighth I am,
'enry the Eighth I am, I am
Got married to the lass next door

Never a Willy or a Sam

@Starbin - The waiter doesn't know much other than cooking. He has no idea what a lilac is or when they bloomed.

Your food and drink is brought out to you. The other guests give the bard a weird look. This meal is very refreshing after your travels. But now it's time to get to business. There is a bear (or few) to be taken care of. I'm sure if you ask around you will find what you need.

I dig into the meal, and after a while announce: "This is excellent bacon! I'm glad we'll be staying here for a while." to no one in particular. As soon as I'm done, I turn to my companions. " I suggest we should try to find out as much as possible about these bears from the locals. I'm curious as to what kind of trouble they're actually causing. Are the just troubling livestock, or is it a more serious issue?"

Gorin smiles at the others. "We'd best hope it's not more serious. Iffin' the tall folk are having troubles, we'll naught be but an appetizer."

He gently breaks the crust of his bread, not fresh but still firm and tasty. A decent sourdough starter could improve it. "Spread out and chat amongst the locals lads. Best find out what's going on."

He gently quaffs his ale. ugh tall folk ale He picks up his leg of... something and hops off his chair, time to make the rounds.

The patrons seem annoyed with your questioning. The bartender comes up to you individually and asks that you please resume your seats. Upon reseating all of you he pulls up a stool as well.
"Now Master Dwarves, I can't have you goin 'bout ruinin folks meals. It's bad for business you knows. Now I heards y'all asking round about the recent events going on in this here town. Why don't I set you up with a room and after closing tonight I'll bring the one you want to talk to. That sound fair? Until then, why don't you go for a walk around our town. It's quite beautiful and some strong lads like yourselfs might be able to earn a spare coin or two."

Just relax - doing what ever you please

As his companions began to disperse, Dragor finished his meal, wondering if the others would find anything out. Once he was done, the granite-skinned dwarf burped loudly and gathered his things. Without a word to the others, Dragor left the inn and wandered through the town, gazing up and down the streets and listening to the idle chatter of the townsfolk. He rarely spoke to anyone, but would occasionally nod to passersby.

Eventually, he found his way to the edge of town, nearest the wilderness. He waited for a bit, to see if any of his comrades would appear, before setting off with a sigh. He slowly walked the perimeter of the town, looking for tracks or signs of bears.

Once his food arrives, Gomvak sets to eating. Tearing meat right from the bone with his teeth, the juices dribbling down his bald chin, only taking the food away from his mouth long enough to take a swallow of beer.

He watches as the others get up and start walking round and talking to the tall folk while staying where he is, calling for more food and drink.

When the barkeeper suggests that the group take a walk around town he starts growling, "No Long Leg tells Gomvak what to do no more. before hefting his maul and laying it on the table.
"Now you keep bringing Gomvak meat and beer and Gomvak wont make trouble."

Gomvak's going to stay put and keep eating and drinking. He'll be good as long as no one gives him any trouble.

Please read only your spoiler:

OzferYou leave the bar, pull out some wood and a knife and start to widdle as you walk. Slowly the wood starts to take the shape of a bear. There's some mistakes here and there (walking and widdling can d othat some times). The town seems pleasant. Some curious children start following you to see what your making. When you are finished they think it looks great (but they are kids so what do they know). One of them asks if they could have it (that is up to you). Unless you have other things you would like to do you may continue wandering until time is up.

StarbinAs you walk around the town, you here come curious chatter, about some random dwarf walking around the town's edge (you). You do hear once that the bears come about once a week or so. You try to recall anything you can remember about bears. You know they are large creatures that have poor vision but a good sense of smell. You think you may have heard that they can't climb trees or run down hills. But you're not too sure about that. You are unsuccessful at finding any tracks.

Malak'aiYou eat your fill of meat and get a few refilling on your beer. At one point a dirty old fellow stumbles into the bar. He stumbles around asking for a spare copper at each table. He comes up to you. (up to you to give or not [doesn't affect your current money]). The bartender approaches, gives the man a loaf of bread and escorts him out. Seems like this has happened many times before. Soon after Flynn start to play a tune (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLqBV6lf298), not one of your taste but tolerable

XynphosYou ask the bartender for a local song. He mentions a few that you have heard of before. You decide to go with this one. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLqBV6lf298)

Gorin nods sagely as the bartender reseats the company. Clearly these tall folk were not pleased about the bears, but then why didn't they want to get help?

Curious.

The paladin hops down once more and braves the bartenders eye. "I don't suppose you could use a hand in the kitchen?"

He could keep a weather eye on Gomvak and try and gather some intelligence on the bears, if nothing else he could improve the quality of the food here.

This seems to be an effort in futility ... guess I'll go find the herbalist and ask where the huckleberries grow! On a related note, this feels a little weird - a town that complains about a bear problem, and when we start to ask questions, the inhabitants get a little salty. Maybe a conspiracy? A shady looking figure enters the tavern. His hooded head turns and then the person makes his way to a door near the back that you have not noticed yet. The bartender seems uneasy about the mans entry. He approaches you after the door to the room closes. "That's the one. He'll explain the whole situation. You follow him into the backroom. The light in the room is dim and you see a long table. At the far end you can make out the cloaked figure. As Aldan exits the room, he finds Dragor sitting impassively at the table they originally sat at. He stared at the table, seemingly lost in his thoughts. For so longe, he had been an outcast by choice, never feeling comfortable around his fellow dwarves. 'Special' was just another word for strange, and he had felt his strangeness for practically all of his life. It had been easier to join the ranks of the Rovers, where most of his days were spent scouting the land alone, or in silence with a given partner.

Therefore, when he stepped outside of his shell and offered up his opinions or tried to interact with those around him and was insulted for doing so, it hurt. Worse, it angered him, and forced him back into old ways. Perhaps he shouldn't have let the human get to him like that, but the man had been insufferable, given the situation.

At the scuffing of boots, he glanced up and saw Aldan approaching. Silently, he waited for what the other had to say.

The graveyard was first. The tavern second. Then the smithy and town hall. We believe the church will be the final target but there's no way to be certain."

"Thanks for the information." Thugrim says as he downs the last of his mug. "Let's see if a little Dwarven know how can clean up this town." He looks to the others at the table. "Let's round everyone up and set up camp at the church." He grabs his things and heads outside to find those who left and scout out the church.

Dragor, I know that man has the manners of a grub, but these people need help, and it sounds like we need help helping them, if you see what I mean. Even if he won't pay, we can figure a way to get you compensation.

Dragor stared at Aldan for a moment, then shrugged his shoulders. "I've got no issue helping them that needs help. I don't need money for that. But I'll not work with that one," he nodded towards the back room. "Strikes me as a wearer o' floppy hats ..."

His glittering black eyes glanced towards the door as it opened to reveal the remainder of their kin. "Best the honey stores ..." he muttered, lost in thought again.

Sorry about the delay ... missed the post last week, and I was on the road today.

Alright then, we'll keep you out it when we need to speak with him. Let's see what the others have to say.

"No one calls Gomvak fool without paying a price. the short haired Dwarf growls as he glares at the man who named himself Jax. "You better hope you're right about where these bears will attack Long Leg or Gomvak will find you and crush you... Gomvak might just do it anyway." he says, his lips quirked in a mean smile before stomping out of the room, heading to the others in his company.
"Come! Gomvak itches for a fight. Let's find these bears before Gomvak gets bored."

Dragor looked up as Gromvak stormed out, as was his fashion. "I will fight with you, but where are the bears? And who is checking the honey stores?"

Gomvak stares at Dragor for a moment, his mouth working as if trying to work out an answer before walking out the inn without saying anything.
Gomvak never knows what that one is trying to say... Too much time playing with trees and flowers Gomvak suppose. he thinks, heading off in the direction of the Church.

Dragor looks confusedly at the others (which might only be Aldan right now). "Did I say something wrong? Or is he checking right now? You see, bears like honey, and if you can find where the sources are, you might be able to determine their locations. Or, if there is a general store that stores and sells honey, we might find the bears attack that spot. Or beekeepers. Or berry farmers. Or ..."

The dusky-skinned dwarf continued, muttering to himself (did he say stapler? what's a stapler?) until he trailed off to silence.

You all exit the tavern, it dark out and you start walking. After a moment you stop... You don't know where the blazes you are going it's dark out and things are not very well lit.

You mayRoll a concentration check to see if you remember from your wander earlier the where abouts of the church

or (not and/or, just or)

roll a listen check :)

Gomvak stands there, moving his head from side to side, listening in the darkness.

Hmm... I think it may be... This way? What do you hear Gormak?

Aldan puts his hand on the hilt of his sword, looking around.

Can I ready an action to draw my sword?

Hearing anything through this haze is pretty difficult, you only here noise coming from peoples homes as they go about their nightly routines. One of you how ever thinks they remember where the church is (Aldan/Ozfer)

it's one street to your right and at the end of the street away from the tavern

Aldan informs everyone of which way the church is, and sets off slowly and cautiously, if no-one has anything to say. [Everyone read the spoiler above :smalltongue:]

Gomvak finally comes out of what appeared to be a daze of concentration and grunts, stamping along behind Aldan.

Dragor followed the others, weapons at the ready, ears straining for the sounds of bears.

Or honeybees.

Or screams.
