So, my rpg group - or better our rpg duo - wants to play something new - pulp science fiction.

We feel brave enough to make our own setting from scratch, but if there are others out there then they'll be welcome, at least as inspirations.

Personally, I envision something like Captain Future, Flash Gordon, or Ijon Tichy (the lovingly trashy / camp german TV series adaption (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ijon_Tichy:_Raumpilot)) for the setting.

But we are really unsure about the system. We have WestEnd Games' D6 Star Wars and also D20 Star Wars Saga. We also have GURPS 3rd Edition with some future (Ultratech 1+2) / space (Space) supplements and also GURPS Traveller supplements.

But we might want a system that's a bit more simple, but not too simple either. A classless system would be nice. Amateur / semiprofessional homebrew systems are also welcome.

In my opinion, you'll want something lighter on the rules...or, rather, with rules geared towards story-linked mechanics. You don't need practical details to get in your way.

Fate Core (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/evilhat/fate-core) is my first recommendation: it's Kickstarting...but you get the beta PDF immediately for pledging at any level. Including $1. It's the leanest, easiest-to-understand, best iteration of the FATE engine, which is all about encouraging dramatic and colorful play, particularly pulp action. It's also big on creativity. (I've also heard some good and also mixed things about Bulldogs! (http://galileogames.com/bulldogs-fate/), which uses an earlier version of the FATE engine, but is also more directly tuned into the genre you want.)

I wouldn't call FATE super-simple, either. It's not a complex system, but it's also a system that has a rich structure, if you want it.

I know that Savage Worlds is often put forth as a good pulp system, and I suspect this is very true. You'll want to look into that as well.

Yeah. My only suggestion would be to either give players seven aspects, not force them to do the adventure phases of the backstory, or just make it so that you don't have to come up with an aspect for each adventure phase. I find it pretty limiting when I have to come up with an adventure that ties in to an Aspect like Girl in Every City (is the adventure a chase across the country? Where I have time to stop and woo pretty women?).

From other Fate games, Spirit of the Century can be easily adapted into games that take place in a modern or futuristic setting. And the SRD can be found on the net legally for free!

I'm currently using a combination of Deadlands classic and SilCORE, but I have heard good things about Slipstream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpre-gqsXxg), which is Savage Worlds. I have also used Mutants & Masterminds to great effect.
