View Full Version : Oh god why....what to play.

So recently our party split up. My character went one way. The rest of the party went the other way. In game we thought that we would only be split up for a short amount of time.
However, the cave the rest of the party went to turned out to be a lot larger then what we had thought it was. It is a temple of some evil home-brewed god. It is most likely going to take them several sessions to finish.
Meanwhile my Bard is going to be perfectly fine. He sitting pretty in one of the local castles taking care of some political **** and becoming a superstar.
Anyways my GM is allowing me to make a temporary character to help out the party while they are dungeon diving so I don't have to miss any of the sessions. The problem is I have no idea what to play.

The party make up right now is a Ranger/Scout, a Duskblade, a cleric Dwarf and a Sword Sage all level 12.

Basically I want to make a character that will cause the entire room to face palm. I want to make him funny/fun to play but at the same time effective.

I play a highly optimized bard as my main. This time I want to play something different. So come on Playground give me some ideas.

BoVD, BoED, Dragon magic and Draconomicon the are all banned. Otherwise almost all other Wizard published D&D e3.5 books are open.

Since it is only for one session, play a rogue/ wizard/ Incantatrix who especially specializes in the spell "Cloud of Knives"

Take the Chicken-Infested flaw. Optimize the crap out of it - I'm sure you can think of something, but whatever you come up with is guaranteed to induce massive facepalming and be quite amusing.

An illusion-themed wizard working with ultra-real illusions could be both quite fun and effective.

Gnome Illusionist 5 / Full-caster 2 / Shadorcraft mage 5

Variants:
Lvl1 racial substitution
Chains of Disbelief
Illusion mastery

1 Spell focus (illusion)
3 Earth Sense
5 Heighten Spell
6 Earth spell
9 Arcane Thesis (silent image)
12 Signature spell (silent image)

If your DM doesn't let you qualify for Signature spell with illusion mastery, don't take that variant (be a focused specialist instead), and take a flaw for spell mastery.

Chaos Gnome Illusionist/SCM. Make all of your illusions sight-gags of some sort.

EDIT: swordsages, everywhere!

Play a Wilder or Psychic Warrior who thinks he's a druid.

I draw upon the fangs and teeth of a wolf! (Bite of the Wolf)
My hands draw strength from my enemies like the roots of a tree from the ground! (Vampiric claws)

Make Wolverine. Totemist 2 lets you get giant claws attached to the back of your hands and Warshaper 4 gives you a healing factor.

Yes, this was inspired by Another Gaming Comic.

You could also add Barbarian and some way of getting Psionic Expansion and call yourself The Hulk. Or do both at once for extra lulz.

That gnome shadowcraft\illusionist thing was exactly what i had in mind too after reading op.

He can dish out some serious hurt, be great for BFC and utility, and you can have lots of fun with a crazy ol' gnome as a PC. Play him with a crazy personality and let the good times roll.

Be an incredibly terrifying barbarian (Imperious Command + Dreadful Wrath + Intimidating Rage and so on) of an incredibly nonthreatening race like gnome or halfling.

Or be a Dvati ardent whose two bodies split their two primary mantles, so they're constantly arguing with themselves about their opposing philosophies.

I will tell you what to play.

Race: Warforged
Class: Wildshape Ranger 5/Master of Many Form 7
Feats: Adamantine body...
Items: Beasthide property on your composite plating...

Charge into battle and yell out "Dinobots, Transform!" Wildshape into a T-Rex.

You could play a ghost/psychic warrior with Illithid Heritage and Illithid Grapple (x4) who uses malevolence to possess enemies, makes them explode into tentacles (because of the above feats), and proceeds to eat face.

I think we can all agree a Winged Anthropomorphic Sympotic Creature Baleen Whale/Anthropomorphic Bat Level 6 Pyschic Warrior, is clearly best for the face palms of the session.

Anthropomorpic Turtle ninja is also a funny option, but not very effective.

I thinking either going Tibbit thrallherd with a mouse illusionist as a cohort. Or a drunken Master with the chicken infested flaw.

Wizard 6/fortunes friend 5/ fatespinner 1. Then take ALL the luck feats, and make yourself a cocky bastard and use ALL the luck rerolls. i did that in a campaign and my party eventually tried to kill me off, i made an enemies natural 20 to a natural 1 lol. advantageous avoidance for the win! Or possibly an anthropomorphic whale monk :P

Did you remember to grab the domain powers for both the Luck Domain and the Cat Domain?

Alter Fortune is also nice.

Play an Assassin. Assassins are cool.

Play an Assassin. Assassins are cool.

Play a Gnome Beguiler, who tells everyone he's an Assassin. Beguilers pretending to be Assassins are cool. :smallamused:

Or, play a Battle Sorcerer/Abjurant Champion with a Quarterstaff (just because they are cool). Boost the damage like crazy with Greater Mighty Wallop. Cast Enlarge Person on yourself. Get a level of Druid, cast Shillelagh. Talk about "Good pieces of Hickory" while smashing people with your 8D6 Quarterstaff. Take Vow of Poverty, just for funsies, since you won't be needing much magic equipment and you're only a one shot wonder, anyway.

I haven't mapped this out at all. I just love whacking monsters with sticks. :D

EDIT: I spent some time trying to map this build out. Do NOT take VoP. Wow, I never really understood how bad that Feat and the feat chain is. The number of Exalted Feats you can get are many, but they are really, really bad.

I still say you should go for Bubs the Commoner (CR16 Dinosaur pet at level 4). That's guaranteed to elicit groans.

Play a tibbit. Use your WBL to buy a titanic magebred warbeast rat for under 3,000 gp. Laugh maniacally while glorying in your epic pet.

For bonus points, buy that collar (from A&EG, I believe) that lets your pet keep its stats but at Small size.

D4rtagnan

Most likely going to play a tibbit simply because I want to see how long it takes for the party to figure out that the cat is a PC.

I like to go with Master Specialist for that type of build (could work for the two extra PrC levels).

Step 1: Show this thread to the DM

Step 2: Make a "new character" that is identical to your old one except he has a mustache and is the oposite allignement (or close to it). Evil/Good/Nuetral twins are fun!

Step 3: ????

Step 4: Profit! (And by this I mean have your original twin put your character in his will as main heir... Family love and all that jazz... Plus more cool lewt).

Since you won't be using it long, consider something that goes boom when it dies, then make sure it dies.

There are several ways of going boom when you die. If you are an undead made by the right mage (LM destructive retrobution), if you have an element subtype and a feat from savage species, and probably many others. Generally they are a BAD IDEA because they involve dying, which is usually an expensive condition to remove.

When you want to make sure the character doesn't walk away with a share of your loot though, playing a suicidal exploding undead monk can be fun.
