Endnotes:
These endnotes represent an existence-ending event to a character, such as when a character has been killed (i.e., Nale kills the Chief). Or a permanent exit from the strip (i.e., the Lawyers take Zz'dtri away). Note that in D&D, not all death is permanent. In that case, the event is listed in lowercase (i.e., Xykon's phylactery restoring his body). Some characters have died, but we don't know why (for example, we know that Eugene Greenhilt died many times before dying permanently of old age). Other characters have died, but we don't the name of the killer (such as when Fruit Pie the sorcerer is killed by an anonymous goblin). Such events are denoted with "U". If two footnotes are connected by a hyphen ("-"), it means they jointly killed the subject.

FAQ

Q. Where did you get the idea to do this?

A. This started as a game (Guess which character had the most appearances, then second most, etc.), but once all characters with three or more appearances were guessed, someone had the idea of keeping a running total, just for curiosity's sake. Then someone thought it might belong here instead of silly games, so n11 moved the list here instead of there. When n11's thread got 'ported over to the new forum, the formatting changes made it difficult to read. Plus, n11 hasn't shown up for quite a few comics, so the list was falling hopelessly out of date. So I have reformatted the list for the new forums and updated it. n11 hasn't shown up in the new incarnation of the forums, so now I'm doing it.

Q. What counts as an appearance?

A. Any likeness of the character being visible (so Elan's appearance on Nale's blueprint counts, and Belkar's self-portrait in blood counts) and any dialog from a character, even if "off-panel" or invisible (so the strip where the party is in the invisibility sphere counts for each of the main characters)

Q. What's with the stuff in red?

A. Those are appearances in Origin of the PCs and Start of Darkness, and the bonus strips from Dungeon Crawling Fools and No Cure For the Paladin Blues, books available for sale, with content not found on the webcomic. Each page of the book is treated as a separate strip. If you want to know what these appearances and characters mean, buy the book! (You won't be sorry.) And thanks to Mechafox for compiling the appearances from Dungeon Crawling Fools and No Cure For the Paladin Blues!

Q. What if someone appears multiple times in a strip and what's with the numbers in blue?

A. Multiple appearances in one page of a strip still only count as one appearance. However, since we count appearances in bonus materials by the page, we also keep track of appearances in multiple pages of a multi-page strip. We do this with the numbers in blue. For example, Elan, Haley and Roy appear in the first and second pages of the very first multi-page comic, Comic 120 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0120.html). So the second appearance is counted and adds one to their blue count total.

Q. Why haven't you listed the goblins/hobgoblins/zombies/ghouls/ghasts/Azure City guards?

A. A character only gets listed if it is recognizable as an individual or if it's a recurring distinct group (such as the flumphs or the demon roaches). The indistinct masses do not get listed.

Q. What about the [insert unnamed character that only appears once]?

A. If a character appears only once and is not named, then it doesn't get listed. Otherwise, the list would be completely unmanageable.

Q. Who is Ted?

A. The appearances of a goblin caster in #90, #93, #105, and #107 could be the same caster, given the limited context, and he could be given the same “Ted” first mentioned in #90, but the Giant has specified no such connection was ever intended. We're listing him anyway because we think it's clever. :smalltongue:

Q. Hey didn't you list Sabine's fiendish form as an alternate form? And wasn't this FAQ question previously about that?

A. Yes. Sabine used to be listed with her red-leathered adventurer form (the one she originally appeared in) as her "natural" form and her fiendish form as a magical alteration. But now she has appeared in her fiendish form more often than her leather-clad form, so I've switched it around. Her fiendish form is now her natural form and the red-leather clad adventurer is one of her alternate magical forms (along with the cop, geisha and schoolgirl disguises she's assumed).

Q. Why is Banjo listed as a character? Banjo is an inanimate object!

A. Blasphemy!! Seriously, you're probably right. But we like Banjo.

Q. Why is Shlubbo Noname-zaki from strip 435 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0435.html) listed? That's not his real name.

A. Well, it could be his real name. Either way, it's funny.

Q. In Other Interesting Alterations, why don't you mention how often we get to see Roy/Miko/Chief/[insert other corpse] as a corpse?

A. We don't keep track of corpses. It's not interesting. It would take up too much time and effort.

Hmm... looks like we'll need some sort of endnote to indicate characters that were killed and then resurrected... or should that just mean we lose the endnote of that person's now temporary demise?

Blood
2006-11-21, 02:58 PM
We should use a footnote for ressurection, and maybe if it gets more specific later on, specific footnotes for who ressurected them. Just losing their "death" endnote would be an insult to their courage. :smallwink:

Wrecan
2006-11-21, 04:26 PM
Maybe I could simply strikeout the death endnote. So, for example, were Yik-Yik to be resurrected, his entry would read:

Yik-YikB

This shows that Belkar killed him, but it didn't stick. By the end of the comic, we could have entries like

Yik-YikBBBVBNBB

Sir_Norbert
2006-11-23, 06:12 PM
That's a bit messy, especially as the strikethru B isn't easy to tell apart from a plain B. For now (or at least, if the wizard *does* get resurrected and makes a further appearance -- Xykon's attack may interrupt this) I'd just add a separate footnote for "resurrected", as Blood suggested. I don't think it's likely we'll get a situation where we need anything more than this, but if one does come up, we can deal with it when it does.

I think we should be cautios here - just because the Monster In The Darkness SAID something happened doesn't mean it ACTUALLY happened. What if Xykon didn't actually kill Dorukan, but trap his soul in a gem or something? We haven't seen it in the comic ourselves, and I don't think we're on very safe ground going with what characters think they know...

And while we didn't see the Dorukan figure wih x's in his eyes to denote death. We did see Xykon and Dorukan fighting, with the MitD confirming the death. Presumably, MitD was an eyewitness. If Dorukan shows up alive, we can always remove the "X"

Soon Kim very likely died of natural causes, from the age and frailness he seems to be. I think the tag should be #, since you can't be ressurected from the dead after dying of natural causes. That way we won't need to lowercase it when they are ressurected.

Then Eugene Greenhilt's tag should technically be "uuuuuu#," since he died and was ressurected 6(?) times before dying of natural causes.

Or turn it into a lowercase if we find he was dead, but was ressurected.

Query: Should we count Nale's appearances as Elan as an appearance by Elan (as well as an appearance by Nale) on the theory that it is a "likeness" of Elan? This applies in reverse for Elan's appearances as Nale. After all, we counted the drawing of Elan on Nale's blueprint, the statue of Xykon, etc.

If Sabine were to alter her form to look like Celia, wouldn't we count that as an appearance by Celia (as well as by Sabine)? I'm thinking I need to add a few appearances to the twins. (To be specific it would add 10 more appearances for Elan and 2 more for Nale.) What do you think?

No, definitely not -- it isn't an appearance of the character. In fact, I think appearances that are only "in likeness" (such as the blueprint) should be crossed off for the same reason.

I'm inclined to agree. However, there are all sorts of judgment calls that could go either way -- I'd count something like Xykon watching them in his crystal ball as an "appearance" if we actually see the characters, but wouldn't count this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0082.html) as as appearance of Durkon and Hilgya. Also, I'd consider this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0142.html) to be similar to the blueprint, and not count it as an appearance of the Linear Guild members who were lost on their first encounter with the OotS.

The bottom line is that there are enough gray areas that the fine details of the statistics are always going to be a bit fuzzy.

I sympathize witht his position, but I think that bridge was crossed long ago. I'm not going to go back and undo all the "likeness" appearances, such as Xykon's statue. So I think I will add in Nale's appearances as Elan as an appearance for Elan and vice versa.

I do not like the red additions of the Order of the PC, because there are no strip sectioning in this book, only pages. Also, this statistic is a static count (it will not change) while the accumulated figures are dynamic. This makes the figures from OotPC slightly incompatible with figures from the ongoing strip, and also quite uninteresting.

For these reasons, I (for one) would like to have the red statistics separated from the black, under a separate heading: Number of appearances in OotPC.

Good work, though...

I put it in, but I'm not sure Elan's wardrobe change counts as "interesting". I'm actually sort of regretting including Thog's stint in Leprechaun clothes. I'm not, after all, including Haley in her date dress, Roy in his wig, or Thog and Elan in prison garb.

Gotta think about it. (For posterity, Elan appeared in his "old clothes" 217 times.)
Or Roy with his new boots / Xykon's crown or Elan with his new sash... true. But it is a pretty significant ongoing change for him, and looks like it's going to be permanent - I'm sure if we thought those other things "interesting enough", we'd include them - but really, I wasn't so interested in things like "Durkon as Band Aid" ;) I saw this as more akin to Sabine in her adventuer identity and then in her fiend form - that's who the baseline character IS...

Wrecan
2007-01-21, 09:17 AM
But Sabine is not listed in the "Interesting" section, but the magical alteration section, to keep track of her polymorphs. I think I'm not going to include Elan in new clothes. Maybe when Elan shows up in his 534th appearance, I'll stick "Elan in old clothes" on the interesting alteration list.

Tmabbbb
2007-01-21, 09:49 PM
The scar is a difference in the two pictures, but since they otherwise look identical, (with the exception of the line on his shirt, but this is a very, very slight difference) we should count the two of them as the same person. As well, he is named "Medium-sized creature", and since scars can happen if you are a paladin in an army over 105 strips, I think they should be counted as being the same person.

Vargtass
2007-01-22, 04:24 AM
I do not see the difference in the line; it must be slight indeed. However, I missed the scar before, and now I note that the colour of the boots is different too. So perhaps I am indeed wrong.

Should Windstriker not get some sort of endnote, since he's a class feature and is therefore lost when Miko falls?

Also, you have Roy's mother in red text, even though she has appeared in the main comic (#113).

Porthos

You have Thog listed as appearing in On the Origins of the PCs. Well I'm fairly certain that Thog never appears anywhere in the book.

Yeah there is a nameless Half-Orc/Orc in the book, but I'm fairly sure his teeth structure is completely different to Thog. I don't have it in front of me to verify, but I'm 90% sure that is not Thog in the "Job Interview" scene.

Now if you are referring to the blank page that has Thog saying (something like) "thog not appear in this book. thog sad.", I'd hardly think that would count. :smalltongue:

Now I'll admit that I might be wrong, and if so, apologies in advance. Good Work on the list BTW.

1) I'm amenable to giving Windstriker an endnote, although I don't know we've seen the last of him. Should it be "M"?

2) Roy's mom never had a name and thus wouldn't be on the list at all if she didn't show up in OotPCs.

Why wouldn't that count?

[NOTE: I decided that further spoilerization was a tad silly. If you want to know nothing about Origins of PCs, stop reading]

I wouldn't count it for much the same reason I wouldn't count Belkar's introduction in Dungeon Crawlin Fools (which was "in character"). IMO, Thog's appearance was just a humorous doodle that was meant to amuse. Of course, I really want to stay away from the dreaded "canon" arguments (they never, ever, end well :smalltongue:). So, instead I will say that I think that Thog's comments were outside of the narrative flow, and thus it was not a "character appearance". Mind you, my definition of "narrative flow" is pretty darn flexable (It would have to be for me to include the Fan Mail strips, after all. :smallwink: ), but I gotta draw the line somewhere.

For instance there is a similar large scale doodle of Miko in No Cure for the Paladin Blues. And I wouldn't include it for the exact same reasons.

I guess I am saying this: If you include the doodle of Thog as a character appearance, you would also have to include the vote incentives that appeared in DCF (they serve the exact same function, after all). And if you include the Vote Incentives in DCF, would you then count the ones that are archived "on site", but didn't make it into the book?

But hey, as I said, it's your list, so knock yourself out if you want to include that doodle.

Sir_Norbert
2007-02-04, 08:53 AM
I haven't read the book of DCF so I don't know where the doodles and incentives appear, but Thog's appearance in Origins is on a numbered page between the beginning of the strips proper and the end, not in an introduction.

Wrecan
2007-02-05, 10:25 AM

Actually, given this script, I think it's time to review how often the high priest has appeared...

267 (second to last panel), with first appearance of the female priestess.
283 (third to last panel), with second appearance by the priestess
284 (fourth panel), third appearance by the priestess, and second appearance by the long-haired and mustachioed clerics
298 (seventh panel) is the fourth appearance by the priestess, but not the high priest
303 (throughout) and fifth appearance by the priestess
410 (first, second and fourth frames)

So, that means...
Five appearances by the High Pries and High Priestess (I'm assuming they are of equal rank)
Two appearances by the long-haired and mustachioed clerics.

The list has been updated!

Yes, that was what I was trying to imply, only that I do not remember Wizard Guy to actually having been resurrected off panel yet. I thought the high priests came to do that now, only found a better target. Shojo I do recognize...

We've got Hinjo, O-Chul, and the whole OOTS except for Belkar. The wizard on the podium seems to be the same one who helped V scribe spells in #306, and the guy crowning Hinjo is the usual Azure City High Priest.

Here's an idea for the future... make each character's name a link to the strip with that character's very first appearance. I can't remember some of them (especially the 1 & 2 appearance characters), and it would be fun to just go straight to the strip where they came into the story.

It could even be that character's most defining appearance rather than their first.

Caedrel

Um, someone demonstrated that once - it WAS nice, but our maintainer at the time felt that it required more effort than was warranted, so it never went anywhere. So I guess Wrecan's the one you need to convince! :smallwink:

(btw Grand Larcenist isn't in the current list of Characters With Two Appearances - and if we don't count the number of appearances of Miko (fallen), how will we know if/when they overtake the number of times she unfallen? :smallwink: )

I suppose Wrecan actually has some sort of entry record, on the strips since he took over the list, with the relevant strips listed (but not linked). Also, it would probably not include the first half or so of entries.

That's because Mijung has appeared twice.

Um, can we wait until there's confirmation in the comic itself that it IS an imposter of Kykon before proclaiming him as such?
That's why I started my sentence with the word "if."

Sabine appeared as a schoolgirl in at least 5 strips:

Good catch! From the 380 entry of this thread,. I find that Sabine was only listed as fiend for that strip.

Great catch on the elemental! Also, I meant to list Sabine as a schoolgirl only in her human form. When she's a fiend wearing a schoolgirl outfit, there's no magical alteration, and she's not really a school girl at that point. So she appears magically as a school girl once and in school girl costume 5 times. So that's fixed too.

I see your point. Sabine's impersonation has a red apron and is tanned. However, Mr. Real Blacksmith has appeared as himself twice, here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0142.html), and here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0174.html). So, twice it is!

I don't think the girl kissing Elan at New Years is the waitress from #309. The dress is not the same, and the appearance does not have any other sufficiently distinguishing characteristics to make the match.

I think you're right. The hair and the white sash fooled me. Elan's waitress is removed!

I would be interested in knowing:

a) How many strips featured all the members of the Order of the Stick.
b) How many strips featured at least one member of the Order of the Stick (or conversely, how many featured none of them).

How difficult would it be to find that out? Would it require going back through all the strips, or do you have the details archived somewhere?

Thanks.

Shouldn't Frudu have +1 strip from origin of PSs?

EDIT: It's in page 56

427: General Chang, Vaarsuvius. Probably Captain (now "named") makes his 2nd appearance (also in 426), but this is somewhat ambiguous.

General Chang, Vaarsuvius

The first captain had a shield. The second one does not. These are generic captains.

This was quite an issue. Fourteen recurring characters. Xykon plows his way back into the top ten. Hinjo passes Shojo. ("Now the circle is complete")

And a great issue besides. Go, Giant!

I suppose you have not counted as a Xykon appearance the Xykonly Xykon Decoy in strip #426

Wrecan
2007-03-20, 10:57 AM
No, I did, because it is a representation of Xykon, which counts as surely as the statue of Xykon did, or Elan's smmoned image of him.

I've also added a reference to the second appearance of Brave Xykon Decoy's Skeletal Steed (which I am just going to call "Skeletal Steed")

Can't we find a better name than "Xykonly Xykon Decoy"?

If 'Disgruntled Gnome Wizard' and 'Dragons near barbecue sauce trap' count as named characters, can we add 'Waitress-using-the-money-to-put-herself-through-Ninja-School'? (# 312)
ooo, and I've just noticed in the last panel of that strip, the winged buffalo is called Harold. Is Harold listed?
three cheers for Wrecan, mighty character counter!

They don't. Those are unnamed characters with two appearances.

I think you got them all. I'm treating Sangwaan as having been killed unless she shows up again in a future thread. (I doubt it.)

As a potential member of the Sangwaan fanclub (should one ever be founded, or should I found it), I would advise not listing her as dead just yet....at least see how the battle turns out first. Just to emphasize: Sangwaan has NOT been shown as dead SO FAR in the comic. Therefore there is still a chance that she is alive (she's only MOSTLY dead......). Anyway, semantics perhaps, (or maybe just denial), but I would hold off on attributing her death to Xykon, anyway. Didn't the dragon attack her?

Long, rambling post that reveals my deep, abiding sympathy for a diviner who may or may not be dead (No! What am I saying? SHE LIVES!!!!!!!!!!).......

So be it.

The dragon has no will of her own. It is a tool of Xykon as surely as Roy's sword is a tool of Roy.

Vox

Ok, true.......And you may be right about Sangwaan's ultimate fate. Anyway, when and if she does reappear, how would you indicate that? Would you just drop the "killed by Xykon" symbol?

Wrecan
2007-03-22, 05:12 PM
I would just drop the "X" from after her name. (Unless she gets raised, then it would turn into an "x".)

Actually, should we now be using the MM titles for said Xykon copies? ie Death Knight Xykon Decoy, Huecuva Xykon Decoy and Eye of Fear and Flame Xykon Decoy?
