World notes:
+ Half the world is in constant light, the other in constant darkness.
+ Wood is next to impossible to come by.
+ The Gray is the barrier between Light and Dark… but people do not travel there; most that do never make it out the other side. It is disorienting and difficult to see through, and there are creatures there that have no use for eyes… wicked things that hunt those that do not belong.
+ Only dwarves know the riddle of dread steel (use the carbon from the dead instead of wood)… has something about it that bothers most people, so most non-dwarves don’t typically use it (not good, anyways).

Notes

Three suns –
+ Quaynah (the Unmoving One, the South Sun); remains stationary and is used in navigation.
+ Karask (the Demon Eye, Firebearer); largest of the three, marks the time of day.
+ Ralleta (the Quick One, Little Sister); smallest, marks the change of the seasons.
People gather mist from The Gray to condense into water. Thus, majority lives near the barrier. This is dangerous, so those tasked with gathering the mist have an almost religious importance. They are called Hartooshians, though some call them Myst Weavers.
There are some nomadic tribes that travel with the “seasons” around the globe, following the expansion of the mists. However, this also drives them further into the south than normal… which is where kaldivan and fire denizens live.
Water and ice magics do not work here.

Creatures:
Badoshii (riding lizards – store water in necks like a camel’s hump)
Bornog (armadillo/rabbit like creatures - borrow; hunted for meat)
Kaldivan (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=15328334&postcount=31) (sand worms – mashup between Dune and Tremors; have both a larva stage and an adult stage)
Djinn'mahandere (genies/genasi, outsiders heavily tied to elemental plane of air)
Sala'mahandere (genies/genasi, outsiders heavily tied to elemental plane of fire)
Scorpions (normal, dire, giant)

Races:
Dwarves (Egyptian)
Elves (Fremen/Navajo)
Humans (Arabic/Persian)
Thri-kreens (Aboriginal/African)
Troods (lizardfolk; akin to orcs in this realm)

Notes

One moon -
+ Wothok (The Watchman) – faint, not very reflective at all. People believe that he is “always on patrol, always watching”.
Fire magics do not work here.
Most races how low-light; those that do not possess darkvision.
Some extremely rare (and desperate) individuals transport ice through The Gray and make themselves very, very, very rich… if they live.
People gather peat moss called tezedorf, which is used as fuel for their fires. Also burn ‘fungal wood’ (called jarvgurnvos; from the dwarves) and animal fat (as a last resort). The gathering of tezedorf is dangerous, so those tasked with the job have an almost religious importance. They are called Tezeskas.

Creatures:
Bjoald (Walrus/Sea lion) – blubber and ivory (bucks, in particular)
Beorn (Polar Bear)
Donzen (Riding Reindeer)
Vulmet (Bear-like creature w/ horns)
Wolves (normal, dire, winter)

Races:
Drinak (yakfolk)
Dwarves (Cossack)

Question for you.. Are we going to be a traditional "party", or is this a more freeform endeavor, similar to the gladiator game?

Erasmas
2013-05-13, 04:26 PM
I was going for more of a traditional party route with this. That way, I can minimize how much bookkeeping/thread-combing that I need to do for it.

Looks good so far, Pife... just gives a decent idea about what your characters look like. Sonja's going to be a tough one to find a perfect match for (since she is so particular-looking)!

Alright everyone... I have the initial prompts up in the IC threads! Just keep in mind the usual rules when posting. please -
No taking actions for other characters.
No outright killing other characters (posted that you attack them and how is fine... posting that you stab them through the throat and watch them bleed out in not.
Stay within the believable bounds of your proposed character's abilities.
Feel free to create the names/existence of minor NPCs and places as needed, but I may ask you to make changes to these as I need/desire as to make it fit better with the story or setting. Please do not take this personally.
If you have any questions at all, about anything with the game, please do not hesitate to ask!
Be considerate of your fellow players.
Have fun!

Yermak Rimerhymer the Dwarven Skald

Appearance: Short and powerfully built, like many of his people Yermak keeps his head and cheeks shaved, leaving a long thick silver braid of a moustache and a matching beard on his chin. He dresses in the typical woven wools of the dwarves, thick and brightly dyed, and a fur cap generally covers his baldness. Ornaments of amber, ivory, and blue ice decorate his body, in particular a bone-white torc wraps around his neck.

The dwarf has a predilection for the zither, but his choice of weapons: a silver axe and a matching razor-sharp shield: mean it is an instrument for peacetime, rather than battle. Thus, in combat, he resorts to singing guttural songs that seem to echo the creaking of glaciers.

Backstory: Yermak singer of ice; fourth son of his mother; learned his craft from his grandfather, and the art of war from his uncle. He learned how to wield the axe and sing; he learned how to sing with his body so that his weapons cut deeper, and he learned how to fight with his words so that his foes were broken by them. The tent is but another battlefield, and song is but another sword. He travels; as a mercenary and witness, as behooves his people and his profession, doing grand deeds that his songs will commemorate, and seeing the happenings of the ice, so that they will not be forgotten. In time he will train his nieces in the ways of war; one song or stance every time he returns to his people; but not for some time yet.

---

Darab of the Mirrors a Human illusionist
Description: Darab rarely lets others see his body beyond the eyes, covering it with heavy blue wrapped robes and copper mirror-like bangles. His dark skin is incised with arcane sigils and scripture, which he uses to produce the spells that are his namesake: illusions that can be touched. He is accompanied by Azar his falcon familiar

Backstory: A merchant of illusions; of momentary respites and entertainments, Darab travels the waste bringing figments to life and providing shimmering pavilions and entertainments. He trained among those who knew the secrets of the mahandere and learned to take smoke and light and build things out of it; how to conjure flames and lightning, and make the unseen do as he wished. He now expands his knowledge and skills; visiting ruins and libraries, gaining fame, and aiding those in need.

Another question for ya. How are we doing ages? Is it years, or are we going to do the Game of Thrones thing and go with name day?

Erasmas
2013-05-21, 12:27 PM
SkorpionKing: Umm... just go with 'years' or seasons ("I have lived twenty winters"), or whatever.

Guigarci: My apologies, I thought it would be informative enough to give you guys stuff to start on.

Hettust (cold side): If you look at the map, Alfgard in close to the pole... so almost everything is "south" of it. I listed the places here with the map as being north, south, east, and west of one another as if this wasn't the case... for ease of referencing OOC. If this is too confusing, just let me know. So, you are on a bjoalding ship (a whaling ship) that has birthed from the port city of Alfgard and are heading south towards the Roalan Sea. In order to reach it, you will have to travel through Haggen's Straight. Each of you is searching for a place called Jarldagh (pronounced "yarl-dah"), a city that is built atop an iceberg that floats around on the currents within the Roalan Sea.
Summary-
You've been on a boat for four days.
If you couldn't pay, you're rowing when it's needed.
You're sailing south, towards a narrow straight.
It's cold and it's relatively dark (as always here).

Tantharra (hot side): The thri-kreens have killed two larval kaldivan (giant sandworms). There is so much to them that they are sharing the kill with the other races (you guys). Your various tribes have sent you with a caravan in order to collect and bring back meat, bone, teeth, skin, blood, glands, etc. - nothing goes to waste here. You have just arrived with your caravan and have set up your camp on the outskirts of the tent city that has sprung up outside of this cave entrance. You've been given "free time" to wander about/trade/etc. with the other races that have come before it's time to get to work.
Summary-
You're in a massive gorge.
You're here to gather food and essentials for your people.
You've set up camp (you'll be here for a few days).
You are free to move about and interact.

Again... from time to time, I will give what are intended to be gentle nudges, just to keep things in-line with the settings and whatnot. Please... do not take these as digs or nitpicking on your posts!

Tantharra:
The typical riding animal is the badoshii (riding lizard). There actually are not any camels.

Hettust:
There is no coin here. People barter trades for things.

Erasmas
2013-05-22, 11:50 PM
Yeah, sorry about that.
Again, this game was designed to be a cooperative storytelling 'experiment'. It was meant to be a back-and-forth, roll-with-the-punches, mainly-on-the-fly kinda thing.

I have a loose storyarch for you guys, and (as I said above) I will give little nudges here and there just to try for consistancy in the settings. But I want for you guys to contribute to the events of what's going on; even more than just necessarily the actions of your characters.

Erasmas
2013-05-25, 01:33 PM
Morning is a relative term... these people simply have a different way of measuring the times of day than we do. If you look in the post above for Tantharra, Karask moves throughout the day and marks the passing of the day and "night".

And dwarves; they're always overcompensating.

Erasmas

Hettust: Okay, since it was brought up... here's is some more information on Ulstagg's ship- It is this style of ship:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Erasmas/Arrath/Hettust/LongboatofUlstaggValdalfssonMap_zpsfad6c861.jpg

With the only difference being that it is a little "deeper" and has a hold below the top deck, which is accessible from a door in the side of the 'sterncastle' (where the drumming and the steering of the rudder would occur). Two ladders lead up to the sterncastle.
As for the people onboard... there are you 5, plus a total of three dozen crewman, and another half a dozen passengers - for a grand total of 47 souls.

Notes on Kaldivan

Wurm - Larva Stage

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Erasmas/Arrath/Tantharra/Creature-Kaldivan1Larva_zpsd41f5b45.jpg

Dragon - Adult Stage

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Erasmas/Arrath/Tantharra/Creature-Kaldivan2Wurm_zps10a92926.jpg

These gigantic subterranean animals burrow deep in the ground and travel swiftly; most of the sand on Arrath is credited to the actions of ancient kaldivan.
Tremorsense: they hunt by sensing seismic vibrations which are produced by sounds and movements (such as walking). They are ambush predators, preferring to sneak up on their quarry, though they have been known to chase prey with great determination. Because they are unable to tell the difference between edible and inedible vibration sources they adopt a policy of "eat first, ask questions later", swallowing whatever sets off their vibration sensors and regurgitating anything that is inedible. Inedible objects can be spat out with considerable force.
They possess immense physical strength.
They have indefinite lifespans, potentially living thousands of years. They begin as hatchlings (born in clutches deep underground and are nearly helpless for close to a decade, being brought food by the parent). They then enter the larva stage, also called “wurms” at this point, and set out into the desert. Somewhere around 100-200 years, they enter into a hibernation and undergo a metamorphosis (which itself can last centuries). They then emerge as adults, also called “dragons” at this point. They grow larger and larger, until the day that they finally die.
A dying kaldivan will always attempt to borrow as deep as possible.

Wurm (Larva)
Appearance/Anatomy

Resemble gigantic worms, with long, serpentine bodies
Measure up to 80 feet long and 20 feet in diameter
Weigh upwards of 20-40 tons
No eyes
Hide is thick and leathery, with a rough, pebbly texture (almost reptilian-looking)
Four-spined, split hinge-jaw structure for a mouth:
+Long serpentine prehensile tongue (some 20 feet long)
+Dozens of ‘throat teeth’ (called “paduva”; used primarily for rasping rocks and sand, and more than capable of eating anything; though solid rock causes them great discomfort)
+These sharp teeth of dead wurms are often used to produce weapons
Two rows of lateral spikes down their body (undulate to push it through the sand)
A semi-rigid internal structure

Behavior/Ecology

Ravenous appetites (carnivorous), always on the hunt for food
Indiscriminate eaters (even cannibalistic)
Will dig the sand out from under a hiding place until it collapses to get at prey
Water irritates and damages a wurm’s skin

Combat/Interaction

Are often captured, ridden, and even eaten
Create ‘nests’ like a silk worm; this material is mined for cloth
Venom Spray – digestive ‘acid’; cone attack (breath weapon)

Dragon (Adult)
Appearance/Anatomy

Resemble gigantic worms, with long, serpentine bodies with an armored head
Measure up to 1,000 feet long and 100 feet in diameter (legends of 5,000 ft lengths)
Weigh untold amounts
Small, weak eyes (known to be drawn to the color yellow)
Hide is thick armored plates (often used to produce armor and shields)
Massive mouth:
+Two large ‘horns’ on either side of mouth
+Rows upon rows of ‘beak-like’ teeth plates
+These plates, if found, are also often used to produce armor and shields
Body spikes covering their body (undulate to push it through the sand)
A flexible skeletal structure, similar to a snake

Behavior/Ecology

Slow metabolism (do not need to eat often, but will eat things in their path)
Indiscriminate eaters (even cannibalistic)
Possess memory and the ability to learn

Combat/Interaction

Worshiped as manifestations of the gods
Sometimes called the “Dragon of the Desert” or even "God Wurm"
Extremely dangerous (and thus greatly feared)
Can burrow faster than a human can run, though will not tunnel through solid rock
Sonic “Roar” – knocks prone, deafens, shatters fragile materials
Venom Spray – digestive ‘acid’; cone attack (breath weapon)

Awesome... stay diligent! I have one for my homebrew world tumbling around in my head and outlines and such. is it just me or are we borrowing things from pirates of the Caribbean? Not that it's a bad thing, but I was just wondering. Well I guess ghost ships pop up in other cultures as well. I've heard of a ghost ship that sails around the coast of Africa. Or at least the lower part anyways. I didn't really want to say tip, you know, just in case someone isn't thinking right. I know I'd laugh if someone said that to me at the right/wrong time.

haha, wikipedia's entry on "ghost ship" alone has 31 entries from all over the world.. Maybe PotC is stealing from Erasmas!! I think we have a lawsuit here!!

**Disclaimer** Some of them are just abandoned ships, not necessarily "ghost" ships..

theskorpionking
2013-05-30, 12:53 PM
no this one was actually a ghost ship. I think it would chase down other ships until they wrecked on the rocks. And Erasmas did say he wrote a few screenplays, maybe Disney did steal some of his ideas. Let's get a team of lawyers on it immediately.

Erasmas
2013-05-30, 01:04 PM
No, the idea was actually stolen from a real norse myth that I found in some obscure corner of the internet when doing research for my homebrew world. But... it fit pretty nicely here, so I threw it in. The part about taken prisoners and forcing them to serve as a part of the crew was, indeed, ripped off from PotC.

None of my screenplays are published (or even shopped around), so they definitely didn't steal anything from me.

So, not to keep going on the whole 'ripping old ideas off' thing going on I here, but I look at this and all I see is the movie 'Tremors'

Not that that's bad...

Creatures:
Badoshii (riding lizards – store water in necks like a camel’s hump)
Bornog (armadillo/rabbit like creatures - borrow; hunted for meat)
Kaldivan (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=15328334&postcount=31) (sand worms – mashup between Dune and Tremors; have both a larva stage and an adult stage)
Djinn'mahandere (genies/genasi, outsiders heavily tied to elemental plane of air)
Sala'mahandere (genies/genasi, outsiders heavily tied to elemental plane of fire)
Scorpions (normal, dire, giant)

Absolutely! It was 100% planned that way from the start. As soon as we decided on one half being totally desert, I thought... what would be a great threat that I haven't seen represented in D&D before? And Sandworms immediately sprang to mind - so I nabbed details about them from both Dune and Tremors and played "puzzle builder" with the pieces.

Okay, so, a description of Sonja..

Sonja stands 5.7", and is extremely slender and supple, with a dancers figure, lithe and graceful. Her black hair is long and straight, usually kept in an unadorned ponytail that falls to the small of her back. She typically wears upscale but quasi-revealing clothing (a remnant of her days as a pleasure slave). Her skin has been tatooed in it's entirety by a master tattooist to resemble fire. In other words, her skin is a base color of deep red, with abstracted "flames" in various appropriate colors swirled and striated in a generally pleasing pattern to the eye. She has good taste, so her clothing tends to enhance rather than detract from her unique look, and she accessorizes very well. Today she happens to be wearing delicate leather sandals, and a light colored and clingy "robe" for lack of a better word, with strategic cutouts and slits to suggest rather than display. Her manner is direct and cynical most of the time, usually in a playful or lighthearted manner, but.. ahem.. she can turn on the charm and make men melt

Does that help?

Lentrax

Oh yes, one thing I forgot to mention.. It would likely be difficult to miss the flame (about the size of a chess piece) that apparently "lives" on Sonja. It apparently doesn't burn her or her clothing somehow, but if you look, it's always somewhere on her person, and she can occasionally be seen talking to it.

I was maybe thinking maybe this for him tomis (http://s1340.photobucket.com/editor?image=http%3A//i1340.photobucket.com/albums/o721/theskorpionking/00031335_zps3b9c4e20.jpg%3Ft%3D1371058296&detailUrl=http://s1340.photobucket.com/user/theskorpionking/media/00031335_zps3b9c4e20.jpg.html?filters[media%5Ftype]=image&sort=3&o=0) It kinda fits since its from the same movie that I got the pic for Alia.

And I was going to try and rack my brain for Gemma-look-alikes who were slightly older, but that picture of her looks like an older/slightly different person anyways that shares the same genes.

For Tomis... yeah, I thought Atreyu might work. But I can certainly swap it out for the one that you provided! Gimme two shakes.

As for the tents (got ninja'd): Since there are no plants to speak of, the only real lighter "fabric" is silk... made from kaldivans. But it wouldn't be able to block out the light, which would make it hard to sleep during the "night"... and it wouldn't be able to block out enough of the heat during the Scorch.

I apologize everyone! A plague hit my household last week and everyone got it. I missed four days of work; the threat of possible pneumonia looming overhead (since the person we all got it from ended up with it). My brain was swimming in snot... so thinking straight was not a strong point and I lacked the energy to force anything relevant and/or concrete for the games!

However, I am back in the saddle again and am making the rounds presently!

Okay, gaming can be done with or without drinking. Family.. with or without.. friends.. with or without.. But by gosh, when you shoot off fireworks, there MUST BE BOOZE!!

I'll see about getting a post up tomorrow. I'll probably have Berg grab her warhammer and follow some of the crew out on the ice. Just because she's a frost giant and they're gonna be facing some frost giants, that doesn't mean that she has to like 'em.

Pife, was Sonja treating Alia like a child? Because she has seen 17 summers and she will make certain that you know that. Or was she mostly talking to Tomis, since he is the youngest? Or am I just confused?

pife
2013-07-10, 01:39 PM
She was trying to deflect the attention of the two children from the horror of the nearby dead body and amuse them until someone took it away. She would have been referring to both children, but especially the younger. If the older child was nearly an adult, my concern would still exist, but it would be moderated.

Sonja wasn't trying to be condescending. (Plus, an ice cold rock in the middle of the blazing desert ought to amuse anyone, adult or child).

Less from me?
Would you guys prefer to have more structure (in the way of character sheets and rolls and whatnot)?

Why in hell does Sonic now offer a Peanut Butter & Bacon Milkshake?
Am I asking too many questions?

Hettust is slow for me because I really don't have a goal right now, so I'm not sure what I should be doing.

Tantharra, has been mostly I think because we aren't terribly familiar with a straight free-form rpg.

I'm actually enjoying the dieless aspect of the game. Maybe we could open the recruitment thread and see if anyone is interested in playing. I think we need a little nudge from you every now and then, like you've been doing. as for your other questions. The dynamic duo always escape in time, unless its a two parter. Peanut butter & bacon, no thanks. that's just gross. And yeah, maybe. I'm also glad that your son is doing better.

pife
2013-08-08, 01:01 PM
First off, there are never too many questions.. We likes questions!!

Personally, for me.. I think it's that I'm new to this style of gaming. I've never "not" had a character sheet before, and I've never played diceless. (the jury is still out for me on whether I like the diceless aspect). I know that under normal circumstances, I know a LOT about my characters, far beyond what's on the sheet. I know their history, their preferences, bad habits, weaknesses, etc. So far, I haven't been able to "bond" with these characters, and I'm not sure why. It certainly isn't the lack of a character sheet, because "allergic to almonds" has never been on my character sheet, but I've had a character that was..

Again, for me, if we are going to be this "freeform", then I would prefer to have significantly more detail, and by extension, interaction from the DM. Since there is no... (structure is the wrong word, but it will have to do) in place for either character or action, I am relying more on "facts" than "instinct". This is why I have been quieter here than in most games. I don't yet have an instinct for these characters, or the game world, and "facts" have been fairly sparse. Also, being a "rules-oriented" guy, I'm having difficulty determining what I CAN do. I know that you had mentioned at one point to consider it equivalent to a 5th-6th level character (I believe), but the absence of mandatory structure has forced me to assume structure on my own. I have felt almost "guilty" for "assuming" I could do something, and have been reticent to suggest actions for fear that you would either a) shrug and think, "whatever, I can undo that", or b) stop me midstream and say "you can't do that", which would make me feel like I was taking advantage of the game.

So, long rambling explanation aside.. I think that I could very much enjoy both games. Most of the problem is completely mine, I believe, due to my lack of exposure to this type of game. The only "request" I could make is more detail in the short term until I get my bearings, as it were. (more of the "why", "where" and "how" of of things, specifically, not necessarily the "what".)

Erasmas
2013-08-08, 05:00 PM
Alright, thank you everybody for the feedback! I did start a re-recruitment thread and put the word out in another diceless game that I am playing in. So, maybe we'll get some fresh blood pumping through these games!

Specific Things That Were Brought Up:
Hettust not having a goal - Fair enough. You guys do have a destination, but that is probably not a strong enough motivation. I have stuff planned for whenever you get there pertaining to that, but I will work on giving you guys more stuff to "work towards" in the interim.
Peanut Butter = delicious. Bacon = delicious. Milkshakes = delicious. The three combined = what one might vomit up after a night of binge drinking.
Going back to dice - Glad to hear that you guys aren't wanting to wholeheartedly abandon the diceless thing quite yet! I am convinced that we can make it work. This "system" is designed more around the idea of telling a cooperative narrative (which is what it started out as). You guys have pretty much all of the notes that I have on Arrath thus far... it is pretty unexplored and undefined. I have a clear(-ish) idea of what belongs in the world and what doesn't and that is more what I am doing when I'm nitpicking certain aspects of your posts when I do. Think of me as the bumpers that go in the gutters when you bowl... I'm just trying to keep things heading in the right direction with a gentle nudge here and there. I am wanting for you guys to help fill in all of those details along the way as we figure them out together! I work better as a storyteller if there is a healthy level of improvisation to the unfolding of it all and it keeps it much more exciting to me than to simply watch you guys creep along between points on a bulleted list.
World information - Because of the above mentioned reasons, I do not have a massive amount of information to provide you guys upfront. I apologize if that is what you would prefer, but the simple fact of the matter is... it doesn't exist yet. More what I am looking for is for you guys to ask me pointed questions here in the OOC thread, so that I can address the specific thing that you need to know about, fine tune the information to make it fit just right into "the vision", and then make it concrete and a permanent part of the world!
What can you do with a post - Again, if you think it is something that your character would/could/should be able to do... either post it or ask! The worst that will happen is that I will ask you to adjust something for continuity sake. I want you guys to care about this story more than just your character's actions and reactions... I want you to care about (and have input into) how an NPC responds, what secrets lie within a different character's magic item, to appreciate how harsh these environments are like you were creating the setting yourself! Don't be afraid to throw a temporary hardship at your own character any more than you would a character you were writing for in a novel. The only real "boundaries" that I ask is that you don't post direct actions for each other's characters or do things for NPCs that are out of character (such as the sultan handing you the keys to his palace). Aside from that, keep the 5th level power equivalent in mind when you are giving your character/items abilities and all should be good! I promise... I won't let you take advantage of me and the game (at least, not too much. :smalltongue:

Here are my new characters!

Arnyor Uhtredsen - Human Warden of Wothok:

http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/172/3/d/primitive_knight_by_palelonginus-d3jlaa3.jpg
Akeperenquay ("Great is the form of Quay") - Dwarf Scribe:

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/150/0/3/egyptian_by_greykitty-d672hzu.jpg
To elaborate, I envision Arnyor as a religious warrior, very similar to a paladin. The implication from what I've read seems to be that the celestial bodies are gods, and so, Wardens seek to emulate Wothok's vigilance by protecting the people from threats, whether marauding animals or raiders.

Ake (I figure it won't be long before people shorten that long name of his) would be a minor noble among his people, like how the scribes of Ancient Egypt were.

EDIT: I altered Arnyor to reflect the actual deity of the moon, Hergernoth. The fact that he's also in charge of lightning and stuff makes him even cooler!

2013-08-21, 02:29 AM
Hey...I'm wondering what the Wardens should be serving. It's mentioned that Hergernoth is a god of the moon, and that Wothok is the watching moon.

So...does that mean Hergernoth's purview extends to vigilance? Are Hergernoth and Wothok separate entities?

The sort of code I'm trying to emphasize with Arnyor is that the Wardens are sort of knights-errant. They wander Hettust administering justice (according to their code anyway) and protecting people from monsters and hostile animals, whether alone like Arnyor, or in groups. While most people will welcome a Warden because they're skilled warriors with the ability to perform minor magics, and have a reputation for fairness and impartiality, they also inspire fear and suspicion because some may view them as meddlers or as undermining their traditions, as not all communities on Hettust live by the same rules.

For example, a community that punishes a builder whose faulty construction kills the son of its owner by killing the builder's son would be frustrated by a Warden who demands that instead the builder be exiled, imprisoned or forced to pay the owner in service, or executed himself, because according to the Warden, the son of the builder is not involved in the matter, and an eye for an eye isn't justice, but vengeance. Plus there are rumors of ex-Wardens who take over communities and force people to obey their laws, or who abandon the code and turn to banditry. The Wardens themselves voiciferously deny this, claiming any who abandon the code by committing an injustice are stripped of their powers by their patron (Hergernor or Wothok).

Also, I have a badass picture I'd like to represent them:

http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs34/f/2008/297/f/3/Watchmen_by_Shockbolt.jpg

Erasmas
2013-08-21, 12:32 PM
That is an awesome pic! Very nice indeed.
:smallwink:

I am totally down with the idea of the Wardens fulfilling that kind of a role. A great addition to that part of the world and very fitting for the setting. They should be a rare occurrence though... as most in Hettust have a strong "keep to yourselves and care for your clan" kind of mentality, so a sense of world order or unification is incredibly foreign to most people. Which is nice, because that makes their role even more unique and threatening to those that do not understand or agree with it!

As for the Hergernoth/Wothok topic - Hergernoth is a god, Wothok is... on a lesser level. Maybe a demi-god or just an entity. How about this (I like this idea): Hergernoth is seen as a high-king, the moon and its powers, among other things in the sky, are his domain. Wothok is the "knight-errant/thane" entity that serves Hergernoth and watches over the world. The moon itself is believed to be the light of his lantern as he patrols the sky for his king.

Does that work?

Archpaladin Zousha
2013-08-21, 12:59 PM
Yes! I'll switch it back to Wothok to reinforce the Wardens' more servant-like mentality.

I also had another idea. The Wardens have a derogatory nickname. When someone doesn't respect a Warden, they'll derisively refer to them as a "Karling." The Wardens were founded by a warrior named Karls, and while some saw him as a hero, others saw him as a bully. But his legacy lives on in the Warden's Code, and they strive to emulate his great deeds. To call a Warden a Karling is to suggest they worship Karls, a man, to the detriment of Wothok, a god. To suggest they're arrogant idolators, and that their code is the arbitrary whims of a brutish warmonger. To the pious Wardens, who believe they derive their powers from Wothok's favor and that Karls was a visionary hero, this is a grave insult to their god and their founder. It can incite younger, more hot-headed Wardens to violence, and even older ones will refuse to speak to someone who calls them a Karling except in the most dire circumstances.

Erasmas, I was wondering how we would deal with Sira and Tomis. I expect that the shopping endeavor will end soon. Maybe Alia and Sira could get into an argument and we could have Alia run off and then join the others for the drinks Sonja promised. Or if you have any ideas I'm open to them.

Erasmas
2013-08-26, 11:29 AM
A big fight could work and would be fitting for how their relationship has been depicted thus far. And it definitely seems like Alia is at that age of rebellion and budding independence, so striking out "on her own" to show Sira that she isn't a little girl anymore would make a good deal of sense.

Or we could go the route of most adventurers and have some cataclysmic event occur, thus propelling our young heroine to uproot and seek solace in the pursuit of gold and glory.
:smalltongue:

theskorpionking
2013-08-26, 11:38 AM
How cataclysmic? I don't think I'd want them to die, they could be used at a later time, for something. I think that Sira should find out about the medallion maybe say something like "you had no right to take that. What until mother hears of this." then alia would say something like, "if you tell mother she'll tell the order blah blah blah." Something to that effect, then she runs off, grabbing her things. then she sets off to find Sonja and the others.

Erasmas
2013-08-26, 11:56 AM
I was honestly just teasing about that. Just alluding to the fact that the majority of adventurers usually have someone in their backstory meeting a grizzly end.

But, I think with what I just posted in the IC and with Sira finding out about the medallion... that we can definitely arrange for a reason to get you out on the road with the rest of them.

Shameless plug ahead!

I am now recruiting for a new modern game that will take place on a Prison Island! It will be filled with 1980's "future" camp, homages, action, guns, car chases, sex, drugs, and rock & roll! If you're interested, please check out Acid Reign (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=15899642#post15899642)!

Typically, it isn't okay to take an action for someone else's character... but since he actually posted that that's what Akeperenquay was doing, this is more of a resolution of a stated action, so it isn't that big of a deal.

Archpaladin Zousha
2013-09-14, 12:19 AM
I didn't say Akeperenquay DID tackle the guy. I said he was going to TRY to. I wanted to leave it open as to whether or not it'd work or if someone closer would deal with him before he ran up to them.

I also received word from Skorpion that he will be taking a hiatus of unspecified time as well. He says that he will likely be back, but that does (for the time being) put us down two characters from both halves. So, that leaves us with Pife, Zousha, and Glitch on the Tantharra side and only Pife and Zousha on the Hettust side.

While I admit that I was uncomfortable in the beginning with the diceless/characterless nature of the game, it's definitely getting easier, and the characters/setting are very interesting.

And, going forward, I can assure you that my posts will be more regular, if that helps, haha..

Erasmas
2013-10-07, 12:07 PM
Glitch: So, am I reading your post correctly? You are heading back towards the tent encampment... or are you leaving and heading back to whatever city you came from?

Pife: Likewise, are you intending on heading to the Jarl's place with Arnyor first, or are you going straight to the lodge?

pife
2013-10-07, 12:34 PM
I think I need to sit down and reread the entire thread, because I really have no idea what we're doing (in either campaign, to be honest Hettust/Tantharra). I've been hoping it would start making more sense, but my characters are basically just rolling along because I haven't got a clue what we're supposed to be doing.

Erasmas
2013-10-07, 12:39 PM
:smalleek:

Fair enough.

Archpaladin Zousha
2013-10-07, 12:44 PM
I've been keeping track, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm not being too cohesive. In Tantharra, Akeperenquay feels too bland and is sort of just following the group along, while in Hettust, Arnyor's almost got TOO MUCH personality with all the Warden stuff I've written in and he's going off and doin' his own thing rather than building bonds with the group.

Reality Glitch
2013-10-07, 01:57 PM
Glitch: So, am I reading your post correctly? You are heading back towards the tent encampment... or are you leaving and heading back to whatever city you came from? The former.

Erasmas
2013-10-07, 02:19 PM
I am enjoying the stuff with Arnyor... it gives me something to build off of. I kind of view this as a "keep the ball off of the ground" kind of game - I hit the ball up, but shouldn't be able to hit it again until at least one other person has, and we try and see how long we can keep it up without dropping it.

So, I guess the question is then - what is it that you guys need/would like to see more of from me?

Reality Glitch
2013-10-07, 06:22 PM
I'm not sure if it's something that can be consciously done on your end, it could be my problem, but I would like the events IC to be easier to keep tract of. And for people to actually post.

Erasmas
2013-10-07, 06:29 PM
I would like the events IC to be easier to keep tract of.

Is there a recommendation that you might have that would facilitate this? I am uncertain as to why reviewing previous posts is proving to be more ineffective than it would be in any other game thread.

And for people to actually post.

Well in Tantharra, there are only currently the three of you playing. And, to be fair, Pife and Zousha have both been posting quite a bit.

Reality Glitch
2013-10-07, 06:35 PM
To the first: What about the posts w/ the fancy colored line on them.

To the second: there hasn't been a post in two days, and before I posted they where updating once to twice a day.

Erasmas
2013-10-08, 10:43 AM
Well, the reason I use those lines is when the characters are separated and/or I have something specific that addresses characters individually or in smaller groups. Now that Psi'Phi has gone his own way... that will be happening again (for however long that lasts). I am still uncertain as to how this particular thing lacking causes confusion as to what is going on within the game, however. Could you please enlighten me?

There reason that there hasn't been a post in two days was because it was the weekend. I hardly ever post on the weekends, and that goes for all of my games. There have been several points where there was no post from you for over a week. Throughout those times, I have kept your character along but have not 'taken control' of his interaction because I only do that with a PC if I am fairly certain that the player isn't coming back. But in order to have me engage your character more... I honestly need more from you to build off of. Knowing that your character is going back to the encampment is fine, but that doesn't let me know what goal he has in mind for once he arrives. If, for example, you tell me that he intends on trying to sneak into a merchant's tent and see what he can steal... that gives me something to run Psi'Phi through! if you tell me that he is going to head back and ask questions about the man who perished during the Scorch... then I can open a dialogue between him and some NPCs.

Does this make sense?

Erasmas
2013-10-08, 11:40 AM

Sonja pouts prettily.. Oh, she says, obviously disappointed. I know that when I go to market for meat, the last thing on the butcher's cart is what everyone else turned down.. What price did you have in mind, and what condition is the beast in? Perhaps I've arrived too late to mount anything worth my time.

Sonja's plan is to flirt her way to a better deal, but innuendo and the occasional batted eye are as far as it will go.

Not really, other than just a woman who will pay handsomely for the furs, then, I dunno, she makes clothing and other such things with them. Other than that you can go wild with her. I suppose she could possible be an elf or perhaps even a half-giant (if there is such a thing in your world) And maybe she has some kind of ties with Berg's family. Okay, now you can go wild with her.

Edit: thanks for clearing the Alia/Sonja thing. I didn't really want Alia to be that kind of girl.

The "Good Idea" response is Psi'Phi's, but the narrator says it because Psi'Phi isn't suppose to let on that he can hear him.

Reality Glitch

I'm not trying to be alone, that's coincidence. May the mother insist on me accompanying her to her child. Maybe as insurance that I'm not lying.

theskorpionking
2013-11-13, 01:32 PM
Sira is Alia's older sister, not her mother. How exactly does the book that Psi'Phi gave Sira work? Would Alia feel anything when she uses it? For instance, would she feel a tingling or something similar? And I can't believe someone actually asked about the Order, now I have to make up something really grand for them. Or not, I think I'm just going to make them a group of religious zealots out to trick the weak minded people out of money.

Erasmas
2013-11-13, 01:35 PM
That's the beauty of this kind of game... you are free to go with it and take it (pretty much) wherever you want! I'll let you know if it messes with anything else that I have planned or needs any tweaking for subject or tone, but just wing it.

theskorpionking
2013-11-13, 01:56 PM
No I think that's exactly how the Order is gonna work. They use the sand shapers to make sand copies of people's loved ones, and since sand can't talk, the monks (can't think of anything better right now) then make up things to tell the families. They of course have done their research on the families, but they kinda milk it to get more money from them. Basically they take advantage of the people and Alia doesn't like it.

Erasmas
2013-11-13, 02:26 PM
Works for me!

theskorpionking
2013-11-14, 11:56 AM
I hoped that made sense. I kinda got side railed on a few ideas, but I think it came out alright in the end.

Erasmas
2013-11-14, 12:39 PM
No, I think that plays out perfectly. I think that they need a name (even if they refer to themselves only as "The Order", others would surely have a more descriptive name for them) - "The Order of Kattashan" or something.

theskorpionking
2013-11-14, 12:52 PM
Maybe the dwarves have a scroll on them. I feel that having them only known as the Order makes them feel very ominous. But if you want them to have a name, go for it. I really don't think I could come up with something good. Who knows maybe they could have a longer reach than even Alia would know about. Maybe they're the ones who sent the assassin after Sonja. Speaking of Sonja, any word from Pife?

Erasmas
2013-11-14, 01:28 PM
Perhaps. My thought on the matter is that there are probably a lot of "The Order"s, scattered around the (fairly un-unified) peoples of this hemisphere. So, likely, Alia only knows them as "The Order" and their full name simply carries an additional identifying name just outside of your tribe and the immediate area?

On Pife:
I actually know Pife in RL now (he has become a part of my gaming group), since meeting him here on the Playground. He has to take a break from the forum for a bit because of some issues with life/work right now that are eating up all of his free time and energy. As far as I know, he does plan to return... though it will likely be at least mid-December or so.
