View Full Version : what builds have you had the most fun with? not necessarily optimized, just fun.

Most fun I have had started as a whisper gnome diviner. Started on spur of the moment after old party mostly died. DM said you got 30 minutes to make 1st lvl character. I had just read the batman wizard guide and went that route. Dropped evocation, wich other players couldn't believe. Went 7 lvls diviner, and saw shadow craft mage. I saw I qualified even though I didn't take the optimal path. I wasn't loosing any caster lvls, so I figured why not. Went all five lvls scm and back to diviner for 2 lvls. Just now entering arch mage. I know it is not the optimal build, but this character has just been fun. Now everyone knows evocation is not needed. I played strait batman from the start concentrating on battlefield control, save or suck, and summons. I have more fun with this character than any other. Build so far diviner 7/ scm 5/ diviner 2/ archmage 1

i played this only briefly, in a world that had a negative attitude towards arcane casters: a young noble woman who got stuck in an adventure. i used the warlock build for her, and played it as emerging "curse" she was undergoing, and trying to hide. her powers were cued to emotional states or occurrences. for example, at first she could summon spiders and strange insect when she was terrified or disgusted, going away only when she calmed down. later on things would blow up (the shatter like evocation) when ever she sneezed (it was winter, cold and out side, it happened a lot) which was hilarious. didn't get to use her eldritch blast in the short game (she hid it). would love to play her again.

straight warlock, though only up to 3/4 level i think... :smalltongue:

I do some really goofy stuff when I get bored with a game. One thing I like to do is pick up a bunch of Pearls of Power II and spam cast Heroics during my Buffing period, effectively making me a different fighter every fight.

Builds Builds Builds II has a bunch of my fun builds posted. I have a Changeling DivineMinion/MasterofManyForms/Chameleon list there. When you wildshape into a form, you get the creature's Ex, and you can use your floating Chamelon feat to pick up Assume Supernatural. Then you can use your Focus to fill in other abilities.

Phobos Venomcry (http://www.thetangledweb.net/forums/profiler/view_char.php?cid=66300) is a submission I am making for a PbP game. He is built around having a lot of goofy option for combat.

I had a lot of fun with a scout 4 / Ranger 6 build taking swift hunter. For the lolz I was a half elf (it was pretty fun). My whole point of existence was pulling shenanigans out, combining items, playing batman and ALWAYS having a plan B and an escape route.

It was a really fun character to play.

Then the whole party switched to spell casters. And it was... annoying :smallannoyed:

I switched to a bamboo spirit folk archivist 2 / wizard / mystic theurge x / arcane hierophant y and focused in buffs and it was really fun meleeing with the familiar companion.

i usually play paladins (until i'm banned that class... it's a running gag now) to make survival horror dm's cry. however, the most fun i've ever had was the exact opposite:

WHFRP:

chameleon skink (night runner profile) using a blowgun, 1/3 the wounds of the rest of the party, and you needed a 15 or less on d100 to see me. (think active camo in halo, you're not far from the effect).
fast. deadshot. crazy loyal to its mommy and his amigo. prehensile tail. learned to speak estalian and play cards wagering a ham at the same time. used a halfling as a dartboard. got roaring drunk with a glass of weak wine. melted a guy's arm with a dart. sent by the gods (for what it's worth, i don't think they anticipated my actions). immune to aging, sickness, and poisons. amphibian. living in a city where if i'm seen, i'm dead meat. considered by the rest of the party as the emergency rations.

i loved playing him, and thought that he'd been retired seeing as the party imploded irl. i worked so hard to convince everyone that this campaign was too crazy to stop now, i got it back on track one year later! it even earned me my first fate point!

it's real tough to play (11 wounds, if i wear armor i'm detectable), but oh so gratifying having a halfling yelp and see a dart in his but without knowing where it came from:smallbiggrin:
oh, and sniping smugglers from underwater is totally worth the added difficulty of aiming!

I had a lot of fun with Gruntsmash - Orc Titan Mauler Barbarian in Pathfinder. He was incredibly cliche - 5 Int, 6 Wis, 5 Cha with physical scores through the roof. He dual-wielded Huge warhammers. His mental "crutch" was a sentient Ioun Stone named George that kept him from making stupid decisions.

He liked to beat enemies to death with their kin sometimes.

He died by taking wisdom damage during a rage, falling unconscious and losing all of his extra rage Hit Points, which took him down below negative whatever so that he basically became so stupid that he fell over and died on the spot.

My favorite character ever was a barbarian/cleric of Kord. We started at 1st level and I took a cleric level with full intention on being fully plated and shield with fighter levels. For the 1st 3 levels that I took cleric the DM almost never missed me with his attacks - not cheese, just rolled well against me. I got fed up with the speed reduction of plate and only wore a chain shirt, picked up a greatsword, realized I could cast enlarge person as a domain spell - fun ensued.

It led me to rename enlarge person to "12 feet of steel." The best part was when we were playing in the local shop all the uber-gamers would freak out when I would say I was casting the spell and look frantically thru books to find it. The luck domain saved the character more times than I can count, it allowed me to take the chance and Power Attack for everything.

One of my favorites was an assassin type. I can't remember by exact build right now, but the great part was the his party didn't learn of his abilities until we got into the final BBEG's strong hold.

Up until then he was manly the scout/trap monkey. In combat he had a handy haversack full of alchemical items, scrolls, and wands that served to help get the party beatsticks out of trouble and make some BFC.

As soon as we got into the first fight in the stronghold, and he was nearly killed...well he said screw the cover story. He activated the bracelet of arming to change all of his gear and the MW tools he had for disguising himself to his assassination ones.

Well blood splattered walls and floors later, he looked to the party and smirked. The resulting yelling match that ensued was hilarious. They started bringing up mysterious killings, corpses found near camp, all the times we almost died, and screaming about how if he hadn't hid his abilities it could have all been avoided.

It was good times. Now he wasn't a useless lump in combat, but I didn't use him near his full potential before then.

any chance someone's got an idea on how to create a multiverse to include all these guys into one epic team?

12 feet of steel, an invisible sniper, an assassin who throws subtlety to the winds, a barbarian and his pet rock, a shunned caster, a half-elf batman, a mailman, and a diviner all coming together across time and space to defeat the ultimate evil: the dm's wrath!

the expendables pen and paper style!

My favorite was a one-off session where we all rolled up core PCs, the only rule was your race and class COULDN'T match.

My Halfling berserker adventured along with a dwarven bard, a dwarven sorcerer, a half-orc monk, and a half-orc druid. All were incredibly fun.

my gaming buddy (and WHF dm) rolled up a half-ork monk once. apparently, zen is the way to roleplay it. a hefty strength bonus helps to enforce zen, apparently.

in the PF campaign i'm dm'ing, my most experienced player and i coached the tank of the team to make a viable halfling berserker. so far has broken 3 oak barrels, dock planks, and a toilet (by being flung into them), and has scragged 6 guys with no hp loss. it's unorthodox, but quite viable (and too much fun to fling him into furniture and passing objects:smallbiggrin:)

I really enjoyed an Eldritch Disciple build that I ran a while back. He would fly above the battlefield sniping at targets up to 250 ft away and when needed could toss a healing blast at an ally the same distance. Too bad about that Bodak - I only missed the save by a couple of points. :smallfrown:

[PF + 3.5] Swiss Army Sorcerer
The build is Pathfinder, the feat and item selection (not critical to the build at all) is 3.5.
I'm currently playing it, I am extremely flexible. Sorcerer 9/Cyphermage 4, I can cast 6th Level Wiz/Sorc spells and 5th Level Spells from anything Divine or anything that ends up on a Domain list.

I rolled up a Psychic Rogue prior to writing my guide for them; it was really nice feeling like a rogue (a secret agent, really) that could actually do cool stuff besides hide and SA. Best of all is that I never felt like I had to hold back to avoid overshadowing anyone.

PF Build, the Batman Ninja. Full level 8 build can be found here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14444553&postcount=8). Basically just exploits various feats that enhance sneak attack on nonlethal attacks to one-hit KO just about anything not outright immune to SA or nonlethal damage, and had an "Adventurer's Sash" full of various alchemical substances and other weapons for when "hit it till it falls down" wasn't a viable strategy. Even had a grapple gun (Hand crossbow with a Grappling Bolt from Adventurer's Armory book).

Played this character in PFS games, was an absolute blast. Got to the point where people would start singing the 60s Batman theme song when I sat down at the table

I enjoyed playing my paladin very much. While he started only with int 9, he had great wisdom and was usualy voice of reason in our party. Never tried to enforce his code on party which was good, so unlike our other paladin he actualy lived (and wasn't sacrificed to please devil).:smalltongue: Made me happy that party actualy cared about me a bit (apart from the player whose paladin was killed prior to my coming to the party, his bard ploted against me a lot and once he tried to kill me in sleep he got smited and left group). Was poor humble guy, trying to avoid any sins and sacrificing himself for greater good. Survived even being burned by red dragon (stabilized at -9) and outlived half of party who froze to death in blizzard. Still got his char sheet hidden.

probably my favorite build was my very first one. I used a DM-breed race of wolfmen who basically just got a speed of 40. He was a 3.5 barbarian, so i had a base lands speed of 50ft, a 18 str, and a 17 con. He used a greatclub with power attack, but since it was my first chara i never knew what rage was so he never raged.

Because of great rolls, he ended up owning everything with PA and Cleave, so I went Barb1/fighter2/barb8, and took the Run feat and Endurance feat for shiz-and-giggles. He was just as fast on land as the parties horses and could run either just as long or longer then them.

One mission was basically a wizard in a room in the middle of a small trapped labyrinth, who was supposed to randomly send summoned monsters into the labyrinth to find and fight us. After carefully counting, I realized that with a run action, moving 250ft, I could base the wizard. I won Init, proceeded to run through the labyrith, managing to scrap by all my saves, and based the poor little wizard. He went next, tried to cast a spell, and i PA AOO'd him into the negatives.

My DM made me make a different character.

Some of his other high lights were: Knee-capping a giant flaming woman (not a fire giant), slapping a blue dragon toothless with his Spiked Gaunlets, and then getting drunk with our parties drunken master, start a city-wide bar fight, and proceeded to destroy and convert all the drunken brawlers into thinking he was a god while the Drunken Master was his High Priest.

My most memorable and fun chars\builds are all from back in the AD&D 2e era:

One of my first chars ever was made before we really understood how the rules worked: A half-elf fighter/mage. He wore a large hooded red cloak with flame and fire ornaments along all the edges. He wore a studded leather armour and used a bastard sword in melee (2h). He focused mainly (duh!) on fire based spells. He also had fiery red braided hair, and a red flame tattoo covering his left cheek, eye and brow. It was alot of fun, but was pretty illegal rules wise.
Another fun char was also a very early creation - a Thief that used whip and daggers. He was your stereotypical thief thief. Stole things, backstabbed and wore a large black cloak. :smalltongue:
Another early char was a grumpy middle-aged fighter (barbarian flavoured) with a wolfskin cape, a glaive and also bastard sword. Most memorable for the fun campaign rather than the char itself. He was too serious and grumpy to be much "fun". :smallwink:

Alot of my D&D 3.0\5 chars has been in rather short lived campaings so none of them has been around long enough to really evolve into something memorable and fun. I guess a bunch of vague char concepts from AD&D 2e wasn't very useful to this thread, but i still felt like posting about my nostalgia.

Apsu - Sorc 6 / Incantrix 10 (AKA - the postman)

8 times a day, could deal 720 damage with metamagic stupidity. Two in the morning, two in the afternoon, two at night and two spare. Would burn himself up and spend the rest of the fight sat against the wall, watching the fight, throwing an aiding spell when necessary.

Crowning moments - Killed three thri-keen and a player with 720ft of airship anchor chain. Wiped a room of mummys (18 in total) and the same player again with a 720 damage enhanced, empowered, acidic admixtured, twin spelled, maximised fireball. I don't remember ever rolling for damage after level 12...

Mmm. In an E6 game, using the rules where you can buy off LA by having lowered Point Buy, a Mineral Warrior Goliath Fighter, using a Large Shield, being Lawful Good, and taking the Dungeoncrasher ACFs. Though I used Goliath mechanically, in-game it was basically Half-Giant, and he was an estranged guy from some crazy Drow slavery thing that ended up living in a human settlement, being raised by the local militia. They called him Mr Domino. Got to be the tanky tank for the rest of the PCs (we actually agreed to lower the DR from Mineral Warrior, since at low levels it is quite obscene), and also send people flying every which way while hitting like a truck, in addition to serving as the relative moral compass. Fun times.

There was also Taretha Voidstrider, a young Tiefling Nomad Psion who went into Maverick Voidshaper, a Dreamscarred Press class that focused on increasing psychoportation distance and effects. It was basically a little girl that played games with the battlefield, switching people around, skipping some people half a minute into the future, and teleporting other people over wells.

Probably some others, but those are the first two that really come to mind as fun to play.

I've had alot of fun with my asimar healer. Ended up playing her from levels 10 through 20.

I'm currently having alot of fun with my (somewhat poorly optimized) ultimate magus build (currently a wiz 5/beguiler 1.) He's my first attempt at a believable evil character (as opposed to a stupid evil character, or a character that was evil in name only, of which I've had one each.)

I rarely get to play rather than DM, and when I do play I rarely get to be anything other than party support, but I did have two non-support PCs I really liked, both in Eberron.

WhisperknifeI had an assassin-ish PC codenamed Whisperknife (the other PCs never did discover his real name) who worked for the Trust and was quite fun to play. Personality-wise, he was a quietly confident professional who dressed entirely in gray and couldn't resist taunting his victims and hiding in plain sight--when the party decided to rob and assassinate a bunch of important people during a lightning rail trip (they needed to frame some airship pirates; long story), everyone else disguised themselves or came in via airship, but Whisperknife bought a ticket in the same car as the important people and went as himself, sitting there reading the newspaper and chatting about the dangers of lightning rail robberies until the attack happened.

He tended to regale those he trusted (including all of the PCs except the party scout, with whom he had an unpleasant history) with stories about old jobs, and improvising those was always fun: "Yes, that part of Aundair is always lovely this time of year, particularly right around midsummer when the apple trees--oh, yes, I have indeed been there before, haven't I told you? Well, it was the summer of '73, you see, and I was assembling my crossbow in the orchard and poisoning all the bolts while I waited for my target...."

Mechanically, he was an interesting (and highly-optimized) mix of scout, binder, swordsage and a few other classes, with some bloodlines and templates thrown in. His two main strengths were, unsurprisingly, stealth and assassination: his stealth skills were extremely high and he had Darkstalker, Hide in Plain Sight, and such to cover all eventualities, so he didn't "roll Hide and Move Silently," he just "went into stealth mode;" while he was fairly wimpy in a stand-up fight, when able to strike from stealth he was able to one-shot one of these guys (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/neothelid.htm) at level 9 or 10, I forget which.

Gil Vastra, Reporter Extraordinaire! As a bit of a change from optimizing combat monsters and support casters, I decided to do something a bit more Indiana Jones-ish for one game and made a more academically-inclined adventurer. Gil was a reporter for the Korranberg Chronicle's Arts and Culture section, so to get more hands-on with ancient relics and meet plenty of famous people he decided to join a mercenary group as an embedded reporter and write about their exploits for a while.

I was the party cartographer and note-taker for that game, so I actually had a good reason to ask questions of the DM and NPCs to clarify the scene, and I wrote up little newspaper articles for the Chronicle after each session. He tended to make snarky comments on their current predicaments by suggesting good headlines for the stories that would result from the party's exploits, and would occasionally indulge in film noir-style voiceovers.

This was a gestalt game, so one side of Gil's build was all skills, all the time (factotum, bard with bardic knack, uncanny trickster, etc.) and the other was survival- and luck-focused (survivor, fortune's friend, etc.). The skill focus let him be the physical incarnation of the academic protagonist (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MostWritersAreWriters), particularly thanks to his research skills (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ItsForABook) and knowledge of trivia (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChekhovsSkill); I tried to use the more obscure/pathetic skills as much as possible since I had the skill mods for it, and I had a lot of fun with Forgery and Speak Language that game. The luck focus meant that he was incredibly hard to kill without being particularly resilient--which came in handy at one point when the party pissed off the Aurum and assassins were sent after him to stop him from exposing their secrets. Fun times.

this right there is the reason i want to see either a campaign or a novelisation of the favorites. i can just imagine the guy, bored half to death and reading his book in a dungeon while the rest of the party is scouting out and thinking. all of a sudden, 18 mummies pop out of the walls and all hell breaks loose. without looking up from his book, he waves his hand in the noise's general direction, nonchallantly flipping his page as he does. silence. another chapter, another total wipe of all enemy life in a 100 meter diameter.

say, why is his nickname the mailpostman? he mailed his attacks labelled "to whom it may concern" ?

I have a few

Narg Greenleaf, an orc that was found by elves as an infant and raised by them. His Int was a 6, but I had rolled great stats otherwise. He was a cleric of Corellon, which was great fun.

My epic rogue is, by nature, not optimized for epic stuff. He's rogue/thief acrobat/exemplar with the Void Incarnate epic prestige and the Dark template. He made a habit of going to cities that didn't have enough crime going on, stealing a pile of cash/goods and then dumping it all on the alter to Olidammara in town (if they didn't have one, he'd build it) and then move on.

an'Halzikar, my only evil (not Stupid Evil) character, who was an eldritch theurge/ur priest. The whole point was his saves were insanely good and his warlock stuff meant he never ran out of things to do. He was a bit reserved in fights, so it was great fun when he'd cut loose after everyone else was running on fumes.

Pathfinder:

Multiclassed Bard/Magus that uses a whip to deliver touch spells from 15 feet away, and uses a spiked guantlet + buckler on off-hand to continue threatening in melee combat.

Flaming/Shocking/Thundering ranged touch attack (weapon property from Arcane Pool) + intensified Shocking Grasp (up to 10d6 damage), all while you chant and dance to an ancient warsong that fills you and your allies with courage and stamina = Fun, at least for me.

The Mailman or Postman is the general name of the blasting build he's using, the idea being that it focuses on dealing maximum damage regardless of saves, AC, SR, etc. The postal service has an unofficial motto along the lines of "Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail / shall impede delivery of the mail," so the Mailman/Postman is borrowing from that.

if you're ok with it, can this character be the narrator?

I'm sure Gil would love to continue his exciting adventures, just as long as there aren't any crystal skulls involved. :smallwink:

The most fun I ever had was with a straight rogue, I think, 10 levels then dip into Barbarian for Wolf Totem and whirling frenzy, and then into possibly Assassin after that, but that was about where the campaign ended. what the hell have i gotten myself into?, thought gil vastra, looking over the scene smoking from a curved clay pipe. he said he'd kick the habit once that last story was over, but this was pushing his limits more than usual. as he gazed in the room, he could discern a bored spellcaster leaning against the wall, reading a book, oblivious to his surroundings. there was a pair of muscle-types, both as big as they were scary, one of them seemingly talking to a rock. more than a few in the room were wary of each other, trying to gather what was happening.
as gil looked around, it seemed as though the various skill pools had agglutinated in different areas. to gil's left were the shadowy folks, a half-elf and an assassin, judging by the latter's tools. to his right were the arcane-inclined.
"i guess i'll never know if i don't ask", sighed gil, puffing on his pipe and realizing for the first time he was wearing a hat. suddenly from under him came a gravelly, yet high-pitched voice.
"hombre".
"no, homburg, but good eyes... uh, where are you?" as gil looked closer, he could see a pair of mismatched eyes seemingly floating about three feet off the ground. leaning closer, he could see scaly skin blending almost perfectly with the backdrop.
"what are you?", whispered gil.
"wanna be mi amigo? i lost my mama, i'm scared! por favor, help out poor little snack!", whined the creature. gil drew himself up to his full height, straightened his newly acquired hat and let out a long drawn out smoke-filled sigh. it's gonna be one of these days, he thought before setting out on understanding what was about to unfurl into truly the most incomprehensible story he was going to tell in all of his existence.

i took generous liberty in characterizing gil vastra, so forgive me for narrative licence. i can imagine this could become quite a tale.

The character I found the most entertaining was a human fighter2/swashbuckler3/master thrower 5 that I played off and on through a red hand of doom game.

He was the single most optimized character in the group, but was at best the third in flat power. He spammed rapid shot+improved TWF+palm toss+two with one plow 10 attacks a round that could each hit two foes. admittedly he only did 1d4+like 4? damage with each hit... but he sounded impressive while doing it.

Most fun was when the DM dropped the mini BBEG hogoblin when most of the party was missing the session. The ranger, one of the two casters, and my character were all that was left... and we dropped it in like 2 rounds.
