View Full Version : Why don't natural weapons get iterative attacks?

For example, a Winter Wolf (srd (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/winterWolf.htm)) has a +6 BAB (enough for iterative attacks, i.e. a second attack at +1), yet it only has one bite attack per round.

Could somebody point me towards the rule covering that?

From the SRD:

"Natural weapons are weapons that are physically a part of a creature. A creature making a melee attack with a natural weapon is considered armed and does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Likewise, it threatens any space it can reach. Creatures do not receive additional attacks from a high base attack bonus when using natural weapons. The number of attacks a creature can make with its natural weapons depends on the type of the attack—generally, a creature can make one bite attack, one attack per claw or tentacle, one gore attack, one sting attack, or one slam attack (although Large creatures with arms or arm-like limbs can make a slam attack with each arm). Refer to the individual monster descriptions".

I would imagine they did it to prevent monsters like dragons that have bite, claw, claw, wing, wing, tail, attacks all in one round from have 30+ attacks when their BAB is very high.

As for WHY it's that way, I guess it's because a lot of natural attack using monsters already have multiple attacks.

Totemists with iteratives would take 15 mintues to resolve their turn, for example.

The 'rapidstrike' feat grants one iterative attack to a creature's natural weapons, and the 'improved rapidstrike' feat gives the creature the full range of iterative attacks...
