Trixie's Great and Powerful Guide v1.99999
Spoiler Edition

Brief Introduction

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

> My Little Pony? Seriously?

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

> Isn't this a show for little girls?

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

> Okay, fine. I'll give it a try. Where do I start?

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

> Okay, I'm going to watch it but this had better live up to the hype!

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Iron Hoof/Fan Theories/Shipping/Binding

All in good fun! If it's not your cup of tea, skim it, but this show has triggered a great creative outpouring from the Internet. Pony themed fan-art is abundant and often excellent. See below for some examples.

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Deadly's Ironically Presented Anti-Spoiler Measures

DO YOU HATE SPOILER TAGS?

Well, Deadly's here to help you get rid of them... with a vengeance! Create a new bookmark in your browser and copy the code below as the link/url of said bookmark. Name it something helpful, like "Spoilers B GONE!" or whatever. Then whenever you view a thread here on GitP you just hit the bookmark and BAM! no more spoilers.

You won't even see the boxes, just the bare innards in all their gory glory.

It also makes sure that no image is wider than 600px, to avoid stretching pages, and will attempt to "intelligently" remove repeated images except avatars. Neat, huh? Sadly that last part means stuff like pony emotes may get lost but the forum doesn't make it easy for me to single out images in quotes as I'd have liked... that's an open problem, I guess.

Tested in Firefox, Chrome and Opera. Should work in any modern browser, but you never know with these things.

javascript:(function() { var a = document.getElementsByTagName('div'); for (var i = 0 ; i < a.length ; i++) { if (a[i].className == 'spoiler') { a[i].style.display = 'block'; a[i].className = ''; } else if (a[i].className == 'pre-spoiler') { a[i].style.display = 'none'; }} var ims = new Array(); var tmp; a = document.getElementsByTagName('img'); for (i = 0 ; i < a.length ; i++) { tmp = a[i].parentNode.className ; if (ims.indexOf(a[i].getAttribute('src')) == -1) { ims.push(a[i].getAttribute('src')); a[i].style.maxWidth = '600px'; } else if (tmp != 'avataroverflow' && tmp != 'alt2') { a[i].style.display = 'none' ; }}})();

If you don't mind repeated images, here's a version that leaves them be.

javascript:(function() { var a = document.getElementsByTagName('div'); for (var i = 0 ; i < a.length ; i++) { if (a[i].className == 'spoiler') { a[i].style.display = 'block'; a[i].className = ''; } else if (a[i].className == 'pre-spoiler') { a[i].style.display = 'none'; }} a = document.getElementsByTagName('img'); for (i = 0 ; i < a.length ; i++) { a[i].style.maxWidth = '600px'; }})();

A short little bit of dark comedy I wrote. Totally random and not to be taken too seriously, but I'd love some feedback before I submit it to the public.

Please let me know if you think it needs the Gore tag. It is slightly questionable in that department, but nothing too bad, I hope.

[Comedy][Dark] Everyone knows that dragons eat ponies. Now Spike knows it too, and he's about to get very hungry. Maybe even hungry enough to eat Snails.

Still catching up on bits from last thread.

Oh yeah, and as of right now it's my birthday. Go me! 23 orbits, 107 to go!

Happy Birthday Thanq!

I shall have to hunt up some applicable pictures once I get home today. For now, keep on being awesome, and make sure you check under your bed for Razassasins.

Edit: speculation time, what if everything happening in season three so far will converge into one gigantc story during finale. Like season one with gala dress and tickets and things.

So what does Celestia plan to do with crystals, Saddle Arabia, and Discord?

The crystal harem theory gathers more weight with each passing day eh?

My two bits:
I liked it. I don't think it really needs a [Gore] tag, but I don't really know what the usual expectations are for one. Clever title too. A couple of things though:

and a tall chef's togue—also black What's a togue? I'm guessing that's supposed to be toque.
Also, Spike's imagination going into overdrive due to someone making breakfast seems strange, and I think was a little unnecessary. Some uncertainty would be fine perhaps, but "Shaking like a pudding in an earthquake..."? Spike's a pretty brave baby dragon, some of the time.
The rest is excellent IIRC, characterization, pacing, et cetera.

I never really paid much attention to the way Snails speaks in the show, and the revelation from reading this and confirming that he has a "Canadian accent" is both hilarious and vaguely insulting.

Ah yes, that should have been "toque". Well spotted

As for Spike, I was mostly thinking of his panicking about Fluttershy in Feeling Pinkie Keen (What if she explodes ... and then explodes again?) I think he's got a pretty lively imagination sometimes. Maybe I'll tone it down a bit, though. I'll consider it, at least

Glad you liked it :) I didn't recall Snails' speech either until I looked up some details on the wiki and it mentioned it. I guess it's not something you really notice a lot in the show

Wow, new thread already? You'll excuse me if I don't catch up on the previous one immediately. You guys produce too much crazy in a week for that.

Thoughts on the new episode:
Season 3 episode 10 (Keep Calm and Flutter On) spoilers
This episode reminds me of One Bad Apple, where it deals with a pretty big problem and tries to resolve it in such a short time frame. The entire premise feels kind of weird, although at least it answers the question of why they'd just leave Discord statue'd for another 1000 years. Discord seems to about-face relatively quickly, although perhaps that does fit him a bit. (Good job with the foreshadowing.)

Fluttershy promising to not use her element against Discord seems just like an idiot-ball moment to me, though. It only works because Discord ends up reformed, but I'm not seeing any kind of confidence from Fluttershy that it will work for sure, nor anything indicating that Discord will surely reform himself. Plus, I'm not sure there that much of a point, since Fluttershy could still withdraw her friendship and have the same effect.

I guess it was more meaningful from Discord's perspective, though. He "won", after all, but then realized that the victory didn't really mean that much.

Anyways, other news about myself. Semi-pony related. (Spoilered for those who care).
Finally received a credit card, finally signed up for PayPal, and discovered that the stuff I'm using it for doesn't use PayPal. :smalltongue: I ordered the first season DVD set, which is due to be delivered by the end of the month. (yay!) I also backed the FATE Core Kickstarter.

I bought the MLP comic #2 earlier this month. The local comic store is supposed to be getting a restock of comic #1 this Wednesday (I've been bugging them a lot about it) and comic #3 should be there on the 30th. [Edit] I just read the news on EqD, and it looks like I should expect #3 on the first week of February.

The trading cards have disappeared from Target and Meijers for the last month or so, and with the new set being planned I decided to pick up another of the Twilight-tins. It's not a bad deal, $11.99 with six packs inside compared to $1.99 per pack, so pennies difference. It is far better than Hot Topic charging $3.50 per pack.

Anyways, I opened it up and was surprised to get one of the two cards I was still missing: Gold Foil Luna! I'd actually given up on pulling that card, as gold foils seem to be around 1:20 pack ratios and I've been pulling Cadance most times. This means that there is only one card I'm missing from the first set: Queen Chrysalis. Yes, I have every other card in the set, including multiples of every other common card, but the one card I am missing is the only changeling. I do giggle at the irony. (For the curious, I've opened around 150 packs.)

I did like that hollow victory. That little point where he realizes that there's more to life than causing chaos. Indeed, "Well played Fluttershy" pretty much sums it all up nicely.

So I saw the Letter de Lancie wrote (http://www.equestriadaily.com/2013/01/brony-documentary-released.html#more) to accompany the documentary release. I myself have no plans to ever pirate the documentary.

On the other hand, I also feel like there's some serious hypocrisy going on at the same time. Scroll back up to the top of that EQD page. Pinned to the very top of the blog is a link that takes you to Youtube copies of each Season 3 episode. Can they really turn around and condemn pirating the documentary at the same time?

Like it or not this fandom is pretty much built on piracy and free content available over the internet. They're not shocked. They're asking us nicely not to do it and giving us a friendly warning that they will exercise their right to take it down if they see it up. They explained that it has to be this way so that they can present it to film festivals and have it played in real cinemas. They're not condemning anyone.

I would, admittedly, like all the de Lancy songs put online so I had them in one place, but otherwise I think it's a reasonable position. If I ever released a book or movie that's about the same approach I'd take.

Eh, you probably wouldn't host a kickstarter to get your book or movie going though. It's weird right now because kickstarter is not an investment into the venture, it's just a donation, but people still feel like their contribution to the project means that the project should be done somewhat according to their wishes. And I'm pretty sure that the collective donors would want a free version of the documentary, not a $13 price tag and no YouTube access.

I should clarify. It's not de Lancie or the filmaking crew I'm accusing of being hypocritical, it's EQD and anyone else in the fandom that treats downloading or streaming episodes of MLP:FiM and downloading or streaming this documentary as in any way morally distinct. As far as I know the former has never pirated anything MLP related.

Bronies being able to stream MLP episodes or download them cost the people who make the show money. You can't say that's 100% OK but it's not OK to do the same thing to a film about MLP fans. Especially when those same MLP fans put up the initial capital for the documentary in the first place.

It is entirely unclear whether Bronies downloading and streaming episodes cost the show any money whatsoever. I would argue that in fact it was profitable for Hasbro, which is why they allowed it to go on for as long as they did (and continue to allow it to go on in some ways, even if they have cracked down on YouTube now).

Consider: it only costs Hasbro money if the people watching via the Internet were going to watch on their TVs and/or buy DVDs instead. Now, certainly there were some people who would have watched the show on TV if it weren't streamed, and that does lower the show's ratings a bit, which translates to lower ad revenue. But I also think there were many more who would never have watched it at all if not for the free Internet viewing. I'd bet you that a significant fraction of the group that would never have watched at all if not for the Internet went on to buy toys, clothes, or other merchandise. The fandom also brought the show a lot of hype and news, which in turn leads to more toy sales and higher viewership.

So, I'd personally argue that giving the show away was the most profitable decision Hasbro could have made, at least until a couple of months ago and the difficulty of international deals.

Wait, streaming the movie is costing us money? Wow, I didn't know I was getting royalties from this!! :smalltongue:

Way I read that letter, JDL's request didn't seem that unreasonable to me. They need the movie off Youtube in order to be able to distribute it via festivals or cinemas to a wider audience.

Hasbro, on the other hoof, already owns its own distribution channel through the Hub, so they can afford to turn a semi-blind eye to things like youtubing the episodes since it won't impact their ability to show them within the States where their primary target demographic resides.

While it might impact the distribution overseas, I suspect someone has weighed up those difficulties against the cost of hindering their reach to their primary non-target demographic in us net denizens. :smalltongue:

It's not costing us anything. :smallwink: I also agree that DeLancie's letter makes a reasonable request.

What I was pointing out above is that when you crowdfund a project, there's a certain ambiguity in the status of the donors. They're not investors, not really, but I think many donors on kickstarter feel that projects should be tailored to their expectations and it's not really great to upset a lot of people who are also the ones that just gave you a lot of money. And, in this case specifically, I think most of the donors would have preferred a free distribution channel for the movie.

Indeed. Though that condition is mostly to avoid securities regulation. Kickstarter would go out of business if they allowed you to invest in ongoing ventures and had to start filing with the SEC. That crap is expensive.

You present a persuasive case, but I won't disagree that hardcore bronies having free access to every episode of the show ever made isn't costing them, in online purchases via iTunes if nothing else. And these are also most likely the people who are on EQD and know about the documentary at all.

If EQD didn't know and like de Lancie, there'd already be a link to a Youtube video of the documentary right next to the episode links and the comments would be defending the decision based on it somehow improving de Lancie's draw to various cons and whatnot.

You're also tearing me up because I think keeping MLP freely available and f&#k the law and the property rights of those who own it would be the best way for the brony communtiy to grow and stay healthy. That doesn't make it right, but it is sorely tempting.

You are a font of fascinating knowledge. Do you happen to know what the policy is if one doesn't need all ones budget anyways?

For Kickstarter? I don't know their particular policy details, no. I do know that they were discussed when congress debated the inventively named JOBS Act last year, which changed the rules for crowdfunded businesses. And the discussion was basically that the new federal regulation didn't apply to Kickstarter because Kickstarter is just hosting presales with t-shirts and stuff as prizes.

I don't know the details of the JOBS act though. I'm aware that it draws a distinction at ventures under $1 million, which require less financing. I also think that a crowdfunded venture has a cap it can take from an individual donor, maybe about $5000 (but I could be wrong on that number). I believe that if the venture breaks either the size or individual donor cap, it has to do full filings with the SEC as though it were doing a regular initial public offering of its stock (a process that requires employing a law firm for several months at a rate of ~$500/hour).

Perfectly valid philosophy. My objection is to those who want to split the difference they've drawn between "media owned by people we like" and "media owned by people we don't know well enough to care about."

From a business perspective, it's increasingly becoming the case that that difference is where all the money is.

You know the phrase, the Customer is King? In the Internet Age that's wrong. In the Internet Age, the Customer is God. With the technology we have and the pervasiveness and potency of filesharing paying for almost any media becomes strictly optional. If a customer becomes sufficiently irate with any distributor then they are willing and able to simply take what they want and give nothing in return. Morals and ethics aside, this is the capability 21st century customers have, and it's terrifying.

So, when payment becomes optional, the reality is that you're not asking for payment - you're asking for donations. And this is what the smartest businesses have realised - you can't DRM customers out of things, you can't twist their arms or keep it a secret, and doing so often turns your customer base against you. Nobody likes paying an ass, not even for high quality stuff, and being disliked is a death sentence in the new model.

Running a pitch for donations is very different to running a business where you have any power in the relationship. You have to be liked, and be prepared to go a long way establishing a brand name and likeable persona before you try to capitalise on it. Then you can use that likeability and fan loyalty to politely ask people not to steal from you and it works.

Does it suck for a creative type to have to put out huge amounts of free content before they've built up enough reputation to ask politely for money? Yes. Is there a more viable business model in an environment where consumers have such an immense amount of power? Not that we've discovered yet.

I've heard suggestions for some kind of aggregated tracking system combined with a tax on hardware. That is, maybe add a few dollars (or more, I don't know the amount) onto all sales of computers, routers, modems, cables, and so forth, then make a pool of money. All media is free, but we come up with some way to track usage statistics (easy on something like YouTube, hard as hell when we're talking about dispersed downloads), then money is paid out from the pool based on relative popularity of content.

The two problems are
1. Any kind of aggregated tracker is horrendous to try and implement from a technological perspective and
2. Lady Gaga will be replaced by people that release cute videos of cats.

But if you get over those two problems, it is somewhat reasonable as a theory.

Yes, I raised that same question to the professor who suggested the theory. That would fall under the category of problem 1: a technical solution for this thing is absolutely horrendous.

Edit: Well, his response was a bit more complex than that. He suggested that tracking doesn't have to be number of downloads or hits on a website that could be spammed. It could be reporting software on computers (which raises terribly frightening privacy issues) or require some kind of anti-spam measure like captcha codes. It could also be done through a small selection of randomized paid volunteers the same way that they currently do TV ratings, which are pretty statistically accurate.

No, the technical solution is feasible, provided everyone agrees on the new standard.

And yes, China is not exactly happening. Of course, they're also not subject to U.S. copyright law and the status of their international treaties is dubious at best. So, it's not like it would be getting any worse, is what I'm saying.

I won't disagree with your premise that file sharing and consumer power is more or less absolute (though it may not always be if the foundations of internet anonymity come under assault, and the way things are moving I would count on that assault happening sooner rather than later)

I might raise issue with your claim that all DRM is censorship and will turn your fans into a ravenous horde devoted to your demise. I think it can be done well, see Valve and Steam as example A.

The documentary ran it's pitch for donations with the fandom, complete with EQD plug, and did quite well. About five times as well as expected, in fact.

How many times has EQD run letters from the DHX Media crew along the lines of "if you don't buy the episodes on iTunes, we won't get paid as much!" Answer: never. That would be exactly equivalent to what they ran here, but know what would happen if they did? "Eww, I don't want to be bothered to download iTunes, that's worse than Nazis!" or "LOL I'm broke so I should get what I want without having to pay for anything!" They never will. After all that would cost them traffic.

TL;DR, You can't claim the moral high ground when your business model depends on you being neck deep in a moral tar pit.

God, I want to go pirate the documentary just on principle now. Good thing I have absolutely no interest in it.

EDIT: Skimmed the above discussion while I was pacing my room ranting and raving before distilling my madness into something moderately coherent; I wouldn't count on the internet staying as free as it is forever if I were you. I think a crackdown built into its very architecture is vastly more likely than getting the 'international community' to agree on anything.

I'm not following that one. That's only true if you make a bad system that allows spambots to alter the aggregated statistics. There are other ways of doing it that would distribute the money to the people who made works of high quality that people like, though I agree that a technical solution that prevents interference of spam bots is really hard.

That's the argument against a potential crackdown. Countries don't want to agree on standards, which perpetuates the free-and-open status quo. And believe it or not, the pro-free internet lobby is incredibly powerful.

I'd suspect a system-wide Internet crackdown would be unlikely for this reason. It could only happen if a whole bunch of countries agreed on how to do it. Businesses can't ever do it on their own, even if Google takes over the whole world because implementing a global standard of that sort would violate anti-trust laws. It's government agreement or everybody competing.

That's too simplistic. As I noted above, two imperfect options are using statistical sampling like they do for TV ratings or to require captcha or similar human identifying technology for free downloads.

Okay, so the fic idea that I had proposed for AJ earlier has rather caught my imagination. However, it provides me with a new challenge: genre shift. I'm switching from Slice Of Life to Mystery Drama.

Now, I've read my share of Agatha Christie over the years, but I'm not entirely confident in my abilities to copy the genre yet. What are some basic tips to creating a Mystery? My instinct tells me to work backwards, figure out how It Was Done, and then cover it up one piece at a time. That sound right?

A reasonable, if somewhat cheap way to do this kind of thing is to come up with your preferred solution and then present the basic facts to your friends and family and write down all the ways they get it wrong.

Och, aye. Europe in particular has an incredibly strong human rights and internet freedom policy, America is the single biggest beneficiary of a free internet, China isn't going to compromise it's national security, and most other nations have more pressing concerns.

As easy as it is to imagine the cackling RIAA villains striking a terrible blow for internet censorship, if they could have done that they would have done it ten years ago before they lost hundreds of millions of dollars to said piracy. They're pushing, but plenty of others are pushing back.

That's too simplistic. As I noted above, two imperfect options are using statistical sampling like they do for TV ratings or to require captcha or similar human identifying technology for free downloads.

Even the end goal is dubious, because it rewards volume of hits. Gangam Style has about a billion hits, while RBD Presents has about 20,000 - and I don't think the former is 500 times better than the latter. If we're going to redistribute wealth from the citizens to hungry artists then we should distribute it to the artists who aren't already millionaires. This is a huge regressive tax on everyone to support the opulent lifestyles of a minority and their media engines.

It's a huge step backwards, is what I'm saying, when there's so much benefit to be had in adapting to the new media.

In other words, it's the latest episode verbatim?

I maintain that it will become increasingly easy for individual countries to filter content they consider objectionable, but it's really neither here nor there as it pertains to ponies so I'm happy to drop it.

I raise you EA and Always-Online as example B. Almost all DRM is cracked within 72 hours of launch. The trick is to have a business model that is more convenient than going to the pirate sites.
My point was that Steam represents proof of concept more than anything else. "80% off this weekend only: Buy the licence to every pony episode of season one and two for five bucks!" would be a winner. But yes, it can be done in a bad and infuriating way that does more harm than good.

This is pure hyperbole and speculation.
OK, drop the second part, for argument's sake. When has EQD run any article saying piracy is wrong and we should purchase the episodes? Not an article along the lines of "Oh gosh the episodes are available to buy too, you guy... you know... if that's OK with you..."

Compare to the number of times they've posted a link to pirated content (read: every single new episode)

EQD is a pro-piracy website.

Your argument is faulty and incoherent and your conclusions are suspect.

EQD is pro-piracy. They doesn't get to turn around and implicitly endorse and anti-piracy perspective because they like a dude, without me calling bull.

But if you get over those two problems, it is somewhat reasonable as a theory.

I'd add:

3. A single piece of hardware can be used to partake in indefinite quantities of media over its useful lifetime. I'd say conservatively I have exceeded a 1:1000 ratio considering individual separate instances and the variety of media I partake in. And hundreds of creators. How expensive must my machine be for it to be giving individual "shares" of even $.50? And I can dilute that further as I stretch my machine because I'm paying extra in taxes and can't afford to upgrade as often.

4. Hardware price does not nessecarily scale in proportion to increased media usage. I can watch youtube on a cheap tablet if I want. Many people I know use their phones for that.

Along with much to be said of the issues you raised. Professional creators with multi-million dollar production are going to agree to the same per-person rate of pay as a dude with a camcorder and pet cat? Yeah.

Good point about Applejack and Rainbow, but when has Twilight been in pigtails? I've always seen her hair pinned up or let down.

I'm going by 3D models of ponies - while FS, PP, and Rarity always let their mane hang to one side, Twilight, RD and AJ have it split into 2 distinct pony/pigtails. This is difficult to notice in the show, as laziness time saving dictates to simply mirror image a pony from more distinct side, but there are a few scenes with 'fake 3D' rotation where you can see it.

No, that's still piracy. They give you multiple downloads so you can get it onto multiple machines or back it up if you accidentally delete it. I haven't read the agreement (because nobody reads those agreements, not even the lawyers) but I'd bet that it forbids you from giving it to someone else unless you give up your own rights to it.

It just happens to be piracy that doesn't feel morally wrong because you feel that you ought to possess something that's been given to you, when in fact it's been given to you subject to several limiting conditions that you haven't read.

I could be wrong though, maybe they wrote an especially generous end user agreement for this.

It's possible, but as far as I can tell, there is no agreement in place. I didn't have to initial anything; there was no wall of text to skip past. All I had to do was sign up, provide some basic information, and pay the price of the film.

It may be piracy; it may not be. I'll trust the lawyer pony to know what he's talking about.

And this is why Sombra is Best Villain.

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/014/0/2/why_so_little_sombra_by_mickeymonster-d5rh2h6.png

His expression in the last panal is gold.

Well, that and the fact he didn't frack about gloating and got right on with the job at hand, and his plan and defenses were both highly reasonable and very nearly worked. I couldn't see any huge logical flaws in his plan (worth noting in passing it is possible to do everything riht and still lose), and he didn't waste time toying with people, he just went right after his goal with all expediency. That is way rare in villains, period.

(I just hope if we do see him again, he sticks to that, and not get "befriended" or turned good something. We lose more good villains that way (see Star Wars, Spike from Buffy, lots of characters in shonen, etc etc etc)

Also, grabbed a couple more blind bags - a Rarity (which will go to my niece, but annoyling according to my sheet of gubbins should have been AJ) and RD, which actually bring my little collection slightly less unicorn heavy and respresentation for all three pony types, finally.

As to documentary: linked video was fun, but it doesn't inspire me anymore to watch it, since I'm just not generally a documentary person unless it's like, by Sir David Attenborough or Tony Robinson or something, and even then only maybe.

Happy birthday Thanqol! 24 hour margin of error applies, of course.

Prereaders Wanted
A short little bit of dark comedy I wrote. Totally random and not to be taken too seriously, but I'd love some feedback before I submit it to the public.

Please let me know if you think it needs the Gore tag. It is slightly questionable in that department, but nothing too bad, I hope.

[Comedy][Dark] Everyone knows that dragons eat ponies. Now Spike knows it too, and he's about to get very hungry. Maybe even hungry enough to eat Snails.

Escargot (http://www.fimfiction.net/story/78231/escargot)

Swwwweet
I have no idea how that's supposed to sound. Sssweet? Sweeeet?

Best meat's on the rump, if you ask me, and of course you do.
That sentence just seems awkward to me, particularly if I say it out loud.

Oh, hi Pinkie.
I think Spike calls her Pinkie Pie pretty much all the time, but my memory may just be bad. Minor thing overall.

oblivious to his current fantasies about dousing her in hot sauce and digging through her warm innards for the mushy, half-digested stuff in her gut. The book had explained quite graphically about that.
This is the one part where you're edging into a gore tag. It's not enough to warrant it yet, but it's something to consider.

It had to be impossible and certainly illegal, but she shone like a flawless million carat diamond in Spike's eyes.
Does Spike want to eat Rarity too or is this just normal lovesickness? I can't tell from the narrative.

“Oh, come on!”
Another minor voice issue, I just don't see Rarity saying that in that situation.

I'm just standing here anyway doing nothing, why can't you just work while I sleep?
'Anyway' works better after the 'doing nothing'.

WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING, YOUNG MAN?!”
One more voice issue, Fluttershy seems like she'd go for 'mister' rather than 'young man'.

Elizabeak
*Snerk*

It probably thought the rock was another snail.
That line disrupts the pacing a bit.

That pony Snails,
I think Spike would just call him Snails by this point.

The biggest issue I had with the story was that the cravings for pony flesh kind of seemed to come out of nowhere. There was the dream at the beginning, but the narrative never really attaches any significance to that. I'd also go for more exaggeration, particularly before he's about to eat Snails, but that's a purely personal preference.

Overall I liked it. The beginning caught me off-guard, but once I'd shifted I found myself snickering at the detailed descriptions of pony with regards to their edibility.

Villains getting befriended and turned to good is annoying; they should be more ruthless and efficient about achieving their goals.

No, you misunderstand: I got me some pony toys, one of which turned out (contarary to my best efforts at identification) to be one I had already got, so will therefore be passed on to my niece, rather than just ditched.

Subtle difference. Efficiency means not being wasteful after all.

I'm pretty sure the definition of pigtail or ponytail involves some manner of tie. What I see on Twilight models strikes me as more similar to this (http://thechive.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/long-hair-16.jpg) than anything else: the hair falls some on one side of the neck and some on the other. She being a quadruped, not a lot of it is going to lie along her back.

I have no idea how that's supposed to sound. Sssweet? Sweeeet?

That sentence just seems awkward to me, particularly if I say it out loud.

I think Spike calls her Pinkie Pie pretty much all the time, but my memory may just be bad. Minor thing overall.

This is the one part where you're edging into a gore tag. It's not enough to warrant it yet, but it's something to consider.

Does Spike want to eat Rarity too or is this just normal lovesickness? I can't tell from the narrative.

Another minor voice issue, I just don't see Rarity saying that in that situation.

'Anyway' works better after the 'doing nothing'.

One more voice issue, Fluttershy seems like she'd go for 'mister' rather than 'young man'.

*Snerk*

That line disrupts the pacing a bit.

I might raise issue with your claim that all DRM is censorship and will turn your fans into a ravenous horde devoted to your demise. I think it can be done well, see Valve and Steam as example A.

I raise you EA and Always-Online as example B. Almost all DRM is cracked within 72 hours of launch. The trick is to have a business model that is more convenient than going to the pirate sites.
Also, people love Valve. There's a picture around somewhere comparing companies to your friends, and there's examples like 'that friend from high school you can't get rid of'. And then Valve. Is 'your cat. Everyone loves them, especially the internet.'

What's the reverse of being ninja'd? Being pirate'd? Hmm... don't sound right...

I'm creating a mystery story myself and working backwards is how I put the outline together.
Another thing I did was write down all the clues that the protagonist would find and at what point they find them. This way I can keep myself consistant with how much the protagonist knows about the mystery.

In general, the style I'm going with has the reader know only as much as the protagonist. So there are no chapters focusing on the antagonist or supporting characters when they're not with the main star of the story. However, you may be writing things differently than I. I'm not very familair with Agatha Christie.

Did you see my idea earlier? I think if you're trying to write a mystery you definitely do want to work backwards. But don't think of it as dropping clues for a mystery, think of it more like a real-world investigation. You know what happened, you know the things that the ponies involved forgot or did wrong. How hard are they to notice. Take the factual scenario and describe it to other people you know and see what they come up with and have them explain how they came up with their scenario. Then change things to make the scene more clear or don't change things and leave the red herrings around.

Here's a mundane scenario. Somehow has gone out for an unspecified length of time. You want to know how long they're going to be gone, but they didn't tell you. They did, however, leave the door to their room open. There are many things you can check: is it cleaned up and is that normal? Is the computer in the room still on or did they turn it off? Is their bag/backpack/wallet still in the room? Did they change clothes before going out and is there another pair of clothing left out? Are there any dishes undone, any lights on, dishwasher or laundry running? Are windows open? Are shades/binds open or closed?

Well, this is rather disappointing. Doesn't look like my latest story is going to get all that much attention. And here I thought I had given it a rather attention-grabbing description and all, but it's off the front page now and barely any views.

I guess I still can't predict what stories will reach the featured box. My last two stories didn't get any big attention either. I had high hopes for the Butterfly Brouhaha, and my latest isn't too bad either I'm sure, but alas, they all just sort of drop off the front page in half an hour to languish in eternal obscurity.

Is there some secret magic trick? Other than the rather tedious process of getting it featured on EqD? I just can't find the energy to go through that.

Maybe I should start publishing clopfics after all. That seems to get tons of attention whether it's good or not.

In my view, Celestia is an old and powerful pony. Discord is a weird dragon with extensive but fundamentally limited magical powers.
I do not agree with the central assumption that Equestria was ever a God or Goddess ruled nation*.

So, Morrowind by default. Though they can keep it, I've no interest in such a Cliff Racer infested hell-hole :smallwink:

* note, Celestia does fullfill some of the same roles as a deity, as far as pony culture goes, at any rate. I still say it doesn't count.

Edit - Deadly, I can kind of empathise, but I also think it's worth seconding Thanqol. Hell, I'm pretty sure I have a picture or two on Deviantart that have essentially never been seen by another living person, if I get a half dozen hits or a single favourite then the work has been a runaway success. Yes, but I like to think there ought to be things you can do to increase the odds. Like a clever description or the right title, or maybe the right image. You know ... you want to make your story whisper in their ears "You want to read me! Go on, you know you want to :smallwink:" It's a job for a Mind mage, I'm sure. What tickles the fancy of fanfic readers? What works? I apparently don't know.

It would help if there were some better ways to promote fanfics, rather than relying on pure chance. On dA there are the groups, which work really well to draw attention to artwork (although not so much fanfiction). Do the groups on FiMFiction do much of anything? I get the impression they don't, but I suppose I should give them a closer look.

Really? That was it? Huh... thought it would be more... out of the ordinary.

Well, he did make a direct reference to Star Trek. Though it was rather understated. *shrug* I suppose that's what happens when you predict that a line will make the internet explode.

As I recently started getting into mlp fanfics, I've generally just gone by description, and specifically a clear explanation of the premise so I can decide if it sounds interesting.

The description is no doubt important. I always try to come up with one that will grab the interest of people, but I apparently haven't got the art down yet. I try to keep them short, to the point, and most of all something that will make people stop for a moment to think. If they just breeze through the description without seeing anything out of the ordinary, then they're likely to continue right on to the next story. Or at least so I've thought. It's a highway, you need to drop a great big road block in their face.

I suspect my most popular story got a lot of attention simply due to its image, so that too shouldn't be dismissed.

I know that on dA, the time of the day can be a factor, especially if you hope to hit the front page "most popular". I try never to submit art while the US is asleep. I assume it is much the same for FiMFiction and always try to make sure my stories appear on the front page when the US is awake, which is really hard because you can't really know when they're going to get around to accepting it, unlike dA where everything is visible immediately.

Maybe I should start publishing clopfics after all. That seems to get tons of attention whether it's good or not.

Ah, the eternal struggle of all of us artists/writers. Do we do what we like, or what gets the fame/money? I suppose my advice is if you don't plan to make any serious money off your creativity, just do what you like.

New Episode
So forgive me if you guys already noticed this, but remember how we were told to keep an ear out for DeLancie's big line? I was finally directed to where it was: 6:34 in the episode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7IlqFgGmec). (I would have linked to the time directly, but my computer was acting strange.)
S3e10 Keep Calm and Flutter On
It was probably that or the "Well played, Fluttershy. Well played." at the end. To be honest, I've avoided spoilers so I'm not sure what exactly was supposed to be important about the line.

I really liked Butterfly Brouhaha, though. :smallfrown:

I think it's a combination of ongoing stories (which are around longer and so get more views/fans) and using characters that are popular with the fandom. Some people will read any story starring Fluttershy or set in Fallout Equestria, while they skip over stories about background characters.

Other than that, I tend to focus on other stories of authors I like. I mean, I still haven't finished writing anything (>_>) so can't offer any first-hand advise.

It did seem a bit abrupt didn't it? Though, it isn't officially stated in the episode that Dust gets kicked out and I'd like to think she was demoted rather than getting the boot. It be quite a waste of talent (and a strange academy) if they're not willing to fix that one flaw and mold Dust into being more responsible.

She really, really wasn't.

Isn't she? In a theatrical tragedy sense, the hero is usually somebody noble doing something bad and suffering greatly as a result. Yes, everything I know about English literature I learned from Crash Course. So feel free to correct me on anything I get wrong. I suppose she's not literally a noble, but she is a great flier and a WA cadet, and therefore should be held to a higher standard, therefore "noble". On the other hand, WA is not a tragedy, because half the cast does not die from ear poisoning and brother-stabbing because of her actions, but that's a minor counterpoint. The major argument against her being a tragic hero for me is: she isn't being tormented by the situation as it unfolds and doesn't have the screen-time to do so. Which means if thе narrative was centered around her without changing any of the plot, she would totally become a tragic hero.

Not so clear-cut as "really, really", is it now? :smalltongue:

The reason Lightning Dust isn't a tragic hero is that she does not inspire pity of and fear for herself in the audience, and that the action of her story does not allow the audience to transcend that (nonexistent) pity and fear for her. Social status, self-torment, and mass carnage is all window dressing. What makes a tragic hero is the relationship between audience, character, and action, and when it comes to Lightning Dust, that relationship is not there.

I just had an interesting idea for a fic involving:

Princess Celestia/Luna and Rarity/Sweetie Bell. I picture it as somewhat of a follow up to The Sisterhoof Social in that it (hopefully) follows the evolution of sisterly relations between the two pairs and how Luna might empathize with Sweetie's position relative to Rarity (considering that Luna is still in the same place with Celestia, albeit with more responsibility).

Obviously this is a very rough plan that needs fleshing out (although i bet somepony has already written something similar to this, i mean, this IS the internet) and I don't even know if I'll be able to get around to it anytime soon.

Thoughts?

As someone with military background, Spitfire's behavior in Wonderbolt Academy wasn't out of place. There's a distinct behavior change between off-duty and on-duty.

Also as pointed out, Lightning Dust's fate is left rather ambiguous, more then likely she was simply demoted and dismissed to minor punishment like kitchen duties, skin them apples private!

See, this is a good argument. Yes, calling her a tragic hero of the story as shown in the episode is not right, and this is a better explanation of _why_ then my "not enough screen time of torment" imitation of analysis. I was just trying to get the discussion ball rolling past the "she is" vs "nuh-huh" phase.

I still think (if Lightning really got kicked out an not just demoted) that when/if she retells this episode of her life to her children, she'll be the tragic hero of _that_ story.

Yeah though I'm not sure it was intended per say Lightning Dust violated the number one principle of military training: safety.

Especially safety of others.

What happened to Lightning Dust is more or less exactly what was supposed to happen under military discipline. Given in theory it should have been in Spitfire's office but we must make some allowances for a dramatic scene. A few words to Dash, a "my office, now!" for LD, and an announcement the next morning of switch ups in role for reasons not quite disclosed... well truer to life but not interesting television. I was thinking more along the lines of Luna coming across the letter that Sweetie and Rarity wrote from SHS and then deciding to see for herself how a younger sibling acts towards an older one (y'know, seeing as how Luna was imprisoned for 1000 years) without having to cave in on every discussion or disagreement. I kinda wish I were at all competent at songwriting, because a duet with Sweetie and Luna (using ROYAL CANTERLOCK) would probably be hilarious.

Well, you could point it out at the beginning of the story as a hook-- Celestia's ahead in the paperwork, ponies are having some pretty content dreams lately, there's no eldtitch abomination threating Equestria. Thus the royal advisers ask Celestia when was the last time she had a day off?

So then the royal sisters take the day off and... huh. So what DO the royals sister do when not running the nation? That question sounds like an interesting hook. They've been so busy running things they forgot some of the basics of being sisters.

I like to explore taboos and provoke people into questioning things, because people are all too quick with knee-jerk judgments.

Therein may be part of the reason. From the recent debates we've had, it's clear that your take on Equestria is different to some of the rest of us (e.g. from prior debates on what you think constitues "dark" and your ambivilent relationship to the cartoon-ier aspects of the show). It may simply be that the things you want to explore in your stories are not necessarily things that a lot of people are immediately interested in. There's nothing wrong with that, of course (Planescape Torment, the best RPG of all time, had only mediocre sales at the time, I think!); I'm just pointing out that if ponythread is vaguely representative of the fandom, your tastes may be slightly more towards the minority. Which makes hooking people in that much more difficult for you.

(It's also worth noting that a lot of the writers who started writing when EQD was the main source of fanfic - i.e. before fimfic really got off the ground, it was easier to achive notority. And thus those authors have their own fanbases. (I know sometimes I'll see a concept - usually in the feature box, if I'm honest...! - for a story that I think "meh" and then I'll see who the author is and go "oh, well, that's worth a shot, then!" (E.g. anything Decendant or Skywriter writes.) Which, as I suspect I am not alone in, tends to mean they hit the feature box more often. And also the longer a fic goes on, and the more chapters put out, the more interest you'll naturally generate over time. And I'm sure EQD features definately help too. But getting established now is more difficult, due to just greater volume (though Chengar of Winning Pony fame and his cadre seem to have made it, so it can be done.))

But, I suspect, a very great deal now the fandom is more heavily established, is luck and the oh-so-critical presentation of your summary.

Just a thought - it might be worth getting the people who've beta-read your stories to beta-read and/or suggest alterations for your summaries too, and maybe conflab with ponythread on what images to use for the presentation. Like thread titles, there is an art to summaries and titles. Past Sins was I think was among one of the first to have a big title image (though now a lot of stories do), and it was certainly one of the more evocative ones at the time which I think that had a lot to do with it's notority.

But at the end of the day, all you can really do is write the best story you want to write. Even if only a few people read it, if you brighten one person's day, that's what it's all about, isn't it?

(There's a chap on Fanfic who's writing a big long Generation X story (over five years now and 320k words) and it's only (criminally) got about 30 reviews - most of which are yours truly - I don't normally review every chapter, but for this one I make the exception. But he keeps at it anyway, because he likes writing; which is good because it's about the only place I'm likely to get Jubilee stories at the moment...! I make a point to make a comment every chapter, just to let him know that there's at least one person religiously reading it (even if it sometimes takes me a while to get to it!))

Some of my stories certainly aren't for everyone, but really, a lot of them are perfectly safe reading. I guess the topic and description of my latest story might have made a lot of people turn away without giving it a chance. I had hoped the title and Comedy tag would give them enough of a clue, though.

Not all of my stories are all that dark or anything. Even my Dark stories aren't usually as dark as people might expect. I could probably have dropped the Dark tag on II without anyone complaining, maybe given it the Adventure tag instead.

Part of the problem is that, if there's likely to be just one little scene where one pony gets slightly hurt, then I'm likely to give it the Dark tag just to be sure, where I've seen others who didn't even give it to stories where ponies die horribly. Maybe Adventure does cover ponies getting hurt and dying, but I just don't want people to read my stories thinking it's just like the show and then complain that one little pony got a little hurt.

Being established helps, but there's "unknown" and "famous" and pretty much nothing in between. It's either or in my experience.

I'm a little sad that I got on FiMFiction so late, after I had had three stories on EqD. If those three stories had been on FiMFiction at the time I would likely have had more of a following there.

Not a bad idea, and I have done that occasionally. Though in the case of an unfinished story it's pretty hard for an outsider to really give a sensible description of the story.

True enough, though feedback is still great, and once you've had it you really kinda want it again. Fame is addicting :smalltongue:

I often feel that advertising is the 3rd pillar of the formula. If it weren't for EqD's Drawfriend and DA's Trixie supremacy group I think a lot of my pony art would have gone largely unnoticed.
One trick is to find several different venues (especially if they interact) and get some friends to make some comments about it just to get people talking (Often this is how artwork from professionals end up in modern galleries).

I really do like when a more detailed style is applied to ponies, making it clear that they have fur and making the hooves stand out more.

Only problem with InuHoshi's stuff is that the way noses are drawn makes all the mares look really butch.

Leaving aside the kind of valid thought of her being a tragic hero from her own perspective for a moment, no I really do think it is every bit as clear cut as that.

Lightning Dust is a natural bully. She's the worst kind of self obsessed ego maniac, with no capacity for empathy and no concern for the safety of her fellow ponies at all. She borders on being a complete monster quite frankly, in a way that even Trixie at her worst did not.

At least, in my opinion. None of which makes her a bad character mind you, rather the opposite when you look at how she is otherwise quite superficially similar to Rainbow Dash.

As far as I am concerned, whilst it is left nominally ambiguous, I don't think there's any question whether she was or should have been thrown out of the academy. Having nearly caused numerous deaths both of civilians and her own classmates via her near sociopathic disregard for others, you bet she was kicked out. The academy is a feeder institution for the single most prestigious organisation of it's type in Equestria she has quite comprehensibly proven she is unfit even to be considered at this point. If she is truly worthy, she will have to redeem herself and quite extensively prove that she has done so if she ever wants a second chance.

I think I might have quite strong opinions on the matter. Huh.

Edit - Regarding InuHoshi;
Dog noses. That is all.

Woah, woah, woah. We didn't see nearly enough of her to say things like 'complete lack of empathy' and 'self obsessed egomaniac'. She was rather callous, and quite obviously didn't care much what others thought, except proving that she was better than the others. Her tornado antics were, well, reckless to the extreme, but not based on any active decision to harm others; she just wanted to be the best by as much as possible. My main problem, though, is that Spitfire supported her every action until the climax, when she suddenly (I assume, at least!) kicked her out of the academy. She should at least have been giving a warning or something, in my opinion.

Speaking of Wonderbolts Academy, I had a thought that I don't think I've seen anywhere yet. Spitfire gave Dash wingpony because Dash doesn't push herself hard enough, right?

Well, we all remember the wonderful news reporting of the Foal Free Press, right?

It wasn't just the tornado, at almost every step her barely disguised contempt for anypony not as gifted as her shone through bright as day. She didn't just not care what other ponies thought, she had literally no interest in the feelings of other ponies and simply had no interest in whether those ponies not up to her standards lived or died.

Simply put, if you weren't a useful tool in her pursuit of joining the Wonderbolts you were less than an object, you were nothing. Even Dash was just a means to an end. Functional Sociopath. The only thing she cared about was herself and her own greatness and she was literally incapable of the act of empathising, putting herself in the place of other ponies. Even when directly confronted on her wrongdoings.

There was no active, deliberate malice, sure. Never said there was and I quite agree. Except perhaps here and there like in the scene where she forces her way past the team ahead of her, but that's more her not caring what happens to them again than her actually giving a damn about them once she'd gotten past.

But that all fits perfectly well with her being an egomaniac with sociopathic tendancies.

Do you have anything to say on Spitfire's 180?

Um. I assume she was aware of most things she did. She didn't see her knocking her teammates out of the way, I suppose. And she heard about the tornado, which is what got her kicked out... but still, my point still stands. Lightning Dust may not have been aware that Spitfire wasn't aware about what she was doing.

Should we spoiler discussion and comments about the documentary if we talk about it?

Ultimately I am slightly saddened by the possibility that the producer and makers of the feature might lose money over the project.
Not that I expect them to be rich off the proceeds. (Nor do I think they should) But I do wish them some rewards and compensation for their efforts.
The reason I think monetary loss is a possibility is because as exciting as the documentary is to us bronies, if seen from a non fandom perspective, it really is not exceptionally entertaining. Not saying it was bad, just rather generic documentary, imo. It serves to inform, but I am uncertain of its power to incite curiosity and interest among people that are not already predisposed towards ponies.*

*: I guess my own come back response would be
"But everyone will join the herd."

All I'm assuming is that what we see of her is typical of how she actually is. As we see nothing at any point that contradicts this, not even when directly confronted on nearly killing half a dozen ponies, I feel comfortable in my assumption. I could be wrong, she could have been tragically cracking under the pressure and desperately acting out her idea of the ideal wonderbolt despite her distaste for such behaviour, but that would require more assumptions on less evidence.

I don't really have much to say as far as Spitfire goes. I'm not sure there was a 180, in as much as she was both clearly wearing the mask of drill sergant and didn't possess the full information. We see her breifly without the mask when she catches up to Dash and then takes the appropriate, dangerously overdue action of removing Lightning Dust from the course before she kills somepony.

I am not sure about the necessity of spoilers, as it sure doesn't take up that must space in the thread. Yet.

I will say this: I am disinclined to pay to watch the documentary, at least at this point. Part of my problem is that I am disinclined towards buying purely digital goods, without some assurance that I'll be able to make use of it 20 years down the road. (Before you ask: Yes, I still have a working VCR and yes, I still have a working tape player. Thank you.) I am not familiar with scrnland.com and without a physical copy, I have no indication of how long that $13 spent will be available for viewing. Wait, wasn't it $7 a short while ago?

This doesn't mean I'm ignoring their request not to pirate the documentary. It just means that I'm not watching the documentary. I'm curious, but not enough to ignore the courtesy to the creators. Perhaps I will pay for it and watch it at some point, but for now I am simply documentaryless.

All I'm assuming is that what we see of her is typical of how she actually is. I'm not sure that being mean and inconsiderate automatically counts you as a bully. In fact, I get the impressing that Lightning Dust is too full of herself and busy practicing to spend time intentionally harassing someponies.

This doesn't necessarily make her nice, of course. But it makes her worst traits rudeness and hastiness, not intentional malice.

Aye. Personally I feel that would be defeating the purpose. If it's not in your name, it's not in your honor.

(I agree; I said that purely to troll people into thinking 'which clopfic have I read that might have been secretly written by Thanqol?')

Having shown the documentary to my mother and father, who are difficult people to get to sit down and watch an hour and a half of anything, I suspect you're talking out of your hat.

It was a thing I could show my parents, and have them get it and enjoy it. I think the real target audience is 'people who are aware of the fandom but don't understand it', and it's perfect for that role. It's not a tool for conversion and brainwashing, it's a tool to tell our side of the story - and that's exactly what I wanted it to be.

I didn't say people wouldn't enjoy it, in your example I would ask that would your parents (if they don't already do) have their curiosity piqued enough to watch FiM? If only to check out some episodes.
Also would they have paid money to purchase the documentary (course you have a copy so they don't need to) just from hearing about the fandom? Or purchase it to watch again because it's something interesting enough to own?
Now I am simply taking The JDL letter at face value that some of the Documentary makers still need to be compansated and is hoping to do so through sales. Subtract all the donors, is there enough interest out there to pay for the Digital release (or even physical copies) that would make them say, "hey, this whole project was financially worth it"?

I still don't think that was the point, in the same way that a documentary about Trekkies isn't designed to get people to watch Star Trek. It's just designed to show who these people really are.

Also would they have paid money to purchase the documentary (course you have a copy so they don't need to) just from hearing about the fandom? Or purchase it to watch again because it's something interesting enough to own?

This is very much the realm of business and marketing strategy, not the intrinsic quality of the thing.

Is there inherent interest from people on the streets who are thinking to themselves, 'gosh, if only somebody made a documentary about those brony people I keep hearing about'?

No. Of course not.

If you told someone on the street, 'hey, did you know that there are grown men who like My Little Pony?' their answer would be, 'what, really?' and they'd want to find out more about these strange people. That might draw them to see the thing and if they like it they write reviews, tell their friends, put it on facebook, and other people start drifting in.

What people want is immaterial. What you can make them want is business.

I had a game go bad, once, Nd decided that if I was going to go down I would take the DM's universe with me. So I spent mints crafting the eldritch horror from beyond the stars I would summon if things when south.

The hellbeast known only as "KoolAid Man" is a necromantic horror, a bowl of sentient, possessed diamond- substance which contains its own universe, powered not by physics by but magical processes which require the blood of powerful sorcerers. The 'perspiration' is actually time-looped tears from the tragically forgotten, cooling down the nuclear processes of an entire contained universe through sympathy, where all who feel tragedy touch their lives slowly burn out as this existence-spawning energy radiates through them. The presence of Kool-Aid Man in a universe signals it's eventual demise, as entropy kicks it up three magnitudes, placing the burden of support, the onus of existence of both universes onto the one in which he finds himself.

Kool-Aid Man made a single appearance at the end of the campaign, after finishing the arcane rituals to bind his path and then to set my death as the trigger. The enemy, assuming I was the villain and that I had started "monologuing" cut me down. I handed the full stack of compiled information to the DM – he had agreed to everything, but never seen it all in one place at one time – and narrated that upon my death, the very walls of reality itself buckled and shook, rippling, until a weak point had been found. The last thing Istanvar the Enchanter heard was the sickly noise of existence tearing in painful birth, and a deep, foreboding "Oh, YEAH".

Well well well, look at what has recently turned up in a toy magazine. *Kind of-Maybe-Sort of Spoilers?* (http://www.derpyhoovesnews.com/toy-fair-magazine-leaked-alitwicastle-found/)
Well, I think it's pretty safe to say now that Alicorn Twilight is happening.

Maybe,
Though someone commented it could also be a badly colored Cadance. I doubt it, but then again I was at the stores last Sunday and one of the newer Luna toys gave her a purple not too far off from Twilight so... *shrug*

The more that time passes, the less bothered I am about the Alicorn Twilight debate because I'm starting to really get into the mindset that this will just be a one-episode deal for the season 3 finale solely to justify the toys.

I'm wondering if the whole Royal Coronation thing and toys is a giant troll by Hasbro. Maybe all the raving in the fandom made someone at Hasbro think it would be cool to make up an event that actually has nothing to do with the show but just happens to make it look like the rumors are true. I can just imagine them cackling to themselves while throwing barrels of gasoline on the fire.

After all, the synopsis and title for the final episode doesn't seem to have anything much to do with a coronation, unless we're missing something (which I suppose is quite likely). M.A. Larson also seemed to be having a lot of fun on Twitter when the episode synopsis was revealed. I wouldn't be surprised if they fooled us all.

I don't know. I wouldn't say Cadance and Shining Armor turned out awesome, in fact I wouldn't be the least bit sad if we've seen the last of them (unlikely though), and I didn't exactly cheer their return in S3. Hmm I think there's a knock-off line of "You might be a brony when..." jokes to be made from situations just like this.

If you spend 10 minutes debating with your 4-year old daughter that the proper term is "Zap Apple" and not "Rainbow apple"...
If the abbreviation 'NMM' doesn't translate first to Nexus Mod Manager when discussing the modding community...
If being asked to help bake cupcakes causes you to hide all the cutlery in the kitchen...
If asked for the 6th element on the chart and your response isn't Carbon...
If you're too party to drunk...

Hey, talking about writing fanfics... (http://24.media.tumblr.com/a5c6c917b4286b32e7a221f2447a9f64/tumblr_mh2gnuKxy31rtzl8mo7_1280.png)

Heehee, nice.

My one thought on the whole issue is, remember last year. Remember how it turned out awesome?

I agree. I totally look forward to the season finale, wings and all. The show has been fairly consistant with season openers and finishes so I trust that they will keep at least that status quo going.

Well well well, look at what has recently turned up in a toy magazine. *Kind of-Maybe-Sort of Spoilers?* (http://www.derpyhoovesnews.com/toy-fair-magazine-leaked-alitwicastle-found/)
Well, I think it's pretty safe to say now that Alicorn Twilight is happening.
The first thing I notice is that "Twilight" is taller than the other ponies. The second thing is that Hasbro toy devision has never seemed to get the colors for Luna and Cadance right. Heck, I've seen Luna toys that I was sure was Twilight (or maybe even Midnight) at first glance.
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111224060925/mlp/images/0/00/PrincessLunaFashionStyle_L_unknown.jpg
That's a very purplish Princess Luna.

The third is that this isn't even the first time we've seen wings on a unicorn, and those sure don't look like pegasus wings.
http://www.toyreviewdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/20120104-150651.jpg
Yes, I realize Rarity had wings in Sonic Rainboom. That doesn't mean the toy devision won't slap wings on any pony they want.

Ultimately, with this being a Crystal Empire set and only three other of the main cast there, I'm thinking we're looking at a purplish Cadance rather than an alicorn Twilight.

Even the wings are like previous Cadance toys.

I don't know, that tiara she is wearing looks suspiciously similar to the Element of Magic, and the window on the right of the playset looks like it is shaped like Twilight's cutie mark.

This feels like a reach. The top of the band of the Element of Magic is decorated with filigree, not spikes. It's set with many small jewels below the main one, not one singular jewel. And the main jewel is not a sphere. Can't speak to the window, never having examined or purchased any merch.

I feel like the question of what Celestia wants to use Discord's magic for really needs a canon explanation. Nothing aired this season so far has me more curious than that right now.

Showlestia is technically pink (http://kefkafloyd.deviantart.com/art/Princess-Celestia-Color-Guide-199522424?q=gallery%3Akefkafloyd%2F28942848&qo=2) as well. Admittedly, it's pretty close to the lightest shade of pink possible and nobody would actually call it pink (since it's white), but nevertheless it's pink.

Ever since I found out that that Trixie mare was seditious my life has changed. Wow. I just rewatched (listened to) Green Isn't Your Color. For such a great episode, it was a terrible story.

Fluttershy kept doing what she hated because Rarity told her "she must". That's it? Did she ever wonder why Rarity cared so much about her fashion career? It doesn't make sense. And while we're on not making sense, Twilight's plan to ruin Fluttershy's career was halted by Rarity showing up and applauding her show. The reason that made everyone else realize how "good" the show was, was because Rarity was wearing clothing that showed she knew about fashion. So, then, what, is Photo Finish just secretly bad at her job? She may be the professional, but when a whole crowd of..whatever they are, applaud an obviously terrible and sabotaged performance just because "that pony knows about fashion", then something is wrong.

But in the end, they all learn their lesson, right? Nope. Pinkie Pie never learns hers. Dear Princess Celestia. Sometimes, it's better to break a promise, if it's for the good of everyone, and does nothing but fuel a hated career and tons of jealousy. Your faithful brain-dead servant, Pinkie Pie.

Uh. This is Rarity we're talking about. Rarity caring about other people's fashion careers is like the must 'duh' thing I can think of, let alone 'making no sense'.

And while we're on not making sense, Twilight's plan to ruin Fluttershy's career was halted by Rarity showing up and applauding her show. I don't necessarily agree. If Twilight betrayed that trust she'd have betrayed that trust. It wasn't her place to do that, only to encourage the two to talk to each other, which she did.
