I've been building a SAD Ultimate Magus (Beguiler/Wizard) for a friend's campaign, but I have found myself stuck on what metamagic to take to make the most of the Ultimate Magus ability.

So far, the most useful I can find is sacrificing a high level spell from Wizard to apply Heighten to a spell like Glitterdust to amp the Save DC up to 2+INT+my highest spell level. Most of the other metamagic doesn't seem to be as useful, since I can't affect spells above 1st level at level 8, and 2nd at level 9. This prevention leads me to believe my best bet is to stick with the lowest metamagic I can until much higher levels where I can start sacrificing high Wizard spells to Persist low level spells like Invisibility, or high Beguiler slots to Empower or Repeat mid level Wizard spells.

What is the best metamagic feats to go for, considering I can't affect my highest level spells? I'm a Focused Specialist Conjurer (banning Evocation, Enchantment, and Illusion), but won't be going into summoning, if that helps to give better perspective.

Wait, you're making Beguiler the primary side? That's a bit unusual.

With a standard Wizard/Beguilder UM, I'd suggest Fell Drain. Fell Drain Hail of Stone is always fun, and it's only +2.

Also, you'll never be able to Persist stuff, at least not without MM reducers. Even if you take ultimate Magus to level 10, it caps out at +5.

I'm making Wizard the primary side.

Also, am I reading the Ultimate Magus entry wrong? I thought it said that the level of the spell to be augmented can't be higher than 1/2 class level. I thought "to be" augmented meant that it couldn't APPLY metamagic to spells higher than that level, not that it can't ADD numbers higher than that level. It didn't look like it said anything about the maximum slot or spell you can sacrifice to boost a spell.

Oops sorry, I misread it. Anyway, I'm not sure how many Beguiler spells there are worth persisting, especially at the cost of a 6th level slot.

Gnome Illusionist 1 / Beguiler 1 / Master Specialist 3 / Ultimate Magus 10 / Shadowcraft mage 5

Heighten your spells to have 100% real-ness without having to jump through hoops.

Low-cost high reward metamagics are going to be your best friends. Extend Spell comes to mind immediately. Generally look out for 1-3 costing metamagics. If the metamagic you're looking for is 4 or higher it better be Quicken, Twin, Repeat or Persistent (all nice buys btw).

For what it's worth, I started a thread like this alittle while ago. Feel free to take a look at the suggestions there:

Depend of the role you want to get.

Heighten and sculpt spell are some great metamagics to get your control spells in beeing of the beguiler side or the wizard side
