So i have a fighter in my game who is using a spiked chain. i have never really had players who utilized tripping and im not entirely clear on how the chain works, its description didn't tell me much.

what i want to know is:

1. how is a trip attempt separate from a normal attack?
2. can she attempt to trip as an attack of opportunity?
3. Dose she do damage on a trip attack?
4. if she tires to trip and fail, then lets go of the weapon to avoid being tripped herself, dose the monster then have the weapon since it was holding it last?

1. Trip targets touch AC, doesn't deal damage, and results in opposed check (Str+misc. vs. Str/Dex+misc.). If the attacker wins the check, the defender falls prone. If the defender wins, it can attempt it's own trip check vs. the attacker. The attacker can drop it's weapon to avoid this counter-trip.

2. Yes.

3. No.

4. No. The weapon falls to the ground (since the monster may not have been holding it, but just yanking the leg or other appendage the weapon is touching).
