What: Giant in the Playground Meet-Up. Happens every year. Get together. Tell stories. Meet new people. Greet people you already know. Play Werewolf. Play new games people have just bought. Sometimes go out to eat. Fun times for all.

When: 6 to 7 PMish

Where: The Serpentine Hall. Top of the escalators, near the exit/entrance to the skyramp that leads to the mall. Facing back toward the RCA Dome turn to your right and search for a usually large group, sometimes small.

How: Ride the escalator nearest to the Circle Mall up. Step carefully off the escalator and turn left. Take a sharp turn left again toward the hall leading back toward the exhibition halls. Search for a usually large, sometimes small, group of people who will hopefully wave back at you. Maybe even have a sign saying GitP, or something.

Why: Did I mention the games? Meeting new people? Fun?

I don't want to just use a small smily and get warned for minor spam, so instead I'm posting to say I'll be attending. :smalltongue:

Looking forward to it. I'll be saving money up for it this year, since I'd rather go to Gencon than say, get more Magic cards.

I'll be attending, of course. Can't help but go, really, living in Indy like I do.

I already have a room at the

Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre Hotel
31 West Ohio Street
Indianapolis, IN 46204

...with two double beds. So if there is anyone who'd like to share, I have room for two. One in the other bed, one on the floor.

I'll be at GenCon again. Like last year, my kids (12 and 11 by that time) will be joining us. I'll be arriving on Wednesday, and this year we're staying until Monday. We figure it beats the hell out of driving home at night on Sunday.

As usual, I will try to stop by a meetup but it's going to depend on my overall schedule. I know I have plans for 7:00pm-ish on Thursday. If something I worked on is nominated for an ENnie, I'll have plans Friday evening. Saturday also has plans around 7-ish. So at the least Thursday and Saturday evenings look to be possible for me to stop by and say hellos and such.

I'm going to the Pennsic War this year, which will eat my vacation time, but I'm leaning pretty strongly towards showing up Friday night and staying through Sunday again.

You might want to just get a one-day badge this time if you're only staying one day.

Nope. Went back to university this year, cannot afford the flight and room and such. Very sad that I won't get to see you guys and attend the awesome. I shall strive to scrimp and save for next year though. Please take lots of pictures and post them so I can live vicariously through you!

Your choice to have it mailed or you can get it there. Note that this year they're charging a small fee to deliver via USPS, and a slightly larger fee to deliver via FedEx. (There always was a FedEx fee; the USPS fee is new, though.)

Alternatively, you can pick it up at the convention center.

Pro Tip: get it mailed. The line for picking up badges is outrageous. While they made improvements last year such that it moved fairly quick, it was still a several hour wait.

How much is the fee? I'm going to get it regardless, I just need to put together a plan, as I can't afford the badge itself right now.

Just looked. Never mind. IGNORE ME!

I remember you guys saying Zeb might not be able to make it. Is he gonna get to?

I looked at where the Alexander is, and it's not very close. It's not THAT far, but still not close. It is however quite close to the downtown location of my favorite restaraunt:smallbiggrin:.

Edit: Just double checked that, apparently it's not that close. About the same distance as it is from the convention center.

All of the above. :)

Maybe I will, on different days. The Han Solo costume is the best of the three, mostly because there is no hat or bandana, which keeps your head cooler.

However, Indy's satchel (gas mask bag) is handy for con loot.

Or go on Wednesday, before the con opens. Still a queue, but it's a queue, not an ordeal.

ALSO, be nice to the people looking after the line. If they're wearing a tshirt, they know approximately negligible amounts more than you do, and have negligible further control than you do over the line, especially on Wednesday and Thursday. Some of them have never been to GenCon before. They're volunteers, and may have signed up twenty minutes ago, handed a tshirt, told to manage a line of vociferous gamers and left to it. If they're wearing a black shirt with red and white on it, they're Captains or Deputies and have much more seniority, but also deserve to be treated with niceness.

Anyway, it's not looking good for me this year. :smallfrown: I'm busy, trying to do a 2-year research Masters in like 14 months, and I can't afford to fly to the States every year anyway. I'm really sad to be missing it, though!

I am a firm "No freaking clue" right now. As it stands, I work in the Circle Center mall. (Free parking!) But I know that one of the other managers wants to go too. So I believe I'm giving her the ultimatum, she gets either Friday OR Saturday, but she's not getting both. Of course, there is also a plan being formulated where I get stolen back to my old store, in which I lose the parking pass :smallfrown:

Either way, my plan is to again make it at some point, with a 1 year old Gracie in tow.

A note for people who love to eat (and are 21, I guess) :

Everything is always crowded downtown during Gencon. One good refuge: walk to the Old Spaghetti Factory, and go up the big wooden staircase to the bar upstairs. There are almost never many people up here, even at the height of the con, and there is plenty of space and good service.

There is a chance I'll be living in Indy this year. (Still have to wait until March 15th to find out where I'll be going)

But I already have a badge, and a plan to request Gen Con week off. So we shall see how things go.

So step one) See where I am living
step two) Ask for time off
step three) ????
Step four) Profit.

And I know the underpants gnomes had only 3 steps, but I'm complicated ok?

Nah, park at the garage on Pennsylvania St that's half a block up from Scotty's on the other side of the street. Their prices went up last year, but it was only from 9/day to 10/day. I've always parked there for Gen Con, it's cheap and not that far. Last year I dumped my car there Wednesday night and left Sunday night, 40 bucks to park the whole con. Sure, there's the outside lots, but meh, outside lots.

There's a very good chance I won't be able to go this year. :/ Gonna try, but it's iffy. Right now I'm actually homeless, so it depends on if I can find a place and keep my job, or if I'll have to move back in with my dad, in which case it might well be years before I can get another one. ...Again. Stupid mountain retirement areas...

Do you all meet every night of the con?

2013-03-05, 01:29 PM
I stay at one of the other Marriott's attached to the convention center because they have a garage and I can just park my car and leave it.

We usually meet every night at one of the upstairs locations. I'm getting my nice tax return and although catlover's school starts on the 12th, we'll be there Wed - Sun. I'm easy to find, I have long dark red hair, it's usually in a braid and I usually wear dark colors.

Hello little pixie!

There's a big mix of ages, I've seen babies, toddlers, kids, with their parents, young teens, older teens, people my age (I'm 23 now), people in their 30s, 40s, 50s, right up to real old gamers.

It might be a nice idea for you to volunteer, I found that a really good way to get to know some people at the start of my first year. I've found lots of friendly people of all ages who are happy to let someone by themselves tag along. The Playground meet-ups are also a good way to find some people to hang out with!

And pick games and stuff you're interested in and buy tickets in advance. If you've got stuff to do, you won't be wandering around feeling lost.

Who knows, you might meet your new best friends at a game or volunteering or at the Playground!

If anyone's looking for an off-the-grid game at the con, I'm running the Halloween Horror scenario for the local shop's annual Halloween party, and would like to give it a test or three before actually inflicting it on the poor victims in the store's basement. :smallamused: Pathfinder's the system. I've made a stack of pregen characters for the players to choose from, and while they're core (at least one of each core class) + Ultimate Equipment only, I'd like to make sure I haven't missed anything that gives away a free win/solve the mystery button, as well as test for the time it takes to run and the difficulty of the encounters. I'm adapting the old Tarus' Banquet adventure that was the web expansion for Libris Mortis, because it's both appropriate to the theme and has branching encounter options depending on how the evening goes.

I'm not certain yet, but I'm pretty sure I won't be at the convention until Friday evening. If anyone would like to give it a try, let me know.

The druid was a casualty of the polymorph nerfs, which were bluntly necessary. I think they could have done better by the druid than "as Beast Shape #", though, even though before it was just "as polymorph."

I'm actually unhappy with the druid pregen, and will probably redo at least the item build (for starters, wild armor so the AC doesn't go through the floor when wild shaped), and promise to make the animal companion as boss as possible (while not making it a velociraptor, if I can manage it). We're kind of drifting from the thread topic now, though.

Yep, RPG1341925: Castles & Chemo Super Dungeon Crawl (https://www.gencon.com/events/41925) is Friday at 2. The Pathfinder version is the following day at the same time. Don't worry about getting the tickets for them; I'll get that taken care of.

The Pathfinder session, by the way, still has slots (the 4e session also has a few slots remaining). So, if anyone's interested, go to the campaign page (http://igg.me/at/CastlesAndChemoConFund/x/1596880) to get in on those. Only a week left! :O

Zherog

I'd prefer the PF slot. I have no idea, actually, which I'm assigned to. I'm glad to hear there is a PF version, since I don't know much at all about 4e.

AngelSword
2013-05-10, 02:25 PM
Well, originally, I only had the 4e version, but since the first campaign hit the "Dual System" stretch goal, things are going to be for both 4e and Pathfinder, anyway. So I figured I'd make a slot for both.

Currently, you have a 4e slot. I don't know if the PF session will fill up, so I may find other methods of getting those filled.

Zherog
2013-05-17, 11:36 AM
If I could get switched to the PF without any undue hassle, that would be great. Otherwise, I'll view it as an opportunity to re-visit 4e's rules and gameplay.

*

In other stuff, folks here may be interested in this IndieGoGo campaign (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/get-industry-pros-to-gencon) to get some game designers to GenCon. As of right now, for a $25 donation you'll receive 57 PDFs from 25 different gaming companies. I know Christina and Owen personally, and have worked with Amanda. I can tell you that all three are good people who just need a bit of help raising the funds to get out to the summer Cons. Whether you chip in to help get them there or just to score the massive package of PDFs, either is good enough.

Note: I have permission from Roland to post the above link here; I wasn't sure, so I checked in the bossmeister.

I seem to have angered Gen Con. The way that I'm filling my slots is apparently "expressly forbidden," and should've been cleared with them first. D:

As a reminder to everyone, event reg opens up tomorrow at noon.

Also, anyone still looking for a rooming situation? Had a few local friends planning on sharing a room, but due to unplanned events, I do have a spot (I'd guess two eventually, though I'm not certain about that) now open. If I get up to 4 people as I'd like to, it'll be $50ish dollars a night from each person. Staying at the Courtyard by Marriott Downtown Indianapolis, right near the convention center.

I think it's just a verbal thing, considering this quote from the last email:

Unfortunately, we're not really going to be able to sort this out before Sunday. Thankfully, since you don't want people to be able to register for the event directly through the system, that shouldn't be an issue in figuring out the details.

The room is $201 per night, from Wednesday (14th) to Sunday morning (18th).

I already have a room at the

Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre Hotel
31 West Ohio Street
Indianapolis, IN 46204

...with two double beds. So if there is anyone who'd like to share, I have room for two, maybe three.

I believe it's $804 divided among however many people. Not $804 per person. That would be insane unless the place also carried you around the con in a palanquin of some kind.

I also no longer need one ticket for reasons. Potentially both.

Pah! Maybe this year I'll pass the first round! First year I got Dimli and the other guy was better than me. Second year I got Serena (this was before her deck even had artwork) and third year I got Eve. Let me tell you, three people trying to beat each other as Eve takes a while. This year, I'm hopeful to at least make it to the second round.

Can somebody show me a picture of one of their Giantitp badges? I was hoping to make one for myself.

This is the photo I took after GenCon 2010. It's not a great picture, and I probably still have the badge around here somewhere, but I don't know where my camera is either.

I will be at GenCon, but it looks like I've got events scheduled during the meet-ups.

There's usually a group or two (or three) of us that generally navigates the Exhibition hall together. The meet-ups are more like end-of-the-day "relax and hang with cool people" where we discuss the cool new things we've seen/bought, maybe some quick pick-up games or a not-so-quick game of werewolf. Dinner at the food court or Steak n' Shake usually follows. Sometimes we sit around talking and playing games for a couple hours. Sometimes it's show up, say 'hey everybody' and scoot because people have events to get to or are really hungry/tired after a long day. If you really want to hang with some of us (and really, why wouldn't you? We're awesome), I'm sure someone would be alright with meeting up outside the regularly scheduled meets and exploring the con with you.

Forgot all about this thread. I will be there and I will try to make it to the meet up.

Wasn't sure if we were going to make it this year. We had some group drama that made us unsure of our ability to afford a room and we weren't sure if we wanted to hobo-con it.

Huh in the years that I've been doing will call for my badge, I have never waited anything like that long. Then again I didn't go in 2011 and I understand it was a huge problem that year. Last year I waited 10 mins tops. Which is the longest I've ever waited.
Now waiting in like to buy my ticket at the door like I did for the first two years of Indianapolis and the last two years of Milwaukee, that took a long time

Is anyone going to be in town on Wednesday evening? We get in Wednesday around 5-6pm. We leave sometime Monday morning. We have dinner plans for Wednesday and Thursday, and Saturday afternoon I'll be playing in AngelSword's game. I also will likely be spending time in the Frog God Games booth, signing Razor Coast products (and anything else of theirs I worked on, I imagine).

Other than that, as of now my schedule is free. I expect some will be taken up by the kids wanting to do specific things, and me wanting to take naps. ;)

Hmmm, if Will Call starts at noon on wednesday, how early should I get there to handle the line, but not annoy the Mariott by camping out overnight?

I'll probably swing by and wave ~5 or something. I like that other GitPers will be there, but I don't recognize any of the names (I post rarely, and generally lurk in the role playing forum), and college friends have dibs on my non event time (including one I haven't seen in a decade, at some point he WILL be tracked down despite having a full schedule).

Hmmm, if Will Call starts at noon on wednesday, how early should I get there to handle the line, but not annoy the Mariott by camping out overnight?

They've said the Will Call will be open for 24 hours a day starting at noon on Wednesday (http://eepurl.com/DdCOv). I personally go sometime Wednesday afternoon / evening to minimize my line time while still ensuring I've got my badge and miscellaneous stuff. I'm guessing, though, that if you go during the night, you'll have no problem rushing through the line.

Here's the flyer for the event at the Colts Grille on Wednesday evening with Saltire Games and Mayfair (http://www.saltiregames.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/GenCon-SGI-Colts-Grille-events-2013.jpg). I will be there at 6:30ish with my family. In the interests of full disclosure, my wife's cousin is a server there, so I'm sort of biased, but the food is good and I think it'll be fun. I'll have my Elan patch from the Kickstarter campaign on if anyone else is coming.

Just something to toss out:

If you want to take a picture of someone's costume, just ask. However, if you're in the dealer hall, please don't do this right in the middle of traffic, or even worse, in an intersection. Step off to one side. It's much easier in the large, main concourses.

If you want to take a picture of someone's costume, just ask.

Super-solid advice. My wife and I always ask, and very rarely get turned down - and only then when somebody is in a hurry to get somewhere. I'll add that this is especially good advice when taking pictures of kids in costumes. My kids dressed up last year; lots of people took pictures. I expected people to take pictures - after all, they're adorable kids wearing adorable costumes. Unless we're in a rush - not likely - we'll say yes as long as the kids aren't in a cranky mood. (pro tip: even at 11 and 12, kids get cranky when they're tired or hungry. Hell, I'm almost 43 and I get cranky when I'm tired or hungry...)

Good stuff, Alejandro and JS!

I can't remember if I shared this, but:

There is an Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant fairly close to the convention. For whatever reason, while the main, downstairs area is always jammed with people during the con, there is an upstairs area (where the bar is) that always has open tables, and is much quieter and usually faster service.

I'm not sure why this is, I doubt a huge proportion of the con goers are under 21, but: This is a good place to go to eat without having to wait.

I'll be at the meeup this evening. I've got my GitP badge and I'm wearing my "I'm not a Geek! (I'm a level 12 paladin.) t-shirt today if anyone wants to be on the lookout. See you guys around.

For what its worth, I should be attending the next two days.

Alright, so I should be there tomorrow and/or Saturday. Be excited. I know you were all really hoping that I'd make it.

Yay!! Hope to see you both at the Meet-Up.

I should be down there tomorrow too, thanks to a fortunate quirk of scheduling at work. Suppose I should see if I can turn up my Playground ID

I fear that I cannot find the gathering. Do we have a sign?

You were really early. I'm only just heading down now at 6:20pm local; you can't count on people being there before the dealer hall closes, and then a lot of us get food, so 6:30-7:00 is the better bet.

Hrm. I believe I'm in the right place, but realistically have no idea. Of course, I'm also extremely late. I'll try tomorrow.

The second floor of the Serpentine Lobby, which is the lobby at the Maryland Street entrance, where the coupon book pickup is. You're probably looking for a big circle of people playing Are You a Werewolf, or at least that's what we did this evening. Tomorrow I'll be wearing a suit, trench coat, and fedora, so that might give us away a bit.

Cool; having someone specific to look for should help. Turns out "look for a group of people" isn't super helpful at a big con. Suppose I really should have expected that...

Hopefully you'll come by tomorrow today. I'll try to keep an eye out for new people.

I think the problem is that I don't know exactly where the location is.

I believe it's right behind the escalators that are right by the skyway to the mall. I could be wrong, though

Yes, that is where the meet-up was. :smallfrown: I kept looking for both of you, but I saw no one looking confused that was for us. I'm sorry you guys missed us. :frown:

Next year, I'm thinking of making a flag pole for us.

My new lovely board games are all home safe and sound. I'm also there, by chance, with them.

Thanks for the fun time guyz.

Zeb and Alarra used to bring a sign, but situations change and they are no longer able to take it with them to the con.

I great time was had (even though way less people showed up to the meets than previous years). New games, old games, Mad Quao, Boss Monster (Thank Reina!) and more. Got knocked out of the RDI tournament, but I at least made it to the second round this year. At this rater of improvement, I should win in 4 years.

Including food, the gifts for other people, the badge and my share of the room, I spent over $800.

It was a good con:smallamused:

Indeed it was! I got knocked out first round...within two rounds. And the game was over the next turn. I never knew Fleck the Bard was so brutal :smalleek:

Made it home safe and sound with (I hope) everything we brought and bought. Great seeing everyone, enjoyed the meetup times! Hope for the same next year (already planning for it) after I recover from this one.

Sorry I missed everyone this year. I did see druid and Catlover, but Catlover was taking a picture in costume (good costume) and I didn't want to bother you two.

I do think a sign is appropriate because the Serpentine Hall is no longer labeled as such. We'll figure something out next year.

:smallsigh: 360 days until GenCon...

Well, I got home with all my stuffs, safe & sound.

Next year, I will bring a sign. As I stated earlier, I'm thinking of a flagpole staff and I'll place a banner on it so everyone can see us, hopefully.

You shouldn't have worried, I always enjoy meeting other playgrounders! Next year? Yes, more playgrounders and more GenCon!

Matched Kendra's new little kitty with your previous gift Lex-Kat, they look so cute together. Put my new one with the other ones, and they look good in the cabinet. :smallcool:

Yes, we have a sign. Currently it's stuck somewhere in our storage unit though. I'll see if I can get it there with me next year and then maybe pass it on to someone that drives to the con and they can bring it along with them.

Made it home Sunday night but had to work Monday morning as well as Monday night and Tuesday morning and Tuesday night so I haven't had time to take stock of things or even really go over all my loot.
All in all good con. Much better than last year. Last year was probably the crappiest con I had attended in all my long years. This year was good and all is right with the world again. I missed the meet ups once again. I'll try again next year. This year my wife and I tended to be busy about that time each night. I did manage to do the brew bus tour this year. unfortunately I ended up with a headache starting before I left and it ballooned into a huge migraine, on the bus, which severely dampened my ability to enjoy any drinking. :smallannoyed:

@Angelsword Picture three, the guy in the front of the picture walking towards you is a friend of mine. That would have been mere moments before my wife and I would have arrived to get our badges.

The line was crazy long to get your badge if you went in the afternoon (so why would you really?) but it was less than five minutes to get our badges when we went in the evening.

That picture was taken at roughly 0200, and was pretty full there (in terms of the physical space marked out for the queue). So I greatly appreciate the thought to have my badge mailed to me.

I'm not sure what 0200 means but if the line was longer than five minutes then it must not be the time I thought it was. I just don't like the idea of risking my badge to the mail. I started doing will call after Gen Con couldn't manage to get my badge to me and it was sent to Will call instead. (They didn't put my apartment number on address for some reason)

Either way it's funny that you got a picture of one of my gaming group. I'll have to direct him to this thread.

thank you lex-cat. Then it definitely was not the time I was there. I was there around 9 pm and the line was very short. The line was very long at 4pm when i first arrived but i don't like waiting in long lines so i went back when the line went down. Must have been a bunch of people trying to get there badge late.

I'd be glad to take it, but I can't guarantee attending every single year since it usually conflicts with the Pennsic War, which I go to on even-numbered years. (This year the war was displaced by a large fireworks convention, so I got to do both.)

I'd think Krade or maybe another local would be a safe bet. Whoever it is, they must be willing to hold onto it, and able to go to the beginning of the Meet-Ups.

Yeah, I could take it. I'm the only local that consistently has the funds to go AND isn't constantly busy with other stuff (El J).
