Pokemon: Why Are There No Famous Breeders? ~A Pokemon MANLY Pink Wedlocke

I've never done a Let's Play before, so it's rather an experimental measure.

I saw the rules for the Wedlocke only recently, and was inspired. I don't know if there are any Wedlockes already on the forum, or even if there are any MANLY Pink Let's Plays, so meh.

Bit of a warning, now. I'm pretty sure the hack is far from finished, so it will probably be cut dangerously short.

Rules of the Pokemon Wedlocke: (from Marriland)
1) Don't talk about Wedlocke If a Pokemon faints, it is dead, never to be used again. (I figure this is a good chance to make myself actually do this one)
2) Only the first Pokemon seen in an area can be caught.
The Wedlocke differs from the Nuzlocke in this regard.
~Genderless Pokemon can never be caught.
~If you have an even number of Pokemon in your party, you must catch the first Pokemon you see, barring repeats, regardless of gender.
~If you have an odd number of Pokemon in your party, you must catch a Pokemon of the opposite gender of the unmatched Pokemon.
For example, if your starter is male, you must catch a female. After that, you can catch either a male or a female. Say you catch a female. You must then catch a male. And so on and so forth. Once you have a full team, you catch the first Pokemon in a route with a gender.
2b) No repeats of Pokemon or Pokemon lines. If you have a pidove, no catching a tranquill, and so on and so forth. (I know this rule generally applies only to if you already have that specific Pokemon, but I like diversity)
3) All Pokemon must be nicknamed.
This means that a Pokemon's death is a personal event. This little piece of data had a name and a personality, and you should feel terrible if you let it die. (Honestly, I've always nicknamed Pokemon anyway)
4) Your Pokemon are paired, male and female, and can only switch between pairs.
Only one male and female can be paired, and they are paired until the death.
You can only switch out to your current Pokemon's partner.
If a Pokemon dies in battle, its partner must avenge its death or fall alongside it, regardless of the situation presented. (In the case of double or triple battles, do what feels right.)
If a Pokemon's partner dies and they survived, they may gain a new partner from the PC or from the wild.
I will not be using the 5th rule, never use the PC, because it's a bit too much for my liking.

Other questions:
What if Whirlwind/Roar/etc. change your Pokemon team?
Then you continue fighting on using the new team.
What about double battle deaths?
The original rules (created by Marriland) say that you continue on with a mixed team.
What about same sex pairs?
Only if you request them specifically, and only in the order they're caught.

Chapter 1: Embarking
"Hello, folks. My name is Mikhail. I'm a Pokemon Breeder working with Professor Oak. We've been together for the last 15 years. Lately, there are strange Pokemon not native to Kanto coming here in swarms. They're nothing like I've ever seen before, and the Professor has asked me to go on a journey to catch and breed them to learn more about them. Being a breeder, I don't care much for genderless Pokemon, especially since the Ditto have been scarce with the outbreak of new Pokemon. I'm also working on a treatise on the pairing of Pokemon not traditionally in the same egg group. How they get along, how they interact. What it is that makes them tick; why they refuse to breed. It should be quite the journey."

Hmm, Snivy. He's calling it Tsutarja. From what we've observed, it appears to be in the field and grass groups. It does, however, have a shallow movepool, making breeding something of a chore.

The central character. A Pokémon breeder who has worked for Professor Oak for fifteen years. Happily married to Clarice. Writing a doctoral dissertation on the breeding habits of Pokémon in pairs. After an encounter with a green-haired boy, he has received the Gift. The Gift enables him to communicate with Pokémon, a skill not just anyone has. Professor Oak has asked him to collect the gym badges.

Mikhail's first Pokémon for his journey. He kept silent until Mikhail received the Gift. After being put to the task of defeating all the gym leaders, Nobunaga evolved, feeling his master's ambition coursing through him. The most level-headed of the party.

Mikhail's second Pokémon, and Nobunaga's partner for battles. Believes herself to be a goddess to be worshiped, akin to Mew or Arceus. She has an ability which makes her faster, and she speaks faster when she has gained speed.

Clarice: Mikhail's loving wife. Sent him a pair of Running Shoes and left a potion as a gift in the PC.

Professor Oak: Mikhail's employer. He has begun to lose his memory after a specific incident. Recently forgot Mikhail's name for the first time. Regularly refers to his grandson, Gavin, as Giles.

Gavin: Professor Oak's grandson. His grandfather often calls him Giles, his father's name. He is very aloof, rarely coming to visit his grandfather.

Dennis and Slade: Professor Oak's other aides. Lately, they have been very snide towards Mikhail.

I released my Oshawatt from his ball. He was a rather stoic creature, standing with his arms crossed. Unlike most Pokemon, he emitted no cry upon being released from the ball.
"Very well, then. Nobunaga, a Tackle if you please."
Nobunaga stood stock still for a moment, not responding to a crude look from the Snivy. The Snivy was an interesting specimen; it looked powerful. As it circled Nobunaga, he hurled himself at it, knocking it off balance.

The Snivy regained control, smashing its skull into Nobunaga's belly. Nobunaga's only response was to grab it roughly and hurl it to the ground.

That was all it took. The Snivy was out cold, and Nobunaga again had crossed his arms, staring into the distance as if nothing had happened.

I went home to see Clarice, but she was out. She had left a note that she wouldn't be back until later.
I strutted off towards Viridian City, when a little bird Pokemon spotted me. I released Nobunaga, hoping he would fend it off.

It charged Nobunaga, knocking him to the ground. "N-Nobunaga!" Nobunaga responded by kicking it, hard. The bird dropped, and I recalled Nobunaga to his ball.
If things were going to be that close, Nobunaga was going to need some training. It wouldn't do to have him permanently damaged; that could affect his offspring.
But there was one thing that nagged at me... Nobunaga hadn't given a battle cry that time, either.

I went to the Pokemon Center to heal Nobunaga. The nurse assured me that nothing permanent had been done to him.
A man sat outside the PokeMart, peddling berries, of all things. "Excuse me, Sir, far be it from me to tell you how to do business, but aren't most of these rather rare? Do you even turn a profit?"
He winked, and shrugged, offering no other response.
I headed for the PokeMart, to look at what they had to offer.

We each thanked the Professor, and Gavin left. The Professor called me over to tell me something.
"Now, obviously, the Pokedex isn't as useful to you, as a breeder, as it is to Giles, as a trainer. But I accounted for that, and gave you the function to see egg groups rather than some other things."
I nodded, and he continued speaking.
"Now, as a breeder, and with your thesis, you'll likely want to pair your Pokemon. Keep them working together, and only together. Things like that. I have one other recommendation. To keep a small control group, only catch the first specimen of compatible gender that you find in each route. Sound good?"
I nodded.
"Good! See you soon, Michel."
I began to leave, watching him stare intently at the package, as though the contents would suddenly reveal themselves to him. Clarice was still out, when I got back home. I sighed heavily. That was the first time the boss had forgotten my name.

Also, I've granted Nobunaga immunity to the death clause, at least at the beginning. Perhaps not the whole time.

I'm also running this game blind, so I'm not sure what's in the egg (I think maybe Zorua?) or what Pokemon are on each route. In this sense, I'll tell you what the next catch is (Having saved at the nickname screen) rather than giving a list of the possible catches. That being said, the first catch is (female) Petilil/Churine.

As a minor note(having played through a bit of the game now): if you catch a Munna, it may be better to either avoid evolving it, or wait(they seem to have at least a 75% drop chance for moonstoen when tamed) until it has a solid moveset, since Musharna don't seem to start with any moves other than ones from their earlier form in this mod.

Also, in the op you mentioned being worried about the mod not having converted very much of the game, correct?, From what I've played so far, up to level 70 at least, it looks to be fine:smallsmile:, with only a few slip-ups(an npc calling a gen V pokemon a cubone, and another unrelated one a marrowack, one npc mentioning team rocket instead of plasma, and the zoo by the safari zone)


edit: also, how are wild pokemon obtained in a city, or free tamed ones(obtained via egg, finding a pokeball with them, or winning a battle of some sort, etc.) treated in a nuzlocke/wedlocke?

In a Nuzlocke, "free" Pokémon are forbidden. Dunno about Wedlocke.

aye, you don't really have much choice for that one, even if you didn't want it:smallsmile:(hatches after about 1500 steps and immediately joins your team), on the plus side, it is a rare one, and fairly powerful.

If you're still running it(I've enjoyed reading it so far, keep up the good work:smallsmile:), you may want to be a little bit cautious after about lavender town, since, at least from the nuzlocke run I'm reading of the original fire red, manly ink is actually a bit higher in difficulty(as an example, the pokemon in the lavender town tower are levels 35-40, with the dojo in saffron having 45-50s, if I'm remembering those places correctly anyway)

For a moment, I stood there, wondering how the green-haired boy had disappeared.
"He has ambition."
I looked around to see who had spoken. There was no one around, just the bug catcher from before. I could hear him still spouting on about "dropping his stuff." The only other one around was Nobunaga. I guess I had released him by accident. I looked at him wistfully.
"...I like that."
My eyes widened. Had my Oshawatt just talked?
"Did..."
"What?"
"Waaaah!" I fell to the ground, landing roughly on my backside. I crawled away from Nobunaga, shaking slightly. "Y-you! You talked!"

He looked at me, arms crossed, as if nothing unusual had happened.
"Most of us do."
"The others...?"
"See for yourself. ...But you won't like it."
I reached into my sack, and felt around for Gaia's ball.
"Go, Gaia!"
The little green plant escaped from the ball, zooming around. She hadn't slowed down from the battle.
"Whydidyouleavemeintheball?Howcouldyouleavemeintheb all?Iwon,didn'tI?IwonandyoustuckmeintheballandnowI 'moutagainfornoreason!Youcan'ttreatagodlikethis!"
I blinked. Perhaps it was a good thing I hadn't been able to hear Gaia before. At least she was slowing down.
"Andyoucan'tevenhearme!"
Nobunaga gave her a meaningful look, and she stopped entirely.
"You mean?"
He nodded, solemnly.
"Yay! Now you can bow and scrape for me like I deserve! I am worthy of praise, not unlike Arceus! Worship me, human!"
At this point, I returned Gaia to her ball. I looked over at Nobunaga, scratching at the back of my head. "Are... are you all like this?"
"Not exactly."
I warily reached for Nailah's ball.
"N-Nailah! Go!"
"Lollipop, lollipop, ooh, lolli, lolli, lolli, lollipop! Badum bum bum..."
"Umm..."
"Ooh, a listener! How about another song..."
"N-no, that will be fine..."
"But I'm the Queen of the Wolves!"
I raised an eyebrow. "Aren't... you a dog-thing?"
"Don't be absurd. The Wolves are my band! We do pop songs! Let me sing one!"
"Uh..." I pulled her back into the ball.
"That was... interesting."
"Don't worry. Albert isn't quite so bad."
I nodded, hoping he was right. I released Sir Albert, praying to Mew for the best.
"Sir Albert, come on out!"
The Venipede appeared, shaking his head as if he had just woken up. "Good morning, dear Sir Nobunaga. Where is mine enemy?"
"No enemy. Just..."
"Ah, I see. The King speaks. Good morrow to you, Sir." He bowed, as well as a Venipede can. "I was knighted by you, and thus I must serve. I am the world's most noble knight's steed."
"Steed?"
"Yes. I allow small creatures to ride on my back. For shame that my companions will grow to be too much for one such as I."
"Uh... well, would... you like to go back into your ball?"
"If thou wish't, Lord."
I returned Sir Albert to his ball, and sat there, shaking my head. How... how could this be real? What had that green-haired boy done to me?
"Nobunaga, is that why you never..."
He shook his head.
"It was never worth my time before. That one. You saw how he interacted with his Pokemon, did you not? How he talked to them?"
"Wh-what are you saying?"
"He patted your shoulder. I believe that was no formality."
"You... you mean..."
"Yes. He spread the Gift."
"The... the Gift?"
"Some are born with the ability to speak to Pokemon. It is rare, and spreading it is unheard of."
"Then... how?"
"I don't know. I know of perhaps one with the Gift. Most people with it don't tell about it. After all, who would believe them?"
"Then... How do I..."
"You don't. Simple."
"But... Clarice..."
"You can try. But it won't be easy to show her, now will it?"
"But... what if I can spread it?"
"...I wouldn't suggest it. The Gift is both a blessing and a curse."
"It... is?"
He nodded. "Not only do you hear your own Pokemon, but the screams and anguish of any that you defeat. Do you wish that on your dear wife?"
I was silent. Did Pokemon really scream when they fainted? It was too much... too much to take in.
"Do not despair. I suggest we follow the one with ambition. At the very least, try to find an answer."
I nodded, and began to stand up.
"There is, however, one other matter of which to attend. Your Pokedex."
The Pokedex. I had forgotten. I lifted it from the sack, and scrolled to the page with Oshawatt. Nobunaga.
~Oshawatt: A Pokemon with Ambition. Sensible. Field group.
The others quickly followed.
~Petilil: A speedy Grass group Pokemon. Believes itself to be worthy of praise, perhaps such as Mew.
~Lillipup: A Pokemon that appears to like singing. Field group.
~Venipede: Believes itself to be a Valiant Knight's steed. Bug group.
"Oh, yes. One more thing."
"Oh, dear. What is it?"
"The egg."
He was right, the egg was moving. Quickly, at that. I grabbed it up, putting Nobunaga back into his ball, charging for the Pokemon center. I arrived, puffing and panting.
"You all right, dear? I am a doctor for humans as well." The Nurse Joy at the counter winked.
"Sorry, no, I'm happily married..." I said, before I realized she wasn't flirting with me. The egg rumbled again, giving me an excuse to leave quickly.

The Optional Ending:
Inside, Nurse Joy wept silently. An older man stood at the counter, shaking his head. "It's a damn shame, joy. A damn shame. But ye'll fin' yer man 'un day, y'know."
She wiped her eyes, sniffling. "I... I know. I just wish... I'd seen the ring before I said anything about being a doctor, you know?"
"It's a damn shame. But ye know, one day, 'e'll walk in 'ere, an' 'e'll ask yer if yer doin' anything 'at night. An on tha' note, ye doin' anythin' tonigh'?"
She began to grin. "N-no."
"Damn shame. Pretty girl like yer ought ta go out. Bahahahaha!"
She sniffed, wiping at her eyes. "You're a jerk, Jed."
"Aye, but if'n that ain't the truth."

I wasn't sure if I should include the optional ending, I was hoping that a bit of humor would soften the serious bits, but I'm not sure if it achieves that goal, or just makes it awkward.

Mkay, so we have some options here.

Madame Ill could get partnered with a Tynamo, bought from the Magikarp salesman, and has the nice distinction of having no natural weaknesses in a game where there were many less ways to remove Levitate's power.

I could go in and hope for a Woobat, which nicely covers Madame Ill's weaknesses to Fighting and Bug types. Unfortunately, the reverse is not true, as Woobat has weaknesses to Ice, Rock, Electric, and Dark that Madame Ill doesn't naturally cover.

The issue with trying for a Woobat is that I went into Mt. Moon and the first thing I saw was a (female, so it didn't count against me) Sandile, and I really don't want paired Dark types. I don't know what else is in that cave; one NPC suggests Roggenrola, but that would still create a pair of Pokemon that share a weakness (Fighting).
