View Full Version : Lords of Darkness!!!

The Abyss. A place of infinite chaos and infinite evil and yet vast pieces of it are ruled by powerful lords in a feudal system. And despite the supposedly ever-changing nature of the place, some of those lords have held power for eons beyond rememberance and are well-known throughout the Cosmos.

As with all things, the Abyss is an important part of the Cosmos - no matter how vehemently some might deny it. But what happens if suddenly one of the relatively minor but still obscenely powerful Demon Lords vanishes? If one whose rule has been established for millennia and upon whose actions countless individuals (demons or otherwise) had planned their lives? Chaotic and ever-changing as the Abyss might be, bureaucracy -or at least a version of it- is almost as ponderous and sluggish as in any other corner of the Multiverse. Or did you believe the Demon Lords who had control of a layer -or significant portion thereof- could ever rule entirely on their own? Abyssal layers are practically infinite in their own right, after all. No-one limited to one place and one action at a time could ever hope to control one by themselves.
So what happens if the ruling class of an Abyssal layer, those demons with enough power to function as vassals and heralds and generals to a Demon Lord suddenly find themselves without direction or higher authority? Presumably, things would get chaotic and bloody and ruinous even as they change. And that is the definition of interesting...

First gate, The Pit, Thousand Maws

It it is a day like any other; the blood moon hangs high in the scorched, red-black sky, chaos storms swirl overhead, throwing the occasional thunderbolt or meteor swarm or rain of maggots on those unfortunate to happen upon their path, the countless souls of the damned wail and despair and generally it is business as usual in Beradax's domain.
The first gate is busy; one of the primary access points for those fiends powerful enough to traverse between layers and important enough that they don't partake of the usual method of transportation in the Abyss (being slain by someone else and having your soul/essence carried as part of the soul trade). Denthanus is doing his usual job of vetting important visitors and eating anyone unimportant or suspect that manages to sneak in when it happens; reality screams.
The skies roar with the sound of a thousand lightning bolts. The ground shakes. The magma pools in the depths of the Pit overflow, belching forth a torrent of molten stone, beginning to flood the first gate. And every demon is hammered to the ground as if by an angry god. Darkness follows...

Denthanus wakens to find the rising magma having entirely flooded the gateway, while other demons are up and about, burning and looting the place. Whatever the massive disturbance was, it seems to have affected him far more than the lesser fiends, giving time to the apparent mass riot to gain momentum. As his vision clears, Denthanus sees a quarter of Balors -the standard death squad of Beradax's elite forces- directing the flow of the riot and ordering the lesser demons towards further destruction. Apparently, they have either forgotten him or thought him struck dead by the upheaval...

Nijith had been tasked with carrying an important cache of minor artifacts to the layer's main gate where a buyer was to appear soon. He had almost arrived along with his own Balor guards - the borders between sublayers and individual domains and the area immediately around them could not be teleported through due to their wards - when the wave of devastation knocks them to the ground. Nijith wakes up an indeterminate time later, to find his guard has gone insane, the four Balors having taken the cache from him and burning and breaking its very valuable contents...

Mortal corpse repository, The Frozen Depths

The corpses of the dead are an important resource in the Abyss. Significantly harder to obtain than in the mortal plane - since demons dissolve into bile and chaos essence when slain - but also far easier to preserve, they have a variety of uses. The Repository is a minimal wizard's tower standing in the middle of a vast frozen basin, enough amenities for the layer's necromancers to do their business and a practically infinite open space with the frozen conditions to preserve corpses indefinitely. Currently, it is filled with millions upon millions of frozen cadavers, only a small percentage of which come from slain mortals. The majority come from captured undead; foolish mortals that sought unlife as a way to escape their bargains with the lower planes, intruders from the Netherworld and Shadow planes, minions of demon princes that employ undead -primarily Orcus- all are captured and brought here. Then the souls of such intelligent undead are stripped from their bodies and sent to appropriate punishment while the bodies are used - vessels for demonic possessors, immortal bodies for faithful mortal worshippers and heralds that died, even bartered back to interested archfiends - the going rate for good looking vampires is rather high in many courts for example.
Yhak'Tisaph'assat is busy with one such vampire body's preparation when the Upheaval strikes; and incredibly powerful howling snowstorm blocks visibility beyond a few feet, hailstones the size of heads striking with the force of hammers, even as a great earthquake shakes the ground. Then a massive supernatural backlash striking like a deity's wrath.
Yhak'Tisaph'assat slowly returns to consciousness to find himself half-buried in the snow. The whiteout is over, having covered a significant percentage of corpses - the necromancer demon is not worried though; the arcanists here meticulously note the position of every corpse for later retrieval. What does annoy him is the quarter of Balors - one of Beradax's own death squads, that has already unearthed several dozen of the more valuable corpses in the vicinity and is stockpiling them for transfer without a word from the Demon Lady herself - Yhak'Tisaph'assat never liked thieves. Especially thieves stealing things from his own domain.

Castle Blackskull, abyssal vanguard training grounds.

Trying to train demons is easy - most of them are extremely intelligent. Trying to organize them in a proper army? That is what's all but impossible. Castle Blackskull, the towering keep with its obsidian and abyssal iron walls, its spiked towers and crennelations and its extradimensional bubble is not really such a training ground. It is where a sufficiently powerful, sufficiently intelligent, sufficiently persuasive greater demon first gets to beat lesser demons so they'll listen, then instructs them in the kind of pack or swarm tactics that will get them the most enemies slain and souls plundered, then gets to beat them because they challenged his authority, then loosely organizes them in the layer's vanguard units, then gets to beat them for fun.
Grashank is the latest in a line of such generals ever since his immediate predecessor got outsmarted by his trainees, separated from his guards and then eaten as a protest against excessive beatings. Grashank is a lot smarter and more diplomatic than said predecessor and so far has been highly successful.
None of his plans though provide any contingencies when a powerful dimensional upheaval disrupts the fortresses' defenses and knocks out every demon there. What's more, his latest batch of trainees have apparently succumbed to a form of insanity before Grashank could recover and are now behaving erratically, spreading mild but not very dangerous chaos. Grashank's own guards though -a quartet of Balors from Beradax's death squads- seems intent on spreading far more focused and effective destruction; they are busy tearing down the main keep and killing any insane lesser demon that ambles too close to them...

Zarkin -Beradax's main enforcer- is en route to Castle Blackskull with a column of reinforcements and his own personal Balor quartet when the upheaval strikes. By the time he recovers, he realized the entire column of demons has been knocked out of the sky not ten miles from the castle. Unfortunately, Zarkin takes longer to recover than the demons under his command. Fortunately, the demons seem to have turned against eachother, with four very insane and very angry Balors just finishing the last surviving lesser demons after a furious melee...

Succubus enclave, Mountains of Madness

Succubae might be lesser demons but still perform several fairly vital jobs in any abyssal domain. Usually frail, they are among the smarter lesser demon types and are also numerous enough to serve as a domain's messengers, clerks, scribes - and spellcasters. Also being perhaps the most charismatic demon type, they play an important part in any demon's court.
It is thus not unexpected for young succubae to be initiated by their elders into the labyrinthine, interlocking network of intrigue, espionage, alliances and enmities that forms the social structure of many demonic domains, despite mortals viewing this demon type as frivolous objects of self-indulgence and decadence - for decadence and selfindulgence usually are a far third behind survival and personal power. This is then the purpose of this remote enclave of less than a hundred small spires forming this complex in the Mountains of Madness.
It is here that one of Beradax's finest artificers has chosen to pass her time for the enclave is quieter than the more violent places in the layer, and provides both a pampered life and companionship. But lately, one of Beradax's finest generals has come to the enclave to find recruits among the succubae for new units in the army that will utilize the temptresses' lethal grace as a physical weapon. The artificer and the general have so far stayed out of eachother's way, given their entirely different lifestyles and duties but that is not to last.
The upheaval her strikes as a wave of hallucinations like those plaguing most untamed areas of the Mountains of Madness but of far greater intensity; by the time Ka'Rishta and Mary each recover in her own rooms from the utterly nonsensical and overwhelming phantasms, the rest of the enclave is burning. It isn't anything the succubae have done - the ladies are all completely immersed in lesser phantasms and dreams, apparently mostly pleasant, if untrue. But the balor guards Beradax sends to accompany her powerful vassals -four each for Ka'Rishta and Mary- are busy burning down the enclave, starting with their nominal commanders' own chambers!!!

Far higher than the Enclave and at the mountains' peaks, Savixal watches over the flow of chaos through the mountains, following Beradax's instructions in how tiny actions at the right places could direct it towards the desired outcome, like some ephemeral butterfly in the mortal plane beating its tiny wings only to cause a city-leveling storm on the other side of a continent.
But this Upheaval is far too powerful and far too sudden for him to direct; the wave of illusions and warped reality strikes at him directly, blasting him a dozen miles away. When he recovers he finds that he had been unbelievably lucky; landing behind a towering obsidian boulder in just the right way to both survive his fall and for the boulder to shield him from the following torrents of chaos the Upheaval sends in motion. As if determined to balance his luck, the sudden chaos-storm redirects the tortured reality around him. Savixal did not need guards in this place and did not want them. He'd finally convinced his lady to refrain from giving him a Death Squad anyway, so recently that he could still see the four Balors hounding his every move in his mind. Those absent Balors from his thoughts the storm tears forth and fashions his memory into reality; as soon as he wakes up, a quartet of very angry rage-demons is about to attack him.
This event is so unlikely -even for the place he's standing on- that the great demon immediately suspects malicious but intelligent interference. Regardless of his suspicions though, he first has to survive...

Nijith awakes, immediately propping himself up against the gate which he found himself hurled against. To his horror, his escort was vandalizing the package that was to be delivered.

"STOP!"

He summons magic to his fingertips, and punches through the natural shields that demons have to prevent such magic. Now, it is all up to them to resist being struck immobile with their own wills.

KA'RISHTA

Never overly fond of balors who seem to consider themselves above her and her armies, Ka'Rishta is at once furious at the balor's attack and elated at the chance to take some attacks at them. She chooses to divide her attacks, three of her arms attack at one balor, and three at another. Perhaps this display of force will cause the others to rethink their attacks...and if not, well, that would just keep giving her an excuse to take them out.

'This is not right.' Zarkin thinks as he regains his faculties. Whatever happened had quite a disturbing influence on his focus.
Seeing the Balors getting ready to attack him, he shoves thoughts about what has happened aside and allows his midness to come forth.
'Looks like someone is forgetting their place.'

A single moment is enough to reestablish his focus, yet he is not finished. Allowing the energies to curse through him further, his being becomes cooler than the strongest hoarfrost as he stands up and readies himself against the coming onslaught.

His mandibles flare and his pincers erupt out like spread wings. Yet his mouth merely opens into a toothy grin as a voice like grating stone rumbles forth, the words dripping with sarcastic malice, directed at four of the strongest demons in the abyss.

Mary

She rose slowly considering what could have happened - to knock her out was no small feat after all - but she could focus on that later.

Balor's burning down the place where all the inhabitants were immune to fire was unexpected, yet matched the primal nature of their kind well.

Unlike many she had no objection to them, they were powerful and knew it and so acted the part this was only natural, they also forced her to be on edge constantly a valuable trait in the abyss.

She examined them for a second before acting, a vorpal blade was deadly and this needed to be treated seriously, and she was not best prepared for this fight.

Instantly renewing herself with a Moment of Prescience, she then released Weird, caring more for assassins then the sleeping succubi close by.

Surveying the scene she prepared to trap the soul of one if them approached her, she always spent time trying to gain power over others but she was not sure she had achieved it here yet.
If nothing else it would buy her time.

Sevixal sat up, clearly shaken by the event that just transpired, he quickly stands and draws his sword as he stares at the beings recently torn from his mind, a large feral smile grows on his face, "Looks like my own mind is fighting against me! About time too!" Sevixals open hand becomes lit by Arcane Marks, his hand flicks up in a fraction of a moment and two large blasts of heat absorbing air freezing all in its path, and just as quickly he runs behind the Frozen Air, targeting the closest Balor with his sword, and unleashes a flurry of sword strokes on it.

Denthanus awoke, the lava lapping at his feet. At first, his eyes were wide, uncomprehending, confused. Then, as anger flooded back into his body, he rose, eyes narrowing, and hammer hefted. Denthanus let loose a massive roar, shaking the very foundations of the cave. Lesser demons would panic at the sound, though the Balors would most likely not fear their former lord. Denthanus strode towards the traitors, and as he did, his already massive form grew, ataining new heights and scraping the very top of the Pit. Poisonous soulfire dripped from his maw, and he let a low growl escape him. The butt of his maul struck the ground, and Denthanus reached out into the nether to summon his personal guards to him. "Maggots. Vermin. What is this? You abandon your posts, engage in senseless rioting? Do you think yourselves so mighty that you can escape my wrath? Cease now, and I may be merciful as I crush your skulls."

First, drawing within 60 ft of the Balors, and activating my Frightful Presence. Save DC is 37 or Shaken, and if anything in my radius is 4 HD or less(unlikely), they are Panicked on a failed save instead. Also casting Righteous Might. Growing to Gargantuan size. Not sure what the damage would be for a Gargantuan Earth Breaker, but it won't be fun for the Balors. Also checking to see if my Summon ability is still functioning, though I don't know that I have time to use it if it is.

Nijith
Two of the Balors stop in mid-swing. The other two turn to the greater demon and attempt to obliterate him by crushing Nijith with the weight of their fury. Unfortunately, the Implosion magic splashes off Nijith's resistance like so much water against a stone wall.

Ka'Rishta
The marilith warps through space to appear right next to the Balors. Then, striking almost two dozen blows all but simultaneously, she eviscerates two of them; the Balors explode in a torrent of fire and chaos, scorching anything nearby.
The other two Balors, furious at their comrades' destruction, turn upon Ka'Rishta with sword and whip but their attacks fail to damage the marilith general, striking ineffectually against her armor and iron-hard skin.

Zarkin
The four Balors turn to Zarkin and begin slashing with sword and whip. Unfortunately for them, Zarkin's physical resilience far surpasses that of lesser fiends. Unfortunately for Zarkin, one of the Balors gets really lucky and his flaming sword lands right at Zarkin's throat. Even more unfortunately for the Balors, that Balor does not get nearly lucky enough; his blade only does a small cut rather than sever Zarkin's throat.

Grashank
Grashank's spell carves a hole into the closest Balor's chest. The following blow adds a deep cut to go with that hole. Angry at being attacked but not particularly impressed, they all reach into the aether and summon four Mariliths to deal with the interloper. Eighteen swords slash into Grashank more than once, three of them landing hits more out of luck than anything else.

Mary
The succubus artificer finds the Balor guards rather annoying. She casts three spells in quick succession, the results ominous and pleasing; three of the Balors halt immediately and scream as they envision their greatest terror - one of them drops over and in a few moments obliterates itself in a torrent of fire and chaos while the other two are momentarily stunned at the horrendous vision. The fourth Balor growls as it sees through the phantasm then charges at the succubus only to have another spell rip its soul and body from the world and imprison it in one of the ornamental, low-quality gems that can always be found in the succubus enclave. Normally, such a spell would require a receptacle of far greater quality but Mary is not limited by such barriers to her magic.

Sevixal
The guardian of the Mountains of Madness unleashes his fury upon the fiends the chaos-storm called forth. His arctic frost seems to have less effect than expected upon the Balors, their innate resistance to magic defeating Sevixal's spell as the greater demon, in his haste, does not put enough effort into it. Sevixal's melee skills are another matter; with a few quick attacks he brings one of the Balors to his knees. Perhaps frightened at the attack, the Balors all try to impose their will upon the greater demon, a supernatural domination attempt intended to stop him cold. Unfortunately for them, their attempts fail to pierce their target's magic resistance as well.

Denthanus
Increasing his size and stature to gargantual levels, the greater demon is rather intimidating; the Balors are shaken at his appearance. Thus, they attempt to call reinforcements; four mariliths appear out of thin air proving that summoning still works in Beradax's domain. Of course, the Mariliths are also all shaken at being ordered to attack a behemoth of Denthanus' size and obvious power; their attacks, a multitude though they may be, are all ineffectual.

One cut, that is all that they were able to inflict on him. One small wound, already closing. But then again, what had he expected of them? They may be amongst the top of the rabble, but they are trash nonetheless.

Laughing uproariously, Zarkin becomes a storm of lethal apendages as he starts ripping apart one of the balors, only throwing a few attacks at the other three when they appear to slack in their concentration for a moment, aiming to throw them off balance.

She was satisfied with the result, it was not perfect but she could not expect it to be.

Looking at the staggered ones she considered whether to maintain the power-level as it was or to reduce it to save resources there might be other treats today that she might have to deal with, she also considered leaving but that would rob her of the resources available here.

After brief consideration she choose to simple finish it, Balor's were rare so finishing it quickly and storing them for later would suffice.

Denthanus gazed at the Marliths passively as a rift opened behind him, and his Nalfeshnees lumbered out. "Our sisters betray us. Keep that one busy for me, and if any of the Balors live, I shall give it to you as a plaything." So speaking, Denthanus grinned at the demons arrayed before him. "You could start running. I don't know if I'm fast enough to follow you."

Denthanus;
His summoned Nalfeshnees engage the Balors' mariliths but faced with overwhelming force, they won't last long. Meanwhile, the Balors turn to him and point, focusing the weight of their fury at him, attempting to crush him under it and implode his physical form into nothingness...

Sevixal;
The Balors laugh at the greater demon's blunder as Sevixal's fire washes over them to no effect. Then, they invoke their own fire, a torrent that coats everything nearby...

Ka'Rishta;
The marilith champion's attacks easily overwhelm the unprepared Balors; a third explodes in a torrent of flame while the last is grabbed and held fast by her tail, its sword and whip useless.

Mary;
This time, Mary's magic doesn't have the effect she was expecting. Due to the chaos of the Abyss thinly disguised as sheer luck, the remaining Balors manage to shrug off or resist her magic. Deciding that owning a succubus of her good looks -and her apparent lack of intelligence in trying to fight four of their kind at once- they target her with their own mind-magics in an attempt to dominate her; she can feel their will slowly pushing through her defenses.

Grashank;
One of the Balors turns to stone and the one already wounded bursts in a torrent of fire. The others follow their Mariliths in attacking him and four more hits land, one from a Balor hitting but failing to sever his neck.

Nijith;
A Balor falls from his blows, unconscious. The other active Balor concentrates on imploding him... and fails dismally. The other two are still held immobile and helpless...

Zarkin;
The first Balor falls under Zarkin's onslaught, exploding with terrible violence... that hardly harms anyone. Two of the other demons of rage are stunned and the last takes a step back, the ferocious attack giving him pause. Then he strikes with blade and whip but all his attacks fail dismally.

Yhak'Tisaph'assat
The fireball explodes harmlessly against the Balors. The summoned Bebilith has little chance to do anythign as it manifests - the Balors turn at it and immediately it falls under their combined efforts at domination.

Mary

She was distracted as her magic failed, and further annoyed at the presumption of controlling her - the anger left her mind open and nearly cost her baring her natural demonic resilience to magic.

Time to finish this she decided.

Firstly standing as standing as tall as possible she snapped out a spell of protection to assist her against there control, then while still being seeming tiny next to the two creatures before her she uttered in a low voice but one that carried, "your pathetic attempt to control me have failed slaves", she presented them with a direct challenge to their ego and standing in the demonic hierarchy.

Their hatred nearly assured she proceeded with her spells, desiring nothing less then to unleash the minions into the the heavens themselves where they could preform the more useful function of annoying someone else.

There have been many times, when she is playing the dominant role, that Ka'Rishta has trapped someone in her coils, pressed to the point of being unable to move but just on the edge of actually feeling pain. Right now however, the balor trapped is feeling pain, not enough to cause asphyxiation but enough that he feels bones and ribs beginning to crack under the pressure. Ka'Rishta considers briefly teleporting with her prize to see Mary, who can sometimes be better at getting answers out of someone's mind than she is, but she decides to try her own way first, the balors do tend to respond to it.
Her pressure continues to ratchet up just a bit.
What do you know about the nature of that disturbance?
And why did you attack me as a result of it?
In order to make her point just a bit more appearant, she lays the edge of her best blade at his throat.

They fall as easily as he remembers. Pathetic really, that their kind is known to mortals as the strongest. Then again, those stronger rarely see the need to show themselves on the material plane and when they do, no one is left to give account of their appearance. So in a way, the fact that they are known at all is a tribute to their weakness.

Denthanus merely glared at the Balors as he felt the collective pressure of their wills trying to crush him. Him, Denthanus, the Gatekeeper, the Beast of Paranoia. They thought they could crush him? His eyes never leaving the traitorous dogs, Denthanus lifted his hammer, and simply let if fall upon the nearest Marilith.

And now, Denthanus begins his melee work.

Righteous Might makes my Earth Breaker do 6d6 damage, plus 40 from Strength boni and Enhancement bonus.

He Power Attacks, adding another 24 points of damage, for 6d6+64 damage. Furious Focus negates the penalty for the first attack of the round, which is fine, because Denthanus is only attacking once.

Why? Because of Greater Vital Strike, which multiplies the damage dealt by 4. Guarantees 280 points of damage. Oh, and if the Marilith dies, I get a free Demoralization attempt against everything in 30 ft thanks to Dreadful Carnage, and 5 temporary hit points from Cruel weapon enhancement. If by some miracle it doesn't die and I hit it, it's still sickened from Cruel.

Denthanus
The giant hammer falls and hits the marilith squarely in the middle. For a moment, it seems as if the demon will keep fighting but then she falls down, the blow having luckily snapped her spine; she immediately vanishes into thin air, the magic holding her together dispersed.
The Balors and Mariliths seem to be listening to something for a few moments - then vanish as well, teleporting away from the fight and to a location unknown. If Denthanus didn't know better -and he doesn't- he could swear they were listening to some telepathic message before disappearing...

Sevixal
The blasts of cold followed by his furious attack severely wound one Balor and damage the other. Instead of striking back though, the two of them pause for a moment, then flee via their innate teleportation. Sevixal considers the turn of events for a moment; is it possible the Balors were taking orders from someone else?

Zarkin
Another Balor falls before Zarkin, exploding into fire and ruin. The other two, thoroughly demoralized and stunned, are in no position to act. Then, to Zarkin's surprise, black smoke and shadow surrounds them forming into an arcane symbol. And then the two Balors vanish screaming into darkness...

Mary
Fighting Balors is dangerous, if mildly so. Even someone of her power might fail if unlucky - thus the succubus witch seeks to end the fight. And what better way than banishing the two demons to Valhala, the little-known afterlife of a certain pantheon where they could make trouble... and be messily slain for it before they could escape? Never knowing the fate that awaits them and not getting a chance to act against the infuriating succubus, the Balors are cast away...

Grashank
The Balor he attempts to petrify now manages to resist the curse but Grashank's attacks on the one he wounded first prove enough to slay. The nearby marilith, taking the blast of a Balor's death in the face, followed by a couple of powerful blows while distracted is simply reduced to so much meat.
The remaining demons growl angrily but a moment later they halt their attempted attack, seem to be listening to something for a few moments, then vanish...

Yhak'Tisaph'assat
The demonic necromancer wishes the opposing demons dead. Normally, that would be beyond the safe uses of even such a powerful spell but this is the Abyss; there are enough locations where even Balors would find a quick and messy death; the magic simply snatches two of the Balors plus their dominated bebilith and casts them into the swirling vortex of chaos where the sublayers of Beradax's domain meet and above which Beradax's own castle hangs. Yhak'Tisaph'assat knows not what happens to those that fall within but he does know that those fiends cast there have never returned. Perhaps someone more powerful than a Balor -such as himself- could conceivably survive... but no greater demon of any intelligence would take such a risk - and those without intelligence are slain long before they become greater demons.
The remaining two Balors, having resisted the necromancer's attempt to outright slay them, decide on the better part of valor after only a moment's thought... and teleport away into safety.

Nijith
Another torrent of blows stun and finally incapacitate the other active Balor. But then, a black mist begins to swirl around all of them. One of the paralyzed Balors breaks through the holding spell with a frantic effort and vanishes via teleportation. The other does not and it, along with the two unconscious ones, is dragged screaming into the darkness, vanishing without trace.

Ka'Rishta
The captive Balor in her coils shakes - it takes the great marilith a moment to realize he's attempting to laugh. Fool! it says in a grating voice. Even as you win, your master shall fall. And after she does, all in this useless layer will be put to the blade, their blood and souls food for the G...
The Balor suddenly stops speaking and gasps as something unseen but incredibly strong crushes his physical body into nothingness. Smoke and shadows form an arcane sigil for a moment before splitting into thirteen bolts of barely perceptible power and hurling themselves towards twelve different destinations. The last portion of the smoke and shadow simply dissipates.

Everyone
With your immediate enemies slain or gone, the danger subsides. Other demons in your immediate surroundings seem to be recovering from the effects of whatever upheaval struck, their temporary insanity fading back into their usual personalities. Whatever else might have happened, you get the feeling the effects of this upheaval were not limited to your location. And sure enough, you immediately have a feeling of intense scrutiny as if a thousand eyes are upon you, immediately followed by an almost overwhelming magical pull. You are not sure if you could have resisted that pull had you tried - but you know not even to attempt to do so. For that is the call of Beradax, the lady of this layer of the Abyss.

The magical translocation brings you forth at the lip of the vast chasm above which Beradax's own stronghold floats. It is a massive pit so wide that the far shore is barely visible in your enhanced eyesight and so deep that the bottom is beyond sight or transportation magic as far as you know.
You are standing upon one of the many mountain-sized jagged peaks of obsidian that ring the vast pit, the only stable ground to be found. For as the different aspects of the plane collide violently, they devolve into the same torrents of raw chaos that divide them further out. Torrents that like a vast river the size of a small ocean falls eternally down the chasm and into the void beyond.
You stand upon one of the sixty-six larger peaks to which the Floating Citadel is anchored; a massive chain binding this peak, like its sixty-five sisters, to the castle floating above the middle of the great chasm. Each one of the metal rings of this single chain is sixty feet wide and six feet thick, the titanic chain anchored into a spike that goes miles into the obsidian rock on the ground on one side, and up to a similar spike at the Citadel's foundations at the other. But even so, the chains are dwarfed into insignificance for the Floating Citadel is the size of a small mountain range; a rough disc of gleaming black obsidian six leagues wide and six miles thick forms its foundation, with a multitude of towers and complexes built upon them, the larger towers another six miles tall each.

Such is the majesty of the spectacle that for a moment you fail to notice you are not alone. But soon enough, you realize there are seven others along with you; powerful demons in the service of Beradax all that you have at least heard of in the past.
It would seem that the demon lady's call has brought all of you here at the edge of the Great Chasm for some reason - but has not carried you all the way to the Floating Citadel. And this poses a minor problem; the chaos-storm the citadel floats over would hurl any flier into the pit and the castle's defenses prevent teleportation...

Ka'Rishta regards the other demons carefully, she knows Mary the most due to their recent association. She decides to speak up first.

There was a great disturbance in my location just now, but from the violence of it, you likely felt it as well. And then my balor gaurds turned on me...it was foolish of them for I bested all but one of them.
And that one, which I had captured, had a warning for me before it vanished. It warned that someone was guiding the whole incident, one that intends to destroy Beradax and her plane. Whatever its name is, it begins with a G. And then that force destroyed it before it could speak more. Now we find ourselves here, but unable to make it to our queens fortress. Everyone, for a moment, spots a jet-black demon; a Vrolikai. He brandishes four longswords, sparking with power that would drive any fiend away, with glowing white eyes, a pair of wings, and four lanky, yet muscled arms. He has an aura of unmistakable evil, and just as you catch sight of him, he turns to the Marilith in the group, and he gives a slight smile.
"Ka'Rishta. Never thought I'd see you again."

Then he disappears, though everyone still feels his presence in the same place, and he gives a slight laugh as he hears the Marilith's explanation and tale of the fight.

"All but one, Oh Great General? My escort turned on me, and I felled them all. Flicked a finger, and ~zing, they just stood still! Didn't even touch me."

His voice drips with a mocking tone, as he turns towards the chains.

"Any who wish to be true chaos, flying free... would take care to not do so here. Any who stay on anchored ground can live..."

He stares at the marvel before him for a few moments, and shakes his head.

What riddle does Beradax have for me today to solve? The upheaval was indeed quite strong...

KA'RISHTA

Ka’Rishta appears as an absolutely gorgeous human female (albeit one with 6 arms), right down to just below her waist…where her snake like tail joins her body. Even with that, she manages an irresistible exotic allure, even causing fantasies of what it might be like to be wrapped up in her tail (hopefully without the crushing). The fact that each one of her hands is carrying an ornate and bejeweled long sword just adds to her “dangerous sexy” look, and despite the flashy appearance of all of those blades, assuming them to be just works of art would be fatal mistake. Ka’Rishta is more than willing to play up this look, using it as just another weapon in her arsenal.

As a matter of fact, I could have easily destroyed him. However in the bigger picture, questioning him could have, and did, reveal useful information, instead of just more carnage. At least we can eliminate any opponents who dont have a name of G

Mary

As the Balors were cast into a plane where they could annoy someone else Mary considered the ramifications of the betrayal for a moment, either Beradax had betrayed her or had been betrayed, or was engaging in some whimsy.
Ruling out the final option as uncontrollable, and the first option due to the level of force not being sufficient that left the the betrayal being against Beradax, which one had to assume implied an roughly equivalent force to an abyssal lord was acting against her. Great.

Feeling the call she contemplated fighting against it but choose not to, such defiance would likely fail and could prove disastrous either way.

Appearing with the others was a young woman, with perfect skin and dark hair she wore robes with intricate runes engraved on them and held no obvious weapon. For those in the know this was Beradax's personal artificer a quite succubus that held her own company more often then not.

Now this was a more suitable ambush party, she noted the others and while she held her own company often she was aware of the general major players.
Savixal a warden in the mountains she had little cause to deal with, Nijith an assassin, Zarkin an enforcer, Ka'Rishta a general and warrior and the one she had encountered most frequently, Grashank another commander, Yhak'Tisaph'assat a necromancer, and finally Denthanus the doorman.

If a fight occurred here it would be better to be elsewhere, and and if this was an ambush leaving immediately would also be preferred. This was not a battle she could be confident of winning even where she prepared.

Standard teleportation would be tricky here, but they had been invited and that allowed for a breach in protocol. While she would prefer not to show her hand she felt that some small measure of power and assistance could be worthwhile in forming allies.

She said not a word as the others taunted each other and discussed, instead focusing on the task at hand.

A gate erupted in front of her leading to a stable area within the Floating Citadel used for guest arrivals, she would hold it open if others choose to follow as she stepped through.

I am assuming that if wish would work then gate being at the same level and more focused would work also. Assuming this counts as crossing between planes.
If it is not planer travel she will use a wish to generate a gate like affect for the same is possible.

waiting room, Floating Citadel

The gateway Mary opens leads to a vast open chamber with unadorned walls of black obsidian polished to mirror-like gleam; this is the waiting room for anyone wishing an audience with Beradax, and the demon lady has no use for ornaments. You wonder for a moment if the walls, ceiling and floor - some six hundred feet apart - serve a more utilitarian purpose; someone with Beradax's countless eyes might find it easy to track the equally countless reflections upon reflections upon them and thus watch everyone in the entire tower even around doors and in other floors.

Curiously, the chamber is mostly empty. One would expect that after such an upheaval a multitude of demonic servants would be crawling all over the place but you can only see two individuals present other than yourselves. Both of them are apparently female and they seem too busy arguing with each other to notice you;
"I'll say it one last time, in small words so even you can understand it; My. Mistress. Is. Not. Here. She is currently missing, along with her entire court, so obviously you cannot meet with her. So pack up your horribly dressed, fashion-murdering self and leave."
That unearthly musical female voice is somehow familiar to you; you are sure you've heard it before but you're also certain it had never been so angry. Still, you cannot yet see the speaker; she's hidden behind the other person in the room, a grey-robed and hooded figure about ten feet tall and so indistinct in its baggy grey robe that you have to hear the second voice to realize she's also female;
"Now now, dear. There is no reason to overtly stress yourself beyond what the pressure of current events has already imposed upon you. Meeting with your mistress was a matter of courtesy - it was not as if she would personally deal with the issue I would have brought before her. And those who would have dealt with my little lost-and-found case are still present in this layer... and have presently arrived. Besides, you already tried to get rid of me by fire and death and banishment. It did not work; does that not, according to your beliefs, speak of my authority and right to be here?"
The motherly but subtly powerful voice that seems to press against the walls even at barely above a whisper is amazingly condescending to whom you suspect the younger, angrier voice belongs to. It is obviously intentionally so and from the other speaker's furious silence, she knows it too. Then the tall, robed figure steps aside and you can see the other woman;

A seemingly delicate beauty of such grace that one hardly notices her nine-foot frame, with shoulder-length raven hair messily but artfully arranged to indicate youth and inexperience, Alusiel is far from what she appears to be. Tiny horns and a thin flexible tail her only fiendish features, Beradax's scribe and seneschal is all pale skin, fishnets, high heels and a very low cut dress that displays an impressive bust.
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQCqkzXjtlhV6J98IoP0PVWvdmvlvqld 7WSZd-SuNRQ4lrFnzWg
Of course, anyone who has risen to such a position in Beradax's domain could never have been the shallow, annoyingly cute lady she shows to most of the world. But almost everyone below Beradax's inner circle seems to believe the facade. But as members of that circle you know Alusiel to be as deadly as she is cute, those above her in the court having inexplicably vanished - including the succubus oracle that once held her position.

Fury marring her pretty face, Alusiel turns to you, raising one eyebrow in question. She doesn't speak - perhaps the robed visitor has annoyed her enough that if she speaks right now it will only be a prelude to a murder attempt.

The extent of her fury is evident by an action the usually quiet and secretive demoness would never have contemplated under other circumstances, as she lashes out in frustration with her magic. How much more than just a pretty face she might be is evident when a barely visible shimmering bubble surrounds Sevixal, only apparent by the magical luminescence of the fortress not extending within its borders. But however ephemeral that barrier appears to be, Sevixal immediately feels all his innate powers, his magic and the power of his items severed from him by that same invisible block.

Serves you right.
She says in typically vindictive demonic fashion. Then she takes a few breaths that do interesting things to her... figure and calms down.
Problems, plural. Which aren't getting any better with an as of yet nameless guest that refuses to speak to me in detail while refusing to leave.

Indeed. Chimes in the robed, possibly female individual. Her face in shadow, the only mark of identification you can see on her is the talisman hanging from her neck. The width of a babau's palm, it is made of a silvery metal you suspect might be platinum. A simple disc, with three words in some obscure mortal script enfolding an eye that sits atop a pyramid. The words read; דעת בינה חכמה

I am fairly confident that one of your problems was or will soon be my problem as well. It is towards its resolution that I awaited here for your arrival despite... strenuous objections.

Ret-con
Seeing the gate open, and having no better way to transport herself, KaRishta slithers through the opening with a word of thanks for the succubus. It wouldnt do to be summoned and then not have a way to arrive.

Present
The marilith listens to the exchange with interest, a commander's most valuable ally is knowing the layout of the opposing forces in a battle. And the most important piece of information has just been dropped, Beradax and her entire court was gone...no doubt victims of the upheaval. And Alusiel was probably being driven crazy by the demands for information...one of the most persistent being this other woman. Perhaps this woman's case was in some way related, but she wasnt about to bypass Alusiel's authority. Sevixal's state proved a mute testimony to those who did so.

Alusiel, I have come in response to a summoning, perhaps your own. We experienced the same upheaval in the plane, an upheaval that caused our balor guards to turn on us. From my brief questioning of one of them, before he met his ultimate demise, I learned that some greater power opposes us and Beradax, and that opponent has a name that begins with G. What would you have us do to as the next course in this war?

Belial_the_Leveler
2013-02-12, 08:49 AM
Alusiel frowns prettily at the marilith general. I did not summon you. she says, her slight shift of posture indicating ebbing fury and rising confusion. I came to the keep as fast as I could to find it empty. I immediately took up the network of remote communication with the layer's important points - which means I'm telepathically bombarded by messages from several hundred idiots at once - and have been trying to limit the problems ever since.

Poor baby, lost her mother. The robed figure interjects, evidently amused. Whatever will she do now?

The pretty demoness ignores the snide commentary with an effort of will and continues;
The spawning pits are being overrun by nalfeshnees that, free of reprisal, are devouring as many souls as they can. The prison complex has lost control of the lower dungeons. The obyrinth nests deep in the Frozen Depths are clashing with the tanar'ri in the region and might soon revolt. And those are just the more immediate problems. She glares murderously at the robed figure but speaks to you. So you understand why any unnamed outsider's problems can't be my business now. With the number of different factions this layer has, any major external enemy could easily have us kill each other and reap the spoils. And I refuse to be stupid enough to allow it!

Sevixal is now sitting down, and tapping boredly on the floor "Just to point out, they were attacked by their death squads, I had 4 balors ripped from my memory into reality as whatever happened happened." When the Hooded figure speaks so rudely to Alusiel "So Alusiel, I get trapped in an Anti-Magic... Thing... And she get bad looks for much more then I did? Now that's very cold for a warm place like the Abyss." Then he playfully crosses his arms and hugs his shoulders, pretending to be cold.

From some way behind, heaving, thundering steps can be heard ... as well as cursing, lots of cursing.
As is so often the case, the summoning magic had had some ... problems with Zarkin's internalized ability to fly. Both being magic in nature and due to his size, it had left him to arrive less than gracefully, by materializing in mid-flight about three feet from the side of the pillar. Sadly, to hold the castle, said pillar is made of stuff much tougher than Zarkin and so their meeting was somewhat uncomfortable for the latter.
Holding onto the side, he had quickly climbed to the top, only to see some of the others in Beradex' employ create a gate and start to step through. Focussing for a moment, he rebuilds his usual defenses that the upheaval had stripped from him and moves after the others.
He arrives late, having to squeeze through the gate that was made for much smaller creatures in mind and rubs hsi face cursing under his breath as he moves to stand behind the others. Of course, for someone who is this large "Under your breath" still leaves you very much noticeable.

I hate how there is no more doubling of size in grid-size.
Huge would be 20x20 and gargantuan 40x40. That would leave him at a height of 75ft or so. I like how in that case most everyone in here would be the size of a cat to him or less.

Oh yes, you are so very powerful. That's why you're still behind that barrier. The beautiful demoness rolls her eyes even as she puts hands on hips and smirks suggestively. You get the feeling the primary reason Alusiel is so furious with the robed guest is that the latter is stealing her "condescending princess" personna - rumor has it she usually is far more agreeable to other important demons. Very, very agreeable.

The robed figure turns to the marilith and nods almost imperceptively. Sometimes, one's subjects are of sufficiently low intellect to get themselves into great trouble while still being useful or amusing enough to keep. The robed figure sighs. This is becoming a trend with this particular subject - being the victim of banishment for the second time this year. More than one clue led me to this layer of the Abyss in my quest for retrieval. The robed figure's darkness-concealed face seems to measure you with its hidden gaze.
Will you retrieve my subject for me? Outsiders with far more power than sense are already running around and causing trouble - no reason to add more. And if my subject is returned largely intact - emphasis on largely - there will be significant compensation for your troubles.

Not knowing where Beradex is and honestly not caring all that much, Zarkin speaks up adressing the tiny hooded thing. Once again it sounds like quarry has learned to speak, only wetter as it appears that his meeting with the pillar caused Zarkin's gums to bleed. Now the floor in front of him is taking on a splotched red appearance.

"How much is 'largely' and as we are on that topic how big is that 'problem' of yours. I don't particularly care to fight small things even if they are strong. Though it depends on what compenastion is within reach."

Belial_the_Leveler
2013-02-12, 11:02 AM
"Largely", as in "alive, conscious and without permanent harm done". We wouldn't want this challenge to be too easy now, would we? The robed figure gives Zarkin a knowing glance - though how it does so from beneath that hood is anyone's guess. Should you succeed within the above limitations, the reward will be a small but permanent increase of your personal power for each one of you. Plus one favor from me me to your group as a whole, no more than equal in benefit to the resources you will put in resolving my own problem.

You can, of course, deal with my problem not keeping to those limitations. You will still end up with an increase in your personal power - but no favor from me. The faceless gaze becomes slightly amused. As for the difficulty of retrieving my subject? Do try to use tactics. I'd hate to see my investment in you lost without return.

No! interrupts the castle's seneschal, almost angrily again, her tail lashing left and right. The greatest threat to this layer is in the influx of souls from the mortal realms. There is an entire army of Nalfeshnees overwhelming the spawning pits right now. If they reach the pits, they could pick the strongest souls for themselves.

Alusiel stares at you challegingly. Beradax ensures the strongest souls get spawned into full demons much faster than the weakest could spawn into manes and then ascend. But if the Pits are left uncontrolled and the stronger souls devoured, the army this layer could field would be weakened. Not immediately but within the year - and the stolen souls won't only be devoured. What if many of those Nalfeshnees are controlled by this hidden enemy and take the souls to his army instead?
The demoness sighs, her anger ebbing away, realizing she can't be angry at you and expect to convince you - perhaps that is why the robed visitor infuriated her?
Less than a dozen demons devouring powerful souls is far, far better than thousands of demons simply stealing them. Here's an immediate and obvious reward; if you break this Nalfeshnee force and restore control of the Pits, you could devour however many powerful souls you wanted. That would give you an immediate increase in power - and the souls you devour won't really be missed.

It is how Beradax ensured the loyalty of her inner circle anyway.

However, he then hears what Alusiel has to say, and ponders it for a minute.

"Hrm... you are right. That would indeed be the smarter thing to do..."

He turns to the robed woman again, and gives an apologizing shrug.

The entrapment is temporary. He is powerful enough to overcome it, given a minute or two at most. And it will fade of its own given time. I... The demoness scowls at nobody in particular. This new awareness of the layer's events is proving hard to cope with.
It is as much of an apology one could expect from any demon. Especially in such a dangerous situation. Maybe Alusiel is trying to be more diplomatic. or perhaps the situation is dangerous enough to threaten her personally and she's swallowing her pride to find allies. Only time will tell.

For now, both the demoness and the robed figure are waiting to hear the other powerful demons present. It is never a good idea to take decisions without accounting for powerful individuals (especially demons). Plus, it is common courtesy, usually meant to lull enemies and allies alike into complacency so you can backstab them later. All in all, a sound tactic.

Mary

Stepping out of the gate, she could have sighed demons always yapping. She however did offer the barest nod to the Marilith - a single word of thank - the civilized thing.

She observed the discussion between her cohorts the senechal and the stranger.

She removed the trapped soul of the Balor from a pocket, "The soul of one of the traitor Balor, I assume you can question it" her voice bored as she flicked the gem to the Alusiel.

"As for the rest I have no issue with assisting control of the pits, nor to I have issue bargaining a life for power. The question is why is this either or, retrieving a being sounds almost trivial - though I suspect there is more to it - similarly putting down army sounds time consuming but ultimately not an issue", she crossed her arms in front of her.

"I would hear who this being is, I would hear the form the power will take and how it will be delivered. I would hear who you are" she looked at the hooded figure, "and then I may decide to help you".

Returning her gaze to Alusiel, "the pick of 10 percent of the daily take of the souls of the pits divided amongst all those that assist, from now until Beradax returns" she would not challenge a demon lord's right to set and alter rules.

She had no intention of choosing one path to power over another when both might be available, and no intention of signing up for anything without some agreement clear payment in advance.

"Looking between the two, assuming my terms are unreasonable I will excuse myself and return to work", she had some respect for Alusiel and a figure potent enough to annoy her was to be respected also, but she would prefer to set unreasonable prices and then politely get back to work.

Finally. Someone reasonable - or an acceptable fascimile thereof.
The words of the hooded figure are no longer amused, though you cannot say whether it responds to Mary or Grashank. And then, the figure lowers its hood to reveal the face of a woman.

Despite seeing that face, you cannot tell what its features are; hair length or style or color, skin type, nose shape, lip size, its defining features or current expression; you see them but you do not know what they are and if you later tried to recall them you'd come up with a blank. Except for the eyes; lidless as they are merciless and eternal - glowing like stars. That image you remember as you fall further and further in the depths of memory, reliving every single moment you have ever experienced, seeing them under the light of those twin stars and looking at them with new understanding. But the weight of such memories - millennia upon countless millennia experienced again in a single instant - is too much. As that weight attempts to crush you, you hear the figure's voice. A voice, you realize, you now listen to for the first time.
MEMORY. CONTEMPLATION. COMPREHENSION.
I AM BINAH. NAME ME AT YOUR PERIL.
As the fleeting instant of crushing violence in the depths of your minds leaves behind it jumbled thoughts, you barely see the figure restoring its deep hood.
A real party-ender, is it not, my middle name? It is why I employ concealment in my travels, and no more than a tiny whisper in conversations.

Having revealed her name and form -in part- the hooded visitor waits to see if you will survive the experience and recover before continuing the conversation.

His forelegs lifted off the ground, smashing into the tile of his mistress's floor. His bat-like wings stretched to their full capacity, and neon green venom dripped from his fangs. Balefire rushed down his spine as his anger focused in on this intruder. Then, the Gatekeeper spoke.

"I will not speak your name. I do not think it wise. But as Mistress Beradax's Gatekeeper, I am loath to allow such a power to remain in her realm in her absence. So I will aid you. And after our task is complete, you will leave. And then, I will deal with the Spawning Pits."

You asked for my name. You asked for my face. Am I responsible for you not liking the answer? Amusement flows through the guest's non-voice as she communicates. Besides. You do possess enough power to survive -evidently- and there are those among you with abilities that can remove the temporary side-effects. What is not a temporary side-effect is comprehension; how many beings have the chance to review and contemplate the entirety of their existence? You think the experience has gained you nothing? Once the momentary distraction of pain is out of the way, you should notice that your personal power has increased in a small but significant non-physical way or that you have gained new insights that can lead to more esoteric gains.
The explanation is interrupted by Alusiel vomiting messily upon the obsidian floor but other than that displaying no symptoms of insanity. The figure pauses for a moment then continues.
But do not think me as monodimensional in my reasons. Beyond answering your question and also giving you a part of your reward in advance, I also tested your power to confirm that you are capable enough to survive the mission. Then there was the confirmation of an earlier guess on your part - you indeed cannot wrest your reward from me early - as well as instructing you on the nature of consequences; one can choose to do anything -being discourteous to those more powerful included- but each action does have results those who act might not like... or survive. And, of course, there is the mild amusement of seeing a petulant, self-centered child vomiting upon the floor after reliving each and every mistake on her course to her current predicament.
The figure snorts.
Last but not least, showing you how my mission does tie to your own problems, albeit indirectly. My gift of power in the form of knowledge will help you in your own endeavors - even a tiny measure of understanding or forewarning can make the difference between death and victory.
And consider my subject; should they share even a small portion of my... presence, they might cause havoc wherever they go or make existing upheavals worse. It is not really imperative for my purposes that you help me immediately, no, but it might be for yours.

@DM: I think it's well within the rules of Wish to Remove this stupid effect from everyone, Right? If so:

The effects of the Insanity vanish from everyone, the chaos of the fight dispersing. Hopefully anyway - you are demons after all and you might choose to keep attacking just for the fun of it. Or not.

I believe we're done here. Alusiel says sourly. The Nalfeshnee horde won't be breaching the defenses of the spawning pits till early tomorrow if their advance continues at that pace. And you will need to prepare well before you take them on if you are to succeed.
Then she scowls at the robed figure.
And even if you choose another mission, I bet you'd need to be equally rested and sheathed in protections. I suggest you use the Citadel's guest chambers to rest rather than your usual arrangements; you don't want to be attacked by randomly rampaging bands of demented lesser demons. In the interest of... quick resolution of our problems, I can offer magical healing from the recent... unpleasantness.
She scowls again at the mysterious visitor.
Maybe after some hours of rest you'll rethink your priorities.

There is no counter-argument from the robed and hooded stranger. A relief that, to at least some of you.

You are soo lucky Wish can undo the Insanity itself rather than having to affect individual victims. If nothing else, you won't have to contend with insane people cloaked in antimagic that prevents healing, or invisible, or incorporeal.

A demon lady or lord can alter a layer's climate and apparent laws Alusiel says as she casts. It is not as if such things as laws actually exist beyond their being the whims of those who exert control over the Abyss.
A wave of powerful magic washes over you, removing any warping of your body that would make it weaker.
But now that Beradax is gone, nobody can actually impose their will upon this layer.
A second wave of magic flows through you, restoring any paralyzed or slowed reactions.
As Beradax's edicts are slowly undermined by external influence and internal rebellion, the layer will begin to change.
A third wave of magic clears traces of insanity that were addling your thoughts.
The first to go was the sky; we have chaos storms all over the place and there is a day-and-night cycle for the first time in living memory, as if we were some wretched prime material world.
The fourth wave of magic unravels any lingering effects upon your reason and intellect.
Soon, the smaller of the landmarks Beradax created through her will alone - like many of the portals or the secondary castles and keeps - might be warped or even melt away.
The fifth wave of magic heals your sense of self and force of personality.
And given enough time, the entire shape of the layer will change as Beradax's influence fades entirely.
The sixth wave of magic finally restores torn muscles and ligaments, your strength returning to its normal levels.
But we are not in that dire a situation yet. A demon lady's influence needs a long time to fade. Before it does, we must either learn what happened to Beradax and restore her, or find a way to shore up and stabilize the layer's form. Otherwise, any sufficiently powerful demon atrocity or Lord to exert influence could impose its own changes upon the layer; it is quite hard to fight an invading army after their master has covered the layer in chaos storms and annihilated our forces with random volcanic eruptions.

Alusiel is, quite obviously, trying to impress; in a mere dozen heartbeats she has restored fully everyone willing to accept her magic and without being visibly tired from casting that many mighty spells in such a short time.

Her explanation of the overall situation rings true -though you are certain there are secrets she's keeping to herself- and now she waits to see if you'll avail yourself of her hospitality and the Citadel's almost countless free rooms. Not that the rooms are hers of course -they belong to the absent Beradax- but she is, at least nominally, responsible for the Floating Citadel in the Demon Lady's absence.

The night (for some definitions of the word) passes uneventfully (from certain points of view). You were just coming out of your individual rests and arranging your preparations for a potential fight at the spawning pits only a few hours from then when the castle alarms ring.

You all feel the alarm in your souls - even those of you who are not in the castle proper. Moments later, you feel the same massive pull that had taken you to the castle's anchors only a day ago - only this time it deposits you directly at the Floating Citadel's atrium, the same place you met Alusiel and the being known as Binah.
Those of you with knowledge of the workings of the planes might have had the odd baseless suspicion about this Call but with this new situation, your suspicions solidify. You strongly suspect that Planar Lords are tied to their domains, being able to observe, traverse, alter and reform their layers to their wills - and that now you each possess a rather minor, infinitesimal portion of such a link. It is not something you can control as evidenced by your unexpected transpositions and you begin to wonder of Beradax arranged for such a link precisely for situations she was not available herself.

Your contemplation of your circumstances, however much it might have pleased Binah to know you are being contemplative as she suggested, is rudely interrupted when a very large, very fat, very smelly, very heavily armored Nalfeshnee clad in Abyss-forged interlocked and overlapping black plate barges into the chamber.
Where's that damn seneschal? he demands in an ugly basso voice accompanied by a considerable amount of acidic spit launched left and right by its porcine mouth. Running her own games? Running away in fear at this Heaven-cursed mess? Rutting like a rabbit with her latest lover? No matter; they all begin with an 'R'. Damned females.
He continues in an increasingly foul-mouthed, decreasingly comprehensible manner for a full half-minute before he remembers why he's come or that you are also present.
Anyway. Damned rogues broke through the shields five minutes ago. They'll be gorging themselves full of souls like Ahriman's pigs any moment now.
It takes you a moment to place this guy - he is one of the more competent and more swear-happy of Beradax's generals, a male Nalfeshnee so bloated in bile and souls that he's gained an immense girth. He has a reputation of being both misogynistic and very popular with the ladies, and in addition to being thus arbitrarily contrary, he's literally foul-mouthed; abyssal bile flows from his maw, making his bite both agonizing and devastating - or so rumors say.
He also happens to be the general currently assigned to the Spawning Pits - which means his little tirade was a warning that the insane (or traitorous) legion of Nalfeshnees attacking the place has finally breached the defenses... several hours ahead of schedule.

And neither Alusiel nor "Binah" are anywhere to be seen for the time being...

He laughs again, his casual insults delivered at the same time as the acknowledgement of the marilith's physical might... and a challenge to her to prove her assumed superior rank; apparently, he values results far more than military ranks or discipline.

As for the rest of your so-called thinking the renegades are weak? He snorts, bile from his maw dripping on the floor and sizzling against the obsidian stones. Too many oidepal relationships in your spawners' lines must be degrading your brains; Abyssal armies are vast. That's usually a good thing when two sides clash; cause enough chaos and everyone gets their share of fun and slaughter. But what if there's only one big army on account of yours being stark raving mad from some big upheaval?

She was tired but had eventually resolved her problems and fixed the negatives prior to researching spells for the coming day.
Still she had little experience in handling armies (barring simply ignoring them) or finding missing people (barring summoning).

The virtue/curse of being bound to the realm was intriguing but matters required her to speak at this point, "Ka'Rishta do you have any plan to deal with the army, barring a direct confrontation to little gain where even if you destroy and defeat them you are looking at opening the plane to others", the question was not pointed but genuinely curious about the Marilith's goals in this.

We attend to where the defenses were breached, hopefully there is only one hole. If so, we will be able to keep them from surrounding us. Yes yes, discuss this among yourselves. Make your plans with discipline and precision. The bloated Nalfeshnee snorts, obviously unimpressed. He doesn't answer to Kha'Rishta's slap and doesn't seem to care about it. But while you are behaving decidedly undemonlike, an army of thousands is shoving itself through the breach they opened in the Spawning Pits' defenses. I didn't exactly stay there to count but I am sure hundreds upon hundreds of enemies have already charged through.
He shrugs.
Since ye be making plans and all, you can probably count. Suppose it takes you ten minutes to implement your so-called brilliant plan. If in five minutes two thousand enemies get through, and a Nalfeshnee finds and eats souls it sees are better than most at a rate of five per minute, over fifty thousand of the better souls will be consumed by the time you arrive.
He now raises both grotesque eyebrows while he sneers.
Billions of souls arrive in the layer daily. But really powerful evil mortals that can fuel the birth of strong demons outright appear once per mortal nation per generation - if that. So, how many resources will this plan of yours cost us?

Gratefully accepting the beneficial spells from Yhak, Denthanus stepped through the gate, and began to grow to his true size by way of his Righteous Might. A roar echoed across the battlefield, his wings extending to their full span, as the towering benemoth gazed at the fresh meat.

Ooooh-hoooh. With those extra buffs from Yhak, Denthanus is going to be smashing a bunch of Nalfeshnees heads in.

Standard DC 37 save against Frightful Presence for anything within 60 ft. Denthanus naturally attempts to position himself to catch as many enemies with the ability as possible-though, if combat begins as soon as we exit the Gate, then he simply fires it off as he passes through.

Taking a look at Denthanus' currently active buffs.
Cat's Grace and Bull's Strength operational. Both give a +4 to Dex and Str, respectively. Eagle's Grace is overridden by my Headband.
Righteous Might boosts Denthanus+equippment to Gargantuan size. +4 Size Bonus to Str and Con, -2 to Dex, which is partially canceled out by Cat's Grace. Earth Breaker now does...6d6+44 on a hit.

The gate opens up to reveal a field out of nightmares; jagged peaks of obsidian jutting out hundreds of feet out of the black basaltic ground to form a forest of misshapen teeth as far as the eye can see. Volcanic pits of boiling magma and raw chaos glow red from among the jagged teeth, spitting forth indescribable foulness that rises to cover the skies with clouds of black ash. Red lightning flashes among them incessantly, the only illumination other than the pits themselves.

The abyssal landscape is interrupted by a gaping wound in the mountain range, a vast pit as wide as Beradax's floating castle. An angry red glow can be seen in its depths many miles below, flashing with torrents of unnatural lightning and frothing demon bile - much like magma but far more dangerous.
It is a Spawning Pit, the largest and vilest in the layer. From the sea of bile surface the souls of the damned, mortals that followed chaos and evil when alive. Those souls dissolve, their essence having a small chance to draw in the essence of the Abyss and take on a demonic form - the viler the soul, the better the chance. And when a demonic form is taken, the newly spawned demon has an equally small chance to survive long enough to get to the shore - the stronger the form, the more damage it can survive and the greater the chance for a newly formed demon to actually emerge. It is fairly common for a soul to be tormented for a long time in the Spawning Pit before finally succeeding in its metamorphosis. It is far more likely that the soul will simply dissolve due to weakness and eventually fuse with other souls before forming - only the most powerful souls actually manage to form demons on their own.

But that is what usually happens in the Spawning Pit. This time, the Pit's mouth is closed by a great shimmering barrier many miles wide forming a transparent low dome. Near the center of that dome you can see a drop of opaqueness, a single spot where tiny-seeming cracks form a patch of whiteness. And around that small-seeming breach there presses a swarm of black spots, writhing and floating like a small cloud against the burning sky.
Nalveshnees. Thousands - tens of thousands; a vast swarm tiny only thanks to the distance it is being observed from. And a small portion of that swarm, far less than a tenth or even a twentieth, appears to be on the inside of the barrier.
You can't be sure - you're still too far to see details - but it seems the renegades that have already swarmed through the breach are waiting for more of their number to pass before overwhelming the inner defenses, the tiny-seeming towers within the pit containing maybe a few hundred to a thousand defenders at most.

Some extremely powerful magic is blocking teleportation beyond the dome... which in retrospect makes sense; if there was no such barrier, the entire enemy army could have appeared inside instantly. Being demons, they had the exact same teleportation abilities after all.

Mary realizes she won't be able to tell much from so many miles away from the enemy, no matter how good her awareness. Her ability to see magic is another matter; the eldritch energies coming off the Spawning Pit - or maybe the dome and the other protections there - are so vast that they glow like the sun even from so far off.
She instantly turns away to avoid being overwhelmed. A split second later she realizes only one person in the entire layer could ever have crafted a ward of such power and complexity that an army of tens of thousands of demons would need days to make a relatively insignificant breach to merely its physical aspect.

Why must there be wards everywhere? That is the thing that Nijith is thinking, as he teleports towards the absolute back of the horde, and hopes that he can actually get there.

"What a relief."

He then sheathes himself in invisibility and quietly begins working his way through the ranks, attempting to slit the throats of four unlucky Nalfenshees.

Mary might be smart enough to know but I am assuming that you mean Beradax rather then Alusiel or Binah as the one being.

Curious she thought as she flew closer from a look - teleporting if possible - high above the crack and army to get a better look at the scene, focused more on how to repair the crack then on the army which would simple be a tiresome and futile waste of time to overcome.

Denthanus cracked his neck. A near infinite swarm of Nalfeshnees. A good couple of miles away. It would take a little bit to get there. Denthanus began running at top speed, hammer held at the ready. This was what he lived for. Unmatchable odds. More enemies than the eye could see. All for him to destroy, to consume, to break. The mad demons would fear the name of Denthanus for the rest of their short, miserable existance.

...I run at the back of the horde. First thing that comes in range gets a charge to the face.

Sevixal finds his way through the crack in the barrier fairly easily, slashing at the lesser demons within reach. Soon, he finds himself hanging just inside the dome, with far too many targets around him - there are literally thousands of them. If they somehow managed to sit on him all at once, he would soon get reduced to a greasy smear of bile and chaos. But other than that, the ugly, fat pig-demons don't pose any more threat to him than bugs would to a typical mortal.

Nijith sneaks into the rear of the fat demon swarm and strikes at four lesser fiends at once. Normally, they wouldn't all have come within reach given their huge bulk but given the congested conditions, that is hardly a problem. Two of the Nalfeshnees scream then dissolve into pools of bile, typical of demons slain in the Abyss. The other two also scream -how does a huge mound of demonic ugliness make such girlish screams anyway?- but don't die despite massive wounds.

Ka'Rishta politely moves through the gap in the magical dome shielding the place and takes up position in the middle. The nalfeshnees surrounding her immediately start a pandemonium of protests of how she's cutting the line and how they'll messily murder her for it. The six heavily wounded nalfeshnees the Marilith leaves behind her as she comes through are largely ignored and barely heard amid the chaos of protests.

Denthanus reaches the rear of the Nalfeshnee army trying to shove through the opening in the Dome. Sliding against the Dome's surface, he slams his huge weapon against the nearest lesser demon with tremendous force. The lesser demon in question literally explodes into a horrible mess of flesh, organs and other, less savory things but thankfully almost instantaneously melts down to bile like all demons slain into the Abyss.

Studying the opening in the massive defensive barrier, Mary realizes she could never have crafted anything like it. The sheer size of the thing would require her casting Walls of Force and spells of Permanency for decades to construct and even then, it would have nowhere near the resilience Beradax's barrier seems to possess. The problem is, she doesn't know how to repair it. Given several minutes, she could probably block off the gap with enough walls of force - but only IF she had memorized that many such spells. But even then, each individual wall would neither last forever nor withstand the attacks from the attacking demons for more than a couple of minutes. There was, of course, the possibility of covering the gap with sheets of destructive energy rather than solid blocks; successive walls of fire, perhaps, or Prismatic Walls. The prismatic walls specifically would resist dispelling and obliterate the vast majority of enemies trying to pass. Unless she was mistaken though, she might need as many as five of them to get the job done.
Last but not least, she could block the opening with a single spell by casting Repulsion on herself and then sitting below the opening from the Dome's interior. But that solution would only last a couple of minutes per casting and would not be foolproof. For one, some Nalfeshnees might pass through by sheer luck. For another, was Mary certain her magic could withstand the attempts of an entire army to dissolve it?

Then, contemplation becomes sort of a moot point. Apparently, the tens of thousands of Nalfeshnees waiting for their turn to go through are getting bored. And from those tens of thousands, some have both better teleportation ability and are quite perceptive. Several hundred of them appear out of thin air around each of you and begin performing a horribly disorganized, hideously ugly, hilariously crude swarming horde as they strike once in your general direction before being shoved aside by those behind them that also want to get you.
Crude or otherwise, the immense press of attacks means that at least a couple blows land on you due to sheer luck -or sheer lack of space since the lesser demons are covering everything but your own location in a horrible mess of twenty-foot, pig-shaped mounds of rage pressing against one another.
Rather annoyed at being left out of the fun, the many hundreds in the swarms surrounding you that can't join the fight engage you with magic; attempts to slow you, blast you with lightning (hilarious, if ineffective) or turn your mind into mush. Naturally, being greater demons means all those attempts simply slide off your resistance to magic like so many raindrops against a wall.

In the meantime, a portion of the Nalfeshnee army that has already crossed the gap dives towards the Spawning Pit below. Many are killed by flashes of magic - secondary defenses within the pit itself - and the outnumbered defenders engage the majority of the survivors. But the only law the Abyss ever adhered to -the Law of Ridiculously Large Numbers- means that at least a few of them pass through and into the churning maelstrom of chaos below.

With Kha'Rishta's barriers of whirling death in place and an invisible wall of force erected behind it and backed up by a called planetar that just erected an aura that repels demons, the breach seems to be holding.

As the defense is raised, suddenly the foul-mouthed Nalfeshnee general appears in your midst, having teleported despite the massive warding against teleportation. A simple pendant of black steel now glows white-hot against his girth but he seems not overly worried by its presence - it most probably is a talisman that allows him to bypass the wards.

You losers! What are ye still doing here scratching yer collective backsides? Some dumbass rebels reached the pits below and are eatin' souls fer all they be worth.
He grunts.
'course, eating more than they can break down and **** back out 'll make them burst ta bits or go stark raving mad. Till then though, their size and strength will match the magnitude of yer idiocy, which is me fancy way of sayin' they'll make mincemeat of the defenders.
He starts coughing then and you notice he isn't nearly as well as he was minutes ago back in Beradax's citadel; narrow but deep cuts can be seen all over his body, sluggishly oozing bile and chaos, probably made by the teeth and claws of the aforementioned rebels. Before you can interrupt with a question though, he starts speaking again.
Now come on. This amulet thingy only works fer me but I got some magic that could teleport several of you at once. Whoever wants to go, come quickly. I'm done for -me damn wounds don't heal right- but I can cast one damn spell 'fore I melt all over the place.

Mary

The gap was momentarily dealt with by others and frankly she had no interest in wasting her power on a pointless stopgap measure.

The general did however take her interest as she approached him, in life she would have thought of him as nothing more then a tool of his masters ... however a succubus was a creature of sin and her mind was not as devoid of sensations as it once was.
She could see why he may be popular with other females his confidence and easy style combined with a seemingly strange honour was almost intoxicating to her - even as she found herself repulsed by him - a smile crept onto her face as she used her quickened magic to heal the man.

No dammit, she cursed herself for a fool, it was a tactical decision nothing more she corrected herself.
She truly hated being a succubus at times, "I have healed you" she snarled "and you will serve me well or you will wish I had not".

She looked at the horde, "take us to the defenders".

Using a quickened wish to heal the general.

Belial_the_Leveler

Mary's mighty spell heals up the General's wounds - at least superficially. Every single bloody cut, burst blood vessel and rotted flesh closes over with healthy new flesh. But Mary is a learned enough spellcaster to know when her spells are failing -partially or otherwise- and can make an educated guess as to why; there is still raw chaos flowing through the General's form, what seems superficially stable flesh being now so prone to change that even change harmful to it such as physical wounds would come that much more easily, that much faster.
The reason for this is not entirely clear but Mary suspects intense exposure to the raw Chaos of the Abyss. Something sufficiently nasty must have happened below for the General to have been thus affected like someone who drew too much power from the Abyss to retain control or who was exposed to its raw essence.
"Heh. A good effort." he grunts, obviously still not used to his changed, possibly weakened body. "Should both you and I survive this conflict, I shall repay your trying to save my life."
And then he casts a spell, a simple teleportation but one with the help of the searing-hot talisman he bears to move you through the wards. Even as some of the team begins to fade, you see the talisman finally melting away, probably from too many uses in too little time; there won't be anyone else coming after you for some time...

Belial_the_Leveler
2013-03-21, 05:26 PM
You arrive through the teleportation to a scene of devastation. The fortresses in the depths of the pit, built on a small island in the mid of the vast pit of raw Abyssal Chaos, have been utterly destroyed; the defenders are all slain and already reduced to piles of bile and chaos seeping slowly back into the pit. The walls and battlements have been torn down with tremendous force and their pieces scattered, the other buildings burning merrily, stone and metal reduced to slag.

Walking through the ruins in five pairs of two are ten hideous, indescribable... things. They might have once been demons, even Nalfeshnee demons, but are now so bloated with new tumorous growth, random limbs, noses, mouths and eyes that you cannot tell. Raw Chaos seeps through rapidly growing, bursting and reforming pustules in every part of their skins that makes the General's unhealable wounds look like mere mild bruises in comparison.
Despite their obviously unstable forms, their apparent power is undeniable; one easily picks up a still-standing tower and throws it playfully at another; its playmate points at the tower and the tower is partially disintegrated, its remaining pieces raining down on the monstrosity with great force to no apparent effect. Both laugh, a cacophony coming from multiple mouths that shakes the very stones.

She nodded to the general, but was most interested in the affects of the raw chaos on him - her momentary weakness gone.

She could introduce law into the equation but did not have the spell prepared, still it was worth considering in theory at least.

She was horrified as the amulet melted - she would have wanted to study it and now it was gone likely beyond reasonable repair, she cursed silently in a dozen languages before calming down to reassess the scene before her.

Creatures this big were impressive for the size of them, but honestly size mattered little in the abyss.

"We might be able to use them against the horde" she stated loadly enough for the others to hear her.

If the mind was intact she could communicate with it, and possible fix this without involving herself directly.

Using her natural telepathy she reached out to the creature "Can you understand me", she began "I would like your assistance".

Ka'Rishta's lightning-fast attack against the demon meets unexpected resistance; her blades clang against nothing at all as if the enemy demon's will and innate magic are an invisible barrier she has to overcome. Eventually, that barrier collapses but it takes about three quarters of all her blows to do it and by then most of her ferocity is spent; the attacks she can spare on the demon itself have much less power and drive behind them, failing to score against its armor-hard hide.

While Nijith fades from view and Sevixal is boosting his own power, Mary and Yaph try magic - and both choose poorly. Mary's charm attempt simply splashes against the bloated, deformed demon's aura like so much water against a stone wall; apparently, like other greater demons, this one is so tied to its own incarnation of evil that its aura shoves aside any and all attempts at magical control or influence. Yaph's choice to replicate a spell used by angels against fiends fares equally poorly as all present are simply far too powerful to be affected, not to mention are standing on their own home plane.

And then the two monstrously bloated, deformed demons open a hundred mouths each and take a deep, rasping breath. For a moment you wonder what it is they're trying to inhale until you feel a crushing pressure against your forms and the very fluids of your bodies start oozing out of every pore, vaporizing in the process, to be swallowed by the enemy fiends.

Curious - immunity to simple emotional control had almost been a given and cost less other then time - but the defense was impressive.

Enough protection that it would be simpler to destroy a Balor and if it broke it could be reactivated at will in time for the next attack - as such at attack would either have to breach the shield and harm the creature beneath at once - or simply bypass the shield.

Sill the creature seemed nearly mindless - or possible apathetic to there existence, so she felt she could speak "It is a force affect, dispelling would not work - though you could try disintegration" she looked out at them "however even if you take down a shield with an attack, there is nothing preventing them reestablishing them for your follow up" flying to a safer distance "I would recommend bypassing it entirely or disabling them from acting if possible".

She unleashed a spell to simple remove the creature from existence, binding it to one of the low grade rocks she had collected.

I am assuming that even an attack doing enough damage to destroy a shield is useless as the follow up attack would have a new shield setup for it.

The wounds they deal to the thing are nigh-insignificant as its chaos-bloated flesh adapts and flows around every strike like living water.

And then Sevixal enters the fight, hammering down on the things with tremendous force. Only four blows to the three dozen already dealt by the other two demons - but all four go through the bloated enemy's form as if its armored skin has the consistency of wet parchment and leave behind gaping wounds that even the enemies' resistance to blows cannot endure; Sevixal has just dealt more damage to the bloated monstrosity than Ka'Rishta and Nijith combined.

Mary attempts to ensnare the demon with one of her usual traps. Against anyone less bloated with the power of the Abyss than these things, her attempt would have certainly worked - perhaps even against one of her fellow demonic generals. But this time, her spell bounces against the enemy's skin... and strikes back at her, her own magic ripping at her form and trying to force her into the worthless stone she holds!

Not bothering to change their previous tactic, the monstrosities again devour the vital fluids of their opponents, slowly but steadily wearing the group's resilience down. Perhaps this is the only credible threat they can offer - or maybe their minds are too far gone to come up with anything new.

Yhak coldly watches over the battle. He knows he doesn't have infinite spells and there are four more pairs of monstrous abominations to fight. His reality-warping could get the group out of a tight spot. Perhaps he will free Mary if her own rebounding spell ensnares her, or perhaps he'll attempt to heal the group from any incoming damage - certainly, direct attack does not seem to be worth his magic right now, especially if it would simply rebound upon him.

KA'RISHTA

Privately, Ka'Rishta is worried about this battle, they've barely made a scratch on one of the pair, and there are still 4 more pairs to deal with if they even get through this one. The wizards of the group are going to have to do something to get these damn shields down, it takes too much of her effort to knock them down and robs her of attacks. Still she doesnt see anything else she can do different at this point and renews her strategy.
Outwardly of course, none of this shows, as she roars a challenge to the nalfeshnee, and repeats her strategy of using her tail first and her swords second.

Ka'Rishta once again beats down the hastily-erected invisible shield, with only a few of her cuts making it to the humongous beast's flesh. Shield or no shield though, the thing is beginning to look seriously wounded beyond its original corruption.

Nijith calls upon the fell magic of his cursed rune, infusing his attacks with ruinous energy. His overwhelming assault finds the wounded beast's flesh and literally cuts it to pieces; the enemy collapses into a swiftly dissolving mound of demonflesh, quickly reduced to the raw chaos and evil of the Abyss.

Seeing the first demon fall, Sevixal loses no time and turns upon the second. As expected, even his massive blows are intercepted, but the shield collapses under his onslaught. Should the demon want to defend itself against Mary or Yhak it will need to use something else for it will be unable to activate the shield again for a few moments...

Of course, the monstrously bloated enemy cannot -or does not bother to- think tactically. It simply extends a 30-foot tentacle and an almost-as-large scythe-like limb and decides to hammer down on the nearest target; a certain Marilith.
Unfortunately for it, Yhak has been observing the fight and decides that a physical onslaught from a monster that large might be detrimental to the group's survival... and him getting his portion of the reward. Thus the bloated thing finds its blows deflected by an invisible wall of a nature similar to but different than its own shield; a wall of force that suddenly appeared between it and the marilith.
Less useful for all-around defense, walls of force are still capable of blocking single opponents if used correctly and are significantly stronger than hastily-erected shields; despite nearly a dozen very powerful blows, the Wall absorbs the entirety of the attack, even if it shatters at the last hit.

Sevixal enjoying the battle, begins to yell in a mixed gibberish, some parts gnome, abyssal, and common, and it would be all but impossible for anyone to understand it properly.

This time Sevixal doesn't wait even a moment longer than it takes to let his sword fly at his enemy, not caring wither it hits flesh or shield he is intent on destruction, of what doesn't seem to matter.

However just as his last strike is done, a shout of arcane power escapes his lips and sends 5 glowing red orbs of power at the grotesque creature.

The group is simply too powerful physically for the remaining demon to fight, especially with its shield momentarily expended. Nijith's attack alone wounds it critically and Ka'Rishta and Sevixal are able to overwhelm and slay it without the group expending any additional magic.

But that is when the surrounding terrain seems to flicker. One moment, you see the grotesque demons melting down, slain by your might. The next moment, the terrain reverts to its original condition before your battle begun for an infinitesimal pause. And then that sense of Deja Vu is gone, and everything is as it should be.

Or is it? You feel some serious unease at your momentary victory, as if it's the quiet before the storm. And then eight very large, very ugly and very pissed demonic atrocities appear out of thin air, moving through the dimensions to surround you despite all of the Pit's wards.

Sevixal and Kha'Rishta manage to slay another enemy demon between them while the rest of the team is considering possible actions more effective than simple attacks.

But that gives the enemies an opportunity to do something different; the remaining seven immediately scream, their flesh melting and boiling away. It turns into rivers of foulness, eerily alive black slime with mouths and eyes forming in arbitrary places. Those rivers converge and begin to reform... into a single shapeless mound. As the enemy is still reforming, a hideous cacophony comes from those thousands of mouths that somehow sorts itself into meaningful words.

PERSISTENT INSECTS. YOU MANAGED TO FOIL MY PLANS ONCE, SEEMINGLY BY ACCIDENT. A SECOND TIME AS YOU WERE CALLED BY AN APPARENT CONTINGENCY FROM THIS REALM"S NOW FALLEN RULER. AND NOW HERE YOU ARE, A THIRD TIME COMING FORTH TO SLAY MY ASPECTS, DELAY MY ARRIVAL.

KNOWINGLY OR OTHERWISE, YOUR INTERFERENCE IS NO LONGER ACCIDENT OR COINCIDENCE BUT ENEMY ACTION. FEEL NOW MY AVATAR"S FURY AND DESPAIR!

You now realize how these things have been managing to breach the area's wards and why they were nearly identical despite the hideous corruption; they were aspects, personal sendings from some greater power specifically built with one goal in mind. And by the corrupted state they were in, you also guess the reason for the attack on this very pit of souls; by devouring enough souls and absorbing enough Abyssal essence, those aspects might have been used in some sort of ritual invocation or sacrifice to bring forth their master... despite Beradax's sealing of the layer before her disappearance.
But not only you arrived quickly enough to interrupt them as they were digesting their first batch of souls but slew three of those aspects as well. No longer enough to call forth the full presence of their creator, the aspects had apparently gained enough power to summon an avatar. And unless that avatar was stopped, the enemy would arrive to conquer this layer personally only minutes after the avatar horribly murdered you.

Opposing a greater power didn't sit well with her - at least not at this point in her development - but given that planer travel escape was cut off she likely could not escape easily.

Further without knowing its abilities any attack she launched may backfire, considering quickly she moved for a desperate gambit that may answer some of those questions.

"Begone from my plane" she stated, as she tries to throw it into one of the celestial battle plans for it to fight on - one day she knew some celestial would object to this but it was only fair they banished their enemies to the abyss all the time.

Mary's spell falls upon the creature... and manages to overcome its resistance to magic! But then her spell simply fizzles; either this thing is immune to banishment or it has somehow been anchored to prevent that. Mary suspects this thing is an avatar, a technique used by some greater powers to project their presence in places they can't or won't go. If her suspicions are true, the Avatar would share some of the abilities of the Power that created it but being little more than a sock puppet into which said power could channel its power, the avatar's strength would depend on the power available.
As a weirdly-dressed succubus falls from the sky and attempts to grapple with the immense (and immensely ugly) enemy, Kha'Rishta slashes at it several dozen times. Her blows are little more than pinpricks to the massive monstrosity but even pinpricks might eventually kill if there are enough of them.
Nijith uses the power of his rune to bring destructive energies against their enemy. But this time, there is resistance; something is preventing him from accessing the full power of his items - and he realizes the enemy is covered by an antimagic field.
Sevixal advances with a powerful gait and great power in his blows - strikes that prove slightly more effective than Kha'Rishta's but much fewer in number.
The necromancer -the last member of the group that made it there- opens wide several Gates at once, intending to call significant reinforcements. But inexplicably, his spells fail outright.

Mad laughter from a voice of terror and ruin shakes the area. The monstrous enemy, still laughing from a thousand maws, seems to flicker. A moment later, a torrent of incredible cold washes over all of you.
Then the enemy turns around and swats the skyfallen succubus aside (Halia), reaches with one tentacle at Nijith and touches him. The rune that enabled him to easily damage even nigh invulnerable adversaries crumbles to dust.
Last but not least, he speaks a very powerful Word. Your necromancer ally does not scream; he has no time to scream. He simply flickers into the negative of his normal coloration, bursts into silvery bubbles that spiral around his position, then vanishes without trace. Those of you with enough magical knowledge recognize an Unnaming: a mighty spell that, if the caster knows one's true name, they can unravel them from the Cosmos and forbid their return even by bending of reality or ressurrection magic.

As the mad enemy laughs, you wonder if he has anyone else's true name to use as well.

Nijith says this as he claws the ice off his body. He avoided the worst of it, but losing his mobility was death to him.

"C'mon Halia, this is nothing to what we've beaten before. Lets show him how we play!"

Upon hearing this, Nijith raises an eyebrow even as he finishes getting the ice off.

"We can't deal with this on our own. Are you suicidal? It can UNCREATE us."

Clawing off the ice quickly;

KA'RISHTA

Even as she battles, Ka'Rishta hears Nijith. Battlefield cowardice and a lack of co-ordination in the field is one thing she cannot abide. Even as she keeps swinging, she shouts back at him.

In case you havent noticed, teleportation magic isnt operating, so we cant flee. Turn and run and he'll unmake us one by one. My thing is fighting, to keep it occupied while the wizards do their thing. And as for us not being able to beat it on our own, anything I could gate in would be less than useless. Besides, we just Halia. So if you've got something special, let it fly.

OOC:
My special ability is always active and always working, without being noticed at all, so Im assuming you are taking it into account.

"Points taken."

With a keesh, the last of the ice falls off, even as he stretches his wings and flexes his arms. He sheathes his swords, and in their place flashes four smokelike daggers.

"Good thing for you, I have expendable weapons."

That would be the abyssal aura, then? Handy ability. Then again, so is mine. :smallwink:

Mary

She backed of the scene, she needed to figure out what this thing could do and what it likely wanted, perhaps even who it was.

Other then that she prepared herself to throw up defensive barriers to protect the more physically minded amongst her group.

Trying to figure out who this is and likely weaknesses (or less strong areas that might be exploited).

I don't really have good spells for this fight, essentially she is waiting to use limited wises to generate the correct spells (or spell that would allow her trade more the one for one).

Essentially she might be able drop up to three walls (or the like) in front of its attacks.

"Whoawhoawhoa!" Halia shouts in surprise as she is being swatted out of the sky and plummeting towards the ground, catching herself in the last moment with a spin and a flourish. Reorienting herself and hearing a familiar voice, she recognizes Ka'Rishta, along with what she is proposing. The whole event is drawing a quite audible squeal from her as well as almost bursting with ecstatic energy, grinning from ear to ear. Whatever countenance Halia had about 78 years ago, it seems to have vanished entirely. With sudden forward motion, Halia throws herself forward at the avatar, her cutlasses suddenly in her hands, evershifting in their forms and properties, her sheer anarchic joy on her face teetering on the edge of madness.

"Yes, yes, yes, yes! Time to play!" And her sanity seems to have suffered during the years, truly. With almost impossible maneuvers, the succubus' blows come in many different ways from wildly differing angles, a chaotic flurry somehow finding out it is actually an immaculate dance.
Assuming that Halia got to grapple last round and just failed:

Sevixal strikes repeatedly at the bloated form of the enemy, his few powerful blows managing to put some dents into the thing's form.

Kha'Rishta, while being a maelstrom of blades, fails to do more than scratch the thing's surface, even as she feels herself subtly slowing down, her many blades being heavier, clumsier and blunter. It doesn't take her long to realize the thing has somehow extended the antimagic field over her entirely...

Nijith manages to break his prison, shattering the ice that holds him - but that is only a temporary reprieve. If the enemy can hit several of them simultaneously with his magic while still attacking physically...

Halia's blades pierce the massive form of the enemy with ease, their Chaos-essence not only adapting to suit her needs but also apparently ignoring the magic-draining aura surrounding their foe. Halia's raw skill helps; she manages to trick the abomination into lowering its guard and combined with the power of her weapons and her Abyss-drawn might, it is enough to actually wound the avatar.

Mary retreats out of the thing's immediate reach and thinks about the situation. It is immediately evident the enemy is unaffected by antimagic and that he (it?) is exploiting that for all he's worth, extending one widened antimagic field to its immediate vicinity and one cone-shaped one to the foe most likely to harm him, robbing them of their magic while its magic still works.
Since it is an avatar - a divine entity - it is possible its powers would also be resistant to dispelling, and that it could also prevent some spells from working in the area - such as Gates. But a Disjunction... that might work unless the antimagic fields stopped it and with two overlapping ones, the avatar must be feeling pretty safe - misguided though that impression might be. And deity or otherwise, it could not stop what it could not perceive - and very few beings could actually detect anything done under an altered flow of time.

As Mary is still considering and preparing to oppose the enemy, said enemy laughs. Pointing a tentacle at Sevixal, it unleashes a blindingly dark bolt of black fire that takes the demon in the shoulder... and keeps going. After having drilled a large hole through Sevixal, the bolt smashes through a boulder behind him, hits the uneven slope of a collapsed, melted-down building on a hill beyond, drills a thousand feet through the hilll and vanishes into the further reaches of the Pit, falling beyond your sight.
The island shakes as the Abyssal energy of the Pit seems to growl against the bolt's appearance, an angry sound as deep and powerful as an earthquake. You all immediately realize that bolt was not an effect cast through magic but something made out of raw cosmic or divine power... of a nature that didn't belong in the Abyss at all. And the layer itself liked its use not at all.

Still mirthful in his madness, your massive adversary slams a massive tentacle into a swaying but still living Sevixal, disarming him. Then, the disgusting, pustulent, tentacled thing slides a few feet so its antimagic spreads over Halia, Nijith and Kha'Rishta and casts another Icy Prison spell on them...

Mary

Assuming that a deity is putting effort into this then it is likely that other abyssal lords have noted - and a deity caught unaware by one might very well prove to be a worthwhile prize.

If she could determine which one would be most interested in the conflict she may be able to avoid this conflict directly while also gaining a new patron - it was something to consider.

She allowed one colleague to suffer the affects of the creature a wall of force may have protected them from the attack but she needed to move faster then that she focused her will on the creature to rob it of some of its power - then using a full wish to return throw a prismatic wall in-front of the deity as it committed to moving blocking its movement, attacks and most importantly vision.
Then finally she set her true plan in motion - a disjunction could breach an antimagic field - however she did not have that prepared, but a wish may achieve something similar if only for a moment.
Tapping into her understanding of the universe she attempted to bring the creatures anti magic protections down for a few seconds to allow her colleagues to finish it.
Telepathically she reached and any advised her remaining allies to attack now.
Then she would consider her next move.

Using Reveal Weakness to lower its saves and AC by 10.
Using wish to create a prismatic wall in front of it as it moves up.
Using wish to try and disrupt its anti-magic abilities of only temporary, her own ability might help her with understanding how to achieve this.

Also rolling knowledge local to see if there is any Abyssal lord that might show favour for finding out about this.

Mary's actions interrupt the enemy's own magic, allowing Kha'Rishta and Nijith to escape its attack by creating a prismatic wall between them and the enemy. Her alteration of reality momentarily causes its antimagic to lapse as well but you have no idea how long it will last.

The other succubus that fell from the sky is currently trapped behind a bloc of ice however and so is Sevixal. Still laughing maniacally -perhaps the madness of the Abyss infected it?- the enemy bodily picks up the trapped Sevixal with its tentacles and throws him into the lake of raw chaos surrounding you...

Mary

Her enemy was focused on others which suited her well enough - now it was for them to act rather then herself.

Using a limited wish to free the new succubus that had joined hopefully the three of them would be suitable to remove the entity.

She concentrated on defense instead.

Using a quickened limited wish to free Halia.
Saving her regular action and second quickened action as needed.
