OK guys, random question time.

Why do old books have those crazy long 'S' figures that look (to me at least) more like 'F's?

It's not like they're incapable of making normal 'S's. They have those as well (often side by side with one of the long ones). There doesn't seem to be any logic behind when a long one is used, except that the long ones are much more common than the small ones.

(For the record, the text in question is the Google Books version of the account of Thomas Paine's trial).

Any answers/crazy theories welcome :smallbiggrin:
