As it slowly but surely builds.

Hi! Welcome to the NINTH thread of Murphy's Law! As you can probably guess, this is an OOTS-style webcomic. It's comedic, yet with an ongoing, in-depth storyline. It starts out with a multiclass Fighter/Paladin named Lloyd Zephyr looking to organize an adventuring party, and quickly mushrooms from there into something much bigger...

So, yeah...Enjoy!

We were last left with an awkward silence. Who will break it and how?

My prediction is that Serrin will try to switch the subject... quickly!

Hopefully to her wounds so she can get something done about them.
Alternatively, she'll just go back to Lloyd and have him finish the whole healing thing.

This is Serrin we're talking about. She's probably back to inventing the new Gwaihir 2000 Figurine of Wondrous Power (seats 6, uses AppleMaps).

I really don't get why Radic is so angry about this. Unless Janine actively seduced her brother so that he'd break up with his girlfriend, then I don't really see the problem with him and Janine having cuddle time together, especially if it'd make both of them happy for a little while. Ripping Janine's head off - not cool, Radic.

Maybe I'm just not reading this as seriously as I should, Radic's language is more funny to me than super-serious. Going from Harlot to gators... I read it in about 4 different accents. Though it was a bit more than cuddle time.

Janine is, in my mind anyway, a very frustrating person to deal with. With what happened to her when she was growing up, it left her emotionally vulnerable, so she seeks out intimacy to prove her own worth even when it really doesn't. I think that because of everything, Janine doesn't really understand what friendship is.
Then step in Radic. Radic is probably Janine's only friend who's willing to help her get through everything. Most people would either distance themselves or take advantage of her. She's probably got a lot of stress from having to keep Janine in line most of the time anyway, and then she hears this about her own brother?
It was a bit much, but this is a serious betrayal at the best of times made no easier to handle by Radic's constant having to deal with Janine. Even the kindest people can get angry.

Take note of the panel before Janine tells her, it shows she's had to go through this with Janine many times before.

Really looking forward to the next comic, I'm interested in Serrin's reaction/perspective on the matter. This is getting better by the minute!

I imagine finding out your heartbroken brother (Radic actually says 'bad break-up' and implies it immediately followed some favor) was manipulated into a one-night stand with your best friend is going to be a major shock. Give her ten minutes and she'll regret it. Probably.

I have had plenty of outbursts when I was frustrated and felt people hadn't been listening. I usually regretted it later, but it does wonders for making people change. They hate it when you yell at them.

Coffee can attest to my occasional outburst I believe.

Been a long-time follower and Murphy's Law fan. I have to say, I really like the depth of character. Even Matt's actions make perfect sense now (in fact, a while back, during the date arc where he's trying to prove himself, I associated best of all with him), and it's really shocking how well-designed everyone was from the start. Though, admittedly, Janine's logic still manages to evade me at times. Keep up the great work.

A lot of people would consider their best friend's siblings to be off the table. I think this is because of how awkward it would be if you broke up, since the best friend would be torn.

I am confused.. who should we side with in this "discussion"? Radic or Janine, my gut says that we are supposed to sympathize with Janine; but for some reason I agree with Radic that Janine did cross boundaries she should not have, though I do think she reacted in the worst way possible.

The correct answer is, we should side with neither, but instead to sympathise with both.

It's a fair point but the way I see it *someone* is eventually going to want to spend Happy Fun Cuddletime with my siblings. I'd rather it was someone I was fond of.

That is definitely true. But the timing was completely off. There's a time to make a move, but immediately after a bad breakup isn't really the best of them...
I also think Radic wants Janine to have a meaningful relationship that isn't just Happy Fun Cuddletime. She's hoping Janine will stumble across what love really means, instead of trying to get together with every man she wants to respect her. As I've said, they've probably had this discussion so many times before that it's driving Radic insane.

Animals have pretty decent wisdom scores. Matt probably has the wisdom score of a Belkar.

About Janine, Coffee said earlier that Janine doesn't go after Matt because of Radic, among other reasons (and she's probably focusing on Lloyd too much to give any attention to Matt).

It's a fair point but the way I see it *someone* is eventually going to want to spend Happy Fun Cuddletime with my siblings. I'd rather it was someone I was fond of.

Well, Radic probably wants her brother to have a meaningful relationship, and not a guilt-ridden roll in the hay with her nutty friend. We often hold our relative's relationships to great standards...how many people can´t stand the boyfriends or girlfriends of their parents, children or siblings because "they aren't good enough"? Radic likes Janine, but she probably loathes her twisted view of "love" precisely because she likes the rest of her personality.

Even if Matt has a low will save, unless Janine used a spell like Charm Person or Suggestion he wouldn't have to make a save as Will saves != will power in game terms. As there is no actual rule for that kind of stuff I would probably rule that trying to seduce someone would be either a diplomacy or a bluff check depending on the intentions of the seducer.

MoleMage
2013-02-14, 07:48 PM
Pathfinder has a trait that gives you a bonus to diplomacy and bluff if the other person is attracted to you, so it's probably fair to say that they're at least related skills.

Note that bluff is countered by wisdom too. Diplomacy is countered by experience (or in DnD by circumstances).

Yeah, it's even worse when you say stuff like that at a game table because the GM gets ideas.

Then again, one of my theories of the origins of our universe is that "real life" is actually an RPG, with "angels," "spirits", "souls", whatever you want to call them as the players, and "God" as the GM.

It also works as a deviant of the "real life is a simulation" theory.

No, give them magic items that they have to figure out uses for, but you haven't planned for them to be useful. A sock that always smells of feet, a hairtie that makes hair oily, a pebble that talks (one campaign I was in had a Pebble of Answers, Stone of Questions, Brick of Knowledge, etc... We had to turn them on and off and they once got into an argument inside a dungeon. They gave mostly useless information, or biased info. But we had so much fun with them. Once I was sneaking and needed a distraction so I threw my Pebble against a wall and when someone asked if anyone heard it, the Pebble started talking. Everyone in our group eventually got some variation of a INSERT ROCK HERE of INSERT THING HERE.)

When I played DnD, I would throw random things onto my characters mid-game to try and shock the other players. Some highlights:

-My hobgoblin druid wanted to be a prostitute
-Dropkicking a gnome over fence
-Setting myself on fire to get rid of ticks (this one got me killed, but everyone was laughing so hard it was worth it)
-A druid I was playing was secretly a blackguard... thaaaaat fell in love with the party paladin for no apparent reason. (Turned out said Paladin was actually an angel) [The secretly being a blackguard was planned ahead of time. Falling in love with the paladin/angel? Not so much]
-Pretending to be a revenant, come to smite a man for eating his daughter alive (said man never had a child, so he just sort of stared at me and asked if I was high)
-Attempting a rap battle against a beholder (guess how THAT ended... wrong, the beholder's head exploded)

... I might've made some of those up

Some idea, I think Shiny went off on the quest by himself.

Since we are at a table when we split the DM asks us as we go around what each of us would like to do, then plays a little with one group before moving onto another. If someone attempts to talk to someone that they are not near, the message still gets heard, because it is shouted across the town. We got kicked out of a town once for that.

Heh, nice stories.

I wonder if in table top is like in NWN (CRPGO) and giving results whether rolls fail or succeed hav funny effects.

I was DM in a module for a bit and, since I'm evil DM, in a spot roll (or any skill roll that can work that way) I didn't say "you see what you need if your roll beat the DC and nothing if your roll didn't", but "if your search was enough I'll tell you what relevant thing you noticed; but if it's not enough, I'll tell you notice something that's worthless". That meant some times the quest dragged on and on, but some times it was amusing.

One time a group of PCs stumble upon the corpse of a recently murdered man in the woods. They investigate. "Roll search". *Not enough*. "Okay, you notice there is a really big bee hovering by the tree closer to you". Cue the party's druid interrogating the bee. I decided to cut them some slack for amusement points and let the bee have passed something relevant and hint the way to keep looking (in an obviously very vague manner, since animals aren't supposed to grasp any complex concept in FR). Unfortunately it had become so late I had to log and there wasn't the chance to follow up :(; but I found it amusing how the players would work with whatever I told them even if it should've been more than obvious that the roll was a failure and hence, my answer was random useless things, that should be recognized like such by their characters. But it was also something that allowed for some fun moments and good playing by them. Like the instance exposed, which was much fun and good played, actually.

on his way to woo a wife.
His helmsman is
a hero bold
who will defy danger for him.
His own bride
he brings back to the Rhine;
but to me he brings - the ring!
You sons of freedom,
cheerful companions,
gaily sail away!
Though you deem him base,
you will yet serve
the Niblung's son.

What exactly happened to her?

I got the impression that she was sexually abused or raped, for a long time repeatedly. She is completely messed up.
It's kind of common for women to measure their self-worth in terms of attractiveness, but she seems willing to kiss men who aren't attractive to her just to "prove her worth".
Which is not normal, even for someone who has grown up in a world that objectifies women, and who feels very insecure.

But it seems the man who has done that to her is just considered "dangerously possessive", not a criminal of the worst sort? How can that be?

I sympathize with Janine in that discussion, and honestly cannot understand how someone can talk like this to her when all she did was sleep with a man who was willing; even though it might not have been a wise decision.
Normally you would expect the person who hasn't been through a breakup to be wiser, but after what happened to Janine she can't be expected to make sensible decisions for other people.

Now, her molesting men is different, she should be called out on that, and I would actually understand anger in that context. But this doesn't seem to be what happened.

Pretty much sums it up. i believe what happened is that she was told it was the only good thing she was good at the entire time, with it being the only sort of reinforcement she got as she was growing up, it became burned into her mind that "if it came up so much it must be true!" or the like.

As for the final question, most likely he prevented her from telling anybody, or anyone who was aware of the relationship, was not aware enough to know what was fully going on, and just assumed he was over protective or the like from what they did in public.

They were also both clerics, so some "god says it's okay" shenanigans may also be involved.

Probably. It's just that ... if I can deduce from what she talks like that she has been raped/abused then why can't a cleric whose job seems to be healing people, see that?
Okay, maybe he's only healing bodies and doesn't want to see the truth for some reason. Of course my deduction can be wrong, but I think he should have asked what exactly happened after she told him what this Johan did to her.

I do hope she gets some help soon. Not just accusations, not even explanations. It is obvious explanations aren't enough to change her messed-up way of thinking.

There's always a degree of tue-seeing when it comes to readers of a story, we can see how characters act in private, and can take our knowledge from that. however in public the character may act very differently, and any times their privacy was interupted, it may warrent nothing more then an odd look and an assumtion they were merely doing something the interupter was unaware of.

For example assume darth vader loved kittens, so much so that his private quarters is filled to the brim in the small felines, wich he spends all of his free time cuddling and playing with. He's still the exact same darth vader we and the rest of the star wars cast are aware of, it's just that when nobody is looking, he likes to cuddle kittens.

For what I've read, I got the impression that orc, Quark, had her as a slave or something while she was a child, and he was the first to abuse her and teach her that she was good only as a sexual object. Later, when she was fourteen she met the priest guy, Johan, who at the beginning was nice to her, taught her how to be a cleric, gained her trust...and then pressured her into having sex, telling her that he would kick her out if she didn't comply, reinforcing her idea that people would want her only for sex.

Johan probably was careful enough that he couldn't be accused of rape, just of having sex with female novices (he used brainwashing, emotional blackmail and the threat of kicking out Janine and Roxy, not overt violence).

I think Radic's anger was at the fact that Aludean was emotionally vulnerable and probably feeling at fault for the relationship ending (My understanding of "getting over a bad breakup", but I could easily be miustaken. ^_^') and Janine implied having used this to get sex. Essentially, Janine was reinforcing the idea that Aludean was only useful for sex and never for anything more.

While indeed, Janine very much deserves sympathy and comfort (I really wish I could hug fictional characters now! >_<), that does not make the actions excusable. Janine broke Radic's trust and tried to gain something from someone, while knowing that their emotional state would make it difficult for them to say no. What has happened to Janine is a much greater wrong, but we need rights to fix that, not to ignore the smaller wrong.

I'm not sure whether Janine really wanted sex in the first place. She is so messed up I can imagine that she slept with him to get him to trust her, she said that "worked".

He was emotionally vulnerable, but then, so is she, all the time. And she doesn't even seem to be able to understand that a man might actually want to say "no", so I don't think she consciously took advantage of his vulnerability.

Of course she has, if I recall correctly, done some things that could be called molestation, but calling her a slut is the wrong course of action here. That's not what "slut" usually means.

@Clistenes: I can't even remember an orc - read the first part of the comic too long ago I guess. But yeah, that does make sense. Slavery would mess her up like this.

Like a blade of a sword I am forged in flame
Fiery hot
Tempered steel fire-bright to the night I take
I fear not
Now compelled by something I cannot see
I go forth surrendering to history

Your glory, I swear I ride for thee
Your power, I trust it rides with me
Your servant, I am and ever shall I be

Through a dream
I have a come to an ancient door
Lost in the mist
I have been there a hundred times or more
Pounding my fists
Now inside, the fire of the ancient burns
A boy goes in and suddenly a man returns

I gave my word and gained a key
I gave my heart and set it free
There's no turning back from this odyssey
Because I feel so alive suddenly
And I wonder, is this really me?

Love theme for Radic and Matt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_RKO5ozLVo)

I gotta tell you what I'm feelin' inside, I could lie to myself, but it's true
There's no denying when I look in your eyes, girl I'm out of my head over you
I lived so long believin' all love is blind
But everything about you is tellin' me this time

[Chorus:]
It's forever, this time I know and there's no doubt in my mind
Forever, until my life is thru, girl I'll be lovin' you forever

I hear the echo of a promise I made
When you're strong you can stand on your own
But those words grow distant as I look at your face
No, I don't wanna go it alone
I never thought I'd lay my heart on the line
But everything about you is tellin' me this time

[chorus] - yeah!

I see my future when I look in your eyes
It took your love to make my heart come alive
Cos I lived my life believin' all love is blind
But everything about you is tellin' me this time

Wizards aren't the only sources of crazy magic. Don't forget insane gods and random variances in ambient magic levels.

And sorcerers.

Which reminds me of an idea I had once where an epic-level wizard was always wanting to create new life forms, but to research epic spells of that magnitude is ridiculous (it takes something like four seeds). So he would just round up all the low-level spellcasters he could and make a big circle of people giving up 1st or 2nd level spell slots to mitigate the high DC for the spell. And whenever anyone got uppity he'd throw off some high level spell to demonstrate how he could erase them from ever existing and yell "Get back in the circle!"

Tangent on a tangent.

The worm that burrows
Through your brain
But you are the beast

You send your children to war
To serve bastards and whores
So now you know
You created me

On the day that you were born

Unholy
I was created by man,
yeah I'm the Lord of the flies, you know I'm

From the left hand of power comes the father of lies

What's the difference between something being implicit or explicit?

Implicit is implied, but not stated outright (ie. you have to read between the lines). Explicit is directly stated, usually without obfuscation.

In this case, it is explicit that Mass Orgy refers to sex involving multiple people, but everything beyond that is implicit. I think it is kind of like how one can talk about a war without getting into explicitly describing violence. ^_^'

If you mean the forum filters, they are supposed to filter swearing. Intercourse and orgy can refer to sex, but are not considered vulgar, while the name of a certain white whale is (Filters cannot tell context, sadly). ^_^

On the topic of orgies, apparently the Danish equivalent (Orgie) can refer to a wild party, a feast of alcohol, and a secret religious worship (primarily those celebrating Dionysus), but not sex. How Roman-tic! X3

Where I went to 5th grade, they happened maybe twice a week for a few weeks because of high-schoolers trying to get out of... I can't remember if it was midterms or finals. They put up bomb-threat posters and such, and everyone had to run out.

This wasn't something that would have affected us (different building, down the street), except that the place the high school evacuated to was the recess-area for the 4th-and-5th-grade school (still not sure why there was a separate building for that), and some former students would always come up to our class to say hi to the teacher.

How common are they out where you are?

I have alot of memories of lockdowns.

First one I was in, I was in 2nd grade and didn't know what a lockdown was. Schoold never taught me before hand. It was recess, and suddenly the bells were going off earlier than normal, and they were going off constantly rather than a few seconds. I was confused, but was making my way back to my class, which was on the opposite side of the campus. Some random teacher was yelling at me from her door incoherently, as well as at other students around me. I contined toward where my class when suddenly I felt myself being dragged into the teachers classroom, where I've never been before. I kept trying to say that my classroom and teacher were on the opposite side of the campus, but I kept being shushed at. Then the lights were turned off and I was shoved under a desk with 3 other students I didn't know, but they were 4th and 5th graders atleast. I had no idea what was going on, since the school decided to, oh, forego teaching me what a lockdown was in kindergarden or 1st grade.:smallannoyed: The cause of the lockdown, some 5th graders decided that it would be a good idea to throw some rocks at a beehive they found just off campus through the chainlink fence.

Most other lockdowns happened when a robbery or a suspect happened in the area. These happened atleast 1 or twice every 2 years. Then there was one lockdown in middle school when it started hailing heavy, though that was probably more for the PE classes outside than the rest of us (Where I'm at, hail and snow don't exist.)

And then, twice in high school, same year, once in each semester. The school was placed in lockdown because the police got an anonymous phone call twice that a student had a gun in their backpack. Both times happened when I was in geometry class. Both time happened when we were in the middle of a major test. And both times, the teacher told us we'd take the test the next day, and didn't change it at all, so we got the same questions where we could study and prepare for that night. The calls were faked, but swat was called in both times. It was humourous one time where the students in my class were texting their friends in the music department, the place one of the gun's were rumored to be, and were starting to panic that their friends weren't responding back. After 10 minutes of them freaking out, I finally said, "Guys. The police are probably there and searching their bags. So of course they won't respond back to you."

So yeah, I'm no stranger to lockdowns.:smallamused:

3.5/homebrew for Aequar, maybe a touch of pathfinder? It would be a relatively short city campaign with a plot but with lots of optional sidequests. It would take place in Runite about 100 years before Murphy's Law.

Of course it would. And that would actually work out pretty well.

I'll be playing an elven necromancer. Don't worry, I think I know how to handle a DMPC. He'll just be support, flavor, and there to help you guys out if you get really stuck. And if I'm getting too overbearing, don't be afraid to smack me over the head. Pathfinder is better balanced, although the Cleric, Druid and Wizard classes are still far ahead of the rest. I'd recommend level somewhere between 5 and 9 which is what most people consider the 'sweet spot' of the system.

But before you decide, remember that sleep is good.

That's what the comic said. Janine DOES have problems. But the things Radic shouted at her weren't about those problems. They seemed to be about sex.

Or so I would assume Serrin thinks.

Radic stepping down so easily to that argument just irks me, but that's because I would not take arguments given by a bleeding halfelf with jagged bits of metal in her back on something that "feels good" being good seriously.

They weren't about how sex is wrong, though. They were very angry statements on how Janine had slept with Radic's brother for little to no reason other than he was available, even if not initially willing. I don't even know how Serrin got the idea that Radic was denouncing sex, because I didn't read that. She didn't say anything about how sex was wrong, she said that Janine was "looser than rotten rope" and a slut, because she fits those descriptors pretty well. She isn't a flipped copper piece from a whore because the copper piece isn't even necessary. None of it was a condemnation of sex as recreation, it was objecting to Janine sleeping with anyone she feels the need to so that she can satisfy her own ego and sate her insecurities, objections or intentions of the other party be damned.

Serrin then came in and defended Janine with a Free Love argument, even though that is completely different than what Janine does. I think Radic was terrible cruel, and that those words had no need to be said. But "What other reason could you possibly need" does not justify Janine and I don't know how it could shut down Radic so easily. She didn't show any unreasonableness when it comes to sexuality, she just got very angry when she found out that Janine took advantage of her brother so she could feel better about herself. "Love and sex don't work like that" does not imply that Radic somehow doesn't know that sex is fun, and I don't see how being told that sex is fun could be a mind changing statement.
(Sorry about my constant editing. It's a problem.:smallsigh:)

That was a very good analysis, Mutant Sheep.

You're right. That's what Radic's condemnation was. But Serrin didn't hear that. All she witnessed was Radic calling Janine a slut, and Janine running out of the room crying. She didn't observe anything else. Radic backed down because she realized that she went a bit too far with what she said.

This is probably why I got so worked up. Radic is taking responsibility and avoiding conflict by not exasperating the issue. I would get more angry if an elf came in bleeding and started berating me over my angry reaction to information like that. But I have never liked the "it feels good, so it cant be wrong to do" argument, and in this case it doesn't even work because of widely divergent circumstances! I would be angrily defending myself (and probably insulting Serrin for jumping to the wrong conclusion and then yelling at me) instead of calming down and seeing how being an angry yelling lunatic doesn't help my case.

It takes practice though xD I'm guessing Radic has seen plenty of stress in her life. +1 to Serrin.

There are so many good metaphors for a unicorn hunting license - perhaps hunting for a mythical creature (your being of desire), or because you're just too busy doing other stuff. Some of my friends would acknowledge that I've asked them "What's so great about sex anyway?" xD

I think Serrin's main philosophy is, "Does it feel good? Do you want to do it? Does it not hurt anybody? Then what's holding you back?"

Given Serrin's last endeavor, I say she has a little difficulty knowing when that would happen.
