Yo,

It has been a long while since I played any form of Warcraft 3, but I have the Warcraft Battle Chest sitting right here and so does a mate, and we would like to play Tower Defence.

Back in the day, I had a huge collection of Tower Defence maps, though those have all been lost to failing hard drives, and would be pretty out of date now (still usable if I had them, but probably better ones available).

So, my question to all of you Playgrounders is thus: What are the best Tower Defence maps for Warcraft 3 (either with expansion or vanilla, it doesn't matter) and where should I get them? We want to play cooperatively, not competitively, and all work along the same path(s). We'd prefer not to have a whole convoluted mess of paths and different starts so that, say, 1/8 of the creeps spawn from each point and race to 4 different exits. We'd prefer to have one (or two) start points to one exit (joining in the middle if more than one start point exists). Must be playable with only two players (there may be more of us at different times, but there will be only two of us for some of the time). Playable doesn't mean easily winnable through all of the waves, just that we can indeed survive the first ones and get a decent way through them.

Thanks everyone!

Oho. A fellow Tower Defense fanatic.

Let dust off my game and list down some that had occupied me:

Cube Defense - One of the classics, IMO. Towers are for most part, balanced, and there's surprising variety of builds you can use to win.
Gem TD - My favourite. Gives you five random gems (read: towers) each round, you pick one to keep while the rest turns to stone. The real challenge? Saving up gems and trying to combine them into more powerful towers, all the while praying that RNG is kind to you and gives you the gem you need to get THAT ONE PERFECT TOWER. Mazing is a must.
Elements TD - Another classic. No mazing here. You get to choose an element every five(?) turn and its up to you to play to their strengths and synergies different elements.
Poker TD - You heard me right. A TD based on poker. But, it is actually fun! Like contemporary poker, you get five cards (read: towers) and one chance to change your hand. Your highest hand would then become your tower.

EDIT: I should note these TDs are pretty much balanced around V.Hard or the equivalent of most difficult. :smalltongue:

As mentioned, Power Towers is a good one. I'm not sure if it quite fits your qualifications, and it is definitely tricky.

I'm definitely a fan of Twilight Tower Defense (No connection to the novel), and, um, that one that was officialized that had minigames.

I can't be the only one who's first instinct is "Wintermaul." Though be careful of the spinoffs and "updates" those are often really messed up.

"Wintermaul Wars" has always been a favorite of mine.

I was always partial to Burbenog TD.

Let's see what I can find...

-Soldier tower defense
-Line tower wars
-Warcraft maul
-Shopping maul
-Pokemaul
-Green TD
-Super Mario TD
-Legion TD
-Lazerus TD
-MTG TD

Mind you, these are just ones that I found in my maps folder. I can not vouch for their balance, functionality, or fun.

None of the 'maul' TDs play particularly well with two people, at least from my experience - Wintermaul Wars and Wintermaul One are exceptions to this, but don't actually meet your criteria of being cooperative/building together. I make no promises with the links below, some of these maps have ridiculously large numbers of versions:

MtG TD (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/36090/) - While you aren't actually building together, you have a shared life total and each player gets a spell or two which can be used to help your teammates. I'm informed that this one is particularly tough when played with less than 5 people, though.
Green TD (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/9836/) - Cooperative! But eight spawns leading to one exit - if you play as the last two defenders that won't be something you would notice much, admittedly.
Warhammer 40k TD (http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/maps-564/warhammer-40k-td-5-06c-76493/) - shared life pool, one spawn per player but you can build together and they will always pass through your maze once on the way to the exit.
Day of the Cow TD (http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/maps-564/day-cow-td-v-0-99b-78742/) - I'm not a hundred percent certain if you are able to build together on this one, but there is definitely a game mode which makes it so if someone on your team leaks any units, they are sent through to the next person's area.
Cube Defense (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/24529/) - one of my favourite TDs, I believe there is a team mode and if you build between the cubes you can build together. Not sure how well that would work, mind.

Possiblities:
Green Circle TD (http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/maps-564/green-circle-td-gold-v1-8-a-127213/) (different version (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/179039/)), Mafarazzo TD (http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/maps-564/mafarazzotd-v2-6-a-79355/), Mort's Power TD (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/41365/).

Going to provide what I think are links to some of the games other people have listed. I don't consider all of these to be cooperative, but variety is always good: Gem TD (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/22972/), Elements TD (http://forums.eletd.com/WC3-Element-TD-43b-t2258.html), Poker TD (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/552/), Power Towers (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/105519/), either Twilight Tower Defense 5.6 (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/4517/) or Twilight Tower Defense 6.5 (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/148853/), and Burbenog is either this one (http://www.mapgnome.org/map-info/476965) or this one (http://www.mapgnome.org/map-info/382586).

I'm definitely a fan of Twilight Tower Defense (No connection to the novel), and, um, that one that was officialized that had minigames.
Skibi's Castle TD is the one you're refering to, I think that it actually comes with the game - also, fun and fits the criteria I think. :smalltongue:

Hmm, under those constraints, I'd say Green TD (and it's variants, like Green TD Pro, Green TD Apocalypse, Green TD Wipeout, etc.) is probably the best (I prefer Wipeout, personally). It is beatable with two players, and it is pretty challenging if you haven't played it before. Mafarazzo TD (usually shortened to Mafa TD) and it's various spinoffs are also pretty good, but they tend to cause epic amounts of lag in the later stages and have an extremely painful learning curve.

As for getting them, epicwar.com (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/) has a bunch of WC3 maps on it. However, it can be a real pain to find good versions of a map.

Edit: Green Circle TD is pretty fun, but it would be really hard to beat with only two players (if you could survive the early stages it would get a lot easier, though.)

Skibi TD? That is pretty fun, and it also fits Rawhide's requirements.

Many of what's already suggested here is good, but Wintermaul is by far my favorite and I'd argue that it's exactly what got me so into the genre as a result.

Carnac's TD is actually quite good, or would be, if the creator wouldn't have decided to be incredibly rude in the announcements. It's still pretty good, but I leave it to you if you want to put up with the juvenile language.

Wintermaul and derivatives were definitely one of my favourites, to the point where I made my own version called WarCraft Maul. I wish I had finished my WarCraft Maul II, which was going to be so much better and actually balanced. :smallfrown: If you want to play a map made by me I'm sure it's lying around somewhere.

Cube Defence and Elements TD were also fun.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, I've downloaded quite a few.

In other news, I've found it! The tower defence I cut my teeth on! What was the best version of this series of tower defences (http://www.epicwar.com/maps/53103/)?

The only one I've found that has the ability to actually build the units (the version you linked and some of the others require food to make them, without providing anything to get food with) is 3.1b (http://www.mapgnome.org/map-info/259103), but if you don't like that version then mapgnome has 24 different versions (http://www.mapgnome.org/query/2830247/sort-downloads/east/1) of it.
