This is a thread for my 3.5 edition PBP game. So far, I have invitation responses impending, so I'm just waiting for them. In the meantime, I thought that I would start a thread for it.

Hello,
I am an experienced player of irl games and I am willing to play any party role that is unfilled by others, or to make a fairly self-sufficient character. No experience with PbP, but I am a good writer and I check the forum daily or more, so I am sure I can learn the ropes quickly.

Any houserules, rules variants or other info that I should be aware of as I start coming up with character concepts? Any other introductory info about the premise of the campaign or relevant stuff for your setting (magic level, role of gods, default/custom cosmology, etc) that you think I should be aware of?

Thanks, and I look forward to some fun.

I have only one houserule: Arcane and divine ley lines.

An arcane ley line is a natural force, where arcane power naturally flows. Any arcane caster that casts a spell near a ley line gets a +1, +2, or +3 to all numerical effects of a spell he or she casts, depending on the strength of the ley line. (This includes attack rolls, save DC's, damage rolls, etc.) This amount is not changed by an empowered spell. However, casting a divine spell near an arcane ley line has a negative impact on the spell: any divine spell cast near an arcane ley line takes a -1, -2, or -3, depending on the strength of the arcane ley line.

Divine ley lines are the same thing, but carry a bonus for divine power, and carry a penalty for arcane power.

Wait, shouldn't this be in the recruitment place? I was like confused why there's so little responses until I saw the thread was held in the in Character side of the forum. Or maybe is it just to handpick specific players?

IamL

No, 'cuz this is going to be the main thread for the campaign. I just figured I'd get it up and posted first. Also, yes, I tend to handpick people who can fit into my style of DM-ing.

Very sorry about the delay, lemme see here. Character generation should go here, I guess. On second thoughts, let me yammer on about stuff on the other thread. Currently I am looking at making a halfling factotum. The rules about divine and arcane ley lines are going to make some kind of arcane/divine concept very appealing.

Would the ley lines affect the factotum's SLAs from arcane dilettante class feature?

Yas392
2013-02-25, 11:29 PM
Yeah, I still need DM to clear up whether my Infuse would be affect like a divine spell as well due to its nature of being SLA.

EDIT: Hmm, I think it might effect SLA. DM might change it to fit his ruling.

Note: For Yas392 only: As a noble, you recall mention of Dusgard as a prosperous mining settlement, so, when you leave your family's estate, this is where you head, hoping for some kind of employment. The city is laid out in a compact way, which one would expect for a city built on a ledge on the world's fifth highest mountain. The road is treacherous, but after some haggling over the exact value of renting a mountain goat, you make your way into the heart of the city. Make a Gather Information check.

As he arrives at the city, maneuvering the goat that he rented around, he could still hear the clanking of the picks coming from a distance.

The settlement is indeed foreign to me. I have read and heard of it but this is the first time I see it with my very own eyes.

Glancing around, there are people walking by and he stops by to ask them.

"Hello there, could you fellow men give me directions around the city? I am fairly new to this land."

This degree of "noise" could be the best place to lose them and start over. No matter what eyes, how sharp they are, Edge Malginz would be dead to them and in place, a nobody no one could ever recognize. Hah, just try to catch me now, watchers. I will never join you.

Alright, I am going to play a halfling rogue.

I am looking for a balanced Athasian halfling w/out level adjustment...when I converted the race to 3e, I just went with the flavor of 2e, normal halfling but wiser and with some xenophobic tendencies. Basically -2 str, +2 dex, +2 wis, -2 cha.

The only official stuff I can find for them is moronic...adds in some psionics, a scaling athletics bonus, +2 dex, +2 wis, all for a +1 LA (seems like WotC version gave all dark sun races a +1 or higher LA).

If you let me go with the balanced stats, +0 LA version, it basically is normal halfling with those stat adjustments. I thought there was a homebrew out there that did the same thing. :smallannoyed:

The flavor I am going for is just member of a feral halfling tribe that was driven out of its forest homeland and into nearby human settlements.

Default will just be to go with normal halfling. I'll keep looking for the homebrew. I expect to be done with the character sheet this evening.

Banelle

"A mining settlement," Banelle mused to himself.

The cool breeze sends a primal thrill through him; even in this foreign landscape, his tribal heritage lurks ever at the back of his mind, and he finds himself subconsciously looking around for tree...buildings that might provide cover and shelter. He shifts his pack to the other shoulder.

Might be a good place to hide out, lay low for a while. May have picked a few too many locks and pockets in the last town. In any case, a change of scenery is always a good idea...can't tell just how far the networks of those slavers might reach.

Yawning, he looks around to find the best way to get into the city without attracting notice.

"Hmm, somewhere to work, perhaps..."

The tall people can be slightly disconcerting, but the popular occupation promises newly made fortunes, heavy purses, and people looking to celebrate.

If you're looking for a job, you'll have to wait 'till Saturday, when a much larger market is held. You'll want to head towards the mining stall and ask for Gortek. He's a bit gruff, but he knows a good soul from a bad one. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to eat my lunch.

You recall more than you even remember learning about this settlement. You know that it's a small but relatively well-off town, comprised of mainly dwarves, gnomes, and humans. Other races aren't prominent, but there are three or four halflings and one or two of a few other assorted races. There's a small temple to Moradin, which one would expect for a mining settlement that depends on the strength of their stonework to survive. There is a large market held here every Saturday.

Phelix-Mu

Banelle

"Sounds like the Market on Saturday might be a good day to figure out who is who in the business scene. Until then, take it easy, blend in."

More like try to get some sleep. The mountain climb made for some good exercise, though, and it would be wise to follow a similar routine. Sounds like setting up a daytime pattern at the local inn, then sneaking out in the evening, before the darkness sets in and all the interesting people head to bed.

Dwarves, though. Sheesh, probably gonna have to lay off the pocket inspections. Angry dwarves...does that qualify as ancestral vengeance? Might as well be.

He surveys his sleight frame.

Not enough of me here to make angry dwarves an acceptable outcome. Some of their mining implements probably weight more than I.

On the other hand, I have a chance of outrunning a dwarf....

He looks for a low-cost option for temporary lodgings, having enough coin to support a couple days of taking it easy during the day. Somewhere along the main road into town might be nice. He actively is keeping his eyes peeled for any of the halflings that he knows might be active in the town, whether running wagon stalls or masquerading as children, or any of the other things that halflings often do when they find themselves soundly in the minority.

It would have been wise, but my character isn't in a big hurry, so now is a good time to learn this lesson, whilst in a (hopefully) low-pressure situation.

"Must be more bushed that I thought," mused Banelle.

He picks a spot close to City Hall, maybe in an alleyway, somewhere out of sight, and takes ten minutes to catch his breath and relax.

After said duration, he moves back into the street, taking his time, breathing slowly and deeply, and thinking out his next move.

"Hmm," logic wasn't his strong suit, but a common sense approach should work.

Now, if I put my back to City Hall's main entrance, and face the town, then I'll go up and down the main street, noting all the businesses on the right hand side, then crossing the street and noting all the business on the left. I'm looking for an inn or hostel of some kind, firstly, but I'll also make note of any social gathering places/bars/restaurants that I might want to check into later. Finally, other short people. The halflings are probably my best bet for job prospects, but gnomes may also prove more fruitful territory than the Tall Folk.

"I'm in no hurry, so I'll just look around until I find what I'm looking for, or something else interesting."

He wanders around town, this time taking time to drink in the sights, breathe the fresh air. He also keeps his ears peeled for anything interesting that might be heard, and references what he earlier remembered about the town. Sticking to crowds and avoiding tourist behavior, he hides among the tall folk whenever possible, otherwise just avoiding gawking and standing in the middle of the street.

Well, the congregation is usually for meetings, not relevant for people like him that is unless interesting news is abroad. The exploration of the settlement has gone quite well, it was not easy getting lost. I mean they are only houses, the ways are not as complex as the larger settlements. The people here weren't so bad, they were lukewarming despite having gruff accents. This walking around is tiring, he is getting parched. Sooner or later, he really needs some drink. What should he buy? Ale?Rum? Nah, do not want to be a patsy during bar brawls. Milk or juice is suffice enough.

Then, Edge notices a midget, sneaking and scurrying around, darting into an alleyway. It amuses him a bit.

He needs help, I mean seriously..

?!

A feeling arouses his alertness to his surroundings. Near the city hall, suspicious people, overhaul. When he look at them, they pretend that moment never exist. Unforgivable. He despised being watched. Hated Every Minute Of It! One of his hand balls into a fist. If they don't like me, fine. But if they need me to prove to their superior to be accepted into the community, then so be it. I'll show them my conviction that I can be trusted.

Yas392:You find out a few things about the dwarf due to a friendly man at town hall: His name is Dupalt. He was born in Dusgard, and he had, and still has, a reputation as a philanthropist and a helper of the poor. He was a devout follower of Moradin, and paid his daily tithes, despite what little he made in the then-barren mines. After leaving the mines, he would heal those who suffered from lung problems from working in the mines (lower middle level cleric). He struck a vein of gold with his partner, a gnome named Hilitac, fourteen years ago. He resides in Dusgard to this very day. The gnome, however, is harder to find information about. You find minimal facts besides his name and place of birth, an obscure, small settlement, barely more than a motley collection of houses bordering Orc lands called Alor. He worked with Dusgard, and was cheerful and would lend a hand for those who needed it, but he didn't live, and rarely stayed the night, in Dusgard. The man at city hall starts telling you about a mining accident that happened to him, but is cut off by his superior's icy gaze.
The guards hand you two extensive forms to fill out. You need to fill out the type of weapon, weapon's appearance, length, width, hilt size, the weapon's place of creation, the smith who created it, if it is magical in any way, shape, or form, how long ago you got it, and if you have any formal training in it. The next is about personal information: Your name, your place of birth, If you have ever broken the law, the family you come from, your height, weight, hair color, eye color, and any distinctive scars or marks. You also have to sign at the bottom of both forms.

Phelix-Mu:You see a person with a rapier being led to town hall by a group of guards, who are chatting with the person they are leading, which tells you that the person isn't in any major violation of the law. The beer is good, as is the rye bread given to you on the side. The people eventually shuffle out, and the halfling gestures at you and says, "I have a bit of a problem. Nothing major, mind you, but it does need solving."

It's Never too early to start earning favor or coin.

Banelle moves fluidly up to the bar, coming close to the other halfling and smiling in a conspiratorial manner.

"I'm planning to be in town for a while, supposing things go smoothly. I can always use a job to keep me busy while I'm getting settled, though. Keep in mind I am fairly unfamiliar with everything that is going on around here. What exactly did you have in mind?"

Okay, nothing out the order.

He checks the both sheets. Inside, he felt awed by the second sheet.

Woah, woah, woah..He is not going to reveal that he's noble blood, it's too risky. Weapon is fine, it's not purchased in his hometown and the smith is at least well-known. Personal details, on the other hand, he would use the identity he would go by when he's off duty, living with a relative that is middle class as a foster son which is Geed.

"There, done"

He handed the sheet back to the man.

"Very...interesting...."

Deep breath. Feeling that desirable object urge, but really, glyphs...magic...could be out of my league.

"I'll...um...hmm..." says Banelle, slightly distracted, "I'll need time to look at it. I don't want to interrupt your business here. Do you have a private place where I could look it over?"

"Also, before I get started, I could use a few supplies. I guess you're not in a hurry, so maybe I'll return for the box in a little bit."

First, it wasn't clear to me that the bartender is actually letting me take the box with me? If so, then I will pick it up from him after I visit the alchemist.

Traveling to the alchemist, Banelle thinks over what could be useful in figuring out the box.

Borrowing or buying a magnifying glass might be good. Perhaps the alchemist will have one. Also some acid might be good in case the lock proves beyond my abilities. Finally, some string or wire...if I find a trap, I may need to trip it from a distance.

"Dum dee dum," the halfling hummed happily as he entered the alchemist's shop.

It may have been sent to the recipient with the intent of killing him, after all."

The halfling carefully considers what kind of people in this town might be in a position to know about magic.

Figuring out this box is like figuring out a labyrinth laden with tricks and traps.

He rubs his temple. Hearing Banelle suggestion of finding some who has some expertise about magic, he give a deep thought. Wait, I just remembered that I know a bit about magic and magical artifacts before. Why didn't I use that knowledge before? Stupid. It could also be a religious artifact. Or the possiblities of an object made by a foreign being or a foreign being trapped inside if my assumptions of item inside is indeed giving signs of fragility and uniqueness based on the sound given.

Facing the halfling, he utters.

"Wait. Let me try to analyze it once more. It is clear that I over-analyzed, only considering the logical factors."

He fumbles with his pockets sheepishly, his face red, then attempts once more.

That's weird.

"I can't possibly think why the box should be warded against undead in particular. If the rest of the glyphs magical protection, then we probably should try to figure out what might happen if the traps accidentally go off. That way we can try to protect ourselves."

Getting a little restless....

The halfling is starting to fidget a bit. Subtly at first, but it's clear that something is making him a little uncomfortable. He gets up and paces for a minute or so.

"So, it seems that the best thing to do would be to research what the glyphs do. We can trace them onto paper and ask around, or maybe there is a library with a sage of some kind. Might also be a good idea to ask the owner for more background on the box.

He nods, turns, then scampers off, gesturing for you to come in. He's rather nimble for his venerability, and he leads you a medical supply area. He takes three or four large bandages and wraps them around your shoulders, where the shuriken hit. His brow furrows as he moves to apply them, however. "What were you doing playing around with shuriken?" he asks.

" 'Playing' isn't really the word that I would have used for it. The short person that was spying on us at the inn introduced me to a couple of his pointy friends when we finally caught up with him."

The halfling winces.

"I was lucky he wasn't trying to actually kill me; he seemed to intentionally miss. I can hardly imagine why."

Banelle stifles a yawn, as the last of the adrenaline from the chase peters away. He stares blankly at the floor as the Alchemist finishes binding the wounds.

Suddenly, he comes to.

"Oh, I just realized we were never properly introduced. My name is Banelle."

"And I'm the alchemist," he replies.

Bartimaeus5: As you finish climbing up the steep mountain pass at the end of your five-day trek from the Elven port city Hikal, you realize how late it is. The wind blows rather strongly and the chill is deep, yet another harbinger of the coming autumn. The mining town of Dusgard is compact, which you would expect for a city built on a ledge on the world's fifth highest mountain.

"Fair enough. The guy over there is Geed; we're working together on some jobs."

The halfling tests out the bandaging, and is satisfied, lacing back up his leather armour.

This Alchemist seems to know what he is doing. I'll have to keep him in mind if things go south.

"And I figure I'd be treated to a pack of lies larger than this mountain if I asked what kind of job, no? But that doesn't really matter. If either of you gets yourself cut up, give me a holler and I'll help you out. There's healing salve on those bandages, by the way. It'll work its way through the average person's system in about ten hours, but, given your slight frame, I'd figure around eight."

"Well, thanks again, Sir."

The halfling looks around the shop for a moment, then turns to Geed.

"Hey, Geed, I'm gonna go check out a couple things before heading back to my room at the inn. I'll meet you back there."

The halfling ducks out of the shop and heads back to the main street of the town.

Wanna be able to get a good sleep tonight.

Beginning to sprint up and down the street, Banelle jumps around and runs in an effort to burn off some energy. After several minutes of heavy exertion, he is pretty tired out. He heads back to the inn, thankful that the cold night air has kept him from breaking out into a sweaty mess.

Edge nods as Banelle introduced him, following him inside.

Ouch

While Banelle was being bandaged, he winces as he feels his legs buckle under pressure.

"If you do not mind another patient for the night, Alchemist, would be kind to treat this one's needs? Our target had not left us all free from the condition that is hazardous to our health."

He collapses on the floor, energies spent.

Maladcit groans as he reaches the end of his ascent, wiping the sweat out of his face, he eyes the town spread out below him.

"There we go, Lady. The t-town of Dusgard"

Lady the Eagle calls softly in response and settles on Mal's arm, her beak gently caressing his nose.

"I know, I wouldn't wish to set f-foot in there either, but I have to resupply. I'm g-growing weary of only eating game."

With a grunt, the tender elf begins his long descent towards the town. Slightly unnerved by the prospect of leaving nature and entering a big settlement, he talks to his bird, explaining about the various herbs and trees they pass on thier way to Dusgard.

Maladict walks the streets of Dusgard, looking lost and out of place. Slowly walking up the street he's making a mental checklist of the supplys he intends to purchase. His thoughts are interrupted by the peculiar sight of the bloodied and bandaged Halfling sprinting up and down the street.

I'll never understand those citydwellers. Mal thought to himself. Clearly the choatic urban lifestyle of this place has driven the poor soul mad.

As the halfling starts walking back to the inn, Maladict calls out to face him.

"E-e-excuse me s-sir. A-are you in n-need of a-aid?" asks Mal. his facial experssion one of worried concern. As the halfling turns to him he begins regretting his question. The shy and reserved elf does not interect well with strangers, espcially in a place he feels so uncomfotrable in. Already he misses the reassuring presence of Lady on his arm.

High in the air above the town an eagle calls out from the sky. Maladict seems reassured by the cry. Thinking of how his avian friend would think of him a fool"I'm s-sorry for taking f-fright. As you can see I'm a bit t-tense." Maladict composes himslef and continues to say "I'm afraid I am not so good with c-c-city people." he gives off a shy smile. "I would appreciate if you help me negotiate the r-renting of a room for the night." he says. This is not as hard as I thought it would be, with those nice people help I might actually sleeep IN the c-city. Even in his thoughts, Maladict has some problem with the concept of sleeping in Dusgard, however he is excited about his self-proclaimed braveness. Being raised in the woods, his survival skills were always good enough to allow him to sleep outdoors, he has never slept inside a settlement bigger then a small village and is curious of how citydwellers Inns look like.

Edge shivers from the night's breeze. As he steps inside the compound, leading to the innkeeper, all of his worries are dispelled by the fire dancing in light. The dead hours does not disallow alluring strings of fragrance from eliminating nearly all your senses, it is acceptable yet mediore to his tastes. All these managed by a shining torch of dazzling sunshine. A petit lass but nonetheless hardworking.

"Don't worry about being nervous. Crowds of Tall Folk can make me feel awkward, too. You'll get used to it, I'm sure."

The halfling stifles a yawn.

"Anyway, we can talk more in the morning. I am eager to hear more about your travels and the wild areas around here. Good night."

The halfling opens the door to his room, secures it behind him, and proceeds to get ready for bed.

Too sleepy to remove my armour. But I should place some daggers close at hand.

The copper-toned halfling removes an almost humourous number of daggers from hiding places across his body, placing them on a table beside the bed, reflecting as he does on the events of the day.

Gonna have to get my dagger back from the spy. Grrr....

The halfling sighs out loud.

Time to relax, though.
