How would you design a 5th level magical investigative team to secretly perform searches without the target ever knowing? It looks like a Beguiler could do most of the work, but it'd be useful to have a Wizard or Cleric around too. Note this is mostly a thought experiment, so there aren't any particular game constraints.

Useful spells:

Beguiler:
Invisibility Sphere
Silence
Knock
Arcane Sight
Expeditious Retreat

Non beguiler:
Fly
Blink
Locate Object
Scholars Touch
Pass Without Trace
Water Breathing

Does anyone know any other useful spells? Everything can be done by a Beguiler + Cleric except for Blink. The problem is that Blink is required to get through walls and other barriers. It's also really hard on the spell slots since it's 3rd level and only lasts 5 rounds. It would be really nice if there were a replacement.

Other than that, Pass Without Trace is important to defeat guard dogs, but it can be UMD'd. The Cleric is needed for Scholar's Touch and Locate Object in order to actually do the searching once you get in.

Edit: The Wizard is also needed for Fly (Heart of Air is a bonus).

Silence isn't exactly stealthy. Having a guard suddenly unable to hear their own breath or footsteps is immediately going to attract their attention. And they'll only need about a single move action to get out of the spell area so they can raise an alarm.

I was thinking of them using it to cover the sound of their footsteps, opening drawers, etc. But the range is going to be a problem. Invisibility Sphere also has this problem, though at least that can easily be fixed by using regular Invisibility.

Add to the list of "Good Spells to Have" on your Cleric, Augury. Before you even get to the point where you have to worry about AoEs screwing up your plans, you should be able to cast the spell, ask something like "If we follow (the plan), will (Success Parameter)?"

It'll PROBABLY tick off the DM a bit. DMs don't like divination I noticed, least in my experiences. But it's such an obvious, logical thing to do. Yeah you might burn a spell and get no result. But presuming your plan doesn't take over 30 minutes to actually enact, casting that at the last minute should let you know if you all need to go back to base because you got Woe and overlooked something.
