View Full Version : Making a Pathfinder Pixie Race

A player in my campaign wants to play a pixie, more for rp reasons then for power in build. By preference (both me and the player), we like to have the race balanced with the core pathfinder races so we do not need level adjustment or anything on those lines. If people were curious he is going to play Bard then something... forget what. Does matter really in race design.

Standard Racial Traits

Ability Score Racial Traits: Pixies are physically weak but surprisingly fast, and their attitude makes them naturally agreeable. They gain +2 Dexterity, +2 Charisma, and –2 Strength.
Type: Pixies are Humanoid creatures with the fey subtype.
Size: Pixies are Small creatures and thus gain a +1 size bonus to their AC, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, a –1 penalty to their Combat Maneuver Bonus and Combat Maneuver Defense, and a +4 size bonus on Stealth checks.
Base Speed: (Slow Speed) Pixies have a base speed of 15 feet. and fly speed of 30 feet, but must land at the end of every round until flight skill is 15.
Languages: Pixies begin play speaking Common, and Sylvan. Pixies with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following: Draconic, Elven, Giant, Gnome, Goblin, and Orc. See the Linguistics skill page for more information about these languages.

Defense Racial Traits

Magic Resistance: Pixies gain a +1 racial saving throw bonus against Enchantment and Illusion spells and effects.

Feat and Skill Racial Traits

Keen Senses: Pixies receive a +2 racial bonus on Perception checks.

Magical Racial Traits

Pixie Magic: Pixies with Charisma scores of 11 or higher also gain the following spell-like abilities: 1/day—dancing lights, ghost sound, prestidigitation, and speak with animals. The caster level for these effects is equal to the gnome's level. The DC for these spells is equal to 10 + the spell's level + the gnome's Charisma modifier.

Invisibility (Su) A pixie can turn invisible if it has a Charisma of 11 or higher. This ability can be used 1/hr, and the pixie can suppress or resume it as a move action.

Offense Racial Traits

Special Arrows (Su) When a pixie fires an arrow from any missile attack (bow sling, crossbow, etc), it can decide to change the arrow's properties by sprinkling it with magical pixie dust. Doing so is a free action as long as the pixie is the one who fires the arrow. A pixie can generate a number of uses of dust equal to its Charisma mod each day—the dust is useless to another creature unless the pixie gives the dust freely. In this case, the pixie chooses what effect the dust will have on an missile when it is applied, and it takes a standard action to apply the dust to the missile. Once pixie dust is applied to an missile, the pixie's chosen effect persists on the arrow for only 1 round. As long as an missile is altered in this way, it does not inflict damage when it hits—it only causes its new effect. A pixie can choose any one of the following three effects when dusting an arrow. Save DCs are 1/2 HD plus Charisma mod.

Charm: The target must succeed on a DC (see above) Will save or be affected as though by a charm monster spell for 10 minutes.

Memory Loss: The target must succeed on a DC (see above) Will save or be affected by a modify memory spell (this effect can only eliminate the previous 5 minutes of memory—a pixie typically uses this ability to make the target forget it encountered the pixie so it won't chase the pixie when he flees).

Sleep: The target must succeed on a DC (see above) Will save or fall asleep for 5 minutes.

Senses Racial Traits

Low-Light Vision: Pixies can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I rather not have the player have to roll something else just cause I can't figure out a balanced race. Thanks for help.

Did you use the race builder?

Going from the assumption that, by the race builder, standard races are 9-12 point builds. We're going to ignore that fly is an advanced trait too.

Pixie
Type: Fey. (Yes, I know that means they aren't valid targets for a lot of good spells anymore. That is a downside, Aasimars and Tieflings have to deal with that too.) (2 points)
Size: Tiny. (4 points)
Ability Scores: -2 Str, +2 Dex, +2 Cha (Since you want -2 str, +2 dex and +2 Cha, and Tiny gives an Inherent -2 strength and +2 dex, all you need is +2 Cha. We'll call that -1 because, unlike humans, you don't get to decide where that plus +2 bonus goes.) (-1 point)
Languages: Standard array (0 points)
Move: 20 (-1 point) Fly of 30 (clumsy) (4 points)

Other traits:
Magic Resistant: This one provides less than half the bonus that elven immunity provides... Let's just roll this in with your keen senses.

So:

Keenly Aware: Pixies are very perceptive of the world around them and so have a +2 to perception and a +1 saving throw bonus against Enchantment and Illusion spells and effects (1 point)

Pixie Magic: Is clearly the same as Gnome Magic (2 points)

At this point you have an 11 point build.

Thanks for the feedback. With your point system it. Might tweak what spells (was using the gnomes as the basis). Drop the arrows like you did should work out fine.

Thanks for the help. (other opinions are welcome too)
