While I know people will be listing all kinds of themes from video games they simply like a lot anyway, the idea of this thread is to share those themes which you think are the most kick ass music from four decades of games.
(Since this is all about music and not playing games, I put this here and not the Gaming General forum.)

I hope I am not killing any chance for competition by starting with the Soul Reaver Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtTv-Cj3eu8).

Since people have different definitions of Kickass your likely to hear many different themes.

Like here is one I like:

The Robopon 2 Battle theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFMfc3942GQ)

Or the Megaman Battle Network 6 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWE_s4QjS2k) theme

That one makes me cry every time.

I don't think another musical theme gets me so into the mood for kick ass adventuring as Skyrim's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J5XRl6RKk0).

Cervantes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pa-KcpZHrI)
And Voldo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcL5GOoDqzs)

From the game Soul Blade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqFjUfUcDs8)

And that's not all, there's also... no. I'm not doing this. I would be here all day if I listed all great video game themes I've heard. There's just too many.

Here's the most recent, from Fire Emblem Awakening: Divine Decree (Ablaze) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SoddBoCSlo)

Wild Arms 3. It plays like it's an intro to a real anime and comes in three flavors (English, Japanese, whistling score) which can get randomly picked each time you start up the game.

I'll also agree with Skyrim's theme being quite the pinnicle of the adventure's score.

Kickass is a vague term. You're asking music that puts one in the mood for kicking ass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mgfwq5SBQ3Q)? Or music that kicks ass by itself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnVp5l7AGFY)? Or some sort of combo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTYMPIFyYa4)?

Wait, main themes only, or any theme? Nintendo has a lot of good stuff... like Ashnard's battle theme (http://www.serenesforest.net/media/fe9music/18%20-%20To%20Challenge%20Ashnard%202.mp3) from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, or almost anything from Smash Bros. Or the Champion or Legendary battle themes from Pokémon.

Crush 40 also puts out good stuff... Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 had Open Your Heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH_MCPcjxP0) and Live & Learn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gPBmDptqlQ).

It has to be Rock'n Rocks from

While the series is meant for kids I've always felt Pokemon had some awesome music. For example Ghetsis's Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLdjl65jAB8) from Black and White is one of the most evil sounding things ever. While Blue's Champion Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lu6SWY3jjgE) really gets the blood pumping.

BG II, menu. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i38_6oNPE24) Everytime I listen to this song I feel.. empowered. Ready to conquest the world.

Tales of Vesperia opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AXgbmt7_LQ) First RPG played on 360, simply the opening amazed me.

But the top one, for me, as "charge to fight VG music", will always be Fight On, FFVII Boss battle theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVBM3bX7xdw).

(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pshv1xNO-jY) I cannot praise that game's music enough, it is simply awesome.

The main theme of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, Hekira no Sora e Izanaedo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DscHVikq_E).

The boss battle theme of Blue Dragon, Eternity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvHMBPHXUUo).

The fight music from Devil May Cry 3, Taste the Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADaaTOIatEY).

In the category of games that could have been but now never will be (:smallfrown:), My Little Pony: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obJ21k3Hylo&feature=related) Fighting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHglQRvbzOc) is Magic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIPOeXQ793Q). In their own way, a lot of the "Cornered" themes from the Ace Attorney series. It's not really literal ass-kicking music, but it always gets me fired up to hear these songs playing as Phoenix (or Apollo) brings the evidence together and lands a resounding blow of logic! 2002 is a little weak, but 2001 and 2004 are great.

Don't have the youtube links handy (except a few I looked up) but what comes to mind:

Final Battle from Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

Tracks from Xenoblade including:
Unfinished Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0DE5zyRI6U)
You Will Know Our Names (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4vCEHpv6Hg)
One Who Gets In Our Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS7XVMNNZI8)
Engage The Enemy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAW4xlbyu28)
and a few others (the middle two are boss themes and the outer ones are cutscenes IIRC)
and Gaur Plain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xweRl4LZlmo) for something a little lighter

Almost every character theme from Chrono Trigger, as well as World Revolution and a few others I'm probably forgetting

Pokeremixstudio's edition of basically any Pokemon tune that would already qualify; particularly the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon tracks (Primal Dialga is the notable one)

Let's see, what have I been playing recently?... oh, speaking of Pokemon, the BW2 champion theme (SPOILER TITLE) reminds me of Rainbow Road from Mario Kart (any of them). And Cipher Admin Battle.

The alternate menu music from Super Smash Bros Melee (and its Fire Emblem track come to think of it)

Lots of assorted FF tracks (I've been playing 6 lately, so Terra's and Shadow's Themes, as well as all the battle music)--which reminds me of this little gem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMFCM0SKbnY)...

Golden Sun:
Walking Forward with Determination
the final cutscene music
Venus and Mars Lighthouses
the various battle musics

Maybe I'll think of more.

Almost every character theme from Chrono Trigger
I am rather fond of Robo's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEOSLHZwKwM) myself. If only because when I played Chrono Trigger and first heard that theme I seriously thought my DS was Rick Rolling me for a moment.

Also, to bring up some new ones, Sonic and the Black Knight: bad game, very good music. Knight of the Wind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwFyC6uI34c&feature=related), Through the Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA4gNcJIl88), and Fight the Knight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U0rQ2KgmEc) are all good ones from series regulars Crush 40, but I think my personal favorite was the final boss theme, With Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce89xE1rLHc&feature=related), by a different group, All Ends.

Super Robot Wars music is pretty damn awesome in general, and there are so many themes linking just a small fraction of them will take ages.

Also, Rising Sun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZxK58tPU4I) from Okami. The most triumphant final boss battle ever.

Also, Terminal March (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-aexLJKwME) from Bastion. It's both adrenaline-pumping and completely unique in its sound. Really, just listen to it.

God Hand: PS2 game. Action beat 'em up. Kinda like Devil May Cry or God of War, without the jumping puzzles or riddles. Lots of different options for fighting moves. Very comical, apparently too weird for IGN (they gave it 3.0. But hey, who listens to IGN?). Goal was to be both comical, and appeal to core fighting gamers.

There's not enough Pokemon in this thread.

Pokemon has some amazing music to kick ass to, such as Cynthia's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whX6TVUDF-E), Cyrus' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLn9WlR_A80), and Giratina's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odvMnKBBI88). No points for guessing which game I liked the best ;)

And, of course, Red's theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSKxTqDvsas), Red's theme is freaking awesome. The FRLG Gym Leader (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVw9zYg0Juo) theme, too.

I actually think the FRLG Gym theme might be my favorite out of the entire series.

Also, I've always thought that the Final Fantasy X battle theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C34BzC7rnos) was one of the more awesome ones.

Ratchet and Clank 2 Arena Theme
Go ahead. youtube it. I'll wait.

Lots of awesome music from Valkyrie Profile, sadly the soundtrack for the sequel (along with most other things involving the sequel) was terrible.

Nights into Dreams had some good material. The Reala boss theme was excellent.

Speaking of Sonic Team, Sonic Adventure 2 had some cool themes. Live and Learn, Throw it All Away, and Bullet Station. Going into other Sonic games, Battery Zone has lots of excellent remixes, Sonic Boom from Sonic CD is actually a pretty cool tune. Big fan of Hydrocity, most of the remixes of Labyrinth Zone are decent, Chemical Plant Zone is still one of my favorite songs, along with two good remixes. I'm not familiar with any Sonic games past Adventure 2 so if I'm missing anything good, please point me to it.

Batman: TOS on Sega Genesis had some excellent tunes.

The Mechwarrior 2 soundtrack is an unappreciated gem. Try Iron Piston/Wolf Trial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB0oxICsbOI).

Hell March has already been linked, but is worth mentioning again.

Some mention should be made of the goddamn funkiest song ever written, the Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFOp3E17-hY).

Actually, the Vanu are not as dubsteppy as most people think. Not gonna deny an element of it in their music though. Full vanu OST (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8KDOtlzfYs)

So many great themes in this topic!

I’ll still have to go for my all-time favorite tracks from Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness:

Orc 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uDM8GJa53c)

Human Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcL8GZDurys)

What’s really impressive is how such old tracks can still give me the chills to this day. It was pretty much the Warcraft games that made me pick up D&D, back in the day, and I remember how I would so often listen to these tracks while writing adventures.

True work of art, indeed.

Never watched that show myself. Given the way you wrote it though I'm guessing that's not a good thing for you. Fair enough - I didn't exactly find the clip you linked funny either. Different tastes and all.

But my clip was more over the top!:smalltongue:

Well, if you want over-the-top, I can always break out the Devil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPLFEf6eyuc) May (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx2mgrK1J0c) Cry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MZdrJZo_ig) clips. Less funny and more just fun, granted, but over-the-top as all hell.

Hm, I already linked to DMC3's fight theme back in my first post here (and sort of did above - you'll see what I mean if you watch the middle clip), so here's DMC4's: The Time Has Come (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4uR_fEmy1c) (Nero's) and Lock and Load (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmDSFmtEIOQ) (Dante's), which are both pretty good (though I prefer The Time Has Come). To keep this on-topic and all.

Not quite. Some of the same people who did the first Devil May Cry game, including the director, Shinji Mikami, worked on Clover Studios titles like God Hand, but the Devil May Cry series from 2-4 was in different hands. And all of the clips I linked to were from 3 and 4, and for a reason - that was when the series took on its deliberately silly, over-the-top style. Before that the writing was either unintentionally so-bad-its-good (DMC1) or just bad (DMC2).

Here's the only cut scene you need to see. If the cut scene in this video isn't hilarious to you, you will not find the game hilarious. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhOgX3Ykx3s)

Let me break it down for you: it's Kung Fu Hustle + Trigun(without he gunslinging) + just a dash of Yu Yu Hakusho.
Yeah, the gag humor is the biggest draw.

Still, if you don't find the scene utterly obnoxious, it's a good action beat 'em up without timed (or untimed) jumping puzzles and riddles.

That clip was about as funny as the average episode of 2 and a half men.

Hey, that show used to be good.

The writing has little to do with why people liked DMC. The chopping has a lot to do with it, and the chopping was significantly impacted by Atsushi Inaba.

Inaba was captain of many other projects which deserve mention here, including Okami (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D566niVB0lQ&list=PL1AC584471FD4F040) and Bayonetta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCUe7UyA_Ec)

Blockade is probably my favourite from the AC4 soundtrack, but there was a significant step up in orchestration and quality for AC5.

If that were true, there wouldn't be so much of a negative reaction to the recent reboot among long-time fans. Yeah, the combat is the main draw, but the tone and style of the series, set by the writing, has a lot to do with many peoples' enjoyment of it as well.

Plus Dr. Epic and I were specifically talking about over-the-top scenes, not gameplay segments, so the writing was kind of what the conversation was about.

The chopping is also rubbish in the new DmC (compared to real Devil May Cry). Had old Devil May Cry been rubbish at chopping, no-one would have cared about it still, no matter how tasty the cheese in the cutscenes.

:smallconfused: Um, no it isn't. I mean, I'm no fan of the game (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14748019&postcount=1286), but credit where it's due, the combat is quite good. Easier than in the other games (besides 2), which is a problem (particularly when you reach the last boss and realize that it's literally a pale shadow of DMC3's because the challenge is gone), but mechanically solid and pretty fun overall.

True, but irrelevant to the point I was making, or to my earlier exchange with Dr. Epic.

I nominate the bulk of The Binding of Isaac's soundtrack. This example (http://youtu.be/L55nDF9c_M0) is just for generic bosses. It gets even better when you square off against the story-specific ones.

(Fair warning to those unfamiliar with the game, it involves a lot of potentially disturbing imagery and subject matter, and some of the themes in the game are used in such a way that they will probably offend. Topics include, but are not limited to, religion and child abuse). That said, Danny Baranowsky's soundtrack is made of pure win.

Hmm, since no one seems to have mentioned it, I'll nominate

Four Part Plan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IWW6iOnJ90) from Portal 2.

(ok, that's not the official name of the soundtrack, but I like it better)
