View Full Version : Making my first wizard; need some suggestions for metamagic feats and PrC.

Before we get started: the campaign is Pathfinder, but the DM is allowing the use of 3.5 PrCs and feats.

I've dipped in the class a few times before, but I've never just done a full-on wizard. I was thinking of doing a horimyo (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/wizard/archetypes/rite-publishing---wizard-archetypes/horimyo) 5/incantatrix 10, though I'm considering taking horimyo to 8 in order to grab the animal companion tattoo and increase my school specialization powers (I'm taking the void school, probably fire opposed).

The character is a CG tiefling (12/18/14/20/16/6).
I'll probably take the fiendish sprinter (maybe vestigial wings) and soul seer alternate racial traits.
I'll be using the favored class bonus to increase my daily uses of my reveal weakness ability.
For skills, I'll be be focusing primarily on Craft (Tattoo), Knowledge (Arcana), Knowledge (The Planes), Sense Motive, and Spellcraft. Not entirely sure what else just yet.
For traits... well, magical lineage is of course attractive, but I'd prefer to use these to help reflect fluff, and I don't know the Pathfinder spell list well enough to just choose one spell that early in the build.

With the Craft Spell Tattoo (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/3rd-party-feats/rite-publishing/item-creation-feats---3rd-party---rite-publishing/craft-spell-tattoo-item-creation) and Craft Wondrous Tattoo (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/3rd-party-feats/rite-publishing/item-creation-feats---3rd-party---rite-publishing/craft-wondrous-tattoo-item-creation) bonus feats from horimyo, I have a decent crafting base, essentially giving me slightly more expensive scrolls and wondrous items that can't be stolen, don't need to be retrieved to be used, and are difficult to destroy; and are significantly faster to create than traditional magical items (1 hour per DC (I guess of the spellcraft check?) rather than 8 hours per 1000gp). With the metamagic focus of Incantatrix and general utility of metamagic rods, I'm almost certainly going to take Craft Rod to supplement my craftiness.

{table=head]Character Level | Class Level | Feat
1 | Horimyo 1 | Arcane Manipulation, Craft Spell Tattoo
3 | Horimyo 3 | Craft Wand
5 | Horimyo 5 | Craft Wondrous Tattoo, Iron Will
7 | Horimyo 7 | Reach Spell
8 | Incantatrix 1 | Invisible Spell
9 | Horimyo 8 | Residual Magic
11 | Incantatrix 3 | Craft Rod
12 | Incantatrix 4 | Quicken Spell
13 | Horimyo 9 | Opposition Research (Enchantment)
15 | Incantatrix 6 | Spell Mastery
16 | Incantatrix 7 | Easy Metamagic (Quicken Spell)
17 | Incantatrix 8 | Uncanny Forethought
19 | Incantatrix 10 | Craft Contingent Spell, Metamagic?
I'm feeling pretty good about the feats I've selected so far; for the Incantatrix's last metamagic feat slot, however, I'm considering dazing spell, persistant spell (PF), chain spell, persistant spell (3.5), sculpt spell, and split ray.

So I need some suggestions on what metamagic would be good for what roles. And if I don't go Horimyo 10, I could use some suggestions for other PrCs to fill the remaining 2 to 5 levels.

3 levels of divine oracle allow you to roll your percentile twice on divination spells. Archmage is always a classic. If you grab divine oracle, the first level of loremaster is an easy dip for a feat. Halruaan elder is great for 5 levels, it gets you circle magic and -1 to two different metamagic feats.

Master Specialist (Complete Mage) can be pretty sweet as well. It can be entered early, the Minor Esoterica can be rather handy, and it'll let you pick up a spell from outside the Wizard list. If you are using non-magic school specialization, it might not blend.

If you can, the 3.5 version of Persist is a pretty good option for an Incantatrix. Persisting other people's spells will make them rather happy.

Alright, I went through a few more books and a couple of 3.5 wizard handbooks, and have come up with the feat progression below. (I already edited my original post to reflect the changes.)

{table=head]Character Level | Class Level | Feat
1 | Horimyo 1 | Arcane Manipulation, Craft Spell Tattoo
3 | Horimyo 3 | Craft Wand
5 | Horimyo 5 | Craft Wondrous Tattoo, Iron Will
7 | Horimyo 7 | Reach Spell
8 | Incantatrix 1 | Invisible Spell
9 | Horimyo 8 | Residual Magic
11 | Incantatrix 3 | Craft Rod
12 | Incantatrix 4 | Quicken Spell
13 | Horimyo 9 | Opposition Research (Enchantment)
15 | Incantatrix 6 | Spell Mastery
16 | Incantatrix 7 | Easy Metamagic (Quicken Spell)
17 | Incantatrix 8 | Uncanny Forethought
19 | Incantatrix 10 | Craft Contingent Spell, Metamagic?
I'm feeling pretty good about the feats I've selected so far; for the Incantatrix's last metamagic feat slot, however, I'm considering dazing spell, persistant spell (PF), chain spell, persistant spell (3.5), sculpt spell, and split ray.

I realize wands aren't really ideal for wizards, but I figure it's a good investment for the party; and when I get residual magic, having wands or scrolls around of spells I already have memorized essentially gives me repeat spell without a spell level adjustment at the cost of (a) having made a wand and (b) a wand charge, which is far cheaper than a Repeat Spell rod would be.

Still not sure what to do with my last level. Another level of horimyo (probably stuffed in some time after the 9th and before the last level of incantatrix) gives me another level of favored class bonus, and another point of bonus on saves vs. spells and SLAs, which is certainly nice; but I have to wonder if there isn't something that wouldn't be better for one level. Halruaan Elder would be great for adroit casting to lower Quicken to a +1, but there's no way I'm taking the prereq feats for a one level dip, even if the DM were willing to refluff the class for his decidedly not-Faerun campaign world. Something with another useful bonus feat would be pretty cool.
