I have been facinated with the Idea to make a world were you can combine things to make stuff (and make it mathumatically right) so im working on a Clockwork/Steampunk world that is based around pathfinder rules.

In a world were magic ruled over everyone (making alot of wizards really snobby and arrogant) there was a small gnome town that had paid tribute to a orc wizard called Gaston for "Protection." Gaston would run a muck through out the town every other night, getting drunk and threatening people at the bar or casting illusion spells to mess with people.
One day Gaston went to far and on that day was a huge wedding. A young Clock smith named gobnar and his soon to be wife gobnaret (they thought it was cute......gnomes) were soon to be called to the stand and become one. Gaston showing up (under the spells reduce person and some illusion magic) joined in on the wine and alcohol of the party thought it would be a good idea to wed the couple. so before they started gaston kidnapped and tied up the priest and posed as him.
As soon as the couple walked out and stood infront of Gaston he threw up all over the bride and groom before even saying a word. then he made a rain storm so that he could "wash off the bride." the whole wedding was a ruin.
For 20 days and 20 nights all gabnaret could do was cry and cry and said how much she hated gaston. Gabnar could not put up with that ANYMORE!!!!! and hid in his dads clockwork shop and began on thinking of a way to kill this wizard. day in and day out he was always at the shop thinking, screwing, placing, and always tightening these small springs that hurt and throw the screws around. "I wish these screws would hit gastons face instead of me" gobnar was thinking. "exept i would make the screws bigger and have a bigger spring so it would hurt alot more. i bet i could hit him with one if i had a way to aim it with like barrel........and i would need a trigger and some way to aim the barrel.....maybe if i just mount it to my shoulder?"
Sortly after the first clockwork Pistol was invented (rifle for gnomes lol) gobnar set out to make more. pretty soon the whole town knew about this clockwork rifle that would shoot deer and even make shooting bears much easyer. soon the whole town was buying them instead of bows. most important about the clockwork rifle was that you could get it at a cheaper price if you meet at gobnars house on the first snow..
the first snow came and most of the town assembled with there rifles were they were throwing a fake drinking party for gaston to show up. when the drunk wizard arrived at the front door everyone open fired on orc wizard. after 10 min of everyone shooting at the wizard (he was dead after the first minute) they all gather around and saw the work of the clock smith and cheered and parted and pissed all over the wizards body.
soon after clockwork reached everytown and soon wizards were becoming hunted and killed but that didn't stop the most powerful or cunning of wizards. and then steampunk was invented. eradicating the most powerful of wizards but not the sneaky and cunning ones

Magic is far and few in this campaign so im mostly concentrating on the stuff that my players will make

Like for instence you want to make a regular clockwork rifle you will need

Gears (small to large)
barrels (short to long)
Spring (small to large)
crank
Trigger
stock

take a look at the Ratios and you could make a simple rifle like this
.

Ratios
MVA = Movment action

Springs
Small: 1D4 -1/2 MVA Move 20pounds
Medium: 1D8 -1 MVA Move 40pounds
Large: 1D12 -2 MVA Move 80pounds

Gears
Small: +1/4 MVA
Medium: +1/2 MVA
Large: +1 MVA

Small: 30ft max holds 1 small spring
Medium: 100ft max hold 2 small or 1 meduim spring
Large: 200ft max holds 4 small or 2 mediums or 1 large spring

Water Tanks
Small: 2 gallons
Medium: 4 gallons
Large: 12gallons

Wheels
Small: 5ft speed max
Medium: 25ft speed max
Large: 50ft speed max

Crank:
Small: 2 small gears, or 1 medium gears
Medium: 4 small gears, or 2 medium gears, or 1 large gears
Large: 8 small gears, or 4 medium gears, or 2 large gears

Steam Copasiter
Small: 4D4dmg -1/2mva 30ft
Medium: 4D8dmg -1 mva 100ft
Large: 4D12dmg -2 mva 200ft

Alchemic heater
Small: +1/4 MVA
Medium: +1/2 MVA
Large: +1 MVA

clock work Motor
Requirements Move Actions Dmg
Small: 1 mva per turn, D4 of springs 8 mva till it runs out 1D4
Medium: 2 mva per turn, D8 of springs 12 mva till it runs out 1D8
Large: 4 mva per turn, D12 of springs 24 mva till it runs out 1D12
Pump
Pump Dmg
Small: 1/3 gallon 1D4
Medium: 1 gallon 1D6
Large: 3 gallon 1D12

2 small Gears
barrels Medium
1 medium Spring
small crank
Trigger
stock

So basically it dose 1D8dmg, 40ft range, and can reload without having to use more than there move action.

Now if we were to only have one less gear
1 small Gears +1/4mva
barrels Medium
1 medium Spring -1/2mva
small crank
Trigger
stock

since your character didnt have enough gears to turn the crank fast enough you will have to spend another turn reloading
so if you wanted to do something crazy like

2 small Gears +1/2 mva
barrels Long
1 Large Spring -2 mva 1D12 dmg
small crank
Trigger
stock

you could shoot and deal 1d12 but it would take you 4 turns to reload (good for sniping on the run i suppose)

I've toyed with a madtech equipment mounting system sort of based on tetrus
each bit of equipment got a random shape but the battle armor had mounting
system were everything was long and thin (arms and legs) or oblong chest and head

So the sonic Blista Blaster may end up T shaped so it would not fit on the 2x5 arm unit
so it would have to be chest mounted. extra work could change the shape so it would fit on an arm.

I wonder if you could do something similar... small cogs are three block units and could be bent or straight, large cogs could ten blocks and be really sprawling (and therefor not so useful) or really compact and therefore very expensive.

The designer has to fit the components together to make the smallest possible arrangement because the total length x total depth gives the size/bulk/weight of the device.
you can get a better device by using better (more compact) components.

Does this make any kind on sense?

There's a fair bit of steampunk homebrew here that you may want to look at.

I don't know what system you are using. If you are using 3.5/PF then most of this should be good to go, and if not it probably can help provide some good ideas. The steampunk PRC contest (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=208114) has some very good stuff as does the steampunk baseclass contest (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=206927). I'd also recommend Jiriku's machinist class (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262484).

Thank you for replying and sorry it took a while too replay

I think i get your system so its like the minecraft crafting table and can be any amount of squares depending on the appendage? if thats the case then you could work with alot of things with it.

I wonder if you could do something similar... small cogs are three block units and could be bent or straight, large cogs could ten blocks and be really sprawling (and therefor not so useful) or really compact and therefore very expensive.

how i was thinking of it was that the gears fit into the crank and depending how the crank was (small to large) is how many gears you could fit into the crank.

The new ratio would look something like this

Crank:
Small: 2 small gears, or 1 medium gears 2x2 block
Medium: 4 small gears, or 2 medium gears, or 1 large gears 4x4 block
Large: 8 small gears, or 4 medium gears, or 2 large gears 8x8 block

but since im trying to let my players build stuff without them having to be on themselfs but maybe on other things like ships, buildings, poles, etc. We would need to put something in that would allow it to have more space.

Like a (small +2x3) stalk of a gun would hold the (small -2x2) crank would be mounted on it and a trigger (-1). then you could mount the barrel to the stalk and the barrel could give like +2x2 for a scope -2x2 or something.

Thank you for the awesome links! they have been helpful in making a class im building called the engineer that basically has a huge backpack with a motor in it that can hold many gadgets and devices inside of it
EX
1. Grapple hook -2
2. Parachute -2
3. wheels -4
4. clockwork motor -4
5. Spring Loaded -1
6. Artillery -4
7. Jetpack -6
8. Door ram (door breaker) -3
9. Crafting -4
10. Person launcher -3
11. confining straps -2
12. Spot Light -1
13. added Gun -2
14. Underwater propultion -4

and using mjlush block idea is how he can fit and arrage stuff inside of it. I have Stats and alot of work done on the class but i dont know how to post them with them looking like junk.

Think more Tetras than minecraft I can't really do the ascii art so I'll try a toy example

imagine all componants are four squares and the weight of the item is total length of the
jigsaw x total height in units of 10 grams

A T peace weighs 60g 3 wide and 2 deep as does the zigzag and the L these represent cheap components (though L is more desirable)

The line and square weigh 40g ie 1x4 or 2x2.represent expensive components

Now to make something with two cogs and a leaver if you use expensive parts you can pack it into 3x4 space (2 squares and a line) if you just use T shaped stuff it ends up as 4x3 with 3 'waste' spaces.

Now consider a system where small components are random shaped 3 squares, medium are 5 and large are 7. The player gets the shapes and has to fit them together to make the smallest possible height x width. This will probably end up pretty bulky the can then
'work' on their design by moving squares on a individual components to make its overall footprint smaller this costs time money and skill rolls and but they can only move it over by one square at a time moving it round a corner costs double. If he move makes it overlap with another component they have to rearrange the whole device

You could have expensive parts (one block smaller) or cheap bits (one block larger) and now you have a new kind of treasure a nicely shaped bits FX a 2x3 large cog would be really treasured.

<sorry for the snip :-)>

I Have been wanting to make a steampunk world that you could build things inside of it and have little limits and no magic
Sorry all the things arnt lined up for some reason and it wont let me correct it.

the system is based around simplicity and pathfinder

Rules

RULES TO BUILDING

1. 4 Micro objects = 1 slot

2. Steamcopasitors have to be close to fired object (bullets). if not beside object the the object will loose 1d(dmg) for every 1ft away.

3. 5 pounds roughly = 1 slot. or DM descresion

4. All attributes are proportioned in a manner that is simple

5. items cannot be build outside of its slot area into another like out of your backpack to your belt.

6. if you dont meet the movment speed required for EX:
mva = movement action

7. Crank Hold Gears! thats were gears mostly go.

1 small gear rotates = 1/4 mva per turn
1 small spring full tighten is 1/2 mva

my small gear cant turn fast enough to fully tighten my spring soo i will have to wait another turn to use my movment action again and fully tighten the spring. if it was a medium spring (1mva) then it would take me 4 turns.

trigger: activates obj. -1slot
crank small 1/2mva -1slot
handle +2

and now im left with 1 slot on the barrel if i want to add scope.

One of my Favorite parts is Hydraulics

The basic idea behind any hydraulic system is very simple:

Force that is applied at one point is transmitted to another point using an incompressible fluid.

The fluid is almost always an oil of some sort. The force is almost always multiplied in the process.

-1 micro slot per slot area.

Hydrolic fluid moves pound(lb) from one slot area to another.

hydrolic fluid can be split into as many stems as possible just divide proportionaly

how much fluid you loose is how much the weight is reduced in %.
90 - 20%
80 - 40%
70 - 60%
60 - 80%
50 - 00%

the hydroli system fails when fluid loose is at 50%
